English

Daily reading: It is so important you continue your daily reading. Read any fiction books, non-fiction books, instructions, recipes, magazines, comics etc. that you have at home. Spend some time discussing the book or other text with your child. (See Home School Diary for further details – p30 to 33) Daily spelling: This week, we are looking at words which start with bi (a prefix which means two). These words are on Spelling Shed for you to practise. Please learn these spellings using the different methods we have shown you this year. This could include look, say, cover, write, check, creating a word pyramid, creating a word search, rainbow writing etc. Miss Pugh has made a video on the website to give you some ideas: https://stmarkssomerset.primarysite.media/playlist/year-4. There is a new video on the website where Miss French shows you another way that you can practise your spellings. Remember to practise each day!

Your spellings are: bicycle, biplane, biped, bicentennial, biannual, bilingual, biweekly, biceps, binoculars, bisect. For those children who usually have different spellings, your words will be on spelling shed for you to practise. Your spellings are: fresher, quicker, higher, hardest, darkest, unhappy, undo, unload, unfair, unlock Try to find out what your spellings mean using a dictionary. Here is an online dictionary you may want to use if you have permission: https://kids.wordsmyth.net/we/

Tuesday - Join Year 4 for an online HIVE game on Spelling Shed at 2:00pm on Tuesday – use code #242941

Only the top 3 highest scores in the hive game will be shared so don’t worry if you’re feeling nervous – no other children will see your score – but log in and have some fun! This will be based on the previous home learning plan’s spellings (words which start with super, auto and anti)– if it isn’t working by 2:55pm then please just log in and practise your assignment.

Daily handwriting: Practise your handwriting while you practise your spellings. Each day copy out one sentence from a reading book in your best handwriting. This week we would like you to practise the letters x and z. (See Home School Diary for further details – p26-27) Suggestions for daily writing activities This week, our project is called ‘Transport’. This can inspire your writing!

Write a list poem about travelling somewhere. This is where you write a list of things to create a poem. This could be called ’10 things to take on a long car journey’. Watch a video on the website where Miss French reads you a famous list poem and then shows you how to write one!

Write a piece of writing debating why people should and shouldn’t use cars to travel. You could have one paragraph explaining why people need to use cars, and another why people should try and use cars less. For example, you might discuss how cars are really helpful to get to different places in your first paragraph, and in your second talk about how other ways like cycling are better for the environment. You could ask someone at home for their opinions and include this in your writing.

Write a story about a journey you are going on. You could be flying in a hot air balloon over Antarctica of driving a train through India. What do you see, hear and smell on your journey? Who are you travelling with? What happens on your journey that is exciting? You could draw a picture of your journey at the end of your story.

Maths

Daily ‘White Rose Maths’ Lesson 20-30 minutes per day. White Rose Maths is the scheme we follow at St Mark’s. Each week during the school closure they are providing a set of 5 online lessons. Please encourage your Y6 child to complete this lesson every day. Each lesson consists of a video which can be accessed and played on any PC, laptop, mobile device, phone etc so we hope every child will be able to take part each day. The idea is that you watch the video and pause it at points to solve calculations. There is a link by the video for extra reinforcement activities on BBC Bitesize if you find that helpful. You watch the White Rose video first before attempting the worksheet. The video is more important than the worksheet. For each lesson there is a two page activity sheet which can be found on our St Mark’s Website. The first page helps the children practise the main concepts, the second has some extension questions which are more challenging. Do not worry if you can not print the worksheets, children can write answers in their workbooks. Access the White Rose Home Learning Page and the Daily lesson worksheets through our St Mark’s website: https://www.saintmarks.co.uk/white-rose-maths-for-school-closure-1/ Or directly: https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/ Have fun!! You can of course continue to practise these daily maths skills below – perhaps use one of them as a warm-up before you start your White Rose Maths Lesson. Suggested Project Ideas This week, our project is called ‘Transport’. Here are some suggestions for activities you can do:

How many different ways to travel are there? How many can you list? You could challenge a family member to see who can come up with the most. Then, make a collage which shows all of these ways of travelling. You may want to use magazines or newspapers to create the collage, or you could use pencils. Challenge your family to see if they can find all of the ways you include! Have a look on the website for a video where Miss French and Miss Pugh play this game!

Design and make your own transport vehicle! You may want to design your own train or boat! Use materials you have at home to do this, for instance you could collect plastic containers which may be recycled for the bottom of the boat or milk bottle tops to make the wheels.

Sit at your window and count the cars, buses and people that go past. Record the information in a table. Which is the most popular way to travel? Is it by car or by walking? Can you work out the fraction of cars you saw, compared to people walking and buses?
