February 2020 In December, a church member who wished to remain anonymous gave a gift of $10,000 to be used to "bless others at Christmas." The Missions Committee distributed the gift, in $100 bills, to Sunday school classes who were asked to simply use these gifts to help others. Here are some ways these $100 gifts were used: - given to a local family whose mother recently lost her battle with cancer. - gift was split between two homeless mothers enabling them to purchase gifts for their children. - shared with a young mother from out of town whose baby was hospitalized. - given to two folks at a grocery store. - helped a widow with her electric bill. - donated to the employee fund at a residential center. - given to two friends with medical expenses. - shared with a local high school student working two part-time jobs to save for college. - given to a grandmother who is raising her grandchild. - given to a single parent with a young daughter, helping her to purchase Christmas presents for her child. - helped provide lunches for children at a local elementary school who could not afford. - given to an adult student at Sandhills Community College. - donated to another local elementary school for a family who was living in a motel. - shared with a grocery store clerk who is caring for a special-needs child. - given to the family of a local restaurant employee who has cancer. - given to a working single mother with medical bills. - shared with a local bi-vocational pastor whose church is small and financially struggling. - other gifts were shared with individuals who clean houses, elderly friends who are caring for grandchildren, and single parents raising their children and the children of friends. - gifts were shared with four families in need from a local elementary school To all who gave and cared . . . thank you. Narrative Report on Financial Position / FBCSP

Prepared by John R. Beith, CCA, CCBA, Church Treasurer

Fourth Quarter 2019 vs. Fourth Quarter 2018

Our giving goal through the twelve months of the year was $1,330,289 and we received $1,343,391. Through the end of December, pledged offerings received were 92.83% of the amount committed for 2019, 7.17% less than the 100% pledged, while non-pledged offerings were 115.61% of the total, 15.61% more than our projection for 2019. By contrast, pledged offer-ings through December of last year were 85.11% of the amount committed, while non-pledged offerings were 114.26% of the total.

The church’s operating cash flow increased $24,999 in the fourth quarter of 2019 with receipts exceeding expenses $68,900 for the year. Our giving goal through December was $13,102 more than projected. By comparison, cash flow in the fourth quarter of 2018 increased $79,080 with receipts exceed-ing expenses by $28,718 for the year. Our giving goal through December 2018 was $40,123 less than projections.

The balance in the Capital Improvement Fund on December 31, 2019, was $323 after receiving memorial gifts of $390 and a distribution from the Enduring Gifts Committee Endowment of $15,000 during the quarter. Approximately $53,000 was spent on the stucco project which was completed prior to year-end.

Ministry of Missions Update — During the fourth quarter of 2019, your dollars supported Bethany House, Habitat For Humanity/NC Sandhills, Bethesda Half-Way House, Boys & Girls Club of The Sandhills, as well as Kairos Prison Ministry in Laurinburg and the Meals On Wheels of the Sandhills. We also exceeded our Christmas Offering goal of $18,000 by $843 as of December 31. Contributions received for Lottie Moon were $10,297.93 and $8,544.95 for CBF/Global Missions.

Our General Endowment Fund balance on December 31, 2019, was $399,414 and the balance in the Jeannie H. Jordan Memorial Endowment was $67,477. As always, please contact me if you would like more information on how you can leave a legacy gift to The First Baptist Church of Southern Pines, supporting either our general endowment or the scholarship endowment of the Sonshine Learning Center.

Staff Transitions Due to the resignation of Glenn Ruggles as Financial Administrator, we are moving forward in seeking to fill that position. We are grateful to John Beith for postponing his retirement until the position is filled. Also, Lisa Corbett, our Office Manager, requested a reduction in her hours due to increased caregiving responsibilities with her parents. The Personnel Committee approved the request. Lisa will continue the financial responsibilities of her role and will be in the office on Wednesdays, beginning the first week of March. We are moving forward in securing another support staff person to fill her other administrative responsibilities.

Meals on Wheels Trivia Fundraiser Thursday, March 5 — 6:00-8:00 PM Fellowship Hall — Dinner Included

Meals on Wheels of the Sandhills, one of the local non-profits we support through our missions budget, is hosting the 2020 Sandhills Championship Trivia Challenge as one of their major fundraisers. MOW of the Sandhills provides hot, nutritious meals to 90 homebound senior adults in our community, five days per week, every week of the year. They also provide these friends with "Snak-Paks" for the weekends. First Baptist has agreed to be one of the venues for hosting one of these trivia fun evenings. The cost of $35 per player has been covered by an anonymous donor. Because of this donor's generous gift, the registration fee for up to 36 players has been paid! We would like to have six teams with six players on each team. If you would like to host a team of six players, please contact Kathy Farren at (910) 315-3936 or [email protected] for a registration form and additional information. Team registration forms are also in the church office. The winning team from First Baptist will go on to the championship round to be held at Pinewild Country Club on Tuesday, March 24, with dinner included. So grab some friends, and come out for a night of fun, food, and fellowship!

