‘This is one of the two or three great sculpture parks of the world, and it certainly doesn’t have a parallel in the UK.’MICHAEL PALIN

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an internationally renowned centre for modern and contemporary sculpture, presenting work by some of the world’s most extraordinary artists in over 500 acres of beautiful, historic parkland and five indoor galleries. YSP is Art Fund Museum of the Year 2014.

This season, we welcome Wp Wp Wp by Fiona Banner, to Longside Gallery, featuring the artist’s ambitious new project Chinook, an installation formed from two sets of rotating helicopter blades, suspended from the gallery ceiling.

For the festive season, YSP Centre is graced by Emily Sutton’s intricate paintings and screen-prints, which are all available to buy, along with the artist’s delicately embroidered birds.

Ursula von Rydingsvard’s largest ever exhibition continues in the Underground Gallery, featuring immense sculptures intricately carved from cedar beams, and the striking Bronze Bowl with Lace which greets visitors at the entrance to the Park.

In January, Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson’s wonderful choral and projected installation Song for Coal fills the restored 18th century chapel.

FIONA BANNER: WP WP WP 20.09.14–04.01.15 Longside Gallery, YSP Centre and open air

#bannerysp

YSP presents Wp Wp Wp, an exhibition by UK artist Fiona Banner, featuring the ambitious new project, Chinook. The onomatopoeic title of the exhibition mimics the sound of helicopter blades in action, as commonly used in movie storyboards.

Chinook, formed from two sets of helicopter blades suspended from the gallery ceiling and rotating in opposition to one another, further develops Banner’s interest in military aircraft and how we fetishise them. Hovering just above visitors’ heads as if the sculpture were preparing for lift off, the blades are carefully choreographed, overlapping to give the sensation that they might collide. The impact is both mesmerising and unnerving.

Related works reveal Banner’s consideration of film, text and the mythologies surrounding conflict. The film Jane’s documents multiple

unsuccessful attempts to stack the complete set of aircraft encyclopaedias that were published by Fred T. Jane from 1909, suggesting a parody of sculpture making. In Tête à Tête, 2014, two mechanically operated windsocks become protagonists in a bonnet drama, set in the grounds of Longside Gallery.

Ha-ha, 2014, a site-specific work spanning the huge windows of the gallery, features apertures, based on the shapes of full stops from different fonts, editing and apparently making sculptural forms of the landscape beyond.

A special publication designed by Banner’s imprint, The Vanity Press, accompanies the exhibition. This includes an in-conversation by Chrissie Isles, Curator at the Whitney Museum of Art, New York, and text by Clare Lilley, YSP Director of Programme.

EMILY SUTTON: TOWN AND COUNTRY 15.11.14–22.02.15 YSP Centre

#suttonysp

Adorning the walls of YSP Centre, Town and Country – the largest solo exhibition of work by celebrated artist and illustrator Emily Sutton – features a delightful display of original and intricate paintings and screen-prints, along with a flock of beautifully embroidered birds nesting in the YSP Shop window.

Incorporating a love of pattern and detail, Sutton has taken inspiration from the historic buildings and follies at YSP, along with her recent travels in Europe. The artist’s frequent visits to the 500-acre Park have resulted in a collection of new, YSP-inspired, work for the exhibition, including her

first ever limited edition lithograph print, produced by Curwen Studio and exclusive to YSP.

All the works in Town and Country are available to buy, together with a range of exclusive merchandise, designed by the artist, including a tote bag, a pair of plates, a mug, a silk scarf and a cut-and-sew tea towel.

A series of special events accompany the exhibition. Visit ysp.co.uk/events for more information.

AI WEIWEI IN THE CHAPEL Until 07.12.14 YSP Chapel

#weiweiysp

‘Ai Weiwei’s brave sculpture park show is a magical moment for this Yorkshire chapel’ Waldemar Januszczak, The Sunday Times

Ai Weiwei, one of the most important artists working in the world today, is known for drawing attention to human rights abuses and his own unjust treatment by the Chinese government. Ai has developed this project, in collaboration with YSP, as a consideration of the individual within societies and histories.

Forming a congregation in the nave of the chapel are 45 Qing dynasty (1644–1910) chairs from Ai’s Fairytale-1001 Chairs. The chairs originally formed part of the artist’s Documenta 12 project and represented the 1,001 Chinese citizens that he invited to visit the exhibition in Germany. The project highlighted the difficulties of travel for ordinary Chinese citizens. Visitors are invited to sit on the chairs and consider their place in the world.

