Have you ever looked in the mirrror and asked who you are? Whoam I ? Do you want to know? What presents itself? What do you see, what do you hear, what do you feel? The longer you look, breathe, relax and trust, the truth is there, often literally staring you in the faceand it’s only a matter of paying attention.

Can you slow down long enough to experience the truth and listen tothe inner voice? What is true for you, is it valid? Where do these be-liefs about who you are come from? Do you want to find out? Howdo you do that? How will you know when it is truth? How do yougather the information that gives you a clearer understanding ofthis?and bring forward what you do know your innate wisdom andlet the rest go? Often it can seem overwhelming and we don’t knowwhere to start, so what do we do? I have found Yoga can really help.

The body and mind are our greatest spiritual tools, yet do we reallyask our body for support? It’s there waiting like a wise teacher, givingus messages and signs all the time. Often we aren’t paying attentionor we ignore them because we think we have something more impor-tant to do. The results of this can create great discomfort in our livesnot only in mind but also body. There is great empowerment in learn-ing to remember how and where to look for our own answers.

How many times have you had a gut feeling about something and notpaid attention to it? What have the results been in your life? Often ifwe had only paid attention to that first sign we would be less stressedand much healthier and happier. Life can flow and be easy, so howdo we remember? How do we trust that what we hear is the truth? One way is to ask and keep asking, the answers will come. And asour awareness expands so will we, so that the truth will unfold whenwe can allow it the space to do so.

When we give ourselves the permission to slow down, it’s much eas-ier to see and feel the truth that exists in the body. It’s a bit like peel-ing the layers of an onion to get to the core or the seed where it allbegan. And in this there is much clarity because many pearls of wis-dom are held in that seed and that seed can evolve into somethingmagnificent. Of course we also must put the effort in because the

onion doesn’t peel itself!

Since January of this year, I have been residing and studying Yoga atYasodhara Ashram in the Kootenays, learning many spiritual practicesand tools to deepen my understanding of life and all its wonderfulmysteries. By asking questions like “who am I?” and “what is mypurpose?” and “how can I be happy?” a wonderful unfolding processhappens and we can look at who we are and what is going on in ourbodies and our minds. By following the guidance of other spiritualseekers who have discovered ways that work, we can discover our-selves at a very deep level and watch as our own process evolves. These ancient ways of remembering are valuable tools passed downthrough the ages from the Wise.

Swami Radhas, the founder of the Ashram, brought teachings fromIndia in the 1950’s and even though her approach to Yoga is decep-tively simple, it has guided me into a deeper level of self awarenessand acceptance. The practices have supported me in creating morespace within for my life to be more joyful and filled with light.

As we practice Yoga we form deep grooves or pathways in our beingthat remind us of where our truth is - the truth of who we are. Withdirection and focus the postures can open us up gently into the truthof who we are so we can let go of the illusions based on past experi-ences that may no longer be serving our highest good.

When we begin to follow our own inner guidance, we are able to liveto our highest potential. By tuning in and being an expression of whoyou truly are, you become more conscious and able to live withawareness and peace in each moment.

Each of our paths is unique. As your path unfolds, the story of yourlife and who you are is revealed in all its beauty. Take the time to slowdown and begin to live from your place of inner peace, trusting yourinner knowing.

I believe that as human beings we all want inner peace, happiness andfulfillment. We want to be in alignment with our purpose so that wecan make clear and confident decisions. We long for a deeper con-nection with our inner spirit guide: a wisdom we can trust.

We all have an inner spirit guide that can direct us in our daily lives. Our answers are inside of us. It is simply about making the commit-ment to ourselves to make the time and space to connect with ourspiritual wisdom. Find a quiet and private place and be willing to tapdirectly into spirit.

The greatest guru is your inner self.

~ Nisargadatta Maharaj

To have a fulfilling and powerful relationship with our inner guidance,it involves a willingness to embrace insights that come; it requiresthat we whole-heartedly examine and reflect on our own thoughts, behaviours and habits. As we begin to listen to our internal spirit guid-ance, we create peace of mind and the freedom that comes from trust-ing it.

Be Present, Mindful and CenteredBeing with ourselves involves being present to the moment-by-mo-ment experience so that the space for insight and healing is created.Being present quiets the mind and assists us to be more patient andcalm.

Being mindful is an open way to be conscious and aware of our innerself. This inner focus requires that we slow down long enough to sim-ply notice and be the non-judgmental observer of our thoughts, feel-ings, emotions and body sensations. As we practice non-attachmentto particular outcomes, we step back from habitual patterns and letgo of trying to make something happen.

If you want to experience the joyous ecstasy that life has to offer, there is

one commitment that is absolutely fundamental....Your commitment to

living in the moment becomes your vehicle for spiritual growth.

~Amrit Desai

Be a Good Self-ListenerBeing a good self-listener helps us access our inner guidance. It en-tails being curious, non-judgmental and paying attention to ourthoughts and feelings without anything else interfering in the process. As we hear the essence of what is being guided we become open toour intuition and creativity. As we learn to be with our own responses,we develop the trust in our inner spirit guidance.

There is guidance for each of us, and by slowly listening, we

shall hear the right word...Place yourself in the middle of the stream of

power and wisdom which flows into your life. Then, without effort, you

are impelled to truth and to perfect contentment.

