Spring at last! It’s always lovely to start

thinking about getting back outdoors again in

the spring and if your home or garden needs a

bit of TLC after the winter months, Your

Benfleet & Hadleigh features lots of local

businesses that can help you prepare for the

month’s ahead.

People’s thoughts are now turning to the two

exciting celebrations we have coming up over

the summer. First of all we have the Queen’s

Jubilee at the beginning of June. Some local

groups have already started celebrating this

momentous occasion including local groups of

the Women’s Institute. (See our article on page

18). We would love to hear your stories and

see photographs of any street parties you hold

to celebrate to include in a later magazine or

on our website.

Soon after the Jubilee celebrations, we will be

heading into the Olympics. The Olympic

Torch will be passing through Hadleigh on

Friday 6th July. (read more in our article on

page 8)

In future issues we will be sharing some

articles with you from the Hadleigh &

Thundersley Community Archive. You can

have included an introduction to the site on

If you are planning or attending a street party to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, you may be interested to know that street parties have a long history in the UK.

The earliest parties were held around the end of World War I in 1919 with “Peace Teas” to celebrate the signing of the Treaty

of Versailles. They were tea parties that were

focussed on a special treat for children in

those times of hardship and were quite

formal sit down affairs. These street parties

organised by residents were very popular

and were probably a development of the

more formal public street dinners that had

historically been held for occasions such as

Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897.

Since that time the community get-together

has grown in popularity as famous events are

celebrated across the nation on a local level.

1945 saw the VE (Victory in Europe) Day

street parties as streets gathered together to

celebrate the end of the war in Europe. Cries

of “God save the Queen” rang through the

street parties of 1953 as the celebration of

Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation on 2nd June

brought thousands to the streets

to welcome their new monarch

and watch the first Coronation to

be broadcast on TV. It was on

this day that a British classic dish was born - Coronation Chicken which remains a

popular nostalgic party dish to

this day.

Other major events that have

been celebrated with street

parties include

the Queen’s Silver Jubilee

in1977, the Royal Wedding of

Prince Charles and Lady Diana

Spencer in 1981 and, of course, last year’s

Royal Wedding of Prince William and

Catherine Middleton. It has not only been

Royal events that have joined residents

together though as England’s World Cup

Victory in 1966 had people across the

country joining together to celebrate with

street parties.

Originally, the traditional street party was at

times of austerity so food would have been

simple and consisted of whatever was

available. In 1953 for the Queen’s

coronation, food was still rationed after

World War II but households were given an

extra pound of sugar and 4 oz of margarine

for the celebrations.

The parties of today may not have the same

constraints but they will still be a celebration

of traditional British food and tradition. Over

1 million people joined a street party for the

wedding of Prince William and Catherine

Middleton last year and even more are

expected to be celebrating the Queen’s

Diamond Jubilee with barbecues, bunting

and Union Jack flags. However you plan to

celebrate, it is a wonderful time to get

together with friends, family and neighbours.

The Olympic Games

On Friday 6th July, the Olympic Torch will travel between Ipswich and Chelmsford passing through Hadleigh on it’s journey.

Fourteen Torchbearers, six of whom are from

Essex, will carry the Olympic Torch through

Hadleigh wearing white and gold uniforms.

The Torch will arrive in Hadleigh at 1.49pm.

from Leigh-on-Sea and will be carried along

the London Road and the High Street before

turning down Chapel Lane towards the

Olympic Mountain Biking Course at

Hadleigh Farm. At 2.30pm it will be

transported by bicycle around the Hadleigh

Farm Mountain Bike Course, then returning

along Chapel Lane and on to Victoria House

Roundabout where it will turn down Rayleigh

Road. It will then be transported by convoy

from Hadleigh to Basildon.

The Olympic Torch

The Olympic Flame or Torch is a symbol of

the Olympic Games. It originated at the

ancient Olympic Games held at Olympia,

Greece, from the 8th century BC to the 4th

century AD. A sacred flame burned

continually on the altar of the goddess Hera.

