THE VOLUNTARY AID HOSPITALS

This article was published during 1914-18. The building in Wildernesse Avenue which was originally the garage/stables to the main house, latterly the home to Sealclean and is now awaiting conversion to flats was used during this period as a VAD hospital to treat the casualties of the First World War…………….In a special article we publish today attention is called to the great value of the work done by the Voluntary Aid Hospitals scattered throughout the country, and to the menace now presented to these admirable

little institutions. The Voluntary Aid Detachments were originally started as part of the Territorial scheme, and consisted of men trained to render first aid and women trained in home nursing. From the outside the Voluntary Aid branch suffered from a division of methods. In some counties the Territorial authorities kept the control in their own hands and in others it was delegated to the Red Cross Society. When the war broke out, 600 small Volunteer Aid Hospitals were established, and up to the end of February they possessed 17000 beds and had treated 70000 patients. These hospitals cost the State very little. The hospital buildings are generally free, and the doctors and nurses make no charge for their services, though the head nurse is usually fully trained and receives a salary. In addition these local hospitals often receive large local donations and 69 of them have not cost the War office a penny. In other cases, a payment of 2s and sometimes 3s per head has been paid when the hospitals were occupied, but when there were no patients no grant has been received. There is ample medical testimony that the

quality of these hospitals is very good indeed.Sir Frederick Treves whose testimony is quoted in our article, gives ample reasons why small war hospitals are infinitely preferable to large ones. Some time ago the War Office made the announcement that it was not going to accept more Voluntary Aid Hospitals. As a matter of fact, a large number of the hospitals, other than the 600 in commission, have never been mobilised since the war began. The reasons assigned for this strange attitude have only to be mentioned to be refuted. The War Office say they are uneconomical, but the answer is that they get them for almost nothing, while a flow of local benevolence is assured which otherwise might not be tapped at all. The next objection is that the hospitals absorb too many doctors and nurses. The answer is that most of the doctors concerned cannot leave their private practices, and if the hospitals ere closed their free services to the wounded would be lost. They are excellent training places for nurses, many of whom are afterwards drafted into the big military hospitals. If the inspection has been defective in some areas, the fault lies at the door of the War Office, which split the methods of control, whereas the proper course is to hand over control and inspection to the Red Cross authorities. Instead of discouraging these hospitals the War Office should do their best to multiply them, for it is certain that as time passes the influx of wounded will be greater. Seeing that the voluntary system finds favour with the Government, their present policy is most ungrateful, because the doctors, nurses, and attendants forming the detachments really volunteered for service in case of invasion, and never dreamed that they would have to serve during the a war lasting for years, though they do so willingly enough. The original scheme provided that they should be paid, and this should certainly have been done, although the point is not at present pressed. Three reforms are, however urgently necessary. The first is that doctors in charge of these admirable hospitals should be given honorary military rank, with uniform. This change is imperative, to enable them to preserve discipline, especially in the case of convalescents. The second is that the uniforms of the nurses should be registered. The third is that the War Office should not stop their grant when the hospitals are empty, because they have to be maintained at full strength just the same, and must always be ready for a rush of wounded. It is distressing that at a time when the help of all is needed this admirable network of medical institutions is being flouted and even threatened with gradual extinction, for reasons which will not bear a moment’s impartial examination. We trust that the reasonable requests of the doctors and nurses concerned will be granted without delay!

Irish Jokes

Bloke at a horse race whispers to Paddy next to him, "do you want the winner of the next race?"Paddy replies "no tanks, I've only got a small garden."

Paddy and Mick found 3 hand grenades and decided to take them to the police station.Mick "What if one explodes before we get there?"Paddy: "We'll lie and say we only found two!"

A coach load of paddys on a mystery tour decided to run a sweepstake to guess where they were going..... the driver won £52!

Paddy's racing snail is not winning races anymore. So he decided to take it's shell off to reduce it's weight and make him more aerodynamic. It didn't work, if anything it made him more sluggish.

Paddy finds a sandwich with two wires stickin out of it. He phones the police and says "Bejesas I've just found a sandwich dat looks like a bomb."The operator asks, "is it tickin?, Paddy says "No I tink it's beef"

Mick walks into Paddy's barn and catches him dancing naked in front of a tractor. Mick says, "Oh, no, Paddy, what ya doing?"Paddy says, "Well me and Mary haven't been getting on in the bedroom lately & the therapist recommended I do something sexy to a tractor."j

ULTRAFAST BROADBANDSeal, Underriver, Godden Green, Bitchet Green and Stone Street will soon have the opportunity to sign up for ultrafast broadband. Ultrafast Underriver is a community led project which is being supported by Seal Parish Council to connect these communities by fibre optic cable that would give speeds up to 1000 Mbps. There will be open days in January, where there will be an opportunity to meet Gigaclear representatives and find out more.

