1SEPTEMBER 2011 MINE TO MARKET

On 7 September Xstrata Zinc won the prestigious Minerals Processing Plant of the Year category for its Mount Isa operations in the national Australian Mining Prospect Awards held in Sydney.

The award recognises the increase in the Mount Isa throughput from 3.5 million tonnes in 2003 to 8.6 million tonnes in 2010 and the results of investments in

training, innovation, workplace conditions and technology to achieve significant improvements in safety, productivity, cost efficiency and environmental performance.

“The way this plant has turned around a declining operation and then gone on to become the major contributor for zinc for the entire group (worldwide) is to be commended,” the judges said during the ceremony.

Prior to Xstrata’s acquisition of Mount Isa Mines in 2003, the zinc-lead operations had been in decline.

Under Xstrata Zinc’s leadership, the processing operations have become the largest producer of zinc in concentrate within the business which represents one of the world’s largest integrated producers of zinc.

Brian Hearne – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Zinc Australia, said the award was a great boost for the Mount Isa team.

“We have invested significantly in our processing plant and I have personally been proud of our efforts to improve production, safety and environmental performance. There have been a lot of people involved in this turnaround and this award recognises the team’s efforts on a national stage,” Brian said.

Xstrata Zinc was also a finalist in the Community Interaction category for McArthur River Mine and the Mine of the Year and Hard Rock Mine of the Year categories for its Mount Isa operations.

In 2010, the Xstrata Zinc Mount Isa processing plant treated 8.6 million tonnes, an increase of 15% on the 2009 result, and delivered a 10% increase in zinc in concentrate to 355,024 tonnes.

Other finalists in this category were processing operations operated by Outotec Australia, Xstrata Coal and Xstrata Nickel.

Progress at

Mount Margaret Mining

John Twomey, previously Magnetite Project Manager at EHM, was appointed Mount Margaret Mining Project Director in early July, and he has been working to finalise an organisational structure for the Mount Margaret Mining Project team.

“The project team will be responsible for implementing the project execution plan with the goal of achieving first production from the tenements in the first half of 2012,” he said.

“A project execution study will commence soon to develop more detailed plans for bringing the project online and integrating it into our normal business at Ernest Henry Mining.

“Environmental and mine lease approvals are progressing for the project and consultation is ongoing with landholders and other stakeholders. We are hoping that the necessary approvals will be finalised in time to commence haul road construction before the upcoming wet season.

“We will continue to work closely with our stakeholders as we finalise planning requirements and develop these tenements into operations.

“The development and operation of the project is expected to create around 100 full-time jobs, some of which will be sourced from our existing open pit workforce, so we look forward to commencing work at the sites as soon as possible,” said John.

The E1 and Monakoff tenements are located 8 kilometres east and 21 kilometres south respectively of Xstrata Copper’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) operation and they contain open pit copper mineral resources with completed feasibility studies. Ore from the tenements will be transported to EHM where it will be processed through the existing concentrator, expanding EHM’s production profile.

Xstrata Copper’s new Mount Margaret Mining Project near Cloncurry comprises of the recently acquired E1 and Monakoff copper tenements.

Significant work has been completed since Xstrata Copper completed its $175 million acquisition of the E1 and Monakoff copper tenements at the end of June. The tenements are both located near Cloncurry and are now jointly known as the Mount Margaret Mining Project.

$3 million concept study completed in May 2011 which indicated the potential to mine and process at least 340 million tonnes of zinc-lead ore and 130 million tonnes of copper ore by large scale open pit mining methods.

The pre-feasibility study is underway and is expected

to be completed in early 2013 with the objective of confirming a preferred approach to the proposed development. The study will comprise: » community consultation to ensure

socio-economic, environmental and community interests are addressed within project planning

» environmental studies into groundwater and surface water, biodiversity and cultural heritage impacts, waste rock and tailings geochemistry, rehabilitation and air overpressure assessments

» a 36 kilometre diamond drilling program to upgrade the mineral resource classification within the Mount Isa Open Pit area

» geotechnical and mine design work to assess the best program for a staged development of the pit

» planning for the logistics and cost of relocating major infrastructure on site

» metallurgical testwork, recovery modelling and process flowsheet design

» financial analysis of all development options including administration costs, site infrastructure overheads, capital expenditure and operational costs

» production specification assessments and marketing strategy.

Subject to the successful outcomes of the pre-feasibility study, the next stage in planning would be to progress to feasibility stage and a full environmental assessment commencing in 2013.

On 10 August, Xstrata plc approved the commencement of a $47 million pre-feasibility study into the development of a large multi-commodity open pit mine on the existing Xstrata Mount Isa Mines footprint.

Brian Hearne – Xstrata Zinc Australia Chief Operating Officer and Steve de Kruijff – Xstrata Copper North Queensland Chief Operating Officer said the development of a large scale zinc-lead-copper pit had the potential to extend the life of the combined operations to beyond 2060.

“This project is part of our long-term operational plan that will see significant investment in north Queensland to focus on expanded mining and exporting mineral concentrates, along with the development of necessary infrastructure to increase rail and port capacity.”

The approval follows a review of the recommendations of an eight month,

Work is underway to develop the underground services and surface infrastructure of the $246 million project, which is

planned to be operational by the end of 2013.The underground mine will use a decline

for access and materials handling, and use haulage trucks to take ore and waste rock to the surface. When fully developed, the mine will have a maximum depth of 510 metres.

Chris McCleave – Project Manager Lady Loretta, said it was great to see the site start to take form with the first major milestone to occur on 23 September when construction begins on the underground decline.

“This is a really momentous time for the project. More than four decades after the deposit was discovered, construction has begun at Lady Loretta,” he said.

“There are currently 50 people onsite constructing the camp and completing the preliminary earthworks.

“As a new mining team, Lady Loretta offers a unique opportunity for experienced hard rock miners and professionals to join a mine which by its very nature demands high performance.

“We are looking to build an enthusiastic and experienced team of people who are really excited to be involved in the development of Lady Loretta. We are all looking forward to starting work on the decline,” said Chris.

The mine will create jobs for up to 230 contractors at peak of construction in 2013, followed by a similar number of permanent employees when operational.

An 80-room camp has been built to accommodate construction and mine workers, along with a kitchen, dry and wet mess facility, a mobile medical centre staffed 24/7 and an Xstrata Zinc project office, with all services connected, including power and water.