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Be Aware of the Body’s WisdomThe body is always responding to thoughts, feelings and experiences. Therefore, a spiritually guided experience is also experienced in thebody. Body awareness leads to body wisdom – and a deeper connec-

tion to spirit wisdom.

The body has a natural intelligence and wisdom that can add a newdepth of learning. As we remain curious and intuitive about the lan-guage and signals the body is sending, we can integrate the body’swisdom and be more open to creative pathways. The body’s language is different from cognitive and verbal language– and is often called sixth sense, inner knowing, gut reaction and “stillsmall voice”.

When we are more in touch with our body as a result of paying attention

to it systematically, we will be far more attuned to what it is telling us and

better equipped to respond appropriately. Learning to listen to your own

body is vital to improving your health and the quality of your life.

~ Jon Kabat-Zinn

Be ReflectiveBeing reflective is the ability to stand back from a situation or thoughtlong enough to examine its authenticity. Reflective skills involvebeing willing to tell ourselves the truth - without judgment. It involvesthe mindful awareness of our present experience – both while it ishappening and after the experience; it is our ability to move from re-action to creative response.

It takes courage to go beyond self-importance

and see who we really are –

but this is our path… this process begins with self-reflection.

~ Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche

Make Conscious ChoicesMaking conscious choices gives us the power to change what’s notworking. As we become self-aware and our beliefs become conscious,we can make healthier choices to take action to make our lives morefulfilling and abundant.

Once we have a vision of our preferred future, we can live our livesin accordance with that vision. We may have had a dream when wewere younger that we did not fulfill. This is our opportunity to capturethe essence of that dream and bring it to fruition, perhaps in a differentform.

I’m often asked if doing yoga aloneis enough to really stay in shape andgive your body everything it needsfor fitness. My answer to that is,“Well, not really.” Maybe if you weredoing a full-on, super challengingtwo hour practice 6 times a week, butthat isn’t realistic for most people.

Our bodies need a dynamic range ofactivities to stay healthy. If you think about it, we were designed tobe able to do so many things, and it simply makes sense that yourbody craves different and fun ways to exercise. When people ask meabout finding this balance, I ask, “What do you like to do? Do youbike, hike, swim, play soccer, dance, hula hoop? How can you incor-porate these things more into your life? Do you have a gym member-ship? If so, do you actually use it?”

My suggestion is to plan out ways to get dynamic fitness exerciseseveral times a week, and make it fun. Balance this with practicingyoga, ideally a minimum of two or three full practices per week. Andbe sure to stretch with mindful alignment after you work out, even ifit’s just for 5 or 10 minutes. Your body will thank you, and you’ll helpto avoid soreness and injury when your alignment is optimal and yourmuscles aren’t over tight. If you’re not sure what to do, a good ideais to have a private session with your yoga teacher and ask for a spe-cific sequence you can do on your own to safely stretch out the majormuscles that need attention after working out.

Yoga is very important. To me, it is the most important aspect of myoverall approach to health and life. Yet if I don’t work out as well aspractice asana on my mat, my health isn’t supported in the most com-plete way, and I feel it.

If you’ve been following my blog, www.YogaWithKatrina.com,you’ll have noticed stories about my experience with a Fitness BootCamp I took while visiting family in New Orleans. Here’s the storyin a nutshell: I joined a Boot Camp, woke up ridiculously early, worked out as hard as I could 4 or 5 days per week, watched the sunrise, transformed my body and had a lot of fun doing it.

And all the while I was thinking, “Wow! If I combined this with yoga, what an awesome balance that would be!”

I’ve noticed in my own body that if I work out and I don’t stretch, Ipay for it. But when I do a 30-40 minute hard, super effective workoutand then do a yoga practice, my postures are so much stronger andsome stretches are even more available than usual. This is becausethe muscles are primed and warmed up from the fitness routine, andthey’re absolutely thrilled to do yoga after working so hard.

So I developed a Yoga Fitness Boot Camp, which is a satisfyinglychallenging, totally rewarding blend of exercise, alignment, intentionand yoga. I’m really excited about making the discovery of this magicmix in my own life, and I can’t wait to share it with Kamloops!

Yoga Fitness Boot Camp for Women

Sorry guys, this is just for ladies. We have athing about working out together. Even thoughyou’re super fun to exercise with, when it’sonly women we find it a little easier to let ourguard down and not conjure up silly feelings ofintimidation or competition in our heads. Thanks for understanding. Maybe you know alady in your life who might like it.

What it is: The whole idea is that you get stronger and leaner in anenjoyable and empowering way. You can expect a wide variety of fit-ness exercises and dynamic yoga poses, all informed by precise align-ment so you learn good form. (No previous yoga experiencenecessary). You’ll feel your body transforming quickly due to yourdedication. Part of the program is outside in the fresh air, and part ofit is inside in the welcoming atmosphere of the yoga studio. You willwork hard, maybe harder than you’ve ever worked out in an hour, butbelieve it or not, you’ll most likely LOVE the challenge.

What it isn’t: It’s not an advanced yoga class or a straight-up fitnessclass that focuses only on the body. You will not be degraded, yelledat, or belittled at any point in this boot camp, nor will you be made todo anything you don’t want to. Though you’ll get plenty of motivationand encouragement, it is entirely up to you to get the most out of it,and to respect your edge when you find it.

