Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig oraibh! to convert the pagan Irish to
Christianity. First though, he
resumed his studies in France
and was eventually made a
bishop, whereupon he finally
returned to Ireland.
The High King of Tara was the
most powerful man in Ireland
and was initially angered by
Patrick’s arrival, but the
bishop’s quiet confidence in his
faith won him over and the
King gave Patrick permission to
preach Christianity around the land.
St. Patrick is famous for having used the
shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity,
“There is one stem but there are three leaves
on it. So it is with the Blessed Trinity. There
is one God but three persons stemming from
the same divinity.”
He’s also famous for having banished snakes
from Ireland though in fact this story is
symbolic. The snake was a symbol of
paganism and was therefore ‘banished’ only
by way of being replaced with the Christian
cross.
Patrick died on March 17th, 461AD and is
believed to buried in Downpatrick, Northern
Ireland.
Today St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated
enthusiastically even by people who’ve
never set foot on the Emerald Isle. It’s a
chance for everyone to celebrate their love of
Ireland and all things Irish.
Why not join in the celebrations. Order a
green beer, a Guinness or an Irish Whiskey
in your local Irish pub, then raise your glass
and shout Sláinte...that’s “cheers” to you and
me!
Which, roughly translated, is “St Patrick’s
Day blessings upon you all.”
March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. Patrick is the
patron saint of Ireland (both Northern
Ireland and Eire). You may be surprised to
learn though that he wasn’t Irish at all. He
was in fact English!
So how did an Englishman become the
symbol of all things Irish?
Patrick’s early life was the stuff of a boy’s
own adventure. He was kidnapped as a
teenager and sold as a slave in Ireland. There
he worked as a shepherd, in harsh
conditions, for six years. Then one night, so
the story goes, he heard God speak to him
and tell him it was time to escape. This he
did and he travelled back to Britain by boat.
Once there though he was recaptured and
returned to slavery. But Patrick didn’t give
up. He escaped again, this time successfully,
and journeyed through Europe before he
finally settled in a French monastery, where
he trained to be a priest. Then he returned to
Britain.
One night he heard voices calling him back
to Ireland. He decided that his mission was

The Orpheus Singers
Since we introduced you to ladies choir, The Orpheus Singers back in 2009, the group has continued to go from strength to strength.
The size of the choir now ranges from 130 to
150 members and the music they are now
producing is very much more complex and
challenging than in earlier days. For
instance, in October last year they took part
in Classic FM’s “123 Sing” Charity event
singing pieces from Handel’s “Messiah.”
This was followed in early January with a
very special re-scheduled Joint
Christmas Concert with the Leigh Orpheus
Male Voice Choir. The audience numbered
400 people and they performed very difficult
excerpts from Benjamin Britten’s
“Ceremony of Carols.” Although it was a
very challenging time for the choir, they
worked extremely hard at mastering this
work, together with polishing their
performance of the pieces from Handel’s
“Messiah” and all the other usual Christmas
carols. It was extremely well received by the
audience and one person even wrote to the
choir afterwards and said, “Just asking you
to let everyone in the choir know that my
wife and I felt that last night’s concert was
one of the best balanced in every respect that
we have been to in many months. If the
attendance last night (both of performers and
audience) continues then we will have to
build bigger halls. Good luck.” LOMVC
Patron, George Turner.
Back in the Spring of 2010, the choir went
on tour to Stratford-upon-Avon and
performed at Holy Trinity Church in aid of
the “Help For Heroes” Fund. Also in that
year, they held several concerts for local
charities as well as becoming a registered
charity - No:1137448.
In April this year, the choir will be going on
tour to Ilfracombe in Devon and will
be singing in more venues than last year,
some of which will be jointly performed
with male voice choirs from that area. In the
summer this year, they intend to make a CD
with the Leigh Orpheus Male Voice Choir
to help raise funds for the Charity “Bosom
Pals.” The CD will contain around half an
hour of their “finest and best” with the men’s
choir doing the same.

