RELIEF SCULPTURE RELIEF SCULPTURE Is a
type of sculpture in which the form projects from a background.
In high relief, the forms stand far out from the background.
In low relief (best known as bas-relief), they are shallow.
OBJECTIVES
formal: to introduce the studio fundamentals of "bas" relief (low relief) and "haut" relief (high relief) sculpture.
technical: to gain experience in working with celluclay and joint compound.
High ReliefHigh Relief
• Form that extends half way out of the back ground or
flat surface that it is built on.
Bas Relief/ low reliefBas Relief/ low relief
• Form that is almost flat and very slightly coming off of the background plane.
EXAMPLES OF bas RELIEF
abstract Art
• art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.
• Art that speaks to the essence not the exact replication.
Representational Art
• Form that is recognizable as being an exact replica, or abstraction of a real person, place, or thing.
• Inspired by real life, not just reminiscent of it

How can I abstract an object?
• Exaggeration• Repetition• Altered proportions• Play with one action, trait or
element that it has

• Weaving
• Standing

Day)2.Design ( 1 Day)3.Construction ( 4 Days)4.Joint compound( 1 Day)5.Gesso ( 1 Day)6.Paint with Acrylic paint
Research and design ( 1 Day)
Today we will continue to work on IDEATION.
• Remember the size of your substrate (surface)
• Create 3 possible sketches… talk about your idea with one other person before you show me
• Think big but be reasonable
• What will be the Kinetic addition to your project?
Construction ( 4 Days)
Today we will work on CONSTRUCTION.
• Remember to allow for contrast in your layers
• Use a variety of methods to create levels that are clear
• We want to see 0-4 in terms of levels
• Nothing higher than 2 inches
• Be sure your construction is sturdy
Joint compound( 1 Day)
Gesso ( 1 Day)
Today we will be priming the project and deciding how to add color.
• Gesso your entire project
• Create an updated sketch and color
BE PREPARED TO PAINT FOR 2 DAYS, STARTING TOMORROW.
Paint with Acrylic paint (2 Days)
Today we will be beginning one of two painting days.
Paint!!