A tender has gone out for the construction of the Lady Loretta Village – an additional 100 purpose-built units to accommodate the full operational workforce. The village will include above average accommodation units, messing facilities, recreational facilities, pool, office space and storage.

Brian Hearne – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Zinc Australia, said Lady Loretta was a strategic asset within the Australian zinc portfolio.

“Lady Loretta’s higher grade zinc improves the overall quality of our Mount Isa resource base, increases annual average zinc production from this region by around 20% to 100,000 tonnes and supports further cost efficiencies from the Mount Isa operations,” said Brian.

Xstrata Zinc assumed sole ownership of the Lady Loretta deposit in April 2011 following the acquisition of the remaining 25% stake in the project. Lady Loretta contains a total mineral resource estimated at 13.7 million tonnes, with 17% zinc and 6% lead grade.

Lady Loretta will produce 1 million tonnes per annum of zinc-lead-silver ore and an annual average of 126 kilotonnes of zinc in concentrate and 40 kilotonnes of lead in concentrate over its 10 year mine life. Ore will be treated at Mount Isa’s processing facilities.

Xstrata Zinc begins construction of

Lady LorettaOn 26 July, Xstrata Zinc announced the commencement of construction to develop the new high grade zinc-lead-silver Lady Loretta deposit, 140 kilometres north west of Mount Isa.

Largest zinc resource in the worldXstrata Zinc’s resources in and around Mount Isa, including Lady Loretta, comprise the world’s largest zinc resource base, with an estimated 600 million tonnes of ore and 36 million tonnes of contained zinc metal.

The development of the Lady Loretta deposit follows the recent approval of an incremental expansion to Xstrata Zinc’s Handlebar Hill open cut zinc-lead mine 20 kilometres north of Mount Isa, near George Fisher Mine.

The Handlebar Hill expansion will extend the current open pit to the North to access an additional reserve of 2.4 million tonnes of ore, extending the life of the mine until 2013, during which time it will produce an additional 88 kilotonnes of zinc contained and 22 kilotonnes of lead.

The Lady Loretta development brings total capital expenditure on current Xstrata Zinc development projects in the Mount Isa region to $800 million. This includes an expansion of the George Fisher Mine and crushing plant, the Black Star Deeps and Handlebar Hill open pit expansions and associated projects within the Mount Isa processing facilities, all of which will ensure full utilisation of the Mount Isa zinc-lead concentrator at increased capacity.

Record crowds at the

2011 Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo

COMMUNITY

Held from 12 to 14 August at the Buchanan Park Rodeo and Entertainment complex, more than 20,000 Mount Isa residents and

visitors gathered to see some of the nation’s top competitors battle it out at the largest rodeo in the southern hemisphere.

This year’s rodeo had an action-packed program of events including saddle bronc riding, bareback bronc riding, bull riding, rope and tie, steer wrestling, team roping, ladies barrel racing, ladies breakaway roping and poddy rides.

Several new events took place this year including a Country of Origin bullride and a bucking ponies event, both of which proved popular with the large crowd in attendance, as did the big screen which provided replays of all the rodeo action.

The state finals of the Queensland Rail Silver Spike competition were also held across the

weekend and drew large crowds of spectators to cheer on the teams as they competed to build a 13 metre railway line from scratch.

Tricia Esdaile – Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo manager, said the event had been a huge success.

“All estimates are that we’ve broken the records for crowd numbers which is a fantastic result,” said Tricia.

Tricia extended her thanks to the loyal supporters who return to the Isa Rodeo year after year.

“That’s the exciting thing because we are a remote location and people have to believe in this event to make the journey.

“I’ve talked to people from all over the world this weekend – from a father and son who’d come from Ohio in the United States to people who have driven up from locations such as Singleton, the Sunshine Coast or stations 1,000 kilometres away,” she said.

This year the crowds didn’t hesitate to saddle up, don their best jeans, shine their spurs, and grab a cowboy hat for the 2011 Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo – the north west’s annual flagship event.

Tricia said the Isa Rodeo was a world-class attraction that played an important social and economic role in the north west Queensland community.

“We’ve had great support from the locals, from Xstrata, all the sponsors and of course from Rotary. It was a real team effort to make the event the success that it was and this support is very much appreciated,” said Tricia.

Steve de Kruijff – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Copper North Queensland, said Xstrata was pleased to continue a long history of support to the Mount Isa community and the Isa Rodeo.

“Today the rodeo is a flagship event and is a great opportunity to showcase some of Australia’s and indeed the world’s best competitors on the rodeo circuit,” said Steve.

“Xstrata Mount Isa Mines is proud to once again be the naming rights sponsor and gold sponsor of the Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo.”

Brian Hearne – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Zinc Australia, said Xstrata had committed over $14 million to the Mount Isa community through corporate social involvement activities since 2004.

“The rodeo is part of what makes Mount Isa a great place to live and visit,” said Brian.

“A large group of our people got involved in the event both in the organising team and as spectators which gives us an even stronger reason to support it.

“The Rodeo attracts thousands of people to Mount Isa which brings in an increased revenue stream for local retail and hospitality industries. We strongly support activities that encourage economic diversity and contribute to a sustainable Mount Isa,” he said.

Outside of the rodeo arena, the week-long program of events included the Rodeo Ball, Mailman Express, Bush Poets Breakfast, Mardi Gras, Rodeo Queen Quest and the Best Dressed Premises competition.

Profits from the Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo are donated to charitable organisations, community groups, and sporting and service organisations in Mount Isa and north west Queensland. To date more than $3.2 million from proceeds of the Rodeo has been donated back to the community.

Rock ‘n’ RodeoAround 10,000 people flocked to Buchanan Park to watch the Xstrata Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Mardi Gras Parade, which this year was aptly themed ‘Rock ‘n’ Rodeo’.

An impressive 20 entries rocked and rolled their way down the parade route as they showcased their floats.

The Xstrata Mount Isa Mines float was once again a head turner, having been expertly crafted by the very talented apprentices and Instructors at the Xstrata Skills Centre.

With the theme being Rock ‘n’ Rodeo the Xstrata float was a medley of ‘Rocky’ (the movie), rodeo and rock stars.

The main feature of the float was a boxing ring with Rocky Balboa (played by Electrical Apprentice Clinton Elliot, AKA Dook) versus Hard Rock (a boxing rodeo horse made from papier maché). The float also served as a tribute to long serving rodeo drawcard – Fred Brophy’s Boxing Tent.

