Advent Sunday - 27th November 2011
Second Coming.
History of the Advent Calendar
The appearance of an advent calendar in the
home is always one of the first signs that
Christmas is on it’s way. Some form of
Advent Calendar has been used for about the
last 150 years. In the mid 19th century,
German protestants would draw a chalk line
on doors, light a candle or put up a religious
picture every night in the countdown to
Christmas. The first printed Advent
Calendars originated in Germany and was
produced by Gerhard Lang. He got the idea
from his own childhood when his mother
used to attach sweets to a piece of cardboard
for Gerhard to take off each day. His first
printed calendar had small coloured pictures
attached to a piece of cardboard each day in
December. Later Advent calendars were
made with little doors to open on each day.
Production of Lang’s Advent Calendars was
stopped during the war and in 1946 Richard
Selmer began making them again. The first
one he produced was called “Little
Town” (below) and a German, Swedish and
English version were made. A newspaper
article showing President’s Eisenhower’s
grandchildren with the “Little Town”
calendar helped to grow the tradition in
America. Selmer’s company still make
Advent Calendars to this day.
Many Advent Calendars these days have
very little religious content and the most
common now include popular TV or film
characters and a chocolate behind each
window.
Sunday 27th November marks the start of Advent in the Christian calendar. Advent begins on the nearest Sunday to 30th November and continues until Christmas Eve. It is a time when Christians across the world prepare for the celebration of the birth of Jesus.
The term Advent derives from the Latin
word “adventus” which means “arrival.”
Back in the 5th Century, Advent would
begin on the 11th November and would take
the form of a six week fast. During
the 6th Century the time was
reduced to it’s current length and
later the fasting was dropped.
Sometime in the middle ages, the
focus of advent also began to
include the anticipation of Christ’s

A CD has been specially created by two well-known Leigh and Hadleigh choirs to raise money for Southend University Hospital’s Bosom Pals Appeal at the start of breast cancer awareness month.
The ladies of the Orpheus Singers and the
chaps of Leigh Orpheus Male Voice Choir
decided to create the CD, called Orpheus
Together, to support the fight against breast
cancer.
The Bosom Pals Appeal is raising money to
purchase state-of-the-art equipment for the
earlier detection of smaller breast cancers.
The CD was launched at the Park Inn Palace
Hotel along Southend seafront, with tracks
from it sung that evening at a special concert
held at Westcliff High School for Boys.
The CD features a varied mix of show tunes
and pop classics. Lead by musical director
David Clark, it is the first time the two
choirs, which both perform regularly for
local, national and international charities,
have come together in such collaboration.
“Many people are affected by breast cancer
or are touched in some way by a family
member or friend who has the condition,”
says Marion Orchard, chairman of the
Orpheus Singers. “This is an excellent
opportunity to support Southend Hospital’s
Bosom Pals Appeal.”
Copies of the CD, priced at £7, are now on
sale at selected local retailers, by calling
01702 547315 or 07767 376176 or by
visiting the Orpheus Singers website

Local History
Between 1941 and 1942, communities across the country were encouraged to adopt a Royal Navy Warship by way of a National Savings Scheme.
The campaign allowed individuals to invest
their money into Government schemes such as
War Bonds and Savings Certificates. Each
region was given a savings target to achieve
based on the population in what were known
as “Warship Weeks” and the amount raised
would determine the size of vessel that could
be adopted. There were 1178 Warship Weeks
held across the country raising a total amount
for the War effort of £955,611,589. The
region adopting the vessels would receive a
plaque - often presented by the commanding
officers.
About 10 years ago, Janet Penn of the Canvey
Community Archive was contacted with some
information with regards to Canvey Island’s
involvement in Warship Week. Much research
followed and eventually a plaque that had
been donated to the Island by the crew of the
vessel they had “adopted” was found. Canvey
had a target of £14,000 to raise in
Warship Week but managed to raise
almost double that! The vessel they
adopted was a motor launch with gun
armament - HM MLL115.
To commemorate Canvey’s
involvement, a model of HM MLL115
was commissioned by The Bay
Museum and is now on display along
with the Warship Week plaque. Last
month, I met the family of one the
crew members - Petty Officer Burchell
who visited the Island to see the model
of the boat on which their father
served.
When the plaque was found for Canvey
Island, there was also one found for Benfleet.
However, very little is known of Benfleet’s
involvement in Warship Week.
How much did Benfleet raise in Warship
Week? How was the money raised? What
vessel did they adopt?
If you remember or
have any
information at all
we would love to
hear from you. Call
Angela on 01268

