of planted roof gardens.Where space is becoming anissue in crowded cities, theconstruction of roof gardensand terraces could transformhow we treat our recreationalspace and give those living inthe city centres a morepleasant environment.

Chavasse Park at LiverpoolOne is one such example ofgreen space in a city centre,with advantages for city goers

and those living in thelandmark One Park West.Creating lawns on the roof,planting trees and creatingfeatures, is a traditional optionwhich is becoming popularwith developers; at City Viewin Liverpool city centre, theapartment blocks house treeson the roof. During the1940s, 1.5 million allotmentssupplied 10 per cent of what we eat, while today only 250,000allotments are in service. Thatsaid, more than 15.5 millionpeople in Britain are estimatedto be growing some of their ownfood as a result of the economicdownturn.

Jo Morfee, sales and marketingofficer at Homeshub (the onestop shop for affordablehousing) is a vegetarian. She grows her own food in an allotment near to where shelives in south Liverpool: “I’vealways been in love with theidea of home-grown foodbecause that’s my diet. It’s areally cheap hobby once you’vepaid your annual rent, which isminimal, and you only reallyneed to buy some seeds andcuttings. People are reallygenerous with sharing theircrops and ideas with you, andit’s a really rewardingexperience.” While there maybe a waiting list for anallotment, show yourenthusiasm by shopping at the allotment store for yourvegetables and think abouthelping out another gardener to pick up some tips.

‘Get Your House in Order’ is acampaign to raise awareness ofproblems including excessivenoise, anti-social behavior, andthose who allow their homes tobe used for criminal activity.

Vacant properties will beinvestigated to see whether theycan be brought back into use,and residents will be encouragedto report problems for thebenefit of the wider community.

Cllr. Marilyn Fielding,executive member for Safer,Stronger Communities,commented: “Houses used forgrowing drugs can have aterrible effect, and we want toclamp down on properties andlandlords and make sure thatlandlords act responsibly.

“The city council will workwith landlords to help with anyproblems they are having withtenants, but landlords whoknowingly allow their propertiesto be used for criminal and anti-social activities should beware.”

The council has the power tocrack down on rogue landlordsby serving an ImprovementNotice, which requiresimprovements to be made to theproperty, making a ProhibitionOrder that prohibits the use ofpremises, and taking emergencyaction when there is imminentrisk to health and safety.

Sales and lettings consultant Ian Taylorrelishes the social side of his role at KeppieMassie Residential. He focuses onproviding the whole sales package, evengoing as far as to provide clients with anoverview of their new home city.

How did you first get into property? I started at Jones & Chapman working part time, which washandy as I was studying property management and real estateat John Moores University so I already had a strong interestin the field. It was a good grounding experience, as I wasprobably quite raw when I started. I saw how business workedand was interested to know more.

How has your career progressed?I worked my way up to the role of sales negotiator there andstudied the CEMAP mortgage qualification, which gave me alot of confidence. It was at that point I heard about theposition at Keppie Massie Residential. I knew people withinthe organisation, which gave me an insight, so I knewapplying for the position was the right decision.

What can’t you live without?I hate being without my Blackberry as I use it for absolutelyeverything. It helps me keep in touch for work (obviously)but I’m also addicted to checking Facebook, the web andkeeping my social life in check. I broke it a few weeks ago andwas totally lost whilst it was being fixed!

How did you choose thisproperty?We heard about the Regendascheme from our friends whowere actually paying less fortheir mortgage than we werefor renting. As we’re both self-employed and didn’t have a lotof savings this was a reallygood option for us, and thehouse is really well built anddesigned with big rooms andan extended kitchen.

How is it laid out?Downstairs we have tworeception rooms leading off thehallway which we use fordifferent purposes. The wallsthroughout the house arewhite as we had it all re-plastered when we moved

in, and we haven’thung up ourartwork yet. Thehallway is paintedin a subtle grey/lilac

shade, and wehave a beautifulgarland lightwhich casts

prettyshadows.

Take us upstairs…The master bedroom is allwhite with rich chocolatebrown and red softfurnishings and an oak bed.Our curtains are red, whiteand gold in silk from Indiaand I’ll be putting up someof my own artwork whichfits in with the colours, asit’s made of belts andbuckles on a red satinbackground, and abeautiful picture I boughtfrom a friend at universitywhich uses differentcolours on a brown base.

Shane Beales, 25, a musician. Theypurchased the property with The Regenda

Group’s ‘Access to Home Ownership’ scheme.

How are you using your otherrooms?We have another bedroomwhich Shane is using as hisstudio/office with all of hismusical equipment, piano,drum kit, and guitars in there.We also have the beginnings ofa loft conversion which we arestill deciding how to use. Themain bathroom is all whitewith grey accessories and we’rehoping to get a slate floor. Wealso have a decorative tile fromHabitat hanging in there.

What would be your dreambuy?I’ve always wanted a cherrycoloured kitchen that was reallywarm and inviting, with redunits but that’s a long way offyet – at the moment we have ahuge eight feet pine table forentertaining.

Paul, what brought you to Liverpool this time?Our gig at Baby Blue. We play together as, andwhen, we can and try not to restrict ourselves to longtours. We also choose smallervenues where we know we can create a really goodatmosphere. The style ofmusic is Tex Mex, which I would describe as rock and roll music withaccordions and pedal steelguitar. It’s really happy musicso works best in small clubswhere people can really enjoythemselves and dance. What is your role in the band?Well, there are seven of us in the band and five of us sing. I probably sing in a straighter style then I do when I’m performingalone, so that our voices blend well.