Close to 40 Xstrata Mount Isa Mines employees marched alongside the float dressed in hard rock clothing, cowboy gear or clown costumes. A few notable characters included Kiss, Elvis Presley, Elton John and many more.

Approximately 30 apprentices, including boilermakers, electricians and diesel fitters, and indigenous trainees were involved in the construction of the float which took approximately 100 man hours to complete.

Getting into the party spirit

On Tuesday 19 July around 230 employees and contractors gathered from B and D crews at the Cloncurry Race Course where a buffet dinner,

drinks and band awaited them. Another party was held for around 220 people from A and C crews on Tuesday 26 July.

Alan Richardson – Acting Mining Manager, said they asked the crews some time ago how they would like to mark pit completion and a lot of people suggested the parties as a good way to celebrate,” he said.

“It was great for the crews to have the opportunity to socialise together and to reflect on some of our achievements in the pit over the years.”

The EHM open pit mine commenced in 1997 and since then more than 654 million tonnes of material has been mined.

“We’ve produced more than 1.3 million tonnes of copper and 1.6 million ounces of gold from our open pit to date and everyone in our mining team has contributed,” said Alan.

More than 90 partners took up the invitation to fly to Cloncurry from Brisbane, Townsville, Cairns and beyond for the parties, with many of them taking part in a special site tour at EHM in the afternoon before the festivities began.

“The partners really enjoyed the opportunity to visit Ernest Henry and to see the open pit where their partners have spent so much of their time. It was great to have so many of them here with us and of course our Cloncurry-based partners also,” said Alan.

In December 2009 Xstrata Copper announced it would invest $589 million to transform the EHM operation from an open pit mining operation to a major underground mining and magnetite processing operation.

The first magnetite concentrate was produced on 31 December 2010 and underground production is due to commence following pit completion in the fourth quarter of this year.

Myles Johnston – General Manager, said many of our open pit workers will transition into underground roles or other jobs at Ernest Henry once the pit is completed but unfortunately some will leave the site.

“Over the past four years our workforce has been consulted regularly regarding life of mine planning and we will continue to communicate with our workforce going forwards, he said.”

“We will continue to provide support for our open pit employees as they transition into other jobs at Ernest Henry, within Xstrata, at other mine sites in the district, or into retirement over the coming months as we work through pit completion and beyond.”

EHM celebrates upcoming pit completionWhile the open pit mine at Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) is not scheduled for completion until the fourth quarter of this year, the site’s Mining Department held two crew parties recently to mark this upcoming milestone.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines’ Environment Department hosted a multicultural food festival to help celebrate Multicultural Week

and raise money for the Mount Isa Soup Kitchen, on Friday 2 September.

Over 20 homemade dishes from 10 different nationalities were served in exchange for a gold coin donation. The department raised $283 for the Mount Isa Soup Kitchen, which relies on volunteers and donations from the community to cater for up to 150 people who visit the kitchen each week.

Jonathan Sanders – Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Senior Environmental Advisor, and Gaye Miller – Environment Department Administration Assistant coordinated the lunch which was attended by more than 40 of their colleagues.

Nathan Pike – General Manager Sustainable Development Xstrata Copper North Queensland, said that Xstrata Mount Isa Mines Environmental Department was a classic example of the diverse culture within Mount Isa city and congratulated their efforts in supporting the Soup Kitchen.

“Our Environmental Department come from a diverse range of nationalities, with more than nine different nationalities out of a department with 28 employees, including people from India, Zimbabwe, Iran and Mongolia to name just a few.

“The Multicultural Luncheon was a great initiative and demonstrates one of the many ways our people support the community and celebrate diversity,” said Nathan. A

n impressive 60 individual half marathon entrant and 13 teams assembled at George Fisher Mine (GFM) at 7:30am to begin the

gruelling 21.1 kilometre race to cross the finish line at Kruttschnitt Oval, in the Mount Isa city centre.

Xstrata’s own, Clinton Elliot (aka Dook), took out the Xstrata Mine 2 Mine half marathon with a time of 1:26:6, 26 seconds quicker than defending champion Aiden Hobbs.

A delighted Clinton said the result was due to a tough training schedule and the experience he had gained from finishing third in last year’s event.

“I saw Aiden head off at the start but I knew I would just have to stick to my pace and run my own race.

“At about the 15 km mark I began feeling a little bit tired but that’s when I saw Aidan up ahead and thought I might be able to catch him,” he said.

Clinton said at one point in the race he was ready to settle for second until he caught sight of Hobbs in the distance.

“With 3 km to go I realised I was closing the gap and began pushing myself harder and it became a bit like a cat and mouse game.

“I would sprint to catch up and then Aidan would speed up; he’d slow down and I would try to go again,” said Clinton.

After a 300 metre sprint to the finish line Clinton finally passed Aiden finishing first.

For those not up for the challenge of the 21.1 km half marathon, a Fun Run/Walk, Kids Mini marathon and Walk Challenge was also on offer.

The pumping station and pipeline has the capacity to return 17 megalitres of reclaimed water a day, significantly reducing the need for additional

freshwater used by the zinc-lead and copper concentrators. The investment has reduced the need to harvest freshwater from Lake Moondarra and Lake Julius.

While the dams are currently sitting at approximately 83% and 90% capacity, they lie in a drought-prone region where restrictions are activated when the dams drop to critical levels, which historically has been a significant production risk to Mount Isa Mines.

Clint Armstrong – General Manager Processing Xstrata Zinc, said the project had both environmental and production benefits.

“Water is a significant natural resource and this project has been able to deliver on our environmental values through significantly reducing our freshwater intake,” he said.

“The region’s Drought Management Plan restricts our water supply by 30% when dam levels drop to critical levels, so a 40% water saving through reclaiming water from our tailings has considerably reduced the production risk at our concentrator.”

Since commissioning occurred, further refinements have been made to the operating system which improves the distribution to the concentrators. By maximising gravity feed and improving on the operational control system, water has been directed to both concentrators more efficiently.

“Since the project was commissioned, we have continuously improved our freshwater usage at the zinc-lead concentrator. Through our team’s ongoing efforts and constructive interactions with the Engineering Department, we have implemented a number of procedures to optimise the existing system,“ said Clint.

