Programme and Newsletter
April – July 2012
Chairman’s Report
Just in case you hadn’t realised, the Olympic Games start in
late July. The effect on our group will be to restrict access to
certain walking areas we like to use during the summer
months. There is also a general appeal for non-Olympic users
not to use public transport. The full impact of this will occur
during August and September. Will all of our walks leaders
please take these restrictions into consideration when planning
for the next programme.
Don’t forget to book your seat for the coach trip on Tuesday 3rd April.
We are off to the Alton Water reservoir/nature reserve near
Manningtree. Pick-up points are shown in the programme. The cost is
£12 pp.
As the three footpath clearing working parties that Joan has organised this
year with Havering Council have been successful we will try to organize
similar working groups to clear overgrown footpaths in the borough. It will entail using secateurs and shears (no mechanical equipment) for a couple of
hours, for further details contact Joan Bullivant.

Ramblers Holidays Walking Partnership
The Havering and East London Ramblers group
has recently joined The Walking Partnership.
This new partnership, supported by Ramblers
Worldwide Holidays, provides direct financial contributions to local walking
groups to help with organising group walks, encouraging people to get out
walking, helping to clear and improve footpaths, providing equipment to help
walkers etc. Over the past 65 years, Ramblers Worldwide Holidays has given
many millions of pounds to assist walking charities and conservation projects
in Britain and the countries they visit on their worldwide holidays. Now our
group can benefit directly.
Ramblers Worldwide Holidays operate group walking holidays in the UK and
all around the world. Each holiday is accompanied by a qualified walks leader,
so you can leave all the organising to them and just enjoy meeting like minded
people and of course, some fantastic walking. Holidays are graded in terms of
difficulty, and there is a full range from sightseeing right up to hut-to-hut
mountain treks. Take a look at their website on www.ramblersholidays.co.uk
or give them a call on 01707 33113 for more details or to order a brochure.
Remember when you book to quote the name of our group, and we will then
receive a contribution of £10 per person on UK holidays, £20 per person on
short haul holidays, and £30 per person on long haul holidays. This extra
funding could really make a difference to us
Secretary’s Report

Bridget Banks Bridget passed away overnight on the 21
st-22
nd January after a long and
courageous fight against lung cancer. She had been a very active member of
the group for a number of years, leading and taking part in various walks.
When Bridget was unable to continue walking she still researched walks on the internet and encouraged others to lead these in her stead. She then liked to
hear all about how the walks had gone. Bridget was also a very keen bridge
player and was able to continue with this until quite recently.
She was a very brave lady who will be missed by all those who knew her, and
our sympathy and thoughts are with her husband, Roger, and his family at this very sad time.
The closing date for the next programme is the 30th
June 2012
As we plan to start to compile August to November programme as soon as the
April programme is issued it would be much appreciated if you could supply
your walks as soon possible especially if you require a specific date. Our drop dead date is the 30
th June but please remember the later you leave it the
likelihood the dates that you require will be more restricted.
If you would like to lead a walk on the next programme, please contact the
relevant under mentioned person:
To lead a walk on Tuesday, contact Peter O’Neill on 01708 455626
To lead a walk on Saturday, contact Peter Rees on 01708 445177 To lead a walk on Sunday, contact Peter Rees at [email protected]
The committee would like to thank all the people who have given up their
time to lead walks for us all.
It is getting more and more difficult to fill the walks programme so please
remember that we are always in need of people to lead our walks and that if
we have no leaders we have no walks!
If you would like to lead a walk but are unsure about how to start or what is
required please speak to a member of the committee who I am sure will be only to pleased to help you.
The main thing to remember is we are not looking for anything complicated so
start with something simple that you are happy with.

Web Site
If you would like to receive your programme by e-mail instead of a paper
copy please contact Peter Owen on [email protected].
By obtaining your copy in this way it will save us printing and postage costs.
The programme is the largest outlay from our funds. A programme will of course, still be printed but we are hoping to be able to cut down the number
being run off. However, if you decide after a trial of receiving the programme
via e-mail, that you would rather revert to the printed copy please just send another e-mail to Peter Owen at the above e-mail address and you will then be
sent paper copies. All members with e-mail access are urged to try the new
system.
All walks
If the weather is inclement, it is important to either check our web site as noted on page 1or contact the leader to see if the walk will take place.
Please check for the availability of public transport on the TFL web site,
before travelling at weekends to allow for the planning of alternative
routes.
Car share
Please car share where possible, as parking is often quite limited.
Curry Evening
Curry night is Thursday 26th April 7.30 at the Railway Hotel, Hornchurch at
7.30pm. The curry is optional as the full Ember Inn menu is available. The
venue is next to Hornchurch District Line Station, buses 252, 193, and 256
also pass the door. Further details can be obtained from Tony Hyde on
01708 551470.

Walking with the Ramblers
‘All sporting activities have inherent hazards associated with them, and
rambling is no exception. In spite of the safety of members always being the
paramount concern, accident will occasionally occur. It is therefore important
that when entering into the activity, each member appreciates that they have a
responsibility to identify the hazards associated with the activity, and take all
reasonable steps to eliminate or minimize the potential for an accident to
occur’.
The Ramblers Association is a company limited by guarantee, registered in

New Walks and Walk Leaders Required.
It goes without saying that the wide variety of walks available to the group
each week are provided by our volunteer leaders. All these people give freely
of their time to investigate, plan and lead our walks. Having said that, the
walks co-ordinators are always seeking new ideas or people who feel they
would like to lead a walk. This may appear a daunting prospect at first but rest
assured help is always available to either turn your idea into a walk, or support
you in leading it.
If you feel you have something to offer please contact your walks co-
ordinator, or a committee member, who will be only too pleased to advise you.
Please remember that if no one was to volunteer to lead walks there
would be no walks programme and therefore no walks for anyone to
participate in!