FAMILIES Ministry

“Thy word have I hidden in my heart that I might not sin against thee…” - Psalm 119:11 Having a transformed mind and heart begins with intentional training, deciding daily what we choose to think about and focus on. Missing the “mark” of God’s intentions in our lives is not the goal of any of us who follow Jesus. So, let’s be intentional about placing God’s word in our hearts and minds by memorizing the “Family Verse of the Month.” Parents are the most influential people in a child’s life. Influence your children by modeling the memorization of scripture as a family. When tempted by Satan, Jesus refuted each temptation with scripture. Let God’s word shape the development of values in your family’s life. Jesus’ method of turning away from temp-tation is the proven way. The verse of the month will be at the bottom of your worship bulletin each week.

Wednesday Nights at First Baptist Please remember to make your reservation for Wednesday Night Supper by noon on the Tuesday before via the church website at www.fbcsp.org, by calling the church office at (910) 692-8750, or by filling out a blue reservation card found in the pew racks each Sunday.

Calling all men! We need you in the Men’s Chorus! Baptist Men’s Day is coming up on Sunday, February 16, and we are looking for more than a few good men to sing in the chorus that day. We will sing a four-part arrangement of the familiar hymn, “Blessed Assurance,” at both services. We had a great crowd of guys last year, and I hope we can add to our ranks this year. No experience is necessary; the only thing you need is a song in your heart. Keep in mind, guys...

Liberty University Wind Ensemble… In Worship/In Concert On March 22, the Liberty University Wind Symphony will be with us in worship in both the 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. services. They will also share a concert at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon in our sanctuary. We are the last stop on their spring tour before they head back to Liberty for the rest of their semester. We are in need of housing for students Saturday evening, March 21. If you are interested in hosting students, please contact the music office and speak with Susan.

David MacPherson is a member of this group, and so we are excited to hear and support this fine ensemble during their spring tour! Greg

MusikGarten is Back! Spring semester classes for all children will begin the week of Monday, February 3. The fee is $60 for the semester. Visit our website at www.fbcsp.org to

Submitted by Carol Wilson On Monday, January 13, 52 of our folks attended our first Seniors on the Move of the New Year! Everyone enjoyed the wonderful pot luck dinner, and then were blessed by the “Faith Journeys” of Roger Turner and Lorena Arnold. We also enjoyed a “Hymn Sing” included in the program. Special thanks to Roger and Lorena as well as to Myra Robinson for selecting the songs and playing during the program! Ten of our WOW folks met on January 23 at 1:00 p.m. and enjoyed “Movie and Munchies.” The movie that was shown was Iron Jawed Angels about the Women’s Suffrage Movement, helping the American women win the right to vote beginning in the late 19th century. Passed by Congress June 4, 1919, and ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th amendment granted women the right to vote. Everyone enjoyed the afternoon! In February’s gathering for the Seniors on the Move program on Monday, February 10, we will welcome the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Quartet as they bless us in song. See you then! Group 1 is in charge of February’s set up: Carol Wilson, Chair; Roger Wilson, Doris Bowman, Joyce Collins, Leo Ganster, Marlene Houser, Wayne Jorden, Kathryn and John Kinney, Earle and Sandra Moody, Charlotte Patnode, and Eva Toney. Please bring a covered dish along with a side dish or dessert to share. Remember, someone will be at the old portico door on the lower level to assist you with your covered dish. Just pull under the portico, and then you may park your vehicle. Plans for February’s WOW gathering are in the works. Information and sign-up will be on the Senior Adult Ministry Bulletin Board in the near future. We look forward to all of the gatherings in the months ahead, as the Senior Adult Ministry Committee makes plans for the rest of the year! Please continue to check the Senior Adult Ministry bulletin board for updates and news!