Construction of the 8 kilometre pipeline and pump station commenced in May 2010, with successful commissioning occurring in September 2010. During peak demand periods, freshwater is now only needed to top up the process water system, if required. Although the reclaim pump station has the capacity to meet these peak demands, freshwater is still required for fire hoses, emergency showers and pump gland water.

Water recycling project gets results

In 2010 approximately $4 million was spent on installing a new tailings pipeline, allowing water to be recycled back into the mining operations from the Xstrata Mount Isa Mines tailings dam. Prior to the installation, Xstrata Mount Isa Mines was using in the order of 500 megalitres of freshwater a year in production. To date, the water recycling project has reduced usage by 40% at the zinc-lead concentrator alone.

Mine to Market: Fast FactsLake Moondarra was built by Mount Isa Mines between 1956 and 1958. With a construction cost of £1.7 million, it was the largest water scheme in Australia to be financed by private enterprise.

At full capacity Lake Moondarra can hold 114,000 megalitres.

Lake Moondarra was originally named Leichhardt Dam, however in 1961 it was renamed Lake Moondarra, which is an aboriginal name meaning ‘plenty of rain also thunder’.

Since commissioning occurred, further Top: The natural gradient of the tailings dam allows water to be filtered and pumped from the base of the dam.

$3 million to support communities across Queensland

First launched in 2006, the XCPQ has provided $30 million to support disadvantaged Queenslanders and preserve some of the state’s rarest

wildlife. This year Xstrata has committed almost $3 million over two years to support organisations that deliver life changing programs in education, disability support, arts, mentoring, homelessness, employment and animal welfare.

The event was held at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art overlooking the Brisbane River and city skyline, with 90 guests in attendance and a live jazz band.

Jo Pafumi – General Manager Corporate Affairs, Community Relations and Human Resources Xstrata Zinc said the event allowed Xstrata to thank its partner organisations and show how proud Xstrata was to add real value to the community and environment.

“The evening provided a great opportunity to showcase the innovative services our partner community organisations deliver and celebrate their achievements. These essential programs and organisations help improve the lives of Queenslanders every day,” said Jo.

Tim Costello delivered a keynote speech and guests also heard from Steve de Kruijff – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Copper North Queensland, Reinhold Schmidt – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Coal, and Jo Pafumi, who was the Master of Ceremonies.

During the night’s proceedings, Tim Costello conducted a panel discussion with representatives from some of XCPQ’s partner organisations. Guests listened to a young woman who had benefitted from educational assistance through The Smith Family, a single mother who received help through The

Salvation Army, and a foster child and his pyjama angel who are involved in The Pyjama Foundation.

“Companies like Xstrata have a highly developed sense of responsibility.

“Their license to operate is granted by the community so it’s important to be in step with what the community need; it’s a moral imperative. Giving back is what makes us human,” said Tim.

The XCPQ was established by Xstrata’s copper, coal and zinc businesses to demonstrate their commitment to Queensland and belief that communities should benefit from their operations, both in the short and long term.

This year Xstrata has partnered with The Salvation Army, Flying Arts, Cerebral Palsy League, The Pyjama Foundation, RSPCA, The Smith Family, Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management, and The University of Queensland.

Partners for 2011

Cerebral Palsy LeagueThe Cerebral Palsy League (CPL) is a non-profit organisation that provides vital support and services to children and adults with cerebral palsy related physical disabilities. Xstrata partnered with CPL to implement a virtual family support service including portable rehabilitation units (a multimedia video conferencing kit) which allows for families and health professionals to communicate via wireless broadband technology, construction of a purpose built control and service centre, training of therapists in regional centres, and online support for families, health professionals and peers. This support service will ensure clients and families from regional and rural Queensland receive the same contact as people in urban areas without the need for them to travel long distances.

Flying ArtsEstablished in 1971 as a cultural counterpart to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Flying Arts has become an indispensable resource for artists, teachers, and communities seeking to enhance quality of life and alleviate impacts of regional isolation through engagement, practice and appreciation of the arts. Xstrata has partnered with Flying Arts to deliver 20 two-day skills and creative-development workshops for schools and communities, sponsored the annual Young Artist Residency held in Townsville for talented young visual artists from high schools in Queensland, and sponsored the Young Artist Professional Development Award as part of the Queensland Regional Art Awards. Under this partnership, visual art services are being provided to communities to contribute to educational and training development and social and cultural wellbeing.

The Pyjama FoundationThe Pyjama Foundation is a children’s charity founded in 2004 to support Australia’s foster care community. The foundation runs one core program: The Pyjama Foundation Love of Learning Program, a learning-based mentoring program available free of charge for children in

Door To Homeless Solutions In Queensland’ project aims to provide additional support to the existing centres to help break the cycle of homelessness.

The Smith Family. The Smith Family is a national, independent children’s charity committed to helping disadvantaged Australian children by unlocking opportunities through education and learning. Xstrata extended its partnership with The Smith Family for a further two years to support the development of greater digital literacy among 240 disadvantaged students in Queensland so that they can be fully conversant in today’s knowledge society. The program is designed to facilitate access to employment opportunities and to meet the needs of identified gaps in personal digital literacy. Xstrata’s new partnership with The Smith Family will enable students to gain competency in operating a personal computer, conducting online research, personal banking, preparing a resume and job applications, preparing for job interviews and using email.

The University of Queensland – School of Metallurgical EngineeringThe University of Queensland (UQ) is one of Australia’s premier learning and research institutions. It is the oldest university in Queensland and has produced generations of graduates who have gone on to become leaders in all areas of society and industry. Xstrata extended its partnership with UQ for a further two years, which builds on an initial five-year commitment made in 2006 to establish and maintain the Xstrata Chair of Metallurgical Engineering. The partnership also funds personnel to assist the Chair and teaching infrastructure for Metallurgical Engineering students. In 2011, 30 engineering students will be graduating with a major in Metallurgical Engineering, the highest number of process metallurgy students at the university since the program was established. Each year UQ now provides more than half the number of graduate metallurgists in Australia.

Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM).The Queensland Department of Environment and Resource Management (DERM) conserves and manages the natural environment for the benefit of all Queenslanders. Xstrata extended its partnership with DERM for a further two years to help ensure the survival of the extremely rare northern hairy-nose wombat. Xstrata’s new partnership with DERM will primarily support the program management including establishing a caretaker program at the nature refuge and improving capacity to monitor the behaviour of the wombats and their offspring.

