MARCH IS READING MONTH! Look at all the wonderful books being read by students, teachers and special guests across our school district! We’re sharing just a few of the photos that have been shared on school blogs this month. Click on the video link and see who you might recognize in the montage of Dearborn Public School staff members reading children’s books from Sleeping Bear Press. WHO do you think could be reading “Willow and the Snow Day Dance” with its tips on how kids can try to make it snow??? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oW9_5FrpxzE&feature=youtu.be

Students were thrilled to welcome Dearborn Council President Susan Dabaja as a guest reader at Maples. She read to second graders and answered their many, many questions.

Reading month provided 5th grade students at Maples Elementary a fun opportunity to meet their future middle school principal. Stout Middle School Principal Gregory Oke visited Maples as a guest reader. The students asked questions and enjoyed listening to Mr. Oke read.

Dearborn Heights Police Chief Lee Gavin shared a favorite book with students at River Oaks.

First grade students at Maples Elementary were excited to have Honorable Judge Turfe read to them. The students asked Judge Turfe many great questions and gained interesting information about the court system. For example, one student asked how long does it take to become a judge. Another student asked, “Do you like making people go to jail?” The Students enjoyed having the Judge read to them, had many giggles, but best of all was the smile on their faces!!

3/22/2017

Dr. Youssef Mosallam enjoyed reading to students at Snow Elementary.

DHS Bounces Crestwood in Regional Championship The Dearborn High girls varsity basketball team won their second consecutive MHSAA District Championship with a 57-49 win over Crestwood on March 3. DHS advanced to the regional round of play on March 7 to play the #1 ranked team in the state, Detroit Martin Luther King.

DuVall students celebrated St. Patrick’s Day with special Reading Month activities. While wearing their green and during breaks from looking for Leprechauns, they spent time reading a good book to themselves throughout the building. As students spread out across the hallways and classrooms while with sitting near some of their friends. Many classes held fun activities to go with the regular curriculum. This included graphing the different marshmallow shapes in a box of Lucky Charms in kindergarten.

Lindbergh Chess Champs Take First Place Trophies

What’s your next move? Hundreds of elementary school competitors concentrated and strategized before every move in the Dearborn Public Schools chess championships. Once every student has played two final games in the chess version of the Stanley Cup, the winning school teams leave for home, claiming a trophy and the highest honors. For more than 35 years the chess program in Dearborn has grown. More than 14 teams now participate. Lindbergh students came in first place by sweeping this year’s competition, winning both the “A Team” and “B Team” first place trophies in the elementary school chess championship this year. “A Team” is the equivalent to top varsity team in the district and “B Team” is equivalent to junior varsity. (Lindbergh’s winning teams are shown in top right photo.) Miss Polidori and Mrs. Hickson, the chess coaches at Lindbergh, have put together a truly phenomenal chess team...possibly one of the best chess teams in Michigan. The Lindbergh team has now won the district championship three times. At the competition this year, Howe elementary students came in second place. Howard Elementary students came in third place. Becker Elementary came in fourth place. Howe school was in the red. Howard was in the blue with big white print. Becker was in the blue with small white print. Because Dearborn has a lot of schools participating in the chess program, all four of these chess teams won area competitions to get to the district-level competition. The students from all four chess teams displayed great chess skills. Lindbergh parents noted they were particularly impressed by seeing their students using their critical thinking skills in a most spectacular manner. The level of concentration on the students’ faces showed they were able to screen out distractions and think through the consequences of their choices. More district schools than ever before now compete in the chess program. Both elementary teams and middle school teams compete. The chess program is important because it helps students not only think better but also relate better. In the end, this is what’s most important: Students who play chess are gaining skills, skills they will later need to achieve the success they deserve to achieve. Thank you to the Lindbergh School for contributing to this article.

Miller Students Put Their Hearts Into Helping Heart Association Miller Elementary students stepped up their "Jump Rope for Heart" fundraiser efforts this year, raising $1,589.33 for the American Heart Association. The whole school, that’s 660 students, participated in the "Pump it up" stations, raising funds during physical education class. In addition, 153 students brought in a donation from home. 25+ Club Banquet May 19, All Welcome to Attend Celebration

In 1956 a group of employees came up with an idea to keep in touch with their retired colleagues. Today, some 60 years later, the 25+ Club in still going strong and will be hosting their annual banquet on Friday, May 19, 2017 at Park Place in Dearborn. Social Hour begins at 5:30 pm followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 pm.

Immediately following dinner a short program will honor those staff members from the Dearborn Public Schools and Henry Ford College who have completed their 25th year of service and those who have been approved for retirement by the Board of Education. Those whose retirement is approved after March 31 are honored the following year. You do not need to be a member of the 25+ Club to celebrate with those being honored. All District and HFC employees are invited to the year-end celebration. Tickets must be purchased by May 5 by contacting 313-827-3006. The Board partnered with the 25+ club in 1962 to support their efforts to recognize staff members who are retiring or have been with the district for 25 years. The Board awards honorees with a small recognition in appreciation for their many years of service. Though a paperweight, cheese tray or certificate is no gold watch, it always reminds one of the recognition Ford Motor Company gave their employees after 25 years of service. Congratulations to those who are completing 25 years of full time service in the district and HFC.

Congratulations to the 25+ Club and thank you to all of its members for their service to the students in our school district.
