What is an Apprenticeship?• Apprenticeships are paid employment with training, leading to relevant qualifications for the job
• Currently 500,000 + apprentices in UK (more than 10,000 in the South West) and number is increasing
• Available in over 250 different industry sectors
Levels of Apprenticeship
DEGREE APPRENTICESHIP – LEVEL 5+
HIGHER APPRENTICESHIP – LEVEL 4
ADVANCED APPRENTICESHIP – LEVEL 3
INTERMEDIATE APPRENTICESHIP – LEVEL 2
Key benefits of doing an Apprenticeship
• Receive a wage, don’t incur student debt and get paid holidays
• Earn more as you become more skilled and experienced
• Get trained and gain new skills and qualifications
• Have employment contract and can often lead to permanent work
• Build up confidence, independence, take on responsibility
Where to look for Apprenticeships
Main vacancy portal – ‘Find an Apprenticeship’ website
Where else to look …
• Contacting employers directly – speculative approaches
• Via network of personal contacts
• Through training providers / local college apprenticeship
teams
• Via work experience placements
• Organisation’s own recruitment websites
What successful applicants have learnt
• Finding an apprenticeship (or a job) can take both time
and commitment
• It is important to achieve the best grades possible
• Any evidence of work can make a big difference (part
time, voluntary or work experience are all useful)
• A good quality CV / cover letter is vital