How has your musical path led you here?If I had to pin down what - or who - it was that startedme on this journey I would say Ry Cooder. He inspired me to value a variety of stylesand the fusion of differentsounds. I spent about a decade following andabsorbing American Soul and incorporating it into my own music; then addedMexican singers to my group,which led to an interest in Mexican music. It hasgripped me.What reaction do you getfrom fans these days?It usually comes down towhether people get what I am now when they see meperform with Los Pacaminos.If they have preconceptionsfrom the ’80s about who I amand what I’m going to sing,then they may not enjoy the

It used to be quitecommon for paint from theceiling of old theatres to flutterdown when the crowd gave youa warm (and loud) reaction.But on this occasion tiny flecksof silver paint fluttered downall the way through the show as the crowd danced; it createda really special atmosphere. What is the first song youcan remember performing as a little boy?Magic Moments (the PerryComo song) although my mum has a better recollection of it than I do. When I wasabout five I would sing it at the top of my voice every time I was on the bus with her.Apparently, I always got

a round of applause too. Who are you currentlylistening to?I love world music butspecifically South Americanbands. There is a Mexicanband called Kinky whichmakes great club music with a mixture of Mexican chants - instead of hip hop - andsampling. Naturally Seven is an American band I’ve also got on my iPod at themoment. Which singers inspiredyou?Otis Redding has been a veryspecial inspiration. His voicecreates a sound which reallyhas the power to touch me.And people still say to me that my voice most closelyresembles Paul Rogers from the band, Free. Maybe we absorb influencessubconsciously along the way and then reinterpret them.

My son is obsessed with Star Wars. We are going to decorate hisroom in the Easter holidays. I want to simply paint the walls andthen use a border or a frieze of some sort featuring his favouritecharacters from Star Wars. I’m having problems finding a border ofwallpaper with Star Wars on! I thought it would be easy and nowI’ve promised this I’m really starting to panic! Could you help me?

I too have had a search and I agree, Star Wars border paper isreally hard to find. You may be lucky and find a couple of rolls oneBay, other than that, creating your own border may be the wayforward. Of course you would have to be careful about thecopyright of the images you use but other than that you and yourson could be really creative. There are many companies online whooffer a digital, bespoke wall coverings service. They could help inthe design of your border or frieze and offer different solutions. Ihope you have fun designing this and that your son gets his perfectroom for Easter.

Last year we spent an amazing holiday in Marrakech! We lovedwalking around the markets and enjoyed the atmosphere. I fell inlove with the large lanterns on display but at the time didn’tpurchase one as we had nowhere to put it. A year later we’vedecided to build a conservatory and now have the perfectspace for a lantern, but with no means of getting one. Is there anywhere in the UK that sells them?

I love Marrakech and would agree with you that thepunched metal lanterns and the lacy shadows they castare beautiful. The patterns especially look fantastic on thepolished tadelakt walls. The web sitewww.grahamandgreen.co.uk has just started selling largepunched metal lanterns. The lanterns are made from copper ornickel depending on the type of finish you require and woulddefinitely make a statement in your conservatory.

African Delights

We have just moved and really love our new house. The fireplacein the lounge is beautiful although the old mouldings are lookingreally worn. One has fallen off completely! We would like torestore it but do not know where we can purchase the mouldings,can you help?

If you are good at DIY, it’s possible that with patience you couldmake a replica of the moulding from the original moulding leftbehind on the fireplace. Alternatively you can buy mouldings offthe shelf. Companies such as www.buycarvings.com may be able tohelp. Do not be put off if the pieces are in a wood or a differentcolour, as once painted you will never be able to tell.

Make sure you remove theprevious layer of flaking paintwith a scraper, but take care not to damage the wood surfacebeneath. We’ve heard many times thatshowers use much less waterthan baths and are thereforebetter for the environment, butthis logic can be flawed. If yoursis a power shower, it only takesabout five minutes before you’llhave used the recommendedamount – an Eco Teardrop is atimer that will remind you whenenough’s enough. By installing a water metre, you could savemoney and water as you’ll onlybe paying for what you use.

Taking a shallow bath couldbe a guilt-free pleasure, if youuse less soap and bathingproduct than if you werelathering your whole body under the shower.

However, think about whereall that bath/shower water isgoing – down the plughole – andinstead collect it in buckets orjugs to re use elsewhere. (If youchoose to take a shower, put theplug in the bath or stand up abucket under the water flow.)This grey water can be used toflush the toilet, to rinse out thesink and, if not too soapy, towater the plants and clean outgarden tools and apparatus.

Lewis’s is celebrating afterwinning the ‘best dressedwindow’ competition run by Liverpool’s BusinessImprovement District.

The historic departmentstore scooped the title in a bid to wow retailers shoppingahead of the Grand National at Aintree this fortnight.Mannequins were dressed to the nines and special effectswere used to create the effect of race day.

We choose the broccoli andpotato soup to start, whicharrives in a huge bowl with aboard of bread, and then thechef ’s recommendation; roastpork chop with peppercornsauce on a bed of mash, andfinished with mushrooms andbeef tomato. The sauce adds adelicious seasoning to the meal

without being overpowering,and the flavours in themushrooms and tomatoes aresubtle and complementary.
