then you don’t need to have it,” said Kelly McClintock, the general manager of the Saskatchewan Hockey Association. “You decide what age group. Unfortu-nately the rest of the country believes there should be a national standard.” McClintock believes it’s important to teach the proper way to bodycheck while the players are young, and size differences are less noticeable. “We feel that skill should be taught when you’re learning how to carry a puck, when you’re learning how to skate, and you become aware of your environment,” he said. Despite disagreeing, McClintock said Saskatchewan will respect the new ban, which comes into effect right away. He said peewee players will still have checking and body contact, just not body-checking.

An Antartian was standing in front of a soda machine muttering, “You’re a

dumb-looking button. You don’t have much of a future, either. You’re going to be replaced by a much better looking button.”

“What are you doing?” another Antartian asked.

The Antartian quickly pointed to the sign on the front of the machine that read “DE-

This Day in History - May 28th1934: Quintuplets born to Dionne family in Ontario

On May 28, 1934, five identical girls are born to El-zire and Oliva Dionne in Callander, Ontario. The five sisters - Annette, Cecile, Yvonne, Marie and Émilie - be-come known as the Dionne quintuplets, and together they weigh less than 6.5 kilograms. Against all expectations, they survive their first weeks. When the quints are still babies, the Ontario govern-ment takes the sisters from their parents, apparently to protect their fragile health, and makes the girls wards of the state. For the first nine years of their lives, they live at a hospital in their hometown that becomes a tourist mec-ca called “Quintland.” The Ministry of Public Welfare sets up a trust fund in their behalf with assurances that the financial well-being of the entire Dionne family would be taken care of “for all their normal needs for the rest of their lives.” Between 1934 and 1943, about 3 million people visit Quintland. The government and nearby businesses make an estimated half-billion dollars off the tourists, much of which the Dionne family never sees. The sisters are the na-tion’s biggest tourist attraction - bigger than Niagara Falls.

alSo on May 28:1808: Canadian explorer Simon Fraser begins a trip down the British Columbia River that would eventually bear his name.1927: The House of Commons approves the Old Age Pension Plan. It is to be paid to those in need over the age of 70, in co-operation with participating provinces.1995: Jacques Villeneuve becomes the first Canadian winner of the Indianapolis 500 auto race.2000: The remains of an unknown Canadian soldier are interred at the National War Memorial in Ottawa after being returned from Vimy Ridge, France.

A wise old gentleman retired and purchased a modest home near a junior high school. He spent the first few weeks of his retirement in peace and contentment. Then a new school year began. The very next afternoon three young boys, full of youthful, after-school enthusiasm, came down his street, beating merrily on every trashcan they encountered. The crashing percussion continued day after day, until finally the wise old man decided it was time to take some action. The next afternoon, he walked out to meet the young percussionists as they banged their way down the street. Stopping them, he said, "You kids are a lot of fun. I like to see you express your exuberance like that. In fact, I used to do the same thing when I was your age. Will you do me a favor? I'll give you each a dollar if you'll promise to come around every day and do your thing." The kids were elated and continued to do a bang-up job on the trashcans. After a few days, the old-timer greeted the kids again, but this time he had a sad smile on his face. "This recession's really putting a big dent in my income," he told them. "From now on, I'll only be able to pay you 50 cents to beat on the cans." The noisemakers were obviously displeased, but they did accept his offer and continued their afternoon ruckus. A few days later, the wily retiree ap-proached them again as they drummed their way down the street. "Look," he said, "I haven't received my Social Security check yet, so I'm not going to be able to give you more than 25 cents. Will that be okay?" "A lousy quarter?" the drum leader exclaimed. "If you think we're going to waste our time, beating these cans around for a quarter, you're nuts! No way, mister. We quit!" And the old man enjoyed peace.