Benfleet was a horse and cart provided
by George Land. It was also the first
building in Benfleet to be lit by gas.
In 1924, the Anchor became home to
Benfleet’s first voluntary fire brigade
which consisted simply of a handcart
until enough money had been collected
to buy the first engine in 1925. Also in
the early 1920,s, the Post Office was
part of the building with the sorting
office being in the yard in a converted
stable.
We learn quite a lot about the activities that
took place at the Anchor Inn through Iris
Sugg’s book “Memories of Benfleet.”* As a
child, Iris lived above what was often called
the “Cottage Shop.” Her bedroom looked
towards the Anchor and she would spend
many hours watching the comings and goings
of the establishment.
Iris remembers, “Ted Land owned the Inn
when I was a child. He had no legs and rode
around in a bath chair. On the footrest where
his feet would have been he always had a pet
lamb to keep him company. On occasions,
the rear of the Anchor was used as a knackers
yard where poor worn out horses were
brought to be shot.”
*Memories of Benfleet is an autobiography written by Benfleet resident Iris Sugg with proceeds go to Save the
Children.
Continuing with our Public House theme from last month, we look at the
Anchor Public House.
The building where The Anchor Inn is now
was built in 1380 and was most likely built
as a Court House. Historians have made this
assumption due to the high standard of the
workmanship that went into the construction
of the building and the fact that it was built
at the time of a Peasant’s Revolt. Men were
protesting about the very first poll taxes and
had burnt the existing courtrooms near the
church to the ground. It is believed that The
Anchor building replaced it.
During renovations to the building in 1989,
ornate medieval windows were discovered
facing the stables across the yard. This has
led historians to believe that what is now the
front of the building was originally the
back.
When first recorded as a Public House, it
was called the “Blue Anchor.” The Inn
was very much the centre of village life for
centuries, especially when George Land
and his wife Sarah took over in 1875.
George and Sarah had three sons and a
daughter and the family ran the pub up
until 1964. The well at the Anchor was the
main water supply until about 1899 and in
the 1880’s the only public transport in

Puss In Boots Appeal!
The Puss In Boots Appeal was started after a
cat was seriously injured by a car last
December. The silver tabby was hit by a car
on the London Road in Westcliff-on-Sea and
taken to a vet by a passing cyclist. The cat -
christened Puss in boots by staff - was then
handed into the care of The Essex South and
Southend RSPCA.
The local branch of the RSPCA receives no
funding and veterinary and boarding fees
must all be paid for from charitable funds.
By the end of last year, the bill for Puss in
Boots had come to around £1500 and this
bill is set to rise as it became necessary to
amputate the injured leg.
Many charities are finding fundraising
difficult in this tough economical climate
and the staff felt that Puss in Boots needed
her very own appeal. She still has a long
way to go before making a full recovery but
with your kindness and generosity, they will
be able to clear this huge vet bill and bring
her back to full health.
If you would like to donate to the Puss in
Boots appeal or to the local branch please
send cheques made payable to RSPCA Essex
South and Southend Branch to:
Fundraising Department, 128a High Street,
Rayleigh, Essex SS6 7BU or call Lyndsey
on 07883 433598.
THE MAYOR’S PARLOUR COMPETITION
Castle Point based charity, The Art Ministry, ran an art competition for Year 6 pupils from local Junior schools to produce a picture for the
Mayor's Parlour.
The brief was to depict anything relevant to
the Castle Point area and the finished works
were exhibited from the 8th to the 12th of
November in the Atrium at Castle Point
Council Offices.
The Mayor chose the two winning pictures
which were framed and hung. He presented a
certificate to the winners who were
Westwood School and Leigh Beck School.
Congratulations to both schools, and thank
you to all the children who took part – your
paintings were exceptional – well done!
When the Mayor finishes his reign, the
framed pictures will be presented to the
schools in question. Another competition is
hoped to take place in June for the new
Mayor.
The Art Ministry provides art as therapy for
disabled individuals in the community and is
based in Thundersley.

