As we were recently reminded with the story of Legionnaires’ disease from a dental office waterline in Italy, infection control objectives are far too important to overlook. Huge numbers of pathogenic microorganisms can be found in the dental unit waterlines. Controlling the bacteria level and biofilm in narrow waterlines that feed into equipment that can be a source of contamination is crucial to patient and staff health. Many studies have confirmed that the small tubing of these systems is the ideal breeding ground for pathogen growth. Hayes has been researching dental unit waterline treatments. Not only is waterline treatment important for patients and staff, but it also significantly impacts handpieces. Our technicians and field representatives have seen first-hand how improper waterline maintenance can lead to handpieces clogging. The reality is that mixing tablets, shocking dental unit waterlines on a regular basis to control biofilm, and then testing the water for CFUs (colony forming units) is time-consuming, expensive and often yields inconsistent results.