If you are interested
in visiting the Bay
Museum, it is open

between 10am and
4pm. It is located on

“Keeping Socialising Social” - that’s the message from the Castle Point Pubwatch, a group of 33 Bars, Pubs & Clubs across Castle Point.
What is the Castle Point Pubwatch?
In essence, the Pubwatch is similar to a
Neighbourhood Watch but instead of local
residents forming a network group, our group
members are local businesses (licensed
premises) working together to keep
troublemakers out of our pubs and bars, and
reduce anti-social behavior and crime.
The Pubwatch is currently Chaired by Alun
Johnson of the Windjammer, Canvey Island
and the Vice Chair is Julie Wheatley of
Riley’s Snooker in Benfleet. The Treasurer is
Janet Woolcock from the CK Bar, Canvey
Island.
What we do!
The Pubwatch consists of managers,
supervisors & owners of licensed venues who
aim to promote the positive attributes to
drinking alcohol and socialising in Bars, Pubs
& Club across the Borough.
Working with Essex Police & Castle Point
Council, we share information on
troublemakers and activities that are likely to
lead to or promote crime & anti-social
behavior in licensed venues, making them
safer and more enjoyable for the majority
who just want to socialise and enjoy
themselves.
BOBB (Behave or Be Banned)
A scheme to ban violent offenders from
Bars, Pubs & Clubs in Castle Point. The
Behave or Be Banned scheme was launched
to reduce the number of violent or public
order incidents in the area and stop offenders
from entering licensed premises.
The decision on whether to ban people and
for how long is made by the Pubwatch
committee and any venue can nominate a
person for consideration for a ban.
Individuals being arrested for violent
offences at licensed premises will
automatically be referred to the Pubwatch by
the Police for consideration.
We want you to get in touch!
The Pubwatch has launched a brand new
website which contains lots of information
for local residents. Our news section is
updated regularly, delivering information
directly to you and you can also use the ‘Get
in Touch’ contact form to send us your
comments and feedback.
If you have any comments, concerns or
feedback relating to any member premises
you can contact the Pubwatch directly and in
confidence by a dedicated pubic email
address [email protected]

Top Tips To Get Some Peace Into Your Life In A Hectic World
In 21 days you can create a new habit which
you can fall back on at any time you need
peace. Don’t worry, you don’t have to calm
your buzzing mind, you just acknowledge
the mental chatter, slow your breathing and
bit by bit, the relaxation comes.
Come to one of my one day massage and reflexology courses in Hadleigh!
You’ll have some great treatments and learn
to give your nearest and dearest a lovely
relaxing treatment. All the students
comment how calming it is to treat someone
else too!
I hope these tips are useful. Do try one or
two and please get in touch on 01702
558623 if I can help more.
Sometimes it seems that everywhere we turn there’s stress, doom and gloom. I don’t want this to be part of my life: it gets me down, lowers my energy, rubs off on other people and affects my home and work. So, here are my best tips for getting some joy and peace back into your life, quickly and
easily.
Turn off the news It will bring your energy
down and do you need to know all the details
of the suffering in the world? I suggest you
are aware but not inundated which avoids
drowning in everyone else’s misery. My
brother in law takes this to an extreme.
Get outdoors in nature We’re blessed
with lovely quiet countryside and beautiful
woods just a few minutes away. Walk slowly;
listen to the noise of the birds, the leaves!
Slow down! I once read that slowing down
your walking to half your normal pace was
good once in a while. It’s really hard to do but
makes you notice things around you. When on
holiday recently, my roommate was
astonished when out on a 6am walk with me,
we saw humming birds! She never saw them
when she was alone as she was always
walking fast and on her phone!
A little exercise helps release endorphins,
balances your stress hormones and gives you a
natural high. Even a stretch in the chair at
work or home helps.
Breathe! Yes, slow that down too. Take
some deep breaths. This will oxygenate your
body, get the good stuff flowing around and
give you time to catch your thoughts.
Learn to meditate There are numerous
courses available online or locally. I love the
Chopra Centre 21 day meditation challenge.