The reason this class is so totally unique and extraordinary is that itengages your whole being – body, mind, and spirit. Think about it: Ifyou’re working with intention and focus while you run, do lunges, orhold a challenging pose, you’re going to get a whole lot more out ofit. If you think about being filled with prana (vitality), your body get-ting stronger, slimming down, and becoming healthier, it helps youtransform even faster.

Boot Camp runs 5:45-6:45am, Monday - Friday at Let’s Move Studio, where the morning view is incredible! Yes, it’s early. It’s worth it!Working out first thing in the morning gets your metabolism goingin a big way. Plus, by the time you’re done you’ve already made thehuge accomplishment of taking care of your body before a lot of peo-ple are even out of bed! And you might be surprised how much moreproductive you can be because of this.

Sessions are May 3 - 27, June 7 - July 1, and Sept 7 - Oct 1. You canregister for 5 or 3 days per week. Details and registration can be foundat www.KamloopsYogaFitness.com. Pre-registration is required, andspots are filling fast so be sure to register now. ALL body types andabilities are welcome. You work at your own level.

Regardless of whether I see you in boot camp, as the weather warms up you have lots

of opportunity to play with the balance of yoga and fitness. Have fun with it!

Today it is esti-mated that over one mil-lion Canadians do yoga, and thatnumber is increasing daily! This is simplybecause of the undeniable life changing ben-efits that a dedicated practice of true HathaYoga will provide. But as a newcomer toyoga, how are we differentiating one practicefrom the next? Perhaps the best insight mightbe gained from a look to the lineage. The his-tory of that practice, the teacher behind thepractice (the Guru), and their teachers beforethem, will show the goal or end toward whichthat practice is geared. It is this that providesthe credibility and shows the direction thatparticular path of Hatha Yoga will take in thefuture – and it will assure you that your time, effort, and money spent on your practice willbe directed to your particular goals.

At Bikram Yoga Kamloops, we are affiliatedwith the Bikram Yoga College Of India, headed by YogiRaj Bikram Choudhury, hiswife and partner Yogini Rajashree Choud-hury with the Principle of the School, YoginiEmmy Cleaves. Bikram and Rajashree’s his-tory

originates in Kolkata India – at the GhoshCollege of Physical Education, establishedand headed by Yogendra Bishnu CharanGhosh, younger brother to Paramahamsa

Yogananda (founder of The Self RealizationFellowship), carrying the tradition of KriyaYoga forward from Mahavatar Babaji Ma-haraj. At the request of his teacher, Bikramleft India to open Yoga schools in Japan andNorth America, and since 1987 has beentraining and certifying teachers for BikramMethod Yoga worldwide to carry the messageof Kriya yoga to the masses for the improve-ment of physical health and mental cultiva-tion to the benefit of all humanity.

Here are a few words from the Principle ofthe Bikram College, Yoginin Emmy Cleaves:

“Bikram Yoga, sometimes also called "hotyoga," is a system of a set 26 yoga posturesequence practiced in a room heated to 100+degrees and lasting 90 minutes.

Bikram Choudhury under his guru's guidanceand using modern medical measurementtechniques, researched and arrived at his spe-cific sequence of postures. The individualasanas are classical hatha yoga. Each classi-cal yoga posture has a specific anatomical, neurological, physiological and psychologi-

cal effect on the human body. The intelligence of any posture se-quence determines the overall benefit of the practice. Bishnu Ghosh,Bikram's guru, said that the root of all chronic illnesses can be tracedto stress. He also said that the human body is self-energizing and self-healing and that yoga is the key to this kingdom of health.

Bikram introduced his unique style of yoga in the United States in1971. During the first 20 years, this style was taught only in his Bev-erly Hills studio, mainly to movie stars and athletes. Bikram was fi-nally persuaded to start a teacher-training program, which opened upthe system to national and international exposure. As of 2004 thereare hundreds of Bikram Yoga studios throughout the world. In recog-nition of the unique nature of this posture sequence, the U.S. Trade-mark office has issued a Trade Mark registration for Bikram Yoga.

In my 31 years of observation, I have seen that most people takingtheir first Bikram Yoga class are suffering from bad body mechanicsand postural dysfunction. Each human body has a specific design tem-plate. Muscles work in pairs in order for the body to execute anymovement or even to maintain an upright posture against the forcesof gravity. Any imbalance in the dynamic tension between the poste-rior or erector muscles and the anterior or flexor muscles will com-promise the vertical loading on the weight-bearing joints. This createsunnatural wear and tear and ultimately disease and pain.

The first 45 minutes of the Bikram Yoga System consists of standingposes devoted to re-establishing muscular-skeletal balance. If donewith sufficient intensity, they create an aerobic benefit as well.

The second half of the class consists of floor postures that address“the great information super highway''- your spine and its correctalignment. Most people recognize their spinal problems during theirfirst Bikram Yoga class.

My first Bikram Yoga class was in 1973. For 20 years prior to it, Ihad taken various yoga classes that had not done much to improvethe flexibility of my rather stiff body. I had also suffered a brainaneurysm. A life-threatening event of this nature shatters one’s faithand trust in one’s body. During my very first Bikram class I immedi-ately recognized the power of the corrective training effect in the sys-tematic and repetitious nature of the practice.

Since 1973 l have continuously practiced and taught Bikram Yoga. Ithas restored my mental and physical strength and my confidence in

my ability to lead a productive life. It has given me the suppleness Ihad previously considered unattainable. My 31 years of practice havegiven me glowing health and age has had no effect on my body'sweight, suppleness or energy levels. There are very few things thatcan disturb the serenity of my spirit and calmness of my mind.

