I believe that is what has happened with our building program. Let me give you some background and encourage your participation in the near future. During our Quarterly Business Meeting on August 8 a motion was unanimously passed which directed the Leadership Council to develop a plan for us to complete the Administrative Suite in our new building construction. The offices along Governors Drive are “shelled in” but we had determined before we began construction that we would not have sufficient funds to finish out the space during this building program. As we get near the end of the building program, there is a strong desire among many members to go ahead and complete the office construction as soon as we can. The Leadership Council has met twice to discuss this matter. During one of the meetings it was announced that church members had approached our Finance Office to make very generous, unsolicited matching gift commitments of $200,000. If others in the church would commit $200,000 then this matching amount would be given. The Leadership Council was very grateful for this offer and began to think about what our next steps should be. When we voted to enter into a contract for the building construction we determined that our long-term debt on this construction project would not exceed $3.5 million. We are on track to meet that goal. The Leadership Council is therefore presenting a recommendation that will simply give church members an opportunity to increase their commitments to the Faith Steps effort in order for us to have enough funds to endorse the matching gift offer, complete the Administrative Suite, and do all of this without exceeding the stated long-term debt limit. In this Messenger you will see the recommendation from the Leadership Council. We will discuss and vote on this recommendation during a Called Business Meeting on Wednesday night, September 12. If the recommendation passes, then we will mail to church members a commitment card which can be used to state any extra amount that you would commit in order that we can complete the construction project now. Notice that the giving period for this additional commitment will end in December, 2014 – one year later than the original ending to Faith Steps giving. For many of us, more time will be needed in order for more giving to occur. We will not have another Capital Stewardship Campaign. The plan is very simple – one letter, some announcements and publicity, and a deadline of October 7 for the commitment cards to be turned in. We have a great window of opportunity. I hope that you will come to the meeting on September 12 so that we can talk about what our next steps should be.

We are enlisting tutors for our ministry to Lakewood Elementary for the 2012-2013 school year. We have a new volunteer coordinator who begins this week and will be assessing the children

to see where tutors are needed. Some have expressed concern about the students having tablet computers this year. they will not impact your tutoring. We continue to use the methods of one-on-one tutoring with reading and math. At the welcome center and in our Sunday School boxes there will be tutoring brochures. Please fill them out and turn them into the church office with your records or return to Mike Pearce or Linda Horn. if you have questions please contact Mike Pearce at 256-428-9448 or [email protected].

RECOMMENDATION FROM THE LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

September 12, 2012

WHEREAS the church is nearing the completion of the building program; and

WHEREAS a motion was unanimously approved during the August 8 Quarterly Business Meeting to direct the Leadership Council to recommend a plan for the church to finish the Administrative Suite; and

WHEREAS the Leadership Council is working within the church-approved long-term debt limit of $3.5 million in preparing a plan for finishing the Administrative Suite; and

WHEREAS unsolicited, generous matching gift commitments of $200,000 have been made toward the completion of the Administrative Suite; and

WHEREAS we see God’s hand moving in all of these recent activities which creates a wonderful window of opportunity for our church.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Leadership Council recommends the church endorse the matching gifts offer of $200,000 by giving members an opportunity to voluntarily increase their commitments to the Faith Steps Capital Stewardship Campaign and provide an extra year to allow time for additional giving.

this initial time for making commitments will conclude Sunday, October 7, 2012 and the additional extended giving period will conclude December 31, 2014.

in the event enough commitments are received to cover the cost of completing the Administrative Suite, the Leadership Council will authorize the Building Committee to proceed with the construction work. in the event that adequate commitments are not received, the Leadership Council will bring a recommendation to the church about next steps.

Sometimes windows of opportunity open before us and invite us to respond. i believe that is what has happened with our building program. Let me give you some background and encourage your participation in the near future.

During our Quarterly Business Meeting on August 8 a motion was unanimously passed which directed the Leadership Council to develop a plan for us to complete the Administrative Suite in our new building construction. the offices along Governors Drive are “shelled in” but we had determined before we began construction that we would not have sufficient funds to finish out the space during this

building program.