About 60% of us are, apparently, deficient in
vitamin D and a growing body of research
links this nutrient to a long list of health
benefits. These include lower blood
pressure, stronger bones, better immunity
and help for asthma, type 2 diabetes and
possibly even a lower risk of heart disease
and certain cancers.
Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption
and utilisation of calcium, so you need
adequate amounts of vitamin D for healthy
bones. A deficiency of vitamin D in children
will cause rickets in children and
osteomalacia (soft bones) in adults.
I heard of Vitamin D deficiency from a
friend in Sydney, Australia. He was
suffering from unexplained pain in his chest
and other parts of his body. This young man
isn’t the outdoor type. He travels to work in
a car, gets out in an underground car park
both at work and at home, wears sunblock if
outdoors so his skin was rarely in natural
sunlight. Our bodies manufacture their own
vitamin D and sunlight stimulates our bodies
to make the production process happen.
Unfortunately, sitting in sunlight next to a
window won’t work as the glass filters out
the UV light that we need. Traditionally,
we’ve never spent as much time indoors as
we do now and in winter we go out wrapped
up so our skin never sees the sunlight it
needs.
Being dark-skinned can make you low on D,
as can being overweight as Vitamin D is
stored in fat, where it's less not as available to
the body. Older people don’t synthesize
vitamin D as well and you can also be low if
you have trouble digesting fats.
Researchers from University College London
said that everyone should get at least 15
minutes of sunshine a day.
In winter, can I get enough vitamin D from my diet or do I need to take
supplements?
Fortified foods like milk and breakfast
cereals sometimes contain vitamin D and
good natural sources are egg yolks and fatty
fish such as salmon, sardines and mackerel.
However, it seems you need to eat a lot. One
source said that we need 6 ounces of salmon
or 47 egg yolks a day to get the 1,000
international units (IU) that are recommended
as a daily dose! In the British winter, taking a
supplement from autumn to April is a great
backup plan. Researchers say they found that
taking the supplement with the largest meal
of their day, rather than in snacks or small
meals works best and you absorb more.
Do ask your doctor for a vitamin D test if you
think you may be low. It is good to check
before supplementing if you think you’re at
risk as we all need different amounts. And
when the sun shines in winter, get yourself
out in it, even for just a few minutes. You’ll
feel the benefit! For more information, visit
my website at

March 1950 - JET 1
On March 8th 1950 Rover unveiled the first
car to be powered with a gas turbine engine.
The car was called JET1, and was a two-
seater model powered by the same type of
engine used in a jet.
It was built with the engine positioned behind
the seats. There were air intake grilles on
either side of the car and exhaust outlets on
the top of the tail.
During tests, the car reached top speeds of 90
miles an hour, with the engine running at
50,000 revs per minute. It accelerated from 0-
60mph in 14 seconds, laughably slow by
today’s standards but wildly impressive in
1950.
The car ran on petrol, paraffin or diesel oil,
and fuel consumption was alarmingly high -
about five to seven miles a gallon! (2km to
2.5km per litre)
Rover hoped that production models would
follow. However, it proved difficult to build
an engine small enough to fit in a car, which
was also fuel efficient, so the gas turbine
powered car never offered a viable alternative
to the combustion engine.
JET 1 is now on permanent display in the
Making the Modern World gallery in the
Science Museum.
3rd March 1931 - The Star Spangled Banner was named the official National Anthem of
the United States in a
Congressional Resolution signed
by President Herbert Hoover. The
lyrics come from a poem written
in 1814 by Francis Scott Key, a
then 35-year-old amateur poet.
The poem was set to the tune of a
popular British drinking song,
written by John Stafford Smith
for the Anacreontic Society, a
London social club. United States Code states
that during the playing of “The Star Spangled
Banner” when the flag is displayed, everyone
except those in uniform should stand at
attention while facing the flag with their right
hand over their heart.
18th March 1850
The company American Express was
launched on this day by Henry Wells and
William G. Fargo. Although now best known
for its credit card, charge card, and traveller's
cheque businesses, the company - often
referred to as “Amex” started out as an
express mail business in Buffalo, New York.
At the time, the company enjoyed a virtual
monopoly on the movement of express
shipments (goods, securities, currency, etc.)
throughout New York State.
It was in 1882 that American Express started
its expansion into the area of financial
services by launching a money order business
to compete with the United States Post
Office's money orders. The American
Express Traveller's Cheque which was
launched in 1891 following a trip to Europe
by the company president. He was frustrated
to find that in spite of his position within the
company and the traditional letters of credit
he carried, he was unable to obtain cash
except in major cities.