People ask me if I ever get tired of doing the same posture flow. Myanswer is that the practice is never the same because I am continu-ously being changed by the practice. The daily practice challengesyou on many levels. Concentration and attention are quickly sharp-ened. Character issues of patience and perseverance come up eachtime. The practice offers a chance to explore deeper levels of Self anddevelop awareness of the emotions and thoughts that the posturesevoke.

For example, backward bending often initially evokes fear, but youfind the courage and strength to do it. As you become an observer ofthe deeper and sometimes buried manifestations of Self, you come tounderstand yourself more clearly. You start seeing that reactions tochallenges are automatic and habitual and that you can change them. The asana is a path to Self-awareness. The physical becomes spiri-tual.

One of the most common questions of beginners is “why the heat?"On the simplest level it is because warm muscles are more pliable. The heat also expedites the flow of blood to all the organs of the body, facilitating the reactions that the postures are designed to create. Heatwill help the body destroy viruses and bacteria. It strengthens the im-mune system. There are many cultures in which sweating is part ofthe healing process. Think of a Bikram class like a sweat lodge expe-rience.

Bikram yoga is physically accessible to people of all ages and condi-tions. The postures require only normal range of motion available toall, from children to the very aged, provided you are being taught bya certified, qualified Bikram teacher. Beware, however, of the teacherwho claims to teach Bikram Yoga but who has altered the strictBikram regime. By changing the routine, the beneficial effects are de-stroyed; such alterations are much like the difference between a gen-uine Rolex watch and a $20.00 knock-off!”

Spring classes end June 12 *** Summer class schedule TBA!

In this JOYFUL fitness practice, you'll experience the expressiveness of dance, the power of martial arts, and the wisdom of healing arts. To uplifting music, Nia combines avariety of structured and freestyle movements that stimulatecreativity and freedom. Nia will strengthen, condition, stretch, energize, align, inspire and relax you. Suitable foreveryBody of all fitness or health levels. No dance or martial arts experience necessary.

One of the catch phrases I use when teachingNia classes is “change your dance – changeyou life”. We have all built up habitualmovement patterns that our body has becomeso accustomed to that they feel like the onlypossibilities. Our movement choices becomeless varied and less experimental. We beginto move in limited ways, which can con-tribute to aches and pains, and perhaps laterphysical degeneration or disease. Living ina world where we do a lot of sitting also con-tributes to lack of mobility over time.

In Nia classes, there is always a part of theclass that is devoted to what we callFreeDance. The practice of FreeDance is oneof the underlying foundations for exploringthe body and the self. It ignites our desire tolearn more about who we are – and who wecan be - by encouraging us to move differ-ently, listen to music more intimately, anddeeply connect to our emotions. FreeDanceprovides a safe environment where studentsare encouraged to be themselves, feeding themind and body’s appetite for discovery, ex-pression, spontaneity and creativity.

So how can we change our movement habitsin order to change the way we dance throughlife? One of the best ways is simply toDANCE! Dance while doing the dishes, vac-uuming, doing the laundry, or cooking. Ifyou get adventurous, you can tackle thingslike dancing while waiting for the bus, whilein the check out line at the supermarket or li-brary, in the aisles of Value Village, or whilethe barista makes your coffee!

The easiest way to make dance accessible indaily life is to find music that entrances, ex-cites, uplifts, captivates, soothes, or jazzifiesyou. Listening to music from a variety of cul-tures, eras, and genres will bring a sense ofexperimentation to your movement and youlife. Allow yourself to really hear the music,so that you can let the music dance you. Thedeeper the relationship you can create withmusic, the more you can use it to craft a pow-erful experience for yourself beyond just“being on the beat”.

Most of us have a ‘signature’ style of dancethat we have done for years! On the dancefloor at a wedding or a party or at a club with

a live band, we move our feet, our arms, ourhead, and our torso in pretty much the sameway each time. It takes awareness and an un-derstanding of the importance of cultivatingadaptability in life for us to decide to moveto the music in different, unique, improvisa-tional ways. We may feel silly, embarrassed,or self-conscious if we try injecting morefreedom into our dancing in public. Fairenough! One great way to conquer thosedance performance anxieties, is to sample thesmorgasbord of movement choices by takingone of the wonder-full dance or movementclasses offered in Kamloops, such as Belly-Fit, Bollywood, Salsa, Latin, Nia, Belly-dance, Hip Hop, Contemporary Modern,African Tribal, Scottish dance, Irish dance,Zumba, Ballroom etc.

The time of spring leading into summer is anideal season to experiment with bringingmore freedom into your dance and into yourlife!

Issue #15

Throughout my one and a half years of working as an intuitive reader,my own personal mission has been to develop my abilities as a “psy-chic”. During my journey I discovered many ‘truths’ about what itmeans to be work closely with your intuition on an everyday basis, and here I share them with you.