Bikes, Cats and New YearsI now know I am getting old. As I sat down to write this I realised you’d be reading it at the start of the New Year and I did that old person thought of ‘Already? How did that come round so fast?’ But come round it has, so firstly, happy New Year!I think last year I made a New Years resolution of getting on my bike more. A lot more. I wanted to get back into the ‘few thousand miles over the year’ mark. I did get on my bike…but not often enough to claim I fulfilled any sort of resolution. I did something better though. I lost one of my cats. That wasn’t the better thing, obviously, but through that I have met some really, really lovely local people. I have done stake outs in the gardens of a number of people, had conversations with complete strangers while leafleting and received numerous phone calls of sightings. I met dog walking couples, house bound elderly people, young people, old people and in between people. I found a stray that was re-homed and got a cat that had moved into one couples house back to his real home. One thing that has been clear through all of this is that we have a great community.

Sadly, I never found my cat, Charlie. Norman (his brother) and I have settled into the routine of a one cat household though, and I think Norman has become convinced that he is more human than feline now; he’s my ‘man about the house’. (I just need to convince him that ‘bringing home the bacon’ doesn’t need to be taken literally – he’s presented me with sausage, steak, fish and a chicken burger complete with lettuce leaf…huge apologies to any hungry neighbours I may have.)So this New Year I don’t think I’ll make any resolutions. This year has taught me that you don’t know quite where things are going to go, and sometimes, even if they don’t have the best start, or end, lovely things can come out of them. Thank you to the many people who helped with the Charlie hunt and showed me that this is not just a lovely place to cycle around; it’s lovely to be place to live and be part of.

SHIPBOURNE FARMERS MARKET JANUARY NEWSLETTER

2012 was not one of best years for the Farmers’ Market. We started off well with fine weather (we had a drought, remember !!) then we had rain, (lots of it and most on Thursday mornings !!). We were 10% down on number of visitors compared to 2011 and spend was also down..However, the good news is that all our main stall holders are still with us and hopefully, 2013 will be a better year. All of you who regularly come to the market will know our stallholders and their produce well. But for those of you who have yet to experience shopping at the farmers market, we thought it would be an idea to give you an idea of the variety and quality of local food available. A Farmers’ Market is simply a location where you can buy local, fresh, seasonal food, made, grown or reared by the stallholder. In our case the location is fairly unique insomuch as we are fortunate enough to be able to use St Giles’ Church for our outlet. Our approach is to offer an interesting variety of produce to entice you to come back to the market week after week !!Our outside stallholders include:-Oak apple Farm run by Gary and Lorraine who manage to grow an amazing variety of vegetables and fruit throughout the whole year. Renhurst Farm on which Annabelle, our butcher, rears their lambs, pigs and beef cattle.Keiron’s Game :- Kieron shoots all sorts of game in season on local estates Wayne’s Fish :- Fish caught in the North Sea (Wayne is defined as a guest stall as we cannot find a ‘local’ fisherman to sell at the market)Church View Farm : sells plants grown by Richard and JenniferWeald Smokery Susie sells a large variety of good quality smoked fish and meats.Real Deal Fishcakes are made by ex chef David

using locally caught fish and locally grown potatoes Chun Farm Roger grows different sorts of chemical free lettuce, herbs and fruit throughout the yearDesibox Jay and his family make varieties of Indian curry sauces using local produce Stallholders inside the Church include:-Rusbridge Family Baker Mike & Chrissie sell all sorts of bread, cakes and pasties made in their Southborough bakeryBourne Valley Honey Bruce’s bees make honey in his 40 hives located in the Bourne Valley Naked and Ready Foods Jo makes pâtés and humus using local ingredientsKentfield Farm Wendy raises chickens, makes game pies, prepares game birds and still finds time to make jams, marmalades and preserves ! SEAL OVER 60’sThe over 60’s Christmas Party took place on Saturday 8th December in Seal Village Hall – the hall looked very festive and with tables decorated looked very welcoming to the record group of members and guests. We were entertained by a trio. Two guitarists and a singer. They gave us a lot of pleasure. Tea and Raffle completed the afternoon. We start our meetings again in March and anyone, even under 60, are welcome to join us. Younger members, we are hopeful of, to help us with the tea as older members find tea pots not easy with arthritic hands. Look forward to seeing members at the lunch on 26th January.B. Arnold