RSPCAThe RSPCA is a community based charity that plays a vital role in protecting the welfare of all animals, particularly Queensland’s displaced native wildlife population through rescue, treatment, rehabilitation and release. Xstrata has partnered with the RSPCA to broaden their services to wider Queensland. This includes expanding the Xstrata 1300 ANIMAL community service phone hotline to regional areas of Queensland, which receives over 26,000 community calls a year and co-ordinates the rescuing of over 8,000 injured animals. This partnership will also support recruiting hotline staff, upgrading current systems, and developing a long-term recruitment program for wildlife heroes to save the lives of thousands of injured animals.

The Salvation ArmyThe Salvation Army is one of the world’s largest providers of social aid and focuses on a wide range of social support services, including (but not limited to) aged care, children and youth services, disaster relief, court and prison services, employment services, disabled persons, professional counselling, and chaplaincies. Xstrata has partnered with The Salvation Army to help reduce the rates of homelessness in Queensland. The ‘Open The

showcased their top competition during a sporting festival which kicked off in late July and concluded in mid August.

This year several annual regional events, such as the Xstrata Mine to Mines half Marathon in Mount Isa and the annual Quamby Rodeo, formed part of the Xstrata Great Western Games.

Compared with the inaugural Western Games held in 2009 the most noticeable difference was the increase in visiting athletes – proof that the event has become a top level competition in its own right.

Sporting fields and venues across north west Queensland were swarming with talented athletes. More than two thousand competitors and officials visited the region for the games.

Steve de Kruijff – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Copper North Queensland, officially opened the Games during the opening ceremony held at the Mount Isa Civic Centre on Friday 29 July.

Nathan Pike – General Manager Sustainable Development Xstrata Copper, said with over 20 sporting events across seven regions, and over two thousand registered competitors, the 2011 Xstrata Great Western games demonstrated the strong interest in sport in our region.

“These games, located in our own backyard, allows for sports people and particularly the youth in our region to compete in a major organised sporting event, similar to those held in metropolitan areas. We are proud to support this worthy initiative,” said Nathan.

Col Kenna – Manager North Queensland Sports Foundation, said he was very impressed with the way the regional clubs hosted their respective events.

“From the judo club to the athletics club the way the competitions were run were top class,” said Col.

“It’s a real credit to all of those involved. Hopefully in future more sporting clubs will jump on board and make the 2013 Xstrata Great Western Games event even bigger.”

Athletes met at Mount Isa from all over the north west and from coastal areas including Townsville, Cairns and Palm Island.

At the Mount Isa Athletics Club, 95 competing athletes broke a massive 139 records from the 2009 games with Mount Isa’s best giving the visiting challengers a run for their money.

The Athletics Club experienced a 20 per cent increase in overall participation and a fourfold increase in visiting athletes.

Cycling attracted good numbers and a competitive race.

In the boxing ring fighters from the famous Palm Island Boxing Club, Mareeba, Woorabinda and Cloncurry made the trip to Mount Isa to challenge local competitors.

Mount Isa gymnasts travelled to Hughenden and returned with a swag of medals. For some young gymnasts the Xstrata Great Western Games signified their first competition away from home.

Junior rugby league teams from Cloncurry, Mount Isa and Richmond met in Cloncurry to battle it out for winning places in the Jacob Lilleyman Shield competition.

With all sports experiencing great participation rates, organisers of the games have committed to working even harder to ensure the future success and growth of the Xstrata Great Western Games.

The Cloncurry and District Show Society was the winner of the Most Outstanding Float with their entry featuring a ‘hot’ version of everything

on offer at the Show such as hot Showgirls, the hot Ringers Rally and hot chooks. Cloncurry Shire Council was announced runner up with their hot air-balloon entry.

Unfortunately, Ernest Henry Mining’s (EHM’s) beach themed float didn’t win a prize but still proved popular with EHM employees and their family members handing out beach balls, hats and hacky sacks to the crowd.

Breaking tradition the action-packed Rodeo began on the Friday night instead of Saturday with the change popular with festival-goers.

Pete McIntyre – Event Coordinator, said starting the Rodeo on Friday night and free entry saw an increase in crowd numbers from previous years.

“The Mardi Gras finished on the oval at the Cloncurry Recreation Grounds which led people straight to the thrills and spills of the Rodeo events on Friday night. An estimated 1,000 people enjoyed Friday night’s entertainment with around 3,500 people

attending the event over the course of the weekend,” said Pete.

As part of the event EHM hosted a booked-out mine tour on the Sunday with 38 people taking part. The tour involved a trip to the lookout for views of the open-pit mine, underground portal and construction work for the shaft underground mine as well as lunch and an EHM sample bag.

First prize of the Merry Major Raffle was won by EHM’s own Greg Woods – Estimator/Scheduler, who took home a brand new Suzuki Alto valued at $15,000. Second prize went to Eileen Ryder from Julia Creek who won a mystery holiday and third prize was won by Maryanne Wipaki – Health and Safety Manager Xstrata Copper North Queensland, who took home $1,000 cash.

Antimicrobial properties of copperMost of us will know that Copper plays an essential role in everyday lives. People have been using copper since 9000 BC and today, copper is commonly used in mobile phones, water pipes, locks and electrical wiring.

Copper was used by the Egyptians to sterilise drinking water. In 1850 AD, copper workers were found to be immune to a Cholera epidemic

in France.Although copper’s antimicrobial properties

have been recognised for a very long time, recent clinical trials in the United States have sparked worldwide initiatives to introduce copper into the healthcare sector, schools, mass transit and public buildings; all with the objective of preventing disease-causing bacteria from spreading.

Antimicrobial Copper is now known on the global market place as the world’s most effective antimicrobial touch surface material. Copper and its alloys possess a natural ability to combat infection-causing bacteria such as E. coli, as well as viruses and fungi. The antimicrobial property is built in to the metal and lasts the lifetime of the material. Copper is the only material with this capability and it can reduce total bacteria load on its surface by 99.9% within two hours of exposure.

The International Copper Association recently reported that in Beijing, China, Antimicrobial Copper-containing air

conditioners were installed on buses to investigate an improvement in air quality. Japan also has two childcare centres equipped with Antimicrobial Copper surfaces, and in France a newly-opened combined care home for children and the elderly also has Antimicrobial Copper handrails and door handles.