November in History
20th November 1947
On this day, Princess Elizabeth (now Queen
Elizabeth II) married Lieutenant Phillip
Mountbatten at Westminster Abbey.
Elizabeth and Philip were distant cousins
and they first met at a wedding in 1934.
After meeting again in 1939, they began to
exchange letters. The pair became secretly
engaged in 1946 but the formal engagement
was delayed until Elizabeth turned 21 in
April 1947.
2,000 guests attended the wedding and the
ceremony was broadcast on the radio to 200
million listeners worldwide. They received
more than 2,500 wedding presents from
around the world and 10,000 telegrams of
congratulations!
24th November 1815
No-one would have guessed that the seventh
child of lighthouse keeper William Darling
born on this day would go on to become one
of the most famous heroines of Victorian
times. Grace Darling, born in Bamburgh
Northumberland, became an international
celebrity at the age of 22 following an
amazing act of courage when, along with her
father, she saved the lives of 13 people on
the shipwrecked boat SS Forfarshire.
In the early hours of 7th September 1838,
Grace Darling looked out of the window of
the Longstone Lighthouse on the Farne
Islands where she lived and worked with her
parents and spotted that the SS Forfarshire
had hit the rocks of a nearby island and
broken in half. Fearing that the weather was
too rough for the local lifeboat to be
launched, they both climbed into 21 foot, 4
man rowing boat and started on a mile long
journey through the rough sea avoiding the
jagged rocks surrounding the wreck.
There were 9 survivors and as her father
jumped out of the boat to help them, Grace
had to keep the boat steady and avoid
crashing into the rocks. As the boat was not
big enough to carry all the survivors at once,
Grace and her father took back 4 men -
including 1 who was badly injured and the
only surviving woman. Grace stayed in the
lighthouse to look after those they had
rescued whilst her father and 2 of the
survivors went back for the others.
Grace’s story appeared on the front pages of
all the newspapers and she received hundreds
of letters and presents - even Queen Victoria
sent her £50! Grace and her father were both
awarded medals but she didn’t enjoy the
celebrity at all and found that answering all
the letters she received took up so much of
her time she had little time to do anything
else. Sadly, 4 years after her heroic act,
Grace contracted Tuberculosis and died.

Are you looking to raise funds for
your non-profit organisation?
Local businesswoman Marion Irving brings a
brand new concept to the Castle Point area
with the “Peel2Save Card” aimed at raising
funds for charities and good causes.
The Peel2Save fund raising card is a no-risk
way for charities, churches, schools, sports
clubs, youth groups and other non-profit
organisations to raise much needed money.
Peel2Save provides a great opportunity for
them to raise money quickly and easily, with
no risk. If they sell just 100 cards they will
have raised £500 and selling 1,000 cards
would give them £5,000 – which would make
quite an impact on anyone’s fund raising
target.
The credit card-sized Peel2Save cards fit
neatly into a purse or wallet and contain 64
individual peel-off coupons with each coupon
promoting money-saving offers and discounts
from a great local business.
The Peel2Save card is now available and is
valid for 12 months. It contains many great
offers from 27 different local businesses, with
the value of the offers well over the £300
mark! The Labworth, The Oysterfleet, Flutes,
Maharaja, Perfect Pizza, John Coronado
Hairdressing, Discount Pet Superstore,
Canvey Florists, Castle Point Motors, The Bay
Tree Café, Fiona’s Beauty Studio, Movie Starr
Cinema, Vi Bowl, The Muddy Creek Cafe ,
Smiles & Tears Florist, Sophisti-cakes, Totally
Fish Fishmongers, T & C Chinese& Thai
Cuisine,Peggottys, Les’s Cycles,
Kebab & Burger Hut,
The Bay Café, Village
Chinese, Hed Candi
Hair & Beauty,
Raspberry Ripples
Coffee Shop, Rays
Quality Dry Cleaners and Fitness 4 Life are all
featured on the card with very generous
offers !
Marion Irving told us “Peel2Save is a fantastic
idea. It has been working brilliantly in the
USA for many years. It’s a real community
initiative, giving local businesses the
opportunity to promote their businesses to
local people. The offers have real value and
broad appeal and there is something for
everyone. Anyone who buys a card will soon
recoup their money and will have also raised
funds for a charity or good cause. It’s a
definite win-win for local businesses, good
causes and local consumers.”
The local Peel2Save initiative is hoping to
raise £30,000 in the Castle Point area for
charities and good causes over the next twelve
months. They are currently available from The
Rooms, 361 Long Road, Canvey Island who
are raising funds for Breast Cancer Awareness.

