Treaties Recognition Week

"We are all Treaty People." During the week of November 1-7th in Ontario is Treaties Recognition Week. This week, we

recognize the importance of treaties and bring awareness to the treaty relationships between Indigenous and non-

Indigenous people in the province. There are 46 treaties in Ontario and we all have a responsibility to honour the treaties.

We know from the land acknowledgment that York Region District School Board is located on two separate treaties: Treaty

13 and The Williams Treaties. Understanding the history of these treaties is essential to understanding our own relationship

with this land. Returning to a meaningful Treaty relationship offers Canadians a way to make reconciliation a concrete

action. Indigenous traditions, ways of life, and the richness of their Languages provide us with the roadmap.

GUIDANCE NEWS Upcoming Dates Wed Nov 3 - Take Our Kids To Work Day (grade 9s) Peer Tutoring is Back! Peer tutoring will happen VIRTUALLY through google meet breakout rooms this year after school. Students in grades 10-12 are invited to become peer tutors. This opportunity can be used to earn community involvement hours. Please see the guidance Google Classroom for more information and to sign up. Students in grades 9-12 who would like a peer tutor can request one by going to the guidance Google classroom and completing the “Want a Peer Tutor?” Google Form. Once you are paired with a student to tutor, you will receive an email to confirm the date and time of your first meeting Please check your GAPPS email for this information! They can be distinguished from other students who may have equally high academic results by virtue of their breadth of interest, intellectual energy and impact on the life of their school and community.

OSSTF Student Achievement Award November 10 - Entry submission due to Mulock staff sponsor

November 19 - Entry to OSSTF (upon selection)

A student, with the support of a teacher who has worked directly with the student, is invited to submit an original piece of writing, visual art or digital media based on this year’s theme, “Our Moment in Time.” Eleven provincial winners will receive a cash award of $1,000.00 and will be invited to the Ontario Secondary School Teachers ’ Federation annual general meeting in Toronto to receive their award. This is open to students of all grade levels. Entry criteria:

Create a piece of writing or work of art that explores the theme.

(This could include, but is not limited to, a poem, short story, essay, lyrics, painting, drawing, sculpture, digital productions such as videos and music.)

TD Canada Trust Scholarship Deadline: November 15th “scholarships that community leadership first”

Application Link TD scholarships recognize students who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to community leadership. Recipients receive up to $70,000 for tuition

and living expenses as well as opportunities for paid summer employment, peer networking and mentorship. Supporting young community leaders is one way TD is helping build a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow.

$10,000 for tuition each year -For a maximum of 4 years

$7,500 for living expenses each year For a maximum of 4 years

Eligibility Criteria:

Are in the final year of high school

Have demonstrated community leadership

Have a minimum overall grade average of 75% in their most recently completed school year

Queen’s Major Admission Awards: deadline Nov 20/Dec 8 To be eligible to apply for the MMA Scholarship students must first apply to Queen’s University through OUAC by November 20th to ensure access to the Queen’s SOLUS account. This is the account used to apply for the MAA awards by December 8th.

(It takes 4-6 business days to receive your SOLUS account from the date you applied to Queen’s University)

Simon Fraser University Entrance Scholarship and Bursaries *International students may apply December 15, 2021 - Entrance Scholarships April 30, 2022 - Bursaries SFU recognizes high school students who demonstrate excellence in both their academic and extracurricular activities. The SFU Undergraduate Scholars Entrance Scholarship (USES) Program is designed to attract and engage high school students who demonstrate potential to enrich the university community through ongoing academic and community contributions.

Scholarships are available to domestic and international high school students admitted for the fall term to an undergraduate degree in any faculty.

Admission Requirement: Eligibility for these scholarships is based on a minimum admission evaluation score of 90% or 31 IB points (excluding predicted bonus points).
