The Importance of Being YOUNG

One of the challenges of education at the beginning of the 21st century is the active integration of students in their learning process in such a way that it results in a value of paramount importance in education in general. The schools involved in this experience would like to work in this field because they do believe that pupils’ reality and needs are not self-evident and a thorough analysis and reconnaissance of those is an absolute necessity every day.

Therefore using the opportunities of the Socrates 1 – Comenius Linguistic Project of the European Union, a project was launched to develop materials aimed at activating students to become aware of their wants and necessities in a thorough way and the school staff to build up the best educational response.

The Istituto Tecnico Agrario “G. Garibaldi”, Macerata, Italy and the Schwalmgymnasium, Schwalmstadt, Germany have worked on a Comenius Linguistic Project (The Importance of Being YOUNG), approved and supported by the European Commission.

LIFE School LIFE School Playing Truant : a (very) Short Story /1

There was nobody in the street, as Chiara expected. She walked in a small dark lane, near the city centre, not far from her house. In the afternoon Chiara had slept for such a long time that she was a bit confused about the hour of the day; she only noticed that the weather was changing very quickly, the sky was getting darker.

She decided not to go to school that morning because her History teacher would give a test to the class and she hadn’t studied for it at all. Chiara was a little girl , quite shy, with brown hair and black eyes. She was in that narrow and dark street - not in the main street because her parents might see her - waiting for her best friend Costanza.

They would have together their fir1st experience of playing truant from school. She expected the road would be empty at that time of the day, but suddenly people begun to walk along the street: they seemed to go back home. “How strange !” she thought .

There was an old woman, a couple of men walking fast and talking loudly, a group of noisy workers and a lot of apparently busy boys and girls. Now it was really dark and the lights appeared in the street and in the houses.

As soon as Chiara realized that it wasn’t late morning but early evening she saw a tall man, walking very fast towards her. It was her Father. He was getting angrier and angrier while coming closer. “I’m sorry Dad ... “ she said. Chiara’s voice was so sweet that her father, showing all his good paternal heart, only told her: “OK, Chiara, but it must be the first and the last time. Come home, you have to study History for tomorrow’s test, don’t you? “.

They came back home together without saying a word. Her mother helped her study Giuseppe Garibaldi, the hero who didn’t want to play truant in the History of Italian Independance. Costanza

A Very Bad Day /1I like all the sports, I’m always running and trying to keep fit, but karate is my favourite.

A lot of people think it’s a violent sport, but it isn’t. It’s very exciting and challenging, because you can learn how to control your emotions.

It was Sunday and I had an important karate competiton.

We arrived at “Palazzetto dello Sport” and I hadn’t eaten because I was really agitated.

We were about 20 girls in my category (from 14 to 17 years old, +60 Kg) and we waited for the start of the competition.

A Very Bad Day /2I was with my coach who reminded me of my duties.

The category was divided into 2 tournaments, 10 girls each, the first two girls in each pool played for the first four positions.

The competition started and it was my turn. I had 5 matches.I won the first one 3-0 and the second 2-1.

But I didn’t fight very well during the third one because I was tired, so I lost.My coach was very angry and I was sad.

When I came back home my parents told me that the most important thing was enjoying myself and partecipating.

Do you know what the Italians do when they go out?

Well, this is my typical Saturday afternoon schedule. I ride from Tolentino to Urbisaglia on my tuned motorbike (12 km about) to visit my friends. When I’m there, I knock at the door of my best friend’s house and then we meet the others and decide where to go together.

Usually we go to the Soccer match, because some of them play in the local team and we support them, screaming against the opponents, the referee, but anyway our friends regularly loose.

When the match ends we go to a little bar where we meet other friends. There we play cards, pool, videogames or we talk about soccer, politics, tuned motorbikes and tuned girls.

Going out with friends /2Sometimes we argue with the girls of our group because (like all girls) they spend too much time deciding what to do in the evening. So, the girls usually stay at home and we must go everywhere without them.

We often go to a disco arranging whose turn it is to drive, so, if we are lucky, our parents can take us to the disco at about midnight and fetch us at about at 4 am. In the disco we dance, meet new girls, and talk and talk.... When we don’t go to the disco we go to the cinema and after that we go to a pub.

When I come back home, I am always very tired, and I fall asleep in 1.15 minutes.

The life for Italian families is an adventure every day, because all the people have a lot of work and not much time.

My family gets up at 6.45 a.m. and we have breakfast. My older sister, brother, my cousin, my eldest sister and I go to school at 7.50 a.m. My mother is a teacher and goes to work at 8.30; my father is a farmer and works at home, so he often stays in. I go to an agrarian institute with my 2nd sister and my cousin, while my brother goes to primary school and my 1st sister goes to University. My grandmother and my great-grandmother stay at home, too. They live downstairs.

My father looks after the cattle and my grandmother looks after the poultry and the rabbits. We have five hours of lessons every day, sometimes six, but the periods are always of fifty minutes each and we can go back home early. We usually have lunch at 1.30 p.m. and then we must do our homework. Start




Dailylife in an Italian Family /2We always take care about our farm and it is an important work, because there are a lot of jobs, from looking after the animals to working in the fields, checking the water-levels of our lake and doing other farming activities according to the season. We often go to our great-grandmother’s to talk to her. She is really happy when we go there. When the cat is there, it plays with a bouncey ball in a very funny way and we laugh and laugh. I look after my cows and my pigs with my cousin, but as soon as we finish our work we have a shower, while my grandmother looks after the rabbits, the sheep and the hens. Sometimes we go out to our cousins or to my mother’s parents because they’re alone and really old. After that we return to our great-grandmother and we finish talking. We have dinner at 8.30 p.m. and then we play cards or watch a film. Obviously after that we go to bed!Massimiliano