Also presented in the chapel, Lantern is part of a series of marble works alluding to the surveillance cameras that follow Ai’s daily life, and the lanterns he has defiantly hung from them. Ruyi is based on ritual sceptres that gave the holder the right to speak and be heard, and Map of China shows the country as an isolated land.

Iron Tree, 2013, a majestic six-metre high sculpture is presented in the chapel courtyard. The sculpture unites 97 elements of iron cast from pieces of actual trees.

EVENT: POETRY READINGS 05.10.14, 02.11.14 + 07.12.14 / 14.00 / Free Readings from the poetry of Ai Weiwei’s late father, Ai Qing (1910-96), can be heard on the first Sunday of the month between 2.00–2.20pm.

URSULA VON RYDINGSVARD Until 04.01.15 Underground Gallery and open air

#ursulaysp

‘Ursula von Rydingsvard has opened new frontiers in sculpture’ Roderick Conway Morris, New York Times

The most extensive exhibition to date by highly acclaimed American artist Ursula von Rydingsvard continues in the Underground Gallery and open air.

Featuring immense sculptures, intricately carved from cedar beams, three-dimensional billowing blankets made using cows’ intestines, and delicate handmade paper interwoven with fabric, the exhibition illustrates the full scope of von Rydingsvard’s diverse practice.

The darker winter afternoons offer a unique chance to see the artist’s illuminated open-air sculptures sparkling in the dusk light. Bronze Bowl with Lace, lit from within and giving an ember-like glow, greets visitors at the entrance to the Park, whilst the magical Elegantka II shines outside YSP Centre’s windows.

EVENT: THE ARTIST IN CONVERSATION 13.11.14 / 19.30 / £8 A wonderful and rare opportunity to hear Ursula von Rydingsvard discuss her work, influences and major exhibition at YSP, with Peter Murray CBE, YSP’s Executive Director.

STARTING POINTS: LOOKING BACK DOWN THE LINE 08.11.14–14.12.14 (open 11.00–15.00, Sat–Tues) NAEA

Starting Points, a small group of textile artists, present a commemoration to the First World War in Looking Back Down the Line.

Using archival World War l material, from the National Arts Education Archive (NAEA) at YSP, along with other sources from the period, Starting Points’ members and guest artists have developed their own individual responses to the commemoration. Looking Back Down the Line demonstrates the contemporary relevance of historic materials and provides new insights and understandings into their significance.

Starting Points was originally formed in 2003 to stimulate and encourage personal practice by working with visual artist Hilary Bower and the Bankfield Museum in Halifax.

NICK CROWE AND IAN RAWLINSON: SONG FOR COAL 10.01.15–19.04.15 YSP Chapel

#songforcoal

YSP premieres Song for Coal, an immersive audio-visual work by Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson, to coincide with the end of the 30-year anniversary of the UK miners’ strike.

The highly evocative work, installed in the beautiful and contemplative 18th century chapel, explores the physical and cultural properties of coal and its importance to the region and its communities. Inspired by William Jasper Nicholls’ The Coal Catechism (1898), written as a eulogy to coal and the industrial age, Crowe and Rawlinson have created a sung libretto in collaboration with Opera North. This is presented with a kaleidoscopic projection of rich and powerful images of the recurring patterns of coal.

Through working with the collection of the National Coal Mining Museum, the artists have developed a poetic and historical response to an industry which still figures large in the cultural memory of the region.

Crowe and Rawlinson are based in Berlin and Manchester and have worked collaboratively since 1994. Their work is primarily concerned with the languages of power, its grammar and its rhetoric. The artists were selected for the Northern Art Prize in 2009.

NEW WORK IN THE OPEN AIR

This autumn, Eddy, 2014, by the Anglo-Swiss-Slovakian collective, JocJonJosch, is presented in the Park’s landlocked boathouse. The round boat with three oars is symbolic of the collective’s dynamic, in which the three artists wrestle towards a destination. Also see work by Young British Artists Marc Quinn and Tracey Emin in the Formal Garden.

Later this season, encounter Caroline Locke’s sculpture comprising 14 tuning forks, that resonate at the frequency of the YSP trees. And in November, the installation of Gary Hume’s Snowman, Two Balls Twinkle White marks the start of the festive season.