1. You Don’t Need to be Born Psychic to be Psychic.

We have all heard that ‘everybody is intuitive’, and while that is true, there are certainly times when it doesn’t feel true. We tend to havethis belief that prophetic dreams, the ability to see spirits, and a naturalgift to foresee the future from a young age, are all prerequisites to theworld of being a psychic. Wrong. In fact, if you are anything like me,you can be far from it, and still develop these intuitive abilities towhatever degree you choose. By the age of 16 I had had no over-whelming “gut feelings”, no elaborate conversations with my spiritguides. Nothing. The only thing that was apparent was my need andwant for something ‘more’ in my life. And of course, the art of ‘for-tune telling’ fascinated me endlessly, and it felt like something that Icould do, although at the time, I had no real idea of how this wouldhappen. There are many people I have done readings for who alreadycultivated a powerful relationship with their intuition, and there aremany I have done readings for who have never really taken the timeto develop a relationship with this part of themselves. Both thesetypes of people can be psychic if they wanted to. But they have towant to.

2. The More Time you Spend on Your Discipline, the Stronger

Your Abilities Become.

Your third eye is a muscle. The more your work on it, the stronger itbecomes. At the beginning of your journey, you will have to work onit a lot more. It may take a considerable amount of time and energyfor you to get to the frequency you need to be in, to connect with thehigher entities you wish to connect with. As this becomes a habit, anda ritual you practice on a daily basis, you will notice that you startliving in that frequency, rather than just being a visitor. Perhaps youdecide to rent a nice apartment there. You get to know the neighbor-hood, and of course, the neighbors too. You become a familiar facein psychic-ville and you find that it is much easier for you to connect. It is also much easier for you to stop strengthening you third eye, be-cause you start to get a little comfortable. I myself started giving read-ings almost 2 years ago, and I have noticed a significant change sincethen in the accuracy, the depth, the messages, the information, and ofcourse the love I receive in my readings from when I first started outto. Given this, I still make it a point to practice my own “ritual” be-cause I notice that the readings I give after I spend time meditatingand connecting for my own purposes, are far richer than the readingsI give when I have not. Practice makes perfect.

3. A Psychic Reading is Not a Scary Experience. Ever.

When I read for someone who has never had a reading experience be-fore, I am well aware of their reservations about it being a positive

experience. Your guides are from the highest light, the highest love, and the highest truth. They will never crush your hopes and dreams, they will never scare you, and they will never give you an ultimatum. They will only relay profound wisdom, loving messages of hope, de-scribe your “best life”, and indentify what you need to change in orderto start living it. They may warn you if turbulent times are ahead, butthe warning will never come without words of comfort and adviceabout how you can make the best of this time.

4. Your Guides are Always Ready to Talk.

An excuse I hear all the time is “but my guides don’t want to talk rightnow.” Well, I just spoke to them for you, and they said they do. Yourguides and angels are always ready. It’s their job to be ready. Theyare ready to listen and they are ready to talk. The only problem liesin the translation. Sometimes we are not ready to listen, and some-times we do not know how to listen.

5. The Future Always Changes (YOU Change it).

When we meet for a reading, the predictions I make about your up-coming days, months, and years are based on your thoughts at thatmoment. We create our futures through our thoughts, and so naturally,if your thoughts change, your future changes, and the readingchanges. If anything, this truth is liberating, because now you knowthat if you don’t like the route your life is going, then perhaps it’s timeto change your thinking. Whatever I see for you is not “how it willbe”, rather, it’s more like “how it will be if you persist with thethoughts you are thinking, and the way you are living.” And then it’syour job to set the standards. It’s your job to decide if that is goodenough for you.

6. Being a “Psychic” Starts to Feel Alarmingly Normal.

At the beginning of your experience, just a trip to the grocery store isexciting and at times overwhelming. It’s almost as if you becomelisted in the yellow pages of the higher world as someone who canconnect, and at the beginning you are more than likely going to bebombarded with “calls” from guides wanting to relay their messageon earth. With this power, comes the responsibility of setting bound-aries for yourself. Once you have done that, being “psychic” starts tofeel very normal. In fact, I cannot remember not being able to connectwith guides, but the fact that I set my boundaries as to when is an oktime for your guides to give me messages means that I am not always“on”. Why? Because I don’t choose to be. I can tune in and out ofconversations with other peoples’ guides, however I am always rela-tively tuned in when it comes to connecting with my own guides be-cause in any potential-psychic’s path, this is the first and most crucialconnection to cultivate.

ChiRunning is a running technique that incorporates the inner focusand flow of T’ ai Chi to help you run effortlessly and freeof injury, in alignment with the body’s natural run-ning form and connected to the flow of chi en-ergy. Danny and Katherine Dryer developedthis method and wrote about it in ChiRun-

ning: A Revolutionary Approach to Effort-

less, Injury-Free Running. Danny is anultra-marathoner (running distances ofup to 100 miles!!!), and also does T’aiChi, an ancient martial art that workswith our chi, or life force. AngelaJames is the first ChiRunning-cer-tified instructor in Vancouver.

If you’ve never felt your chi andwonder what it is, try this simpleexercise. Rub your hands to-gether in a circular motion untilyou feel a lot of heat in yourpalms from the friction. Thenhold your hands about an inchapart and sense the space betweenthem. You might want to close youreyes to allow your other senses tobecome more sensitive. You mightnotice a ‘cushion’ of air, which feelslike a slight resistance if you bring yourhands slightly closer to each other. Thengradually bring your hands further apart, feeling the energy between them, until theyare so far apart that you no longer feel the en-ergy. Then slowly bring your hands together andsee what happens as they get closer. It might feel likethe space between your hands gets denser as the energy con-centrates when your hands come closer together. The energy betweenyour hands is your chi, or life energy. Chi is also all around us, avail-able for us to gather from the air, ground, and living plants.