In Chile, the world’s largest copper producer, 350 meters of Antimicrobial Copper was used in brass for hand rails in a subway to verify its ability to continuously kill bacteria, viruses and fungi.

Clinical trials completed in the United States have reported 97% fewer bacteria on copper surfaces compared to non-copper equivalents, and a 40% lower risk of acquiring an infection for patients treated in copper rooms; this reduction was with less than 2m2 of copper surfaces in each intensive care room.

Additionally, all copper alloys are 100% recyclable and promote sustainable building design. So next time you are mucking out a stope, operating a ball mill, smelting concentrate or shipping anodes to Townsville you can be proud to know that you are not only providing an essential metal to the world, you are also saving lives.

19SEPTEMBER 2011 MINE TO MARKET

Late last year, Xstrata Zinc created the Our Mine project team to drive continuous improvement across George Fisher Mine (GFM). Since then, the Our Mine project team members have been challenged to consider how GFM can achieve their vision as a world-class operation, capable of producing 4.5 million tonnes per annum as an efficient, low-cost producer.

One of the most recent achievements coming from the Our Mine team was the success of the Jumbo Development Project.

The project has reduced equipment damage, improved safety and increased productivity in the trial area.

Over the course of the 32-day project, under the new standards and systems set in place by the Our Mine team, the crews achieved 87.7% equipment availability – an increase of 7.8% on site averages, and 244 metre advanced (metres of new underground drives developed) – more than a 100% increase on site averages.

Following the project, the development crews went on to achieve 273.3 metre advanced over 31 days.

Dr Joe Golling – General Manager GFM, said the Jumbo Development Project demonstrated the benefits of a robust planning process that integrates the activities of all departments across site

“To more than double our regular development metres is an excellent achievement and a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when targets are set and plans are followed,” said Joe.

“The crews working on the trial really enjoyed the experience, commenting how much they enjoyed coming to work and gaining a sense of achievement from a well

coordinated workplace and improved operating environment.

“Our maintenance department also made a significant contribution to the success of this trial, with strict adherence to preventative maintenance schedules and innovative time saving solutions for routine repairs.”

Prior to beginning the trial, the Our Mine project team went to a great deal of effort to develop planning rules to benchmark timeframes and eliminate non-essential rehandling. In addition, schedules were developed to ensure jobs were adequately prepared and resourced, as well as optimising when and how equipment was used.

Time-in-motion studies were conducted to review the processes for ground support and boring cycles. The study allowed the team to gain a greater understanding of the causes of delays and the effects these have on mine productivity.

The team developed planning rules on the preferred jumbo cycle times and improved communication for planning and shift change handovers.

The management structure and systems of the Jumbo Development Project have now been handed over to the development crews of GFM for integration across site.

Other initiatives coming out of the Our Mine project office have included revised cost centre structures, new sump designs, new communication systems, leadership training and the Roads, Water and Waste Project in George Fisher North.

The team has now moved to the lower mining block in George Fisher North to start rehabilitation work and bring the area up to the new standards.

When Xstrata’s product leaves the Port of Townsville or Xstrata Zinc’s Bing Bong in the Northern Territory it poses several

financial, environmental and reputational risks. This is partly because not all countries have the same standards of reporting, methods for transporting goods and environmental obligations.

To address these risks Xstrata Copper’s commercial team maintains ongoing relationships with several minerals inspection and surveying companies. These companies act as representatives during loading and overseas discharge ports. They supervise the weighing of the product, the preparation of homogenous product samples and the determination of the product’s moisture to ensure that Xstrata’s standards and values are upheld across the globe.

They also report on the storage and condition of the material, the methods used to load and discharge the product as well as ensuring that appropriate measures are

adopted to eliminate the risk of spillage or loss during transportation.

Kalman Horvath – Superintendent Sales and Commercial Xstrata Copper Townsville Operations, said these companies play an integral role in Xstrata’s risk management processes.

“Xstrata has stringent policies to prevent product spillage into an aquatic environment and dust emissions during discharge, we engage the services of mineral inspection and surveying companies to ensure that our policies are adhered to,” he said.

“From the time a vessel arrives right through until the time the product has been discharged and released to the customer, these companies represent Xstrata’s interests at these critical delivery points through their direct actions and if need be, intervention.

“They act as our eyes and ears on the ground to ensure product is weighed and analysed correctly, in addition to overseeing processes to eliminate environmental harm and reputational risk to Xstrata Copper.”

Product protection from ship to shoreMineral inspection and supervision companies play a vital role in providing independent representation for Xstrata, helping to protect company interests, uphold environmental and sustainable development values and ensuring the integrity of Xstrata’s products prior to delivery to customers.

Leaving family and work life behind, the epic journey will cover 15,700 km, averaging a staggering 220 km per day over 80 days, (five times the distance of

the Tour de France).Xstrata Mount Isa Mines recently had the

great pleasure of hosting the Xstrata Cycle for SMILE team in Mount Isa and providing an exclusive dinner in their honour.

Having started in Sydney, the Xstrata Cycle for SMILE team had already cycled around 3,668 kilometres and raised over $1 million when they reached Mount Isa, on July 19.

All funds raised are donated to the SMILE Foundation (Supporting Medical Innovation for Life Enhancement) to aid medical research and provide financial assistance to families whose children suffer from rare diseases.

While in Mount Isa the Cyclists and their dedicated support crew were joined by Xstrata Management, Guest of honour Mount Isa City Council Mayor – Cr John Molony and other key stakeholders for a dinner to celebrate their efforts and raise awareness for their cause.

Steve de Kruijff – Chief Operating Officer Xstrata Copper North Queensland said, Xstrata is proud to be involved with such a challenging event, which has been supported through Xstrata Coal’s Corporate Social Involvement Fund.

“To cycle across Australia and raise awareness of the needs of children with rare diseases takes great commitment, endurance, mental fortitude and skill,” he said.

“Xstrata Mount Isa Mines is pleased to be able to host the Xstrata Cycle for SMILE team in this leg of their tremendous ride.

“Xstrata employs more than 14,000 people across our Australian copper, zinc, coal and nickel businesses, and since 2002 has generated 54 billion dollars in revenue which we have invested back into this country.

“Mining continues to form the economic backbone of Australia and through partnerships, such as the SMILE Foundation, Xstrata is able to provide financial assistance required to help make a sustainable difference to the lives of everyday Australians,” said Steve.