This month, Michael Clark (Registered Osteopath, Nutrition & Holistic Lifestyle Coach) discusses top tips for healthy digestion.
Digestion is the process whereby we extract
nutrients from the food and liquid we
consume and eliminate waste. Poor digestion
and digestive disorders are now very common.
However there is much that can be done to
improve digestion and in turn our health,
energy and overall well-being.
Choose healthy food options
Choosing what we put in our mouth is one of
the first stages of digestion. With busy
lifestyles it can be difficult to make the best
food choices. My advice is ‘buy the best you
can afford’ and ‘be prepared.’ Buying fresh
seasonal fruit and vegetables, free range
meats, wild caught fish and organic whenever
possible will ensure you are getting high
nutrient values along with little/no unwanted
chemicals. We are spoilt for choice in Essex
we can buy our food from Organic delivery
companies that deliver to our door, local
butchers, local fishmongers, and local farms
and farmers markets as well as online
companies. By taking steps such as preparing
meals and snacks the night before, making
food in batches and freezing it and
looking up where to buy fresh produce
when travelling will help ensure you are
not forced into a situation where you
have no choice but to eat poor quality
food.
Avoid processed food
In our modern diet, inexpensive
processed foods are convenient and
freely available, however they are often
full of sweeteners, artificial colourings,
flavourings and preservatives, cheaply
processed fats and synthetic vitamins.
Extensive research has shown that processed
foods/chemicals 1. Can be broken down in the
body to toxic molecules. 2. Can cause
undesirable biological effects 3. Your body
may treat it as a foreign invader and release
powerful antibodies which can cause tissue
harm. 4. The nutrient values are often so low
that your body is unable to run is normal
healthy biological systems such as digestion,
immune function etc.
Avoid Common food allergies
Food allergies and/or sensitivities are a
common reason for poor digestion. Anyone
can have an allergy to almost anything. Some
of the most common include: Pasteurised
Milk and Dairy, Soy and Wheat (Gluten).
Avoiding these completely for 30 days will
help determine if you have a food allergy.
Don’t overcook your meats
Meat becomes progressively more difficult to
digest the more they are cooked. Free range
and organic free range meats have much lower
risks than mass produced meat. The largest
risk group of meat is undercooked burgers and
chicken. However there is a vast difference
between having meat ‘well done’ versus
cooked to the point of destroying any nutrients
and making them very difficult to digest.

The importance of water for healthy
digestion
To digest food once it enters into our stomach
you need to have adequate stomach acid to
further breakdown food and conversely you
need to have a healthy protective mucus
stomach lining. Large scale studies have
tested the acid levels (pH) of those
experiencing symptoms of heartburn,
indigestion, and GERD and contrary to
popular belief the stomach acidity is often
INSUFFICENT and they have an
INADEQUATE protective stomach lining.
Dehydration has been shown to be a major
factor in causing this imbalance. Our entire
digestive tract requires plenty of water to
enable optimal function. The protective mucus
stomach lining is predominately water and
therefore if you are dehydrated it is very
difficult to naturally produce this protective
barrier. Your body will therefore reduce the
stomach acidity (make more alkaline) to
prevent ulceration but this significantly
impairs the stomachs ability to break down its
contents.
Studies have shown that by drinking 1.5-2
litres of PLAIN water throughout the day to
be extremely beneficial for heartburn,
indigestion, GERD, and also bloating and
constipation! It’s also advisable to drink a
glass of water 20 minutes before any meal and
minimise fluid intake whilst eating.
Eat in a relaxed environment
Eating in a relaxed environment is crucial for
allowing healthy digestion and should not be
overlooked. When we are highly stimulated
by TV’s or eating on the go, or in loud busy
environments it stimulates our sympathetic
nervous systems which stops normal digestion
and diverts circulation away from our
digestive organs and glands to our muscles.
Chew your food slowly
Chewing your food thoroughly and taking
your time has a large number of benefits.
The majority of digestive enzymes are
actually in your mouth so chewing for
longer periods will aid the breakdown of
food. It allows for your body’s receptors to
give feedback when you are full and thereby
reducing the risk of over consuming
calories.
This is by no means a complete list and
there are many other things you can do to
improve your digestion. The better your
digestive health, the better you will look and
feel.

Local People
A renowned Walt Disney Artist and Children’s book illustrator from Castle Point has joined forces with his daughter to publish a new children’s picture book series to raise money for a wildlife charity.
The Jet-Set are lovable superhero animals
that rescue wild animals in trouble and are
the brainchild of 72 year old Colin Wyatt
and his daughter Debz Hobbs-Wyatt (42)
who is also an author and founder of a new
indie publisher called Paws n Claws
Publishing. The stories, while fun and
educational, are also true to the philosophy
of the international wildlife charity: The
Born Free Foundation. The charity will
benefit directly from the profits resulting
from the sale of these books
Colin, a former art editor of the Judge Dredd
comic 2000AD and co-creator of the BBC's
1990s cartoon series The Poddington Peas,
started working for Disney in the 1970s and
his portfolio includes the Mickey Mouse
comic.
He said: “I had the idea for The Jet-Set some
time ago and was thrilled when Debz
suggested she publish the books and
proceeds will help real wild animals.”
Daughter Debz founded Paws n Claws to
support wild animals by raising awareness
amongst children. Previously she selected,
edited and wrote one of the stories included
in Gentle Footprints, a Bridge House
Publishing title launched by Virginia
McKenna at the 2010 Guardian Hay festival
and also featuring a short story by Watership
Down author Richard Adams.
She said: "It’s a wonderful feeling to know
how the books we publish not only raise
awareness but wild animals also benefit
directly from the money donated."
The Jet-Set’s first four-book series is now
available from online book retailers or you
can ask your local bookshop to order it for
you.