With ChiRunning, we can gather this chi while running to help en-ergize us on long runs. I noticed I could do this while run-

ning through Stanley Park in the Vancouver halfmarathon. The trees definitely gave me energy

in a way that concrete buildings on other partsof the route did not. And we can also re-

plenish ourselves with chi at any timeduring the day, not just when we’re run-

ning. T’ai Chi teaches ways for gath-ering and working with the energyand opening the channels in ourbody to help it flow more freely. Itis subtle energy and you might notbelieve it even exists if you’venever felt it, but you are probablyalready familiar with this subtleand exquisite energy throughyour yoga practice.

I first read the ChiRunning bookabout four years ago. Practicingthe method helped me increasemy capacity from the 10K dis-

tance to the half-marathon. Previ-ously, pain where the IT band

attaches to my left knee preventedme from running long distances but

using the chi running technique, incombination with my yoga practice, I

was able to gradually and gently increasemy distance from 10K to 21.1K! The

ChiRunning method increases mental clarityand focus, enhances the joy of running, and turns

running into a safe and effective lifelong program forhealth, fitness, and well-being.

INTOLERANCEBy Dr. Melissa Bradwell, ND

Food

When most of us think of food allergies wethink of the common peanut allergy, some-times shellfish, or even gluten, which resultsin Celiac Disease. Without immediate symp-toms of anaphylaxis, hives, severe gastroin-testinal pain or shortness of breath, mostpeople often consider themselves allergy-free. While this could very well be the case, food intolerances also produce a reaction in-volving food and the immune system that af-fects up to 75% of the western population.

The Symptoms of Food Intolerance

Symptoms of food intolerance include, butare not limited to, nausea, diarrhea, abdomi-nal pain, gas, bloating, headaches, muscleand joint pain, irritability, and fatigue. Unlikefood allergies where the body produces IgEantibodies against the offending food, whichresults in an immediate reaction, food intol-erances produce IgG antibodies, and can havea more delayed reaction sometimes taking upto 72 hours to appear.

Causes of Food Intolerance

Food intolerance can be inherited and can becaused by a specific food, a protein found inthat food, or chemical ingredients added toenhance the colour or flavour of a certainfood. Reactions can also be cumulative, where only upon repetitive exposure will thebody react, or familial, in which the body re-sponds to foods from the same family. An-other scenario is the body’s lack of a certain

enzyme to aid in the digestion and absorptionof the food in question.

How are Food Intolerances Diagnosed?

Most people, when they suspect that theymay have a food intolerance, will often startby keeping a food diary to record what theyeat, and if and when they develop symptoms. If that doesn’t lead to any definitive answers, then an elimination diet may be a good nextstep. For a period of two to three weeks, allof the common food allergens are removedfrom the diet to see if symptoms resolve. Fol-lowing that, foods are re-introduced everytwo to three days, to identify any food intol-erance. For faster and accurate results, ablood test for both IgE and IgG antibodiescan be done. This test includes everythingfrom all common food allergens to very spe-cific spices and additives and has become avery popular diagnostic tool, as most peoplenot only want to know what they’re intolerantto but also what foods are optimum for them.

The Mind-Gut Connection

Epithelial cells that line the gut secrete sero-tonin, our feel-good hormone. Often thoughtof as just a neurotransmitter important formood, learning and sleep, it’s important tonote that only a small amount is produced inthe brain and that up to 95% of it is actuallymade in the gut. This clearly illustrates theconnection between the mind and the gut andwhy some people with food intolerances can

suffer from irritability, anxiety, and depres-sion.

How are Food Intolerances Treated?

Depending on the severity of the food intol-erance, one may need to avoid the problemfood for several weeks or months until the in-testines are healed and the immune system issettled. After this initial elimination, fol-lowed by a drastic reduction in the food’s in-take, most people can handle the problemfood again in small amounts or on a rotatedbasis. Digestive enzymes to improve diges-tion and absorption, and gastrointestinal sup-port to reduce inflammation, also help toalleviate and prevent future symptoms.

Preventing Food Intolerances

There can definitely be too much of a goodthing, and the key to ensuring optimal guthealth is to avoid overduing it. Implement adiet rich in variety and try new things. Knowwhat is in your food, and be sure to read la-bels. A really good resource for healthy, cleanrecipes is www.nourishingmeals.com. Thisblog is full of recipes free from gluten, dairy, and eggs, which are the top three food intol-erances. Enjoy!

Why good food may not always be good for you

1. You failed to consider how much emotional effort it would take tochange eating habits. You’re used to doing things a certain way. You’re used to certain tastes. You know how to make your favoritedishes. This new way of eating takes more emotional effort than yourealized!

2. You didn’t have a reliable method to deal with cravings. You reliedon willpower, which is, at best, temporary.

3. You didn’t really believe you could do it; after all, you have failedso many other times before at weight loss. And if you don’t really be-lieve you will be successful, why put in the effort?

4. You didn’t realize just how hard it was going to be to go withoutyour favorite foods or to eat less of them – you have no method todeal with feeling deprived or short-changed, or to deal with the feelingthat something is missing.

5. You’ve hated your body for so long, or been so used to being over-weight, that being slim just seems so strange. Who is this woman whois getting slimmer? I don’t know her! I want the old me back!