At the same time, heralds were

summoned to travel throughout Greece

to announce the Games. The Olympic

Flame was reintroduced at the 1928

Olympics at Amsterdam and the

modern tradition of moving the

Olympic Flame using a torch relay

from Greece to the Olympic venue

began at the Berlin Olympic Games in

1936.

The Olympic Flame is lit from the

sun’s rays at the Temple of Hera in

Olympia, in a traditional ceremony

among the ruins of the ancient Olympic

Games. After a short relay around Greece, the

Flame will be handed over to London at a

ceremony at Athens. The Olympic Torch

Relay will start at Land’s End on Saturday

19th May 2012 and will then visit more than

1,000 cities, towns and villages in the UK. It

will arrive in the Olympic Stadium on Friday

27th July as part of the Olympic Games

Opening Ceremony.

The Mountain Bike Events at Hadleigh

The Mountain Bike events at London 2012

take place at Hadleigh Farm over the

weekend of 11th-12th August, the final two

days of the Olympic Games. The event is held

as a single race around the course, with all the

mountain bike riders starting together. The

winner is the first to cross the finish line and

gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded.

The women’s event will

see 30 to 40 riders

complete a distance of

20 to 25 miles on the

Saturday, and 50 to 60

men will complete a

distance of 25 to 30

miles on the Sunday.

The Community Archive

was officially launched in

September 2011 in Hadleigh

Old Fire Station and is now

available to view online at

www.hadleighhistory.org.uk

Anyone can contribute to the site by

uploading photographs, documents,

memories or any information about the

history of Hadleigh and Thundersley. It is

very easy to do with simple instructions to

follow online but if you need any help at all -

either in writing your story or publishing

your documents to the site - you can e mail

[email protected].

You can also meet representatives of the

Hadleigh & Thundersley Archive to chat

about your memories and view the website.

Drop in sessions are held on the 1st

Wednesday of every month at Hadleigh Old

Fire Station between 2pm and 3pm and on

the 2nd Saturday of each month at Hadleigh

Library between 10.30am and 12noon. You

can take your old photos, documents,

newspaper cuttings or other memorabilia

along to these sessions for scanning.

The Hadleigh & Thundersley Community Archive was formed in 2010 in partnership with Essex County Council Libraries and The Essex Record Office.

A community archive was already in

existence for Canvey Island and Heritage

Lottery funding was obtained for a further

six archives in South East Essex. Together,

these archives are known as the South East

Essex Community Archive Network

(SEECA).

The archives are run by local people with an

interest in their town. Thundersley had not

originally been included in the six new

archives but at an early meeting of the

Hadleigh Community Archive it was agreed

that Thundersley, including Daws Heath,

should be incorporated with Hadleigh.

From late 2010 through to early 2011,

regular meetings were held in Hadleigh

Library to generate interest in the

community archive. Several of these

meetings included talks by local people and

covered topics in all of the areas within

theme of the event was The

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee so

Doreen sent an invitation to the

Queen herself to join the regular

members. A lovely letter from one

of the Queen’s Aides was read out

to the group offering the Queen’s

apologies and best wishes!

Although the meeting was fun and

lively, there was a more serious

note as Elaine Arnold, a

representative from the local WIs

chosen charity the Basildon

Women’s Refuge, explained a

little about the work that they do in

helping the victims of domestic

violence. The annual Spring meeting of 5 local Women’s Institute was held in April with over 160 ladies in attendance. The theme for the meeting was the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

If you thought that the Women’s Institute

was dowdy and dull with no place in modern

society, think again! The walls were rocking

at this year’s Spring meeting when local

members danced in the aisles as talented

young singer Anna McDonald entertained

them with “Songs Through The Decades.”

The 5 local groups in Castle Point are South

Benfleet WI, North Benfleet WI,

Knightswick WI, Canvey WI and the newly

formed Furtherwick WI and this year’s

meeting was hosted at the Paddocks on

Canvey Island by the Knightwick WI.

The event was organised by the president of

the Knightswick WI, Doreen Marston and

her committee. A fabulous afternoon tea was

served before the entertainment began. The

5th May1930

On this day in history, Amy Johnson (born

1st July 1903) became the first woman to fly

solo from Croydon, England to Darwin,

Australia. It took her 19 days to fly the

11,000 miles in her Gipsy Moth aircraft

named “Jason.”