NOTES OF GRAT TUDE Dear First Baptist Church, Thank you for your generous donation to Habitat for Humanity in support of our Pickney build. At Habitat, we believe everyone deserves a safe, decent, and affordable home. We are dedicated to partnering with our community to create opportunities for hardworking families willing to contribute 300 hours per adult of sweat equity and coursework for the opportunity to purchase a home with an affordable mortgage. Since 1988, our independent affiliate has raised local funds, recruited local volunteers, and built 260 homes in the Sandhills. We have also completed over 150 critical repairs to enable elderly and disabled non-Habitat homeowners to remain in their homes affordably and safely. Your donation has made it possible for these families to change their future. In gratitude, Amie N. Fraley, Executive Director Habitat for Humanity of the NC Sandhills

Dear First Baptist Church, [We] want to thank you for the flowers and all the cards you have sent up during the year. All our love, Bobby and Betty [Wilson] Editor’s Note: Bobby and Betty Wilson are Roger Wilson’s parents and currently reside at Quail Haven in Pinehurst.

Dear First Baptist Church, Barbi, our family, and I appreciate the embrace of our church family during Mom’s passing. We found tremendous comfort through the cards, calls, and prayers. It is such a blessing to such a family to turn to during times of sadness. Thank you, and may God continue to bless this place. Larry Smith

Kairos Prison Ministry, Scotland Correctional Institute (SCI)

On behalf of the volunteer laymen and clergy, Kairos Prison Ministry at the Scotland Correctional Institute in Laurinburg, North Carolina, we would like to share with you a few of the marvelous impacts of God’s work inside the prison 21-24 November. This was the third session conducted by our local Kairos Prison Ministry Team over the past several years.

We started with twelve inmates, whom we refer to as residents, on 21 November. The residents are seated at two designated tables, called families, seated with three Kairos volunteers/clergy in each family. The residents were all volunteers and selected by the SCI Chaplain and approved by the Warden. There are many more prisoners who want to participate; however, we did not have an adequate number of Kairos volunteers to serve more inmates. We had 24 Kairos volunteers in full support. Two of the volunteers on our Inside Team had served time in prison. They shared inspira-tional testimonies about turning their lives over to Christ. We hope to return for another Kairos SCI four-day inside ministry in six to eight months.

The Kairos mission is to share God’s Agape Love with both the residents and SCI staff through God’s Word and promise that He cares and has a plan for everyone. As we shared Agape through letters, talks, meditations, and scripture, the residents were given opportunities to share their Kairos experience. One resident said he had not been treated with dignity for so many years that he had forgotten what it was like. Another shared that his faith was hanging on by a thread and the ministry rekindled his trust in God and way ahead. Another shared that he learned that Jesus loved him, and he needed to walk with Him. Another shared that these days came at a perfect time in his life, lifted his spirits, and that he was really in need. Our Kairos ministry is to plant God’s seed so His work will continue in accordance with His plan.

Good food is a key portion of the ministry since the residents live in a very disciplined environment where the majority of their decisions are made for them combined with very bland inexpensive food. Breakfast is served at 3:00 a.m. One of our residents, Juan, had five children ages 11-17, liv-ing in Mexico City with his grandmother and mother. One day, with a big smile, he was savoring a plum. He shared that he had not had a plum in over ten years while incarcerated.

It was a blessing to see the expression of caring and support by so many individuals, churches, restaurants, and other Kairos Ministries. Our church and others provided links for the prayer chain, placemats with pleasant words and draw-ing signed by our youth, donations, and many prayers. The prayer chain was hung and went around the 40x20-foot room two and a half times. There were also posters on the walls from other Kairos Prison Ministries from several states: Virginia, North Carolina, California, Georgia, and Washington, and as far away as Australia. It was exciting to see the residents look at the items with tears in their eyes seeing the expressions of love and caring.

Another wonderful aspect of the Kairos Prison Ministry is that we do not abandon the “graduates” after the four-day inside ministries. One of the Kairos volunteers goes to SCI every Wednesday evening for a one-hour “Prayer & Share” led by the graduates with the SCI Chaplain also in attendance. We also have reunions to share more of God’s Agape Love and encourage the graduates in their spiritual life. Our prayers are that they learn to trust in God and share His love with others, and when released, they never return to prison and have productive lives in accordance with God’s Will.

For further information on the Kairos Prison Ministry, you can go to the website: kairosprisonministry.org. There are several nice linked videos about the Inside Prison Ministry. You can also go to kairosnc.org if you are interested in NC Kairos activities.

On behalf of the FBCSP Kairos Volunteers for SCI, we thank you for your prayers, prayer chain links, placemats, and financial donations from the church and the Men’s Fellowship Class. Of note, Duck Donuts, Chick-fil-A, Southern Pines; Rocking Pig Restaurant, St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Maxton; Faymont Baptist Church, Fayetteville; St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Laurinburg; and Congregational Church of Pinehurst all donated food and meals valued at $4,100.

Respectfully, Jerry Epperly, William Bush, and Rick Allenbaugh