This month, Michael Clark (Registered Osteopath, Nutrition & Holistic
Lifestyle Coach) discusses the importance of rest and relaxation
Fatigue affects millions of people and is now
the number one reason to visit a GP. The
more time spent stressed and overworked and
lessening time spent relaxing is a major cause.
Fatigue however is just one of many
symptoms which can appear as a result from
lack of rest/relaxation. Others include:
• An accumulation of fat around the belly
button
• Low energy & Mood swings
• Difficult concentrating and poor memory
• Pains in the neck, shoulders and low back
• Weakened immune system causing frequent
colds and minor illnesses
• Difficulty recovering from injures
And many more
The 3 types of rest
For many, short term pick me ups are the only
way to get through the day. This is less than
ideal and causes major fluctuations in blood
sugar, insulin and cortisol levels which
disrupts normal hormonal physiology. There
are three types of rest. Active rest, Passive
rest, and Total rest. In order to
have a healthy body and mind
we need on a daily basis a
good proportion of each. Our
brain and body requires a huge
amount of energy to stay alert.
Not resting is akin to having
all the electrical appliances in
your house on full 24-7. The
result is a deficit in the amount
of energy used by the body/
mind.
Active rest
Active rest is a reduction in
workload and hopefully something you enjoy.
It’s just as important for someone who is very
inactive such as those in sedentary jobs to
perform active rest as it is someone who
‘never stops’. If someone is struggling with
work, reducing intensity or setting fewer goals
can be a
valuable way
to avoid time
off work and
return to full
duties quicker
and more
efficiently.
Sports people
would train at
60% capacity
or change to
lower
intensity
alternatives
e.g. a boxer
doing light
bag work instead of sparring, a runner
reducing to a jog etc. There are many ways to
relax whilst being active e.g. keen gardeners
may spread one days work over a two day
period, or people can try enjoyable new
activities within a range that makes them feel
35 www.yourlocalmags.co.uk
to achieve optimum
work productivity,
achieve peak physical
performance,
improve our immune
system, have
consistent stable
energy and to think
clearly and
creatively, it is vital
to schedule into
every day, high
quality, active,
passive and total rest

good and relaxed such as, going for a walk at
lunch, cycling, swimming etc.
Passive rest
This involves taking the intensity down even
further involving quiet time and stillness
which takes your mind completely away from
work or anything stressful. Watching TV for
hours is NOT ideal. A 10 minute, time out
break, outside in the fresh air and relaxing
your breathing is amazingly beneficial.
Passive rest includes, lying undisturbed in a
bath, reading, meditating, listening to music,
painting, having a massage, sitting in the
garden etc. Passive rest will reduce stress,
promote physical health, and increase
creativity and problem solving.
Total rest
This is something I covered in more detail in a
previous article. In short, total rest is high
quality sleep. For
hormonal reasons our
body is optimally
designed to be asleep
by 10pm and to have
8 hours of quality
sleep. Our body does
most of its physical
repair between 10pm
and 2am if asleep.
Between 2am to 6am
is when the majority
of psychological and
memory processing
occurs, if asleep.
Missing any part of
the sleep cycle has
been medically shown
to have major affects on short and long term
physical and mental health. Achieving high
quality sleep is vital for good health.
This is by no means a complete list and is not
intended to treat any specific person. In order