6. There may be emotional reasons why you’re carrying the extraweight. Until those hidden emotional reasons for being overweightare addressed, it will be a constant battle between emotions andwillpower. When willpower has to square off against emotion, emo-tion usually wins!

7. Eating has been your pleasure, your comfort or your treat for a longtime. And of course, when you are on a diet, you feel deprived andstressed, and the very thing you want for comfort, you can’t have! How do you find a new way to please, reward, or comfort yourself? What will that new way be? (More change to deal with – see emo-tional reason #1.)

8. You may have been using food to stuff down emotions. If you can’tuse food, you’ll have to deal with those emotions. How will you doit? If you didn’t know how before, are you expecting yourself to sud-denly know how to handle unpleasant emotions (the ones you usedto stuff down with food)?

9. Rebellion - You tried to force a change on yourself. For severaldays you followed your diet, did all the things you should, and a fewdays later it’s as if another part of you woke up and took over! Youfind yourself automatically eating all things you shouldn’t, as if youhad never been on the diet. Parts of you have not bought into the ideathat you should eat less, deprive yourself, and put in the effort tochange how much and what you eat. One part of you is fighting an-other part of you!

With this much emotional turmoil, it’s easy to forget why you wantedto lose weight and just give in! The sheer immensity of the emotionoverwhelms your valid reasons for losing weight. And if you were acomfort eater, when you give in to the above emotions, you’ll eat tocomfort yourself and then kick yourself for not following your diet.

To succeed at weight loss you’ll need to address these nine hiddenpsychological triggers that prevent your weight loss efforts from suc-ceeding. Without addressing these hidden triggers, you’ll only be set-ting yourself up for yo-yo weight gain and loss.

Summer Programs at BC Wilderness Visions

“By the time you step out of your purpose circle into the broad day-

light, something has happened, whether you know it or not.”

-Steven Foster and Meredith Little

A teenager is about to be released from a minimum-security youthprison and has a chance to make a new start. A stay-at-home momcontemplates returning to the work force now that all her children arein school, but is unsure about whether she is ready. A business exec-utive in upper management feels dissatisfied, despite prestige and fi-nancial success, and wonders whether some other work would bemore fulfilling. What do these three people have in common? Theyare each at a time of potential transition and wonder what directionto go in.

The vision fast is a cross-cultural ceremony that brings guidance andhealing through solo time in wild nature. Humans around the worldhave gone alone into the wilderness throughout time, seeking vision, guidance, and connection to the greater mystery. The vision fast jour-ney is a very personal one and its meaning will be unique to you. Tra-ditionally, the vision fast is a rite of passage that marks an importanttransition in life, such as the adolescent passage into adulthood. Thevision fast can be used for contemplation and celebration of life atany time of change.

Today, precious time alone in wild nature is rare and can answer aninner longing for something that seems to be missing. Modern womenand men lead such busy lives that there is little time for contempla-tion. People are often drawn to the vision fast to take this time forcontemplation or to renew their connection to self, to the earth, andto the sacred dimension in life. People are also drawn to this ceremonywhen there is an area of life that they want to spend some time heal-ing, such as a distressing event or a relationship. Other times, theyexperience the calling of an inner quality of self that they wish to cul-tivate and invite to participate more fully in their life. Always, a long-ing in our heart is what calls us to undertake this journey.

The School of Lost Borders has developed a form of the vision fastfor modern people. The week-long vision fast ceremony begins with

two days of preparations and clarifying intentions. Then participantsfast alone in the wilderness for three days and nights, following theancient practice of going without food, human companionship, andbuilt shelter. To adapt this ceremony to modern questers in a mountainclimate, fasters use a tarp and sleeping bag for shelter! The final twodays are spent in the group, telling and listening to stories of the fasts, integrating the solo time, and preparing to incorporate the learningsand gifts of the solo into life at home.

The basic structure of this wilderness retreat draws on elements ofrites of passage and renewal that stretch back to the beginnings ofhuman consciousness: removing ourselves from our familiar worldsand going into the wilderness; using ceremony to deepen awarenessand open our hearts; having time together in close community; havingtime alone; fasting; and returning with greater clarity and specifictasks.

Peppermint Profile

AromatherapyRecipe: Herbal salt body scrub

This invigorating herbal salt body scrub will deep-cleanse as well as toneyour entire body. I have chosen two options for your essential oils depend-ing on whether you use this in the morning or in the evening.

For an energizing and mind-awakening body scrub, use 3-4 drops of Peppermint Oil with 5 tablespoons of sea salt. Mix this together then add1/2 teaspoon of a carrier oil such as almond or grapeseed oil. Mix againthoroughly then add enough water to moisten the mixture. Apply to thebody in deep massaging movements, concentrating on those 'orange peel'areas. Be gentle on more sensitive parts. Rinse off with water. If you preferto use this body scrub in the evening or afternoon, then simply replace thePeppermint essential oil with Lavender essential oil and follow the samemethod above.

Recipe: Aromatherapy Room Mist Air Freshener

4 oz. clean spray bottle with a fine mist setting (do not use a bottle that pre-viously contained cleaning products or hair products)30-40 drops of your favorite essential oil or essential oil blend, keeping thesafety data of the chosen essential oil(s) in mind1.5 ounces of distilled water and 1.5 ounces of high-proof alcohol (vodka issuitable, isopropyl or rubbing alcohol is not). Alternatively, you may omitthe alcohol and increase the amount of distilled water to 3 ounces. The al-

cohol helps the aroma linger for a longer duration.