Mayor John Molony provided a passionate civic welcome for the cyclists and during the dinner delegates watched a moving presentation on some of the families who will benefit from the SMILE foundation.

The completed Dental Health Building’s four dental surgeries is an increase of two surgeries from the existing service and will enable Queensland Health to double the number of dental patients receiving treatment in Mount Isa, thereby reducing the current two-year waiting list for dental services.

The centre will also provide a dental health training facility. Once the Dental Health Building is operational it will regularly service

nine other communities within the Mount Isa Health Service district.

Melanie Edgar – Corporate Affairs and Community Relations Xstrata Copper North Queensland, said delivering essential health and dental services is crucial in developing sustainable communities.

“This partnership with Queensland Health reaffirms our commitment to community health and will ensure the Mount Isa community and its surrounding communities have access to a modern public dental health facility, while providing important training opportunities for future dentists,” he said.

“We are pleased this funding will enable the creation of a new Dental Health treatment centre that will improve access to dental health services and alleviate lengthy waiting times experienced in regional and remote areas,” said Melanie.

The 2011 Mega Day Out proved to once again be a success with a fun filled day held at the Mount Isa Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) Skate Park on Saturday 16 July.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines was a proud sponsor of the event which featured Xstrata Healthy Kids, local community group stalls, live entertainment, bouncing castles and endless games.

The highly anticipated Xstrata Skate Challenge kick-started the day with professional demonstrators Freestyle Now who wowed the crowds with skating, BMX and scooter demonstrations. The talented extreme team then judged Mount Isa’s local talent in the skate challenge.

Other live entertainment included performances from Mount Isa Irish dancers and Mount Isa Highland dancers; Xstrata Battle of the Bands winner Whatever Works and the talented hip hop dance group Stealth Crew.

Following the success of last year’s format, four performers from La Luna Youth Arts The Manipulators returned to Mount Isa to entertain the crowd. The Manipulators rolled out the day with street entertainment, followed by two live performances and workshops for the kids.

Each year Mount Isa City Council, Mount Isa PCYC, Centacare’s Communities for Children and Xstrata Mount Isa Mines, together with other local sponsors and volunteers get together to provide youth and family engagement activities in a safe environment.

There was close to 90 competitors from all over the country in this year’s Challenge, with Hugh travelling all the way from Tamworth to take out the top

honours on his stallion Millionnic Chic – the first imported stallion to win the Challenge.

Hugh’s first place saw him take home the top prize of $10,000 and the Reg Brown Memorial replica trophy valued at $2,500.

Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) was the major sponsor of the event and EHM’s own Jaymi-lee Abdy – Health and Safety Document Controller, took out the Ladies Draft on her mare Katie Lawson.

Vince Wall – President of the Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge, said while nomination numbers remained the same as previous years, the quality of the competition had increased.

“The Challenge has a reputation as Australia’s premier display of horsemanship and requires competitors to complete two phases, with one involving cattle and the other a dry workout (no cattle), to showcase their horsemanship skills.

“The level of horsemanship is getting better each year with non-professional competitors such as ringers and station-hands getting a lot quicker and as a result achieving higher scores which motivates the professional competitors to improve each year,” said Vince.

Around 3,000 competitors and spectators went through the gates during the four day event.

Hugh Miles set a new record for achieving the highest first round score ever recorded – with a score of 95.25, at the Ernest Henry Mining Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge held on 14–17 July.

The Queensland Training Awards, hosted by the Department of Education and Training, acknowledges outstanding achievements by

individuals and organisations in the vocational training sector.

This award recognises Xstrata Mount Isa Mines’ outstanding collaboration with the Mount Isa Institute of TAFE, Motor Trader’s Association Institute of Technology, Spinifex State College, and Krause Health and Safety.

Tony Page – General Manager Human Resources Xstrata Copper Queensland, said that Xstrata Mount Isa Mines is extremely proud to run one of the largest apprenticeship programs in North Queensland, with over 350 apprentices graduating since the purpose-built apprentice training facility in Mount Isa opened in 2006, and with an additional 239 employees currently completing their apprenticeship.

“With the support of our partners Xstrata Mount Isa Mines is able to continuously deliver a high standard of training, with a

large number of apprentices graduating each year,” said Tony.

“I’d sincerely like to thank our award partners, the Mount Isa Institute of TAFE, the Motor Trader’s Association Institute of Technology, the Spinifex State College and Krause Health and Safety for their continued support.”

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines congratulates all participants of the Queensland Training Awards on their achievements.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines’ Copper Smelter has had a positive start to the second half of the year, breaking the monthly anode

production record and achieving 12 month LTI (Loss Time Injury) free at the end of July.

Paul Telford – General Manager Copper Smelter, said that the smelter’s achievements were a direct result of Superintendents, Supervisors and crews continued efforts to improve risk management and engagement of the workforce in these initiatives.

“Our employees and contractors have worked together to reach this milestone and I congratulate the entire team for their efforts in achieving safe consistent production,” he said.

“Our significant safety milestone was achieved through improvements in risk management, focusing on identification of high hazard activities and ensuring controls have been implemented to reduce the risk of these events occurring. This has resulted in a reduction of high potential near miss incidents and injuries.”

The Copper Smelter produced 23,824 tonnes of anode during July, beating the previous record of 23,292 tonnes, set in August 2008.

Paul said that the production record could be attributed to adherence to processes across the operational and maintenance departments.

“The maintenance department are doing great work, driving high reliability and run times, which has a flow on effect throughout the operations,” said Paul.

“Importantly, our teams have a strong focus on delivering outcomes against the KPIs (Key Performance Indicators). This has greatly assisted with adherence to our planning schedules which allows all departments to interact in unison and achieve the overall goals of the smelter operations.”

All crews from the operations and maintenance departments of the Copper Smelter will celebrated their achievements with breakfast BBQs to be held during mid-September.

Competitive insurance premiumsHaving Death and Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) insurance and Salary Continuance Insurance (SCI) cover through your super fund is generally cheaper than purchasing insurance outside of your superannuation fund. This is because you can access group insurance premiums direct through your fund instead of paying a retail premium rate. Premiums are also deducted directly from your super account balance.

Your options through XstratasuperXstratasuper – which is a sub-plan of the Plum Superannuation Fund, offers Death, TPD and SCI insurance. Your SCI cover is 75% of salary for a maximum of 2 years. Your Death and TPD insurance is based on your selected level of cover (i.e. 5%, 10%, 16%, or 20%), your superannuation salary, years of future service to age 65, plus any voluntary cover.

