Digipak analysis

Outside cover – back and frontThe bands name is at the very top of the case with the album name being just below it. This sticks to conventions as it makes it clear and easy to see when buying it and so people can clearly see who the band is - whether they are a fan or not. Nearly all other albums have this at the top of the case so people will expect to find this information here, this means that they have stuck to the conventions of the genre.

The number six is in the centre of the front cover and is shown in roman numerals. The use of roman numerals seems to feature a lot in bands which use numbers in the name and is a convention used within the genre. One of the connotations linked with roman numerals is a sense of power. This could by why they have chosen to use this to give them the impression of being powerful and headstrong, which are attitudes closely linked to the rock genre.

The back of the case includes the track list but has been done to look like a set list used in a live performance. This links in with the album and with the connotations and conventions of the genre. It links to the album as it is a live album so was recorded from the concert, this makes it look like an image of the set list that they used for the performance. Also, live performances are very closely associated with the rock genre so, by including the image, it reinforces the idea of them performing live and being a part of the rock genre. It makes the track list look much more interesting as it is something linked to the band as opposed to it only having the songs included and nothing else.

There is a parental advisory warning in the bottom right corner of the cover. This not only sticks to the conventions of the genre but it also helps the band to sell more albums as well. The rock genre has the connotations of being rebellious, not following the rules of society, dark and being away from the social norm within society. By including a parental advisory warning, it encourages the idea of the content not being suitable for younger children and sticking with the conventions of the genre. It also helps to increase the sales of the album though as it will encourage younger people to buy it due to being told it is not suitable for them which has been shown to encourage younger people to buy it.

The back cover has the barcode, label information and legal information. By having it on the back of the case, it keeps to the conventions of a digipak as nearly all digipaks and cases have the small print information on the back. This it is done so that it is easily accessible if it is needed (like when purchasing it) and the information can be found out quickly if the buyer needs it for any reason. Another reason that it is done though is so that it does not take away from the final aesthetics of the digipak and still looks professional whilst including all of the information which needs to be included.

The spine of the case has the bands name and album name on it. By doing this, it makes it easy to see when they are stacked up so would encourage people to buy it as they can easily see the album.

Two of the panels are covered with a large image of the venue where the album was recorded. The venue is empty with only the lights showing with the rest of the image having a faded and washed out look, this being due to the high contrast between the light and dark in the image. With the only source of light coming from the main stage lighting, it gives a dark feel to the image. Dark colours and images are a convention to the rock genre with nearly all bands using dark colours who are a part of the genre. This creates a rebellious and dangerous nature for the band which is something that fans would expect from the genre.

The image shows the venue where the album was recorded. The image however show an empty venue before all of the audience comes in which is contradictory to the conventions of the genre. Most images of a venue within the genre show a packed venue with lots of fans to show how popular the band is. However, the image works as a contradictory image to the inside of the case, which has the same venue but full of fans. By doing this, it makes the case much more interesting to look at by showing the difference in the set up of process of a concert.

The cover has been signed by the band members. This makes the album feel more personal to the owner of the album. Having it signed by the band members is something which is generally done with digipaks as it gives fans a chance to feel connected to the band and have something to keep which will remind them of the concert.

Inside coverThe inside image spreads across the entirety of the inside of the digipak and is of the inside of the venue during the concert. You can see that there are lots of people at the concert which suggests that they are a very popular and well known band with a large fan base who come to see them at concerts. It is very common to advertise this fact for the band as it will not only show people how they are a popular band but also shows that lots of people like them which gives the idea of them being a band which is worth listening to.

The place that they are playing at is Wembley Arena which would be considered a big event for the band. This is because Wembley Arena is one of the biggest venues that you can play at which suggests that they have made it as a big band and are very successful as a band. By doing this, it sticks to the conventions of a digipak as they are advertising the brand and trying to show them as popular and that they will like the music due to the large amount of people there. Many bands who play at Wembley are big bands who are very famous which emphasises the idea that they are famous and well known which is what they will want to advertise the most.

Included in the digipak are 2 CD’s, a DVD and a booklet which includes images and the band members talking about the concert. This means that it offers extra content to people who buy the digipak which is something which is commonly done with digipaks to encourage people to purchase it. The 2 CD’s give the buyer more of the bands songs which is something that they will want to get if they are big fans of the band. The DVD allows them to experience the concert again or for the first time and the booklet gives the audience a chance to get to know the band more and see images that they may not have seen elsewhere. All of these elements stick to the conventions of a digipak as it encourages people to buy the digipak due to the extra content that they will receive that they would not get elsewhere

People in the crowd are pulling the “rock symbol” which is closely related to the rock genre. It has the connotations of being rebellious, dangerous and going against the crowd which are all also connected with the rock genre. Due to it being such a strong connotation of the genre, it demonstrates the strong relationship between the band and the genre of music that they play in.

The amount of people in the crowd is a complete contradiction to the empty venue shown in the outside/opening cover. This contradiction works well for the digipak as it could suggest how they wouldn’t be there and never would have made it without there fans being behind them. It also shows the process of how it starts off with an empty stadium but it doesn’t truly become a concert until the fans get there. By doing this, it sticks to the conventions of a digipak as most digipaks include something which is personal to the artist and that has a message within it.

There are lots of camera flashes in the image which shows how fans want to see them and remember the concert by taking images of them. It also shows how they have lit up most of the stadium with camera flashes and light from phones with nearly everyone having their phones out. You can also see right to the back of the arena which demonstrates just how many people are there to see them, all of this adding to the idea of them being a popular and well known band within the genre