Amy started flying as a hobby and gained

her Pilots Licence at the London Aeroplane

Club in 1929. She set several other records

during the 1930s flying either solo or with

her husband, Scottish aviator Jim Mollison.

She joined the newly formed Air Transport

Auxiliary in the 1940s during World War

Two. The job of the ATA was to transport

Royal Air Force aircraft across the country

and Amy rose to the position of First

Officer.

She died on January 5th 1941whilst flying

for the RAF Kidlington. She went off course

in bad weather and drowned after escaping

into the Thames Estuary. She was seen to be

alive in the water and a rescue attempt was

launched but failed. Her body was never

found.

11th May1820

On this day, the HMS Beagle was launched

May in History

from the Royal Dockyard of Woolwich on

the River Thames. She was a Cherokee class

10-gun brig of the Royal Navy and cost

£7,803 to build.

HMS Beagle is famous as it was the ship in

which the naturalist Charles Darwin sailed

around the world from 26th December 1831

to 27th February 1832. The rich variety of

animal and plant species that Darwin saw on

the voyage on the Beagle led him to develop

his theory of “evolution by natural

selection.” Darwin realised that life was a

constant struggle for survival: more

creatures were born than the world’s

resources could sustain. Any individual with

an advantage over its fellows would be more

likely to endure long enough to reproduce

and perhaps pass on its advantage to the next

generation.

HMS Beagle made three voyages of

exploration:

1826 - 1830: The first surveying voyage to

Tierra del Fuego, South America.

1831 - 1832: Darwin joined the second

voyage to South America and then around

the world.

1837 - 1843: The third surveying voyage to

Australia.

Healthy Living

Are you out of balance?

Recently I’ve had a couple of clients with really terrible problems with balance which had totally disrupted their lives for many

months or years. In my work, no matter what the doctor has diagnosed I ask “what’s been going on in their lives recently” and then I listen.

I always hear of some long term stress. It’s

as if our internal pressure cooker gets to a

long simmering boil and then it explodes.

Our bodies are equipped to keep us in

balance, whatever we throw at them and they

do an amazing job to keep us breathing and

upright! However, we can take only so much

and then something just has to give. We may

have had earlier warning signs but often

we’re so busy that we carry on our stressful

way.

The photo (above) is of Oak Creek in

Arizona which is an area where the earth’s

energy is reputed to be especially strong. In

a clearing I came across hundreds of these

“cairns” or piles of rocks. I stopped in awe

and just gazed. If we have our lives in

balance, everything follows and unfolds

smoothly! I talk a lot about balance in my

work.

When I give reflexology, the feet represent

all of you so a treatment of both feet is like

having a gentle workout all over. This seems

to point out to your brain what it may be

bypassing and forgotten and gives your body

a chance to heal and get itself back in

equilibrium.

When I use Bowen technique, I talk about us

being like a tent. Life’s stresses have caused

your guy ropes to become uneven. Bowen

gently works to get your guy ropes (core

muscles) back in balance so you feel

straighter, less tied in knots, able to stand tall

again and look the world in the face! I often

send patients home with a blend of essential

oils to help them return to relaxation anytime

they choose.

So, what can you do? I advocate what I call

guilt free “brain break.” This is time out for

you away from the “musts” and “shoulds” of

life. Think about what you used to enjoy as a

child. It might be time outdoors pottering in

the garden, walking the dog and really

appreciating your surroundings. It may be a

night away from hubby and the kids visiting

an old friend! Ask yourself what feeds you,

makes you feel good and refreshed and do it

daily if you can. Why not have a holistic

treatment for a special occasion and savour

every moment. Remember how it feels to be

really relaxed and do whatever it takes to find

that feeling on a daily basis.

When I was in Oak Creek I felt to wonderfully

still inside and having felt that feeling, I’ve

taught myself to get into that state any time. If

you’d like help, do get in touch and I’ll teach

you tools to keep your pressure cooker on

low!