The default level of insurance cover for Death and TPD is 10% of your superannuation salary times years of future service to age 65. This is set with all members in mind and is a great starting point. However, the default level may not be enough to meet your personal financial commitments. For example, the insurance needs of a single person are likely to be different to those of a couple with children.

Working out the insurance you needA good way to get some guidance on how much insurance you’ll need is by adding up all your current financial commitments. You could also seek financial advice from a licensed or authorised financial adviser to ensure that your Death, TPD or SCI insurance gives you enough coverage and fits in with your overall financial plan.

Where to get more informationThe Xstratasuper Product Disclosure Statement has full details of insurance cover offered through the plan. You can also use the Insurance Gap Calculator to help identify the right level of insurance for you. Both are available at www.plum.com.au

Recent improvements to XstratasuperInsurance became more affordable on 1 February 2011 when all premiums were reduced by 10%.

The upper limit for standard insurance cover with no health checks (Automatic Acceptance Limit) increased from $1 million to $1.5 million for Death and TPD and $192,000 per year for SCI.

Manager of Environment North Queensland, Pieter Swart said the greenbelt is an important buffer zone between our operations

and the community.“The Greenbelt is designed to improve the

aesthetics of the town and further reduce the impact on the Mount Isa community from past and present operations,” said Pieter.

“To date, more than $3 million has been spent rehabilitating land along the greenbelt and in the community.

“This next phase of the Greenbelt Project has been in planning for some time, but it was critical that we allowed the tenants’ contracts to expire prior to commencing any works.

The planting of native trees will commence in October and will be similar to the other

Greenbelt projects located along Barkly Highway and Railway Avenue.

Brett Peterson – President Mount Isa Chamber of Commerce, said the Barkly Highway is a key arterial access road into and out of Mount Isa with thousands of visitors passing through it each year.

“Rehabilitating this corridor and improving the aesthetics of this highway will ensure that visitor’s first and last impressions are positive,” he said.

Xstrata Mount Isa Mines, Mount Isa City Council and QR National established the Greenbelt Agreement in 2000 to expand a rehabilitated buffer zone of bushland between the Mount Isa operations and the Mount Isa Community.

Old Barkly Highway buildings demolishedXstrata Mount Isa Mines has implemented the next phase of the Greenbelt Project, with the demolition of the vacant buildings located on the Barkly Highway near Xstrata Mount Isa Mines’ Gardenia Gate during August. The Environment Department have plans to plant the area with native trees during October.

Is it time to review your Insurance? Look out for a message

from Plum this month. For a limited time you will be able to increase your level of insurance cover without the usual

After sitting idle when it finished the K76 ventilation hole on surface next to the Black Star Open Cut in 2007, The Wombat was put back

to work when Australian Raise Drilling (ARD) contacted Trevor Brebner – Superintendent for Raiseboring and Diamond Drilling, asking if Xstrata would be interested in dry hiring  the machine.

The project was to drill a 450 metre deep hole by 4.5 metre in diameter on surface at Olympic Dam, a $1.04 trillion copper, uranium and gold deposit in South Australia, which is situated 600 kilometres North of Adelaide and at the time was the most valuable unmined mineral deposit known.

The project would take four months to complete. It was proposed that ARD dry hire the machine and the drill rods and operate this rig with their operators.

After months of negotiations between ARD, Bryony Andrew – MICO Development Manager, and Trevor Brebner, a contract was drawn up with the help of Michelle O’Brien in the contracts department in April 2011. Initially the hire agreement allowed for the Xstrata operators to travel to Olympic Dam with the machine to set it up and start the drilling and

then ARD operators would then take over and operate it until the project was completed.

Jeff Lawrenson, Mark DeBerg and Mick Hazel volunteered to be the operators that would to go to Olympic Dam to set up and train the ARD personnel.

After the first month the Xstrata operators were asked if they could continue to travel to Olympic Dam and oversee the use of the machine until the project was completed.

“All three employees were only too pleased to help out. The three took turns travelling to and from Olympic Dam operating the machine for the four months,“ said Trevor.

“There was some concern by everyone that we were sending the machine so far away after it had been sitting for so long. There were some problems along the way but there was nothing that could not be rectified.”

The project has now been successfully completed and the machine will return to Mount Isa for minor repairs and modifications. It will be then put into storage near Mobile Fleet Workshop until its services are required again.

The Wombat has been used both on surface and underground throughout Xstrata’s Australian operations including raise drilling the

ventilation shafts throughout both the Copper Mine and the Zinc mines, MacArthur River Mine and Newlands Coal Mine.

The Wombat put to use in

$1 trillion projectIn 1971, a Robbins 81R Raisebore machine, which is better known as The Wombat because of the likeness to a wombat burrowing underground tunnels, was commissioned at Mount Isa Mines.

HEALTH

Take the pressure down

29SEPTEMBER 2011 MINE TO MARKET

Stress affects everyone differently – some people won’t eat, others will be staring down an empty tub of ice-cream. Just the right amount of stress can motivate us to complete a task or goal (does anyone remember doing their homework or an assignment the night before it was due?). While continual or excessive stress can cause anxiety and depression, and blur your perception of what is happening in the real world.

Find a balance

Try saying ‘no’ every so often to ensure your social and work timetable isn’t jam-packed. This will give you time to relax, complete overdue tasks, and may even leave time to discover what is stressing you out and find a suitable solution!

Be organised

Try not to leave everything to the last minute – using a ‘to do’ list, reminders and calendars are great ways to plan ahead and allow enough time (or even a little extra time) to complete those pressing matters.

Take time out

Try not to spend too much time worrying about what is stressing you out. Remember life should be enjoyed! So make sure you leave time to do things which make you feel good! Catch up with friends, listen to music, play sport or spend some quality time with your loved ones.

Exercise

Research shows that exercise can assist with many ailments and conditions and stress is one of them. Try to find time to do a physical activity you enjoy every day – it may be going to the gym by yourself, or simply playing handball with your children.

Talk

Talk to someone who can help. It’s always good to get an honest and trusted opinion from a friend or loved one, but sometimes we need professional help. It may not be going to a psychologist to talk about your stress. It may be visiting a financial advisor if you’re having money problems, or a health professional if you’ve discovered someone in your family has a chronic disease. Remember, knowledge is power!