Example blends of essential oils that may be used:15 drops clary sage9 drops lemon6 drops lavender20 drops rosemary8 drops grapefruit4 drops peppermint2 drops spearmint 15 drops bergamot

15 drops spearmint

Directions:

Fill the spray bottle with the choice of either 1.5 ounces of distilled waterand 1.5 ounces of alcohol or 3 ounces of distilled water. (Even though a 4oz. bottle is suggested, leave about 1 oz. unfilled so you can shake the bot-tle well between uses.) Then, add 30-40 drops of essential oil. Essential oilscan vary in strength. You may want to try 20 drops at first especially if youlive in a household with someone who is sensitive to strong aromas. Shake the bottle prior to each use, and let it sit for about a day before mak-ing a conclusion that the aroma is too weak; the aroma can change after theair freshener has had time to sit. Mist lightly in the room. Be especiallycareful not to allow the air freshener mist to fall onto furniture or into openbeverages. Pay special attention to all safety information on all essentialoils that you use. This is even more important if you have any medical con-dition or are pregnant. Last but not least, do enjoy introducing aromather-

apy into your lifestyle!

From the last issue of Yoga Tree, continuing our discussion of directionality in Space

and Time:

TIME AND DIRECTION

We also give the concept of direction to time in order to understandour relationships and to explain cause and effect. The predominantunderstanding of time in our culture is a linear time where one mo-ment follows the last and we project forward and backward along alinear framework.

This is not the only way we can conceptualize time. We can also con-ceive of time from a circular perspective. When we move from livingour lives from the perception of linear time with its built in constructof cause and effect, and start seeing all things, including time withinthe perception of the circle and circular time, we step into the notionof Wholeness. This is not the way we in Western culture have beenconditioned to think but it is the way people who live their lives con-nected to the natural world think. Indigenous and Shamanic cultureseverywhere base their lives and knowledge in the pulsating rhythmof life that can be sensed all around them in nature.

In the seasonal cycles, the passages of the sun and moon, time andthought are seen within a pattern of wholeness, not an open-endedlinear journey into the unknown. The year itself is a Great Cycle withno actual ‘beginning’ or ‘ending’. Seasons, relating to the sun, andmonths, relating to the moon, keep people intimately in tune with theliving system of Gaia. Time moves in cycles of circles.

INTERCONNECTEDNESS

These observations affect how we think and how we understand ourconnection within the whole of everything. Shamanic people ob-served that there were no straight lines in nature. The sun and the themoon are round. So is the earth. The sun, moon and stars seem totrace observable circular patterns in the sky. Birds build round nests.

Animals mark round territories. Also shamans see the universe andall of nature as originating in the mental or spiritual realm and in aconstant state of change and ‘becoming’. Therefore when workingfrom a circular perspective, we are actually building a model of howthe universe and the human mind operates. The two are not only sim-ilar, they are integral. To understand the interconnectedness of allthings and to think from an integral perspective, it helps to create amodel based on a circle, a container that contains everything.

Observe your thoughts this week, tracking where you tend to thinkprimarily within a linear framework. The easiest way to track this willbe for you to look at how often you see your life from a “cause andeffect” perspective. If/when you get caught up in ‘negative self-talk,’you can be fairly sure you are in cause and effect, or linear thinking. When list-making or thinking sequentially about time you will be inlinear thinking. Make some notes for yourself on what you observeabout how predominant your linear mode of thinking is. Now observewhen you think about things from a systems or relationship perspec-tive. If you are in a creative field of work, you probably use this modeof thinking more than others might. If this is an unfamiliar processfor you, take some quiet time and exercise the right side of your brainby following a thought into a relational framework rather than a se-quential framework.

That’s it – just think and observe how you develop your thoughts.

In the next issue of Yoga Tree we will look at how the Shaman stepsoutside of space and time, exercising mankind’s greatest gift by sourc-ing from infinite possibility.

Issue #15

www.yogatreebc.com 23

In a world where we’re often judged harshly for identifying and re-vealing our needs many of us grew to fear that asking for what weneeded would only lead to disapproval and judgment. Many of ushave learned to act in dysfunctional and detrimental ways in orderto get our needs met. For instance, we may do things to get peopleto like us and avoid doing things that may lead them to dislike orpunish us. We often deny ourselves and do for others in order to gainapproval or love.

Giving up what you need or going it alone is a strategy that many ofus use and is not very satisfying. Over time this may build up andresult in confrontation and arguments that deepen the feeling of lone-liness and of being disconnected from others. Understanding yourfeelings, respecting your needs and the feelings and needs of othersis the way back to feeling connected, respected and being valued forwho you are. The way in which we communicate determines thequality of the relationships we create.

Most of us grew up speaking in a way that encourages us to label, compare, demand, and pronounce judgments rather than to be awareof what we are needing. This may leave us questioning whether thereis something wrong with whatever feelings we may be experiencing. This leads to thinking about what’s wrong with other people whenour needs aren’t being fulfilled. Judgments, criticisms, diagnoses, and interpretations of others are all expressions of our unmet needs. We have learned to be more skilled in analyzing the perceivedwrongness of others than in clearly expressing our own needs.

We have all come to the stage we are in our lives by acquiring habits. In order to have the experiences that we desire we have to learn newhabits, new ways of doing life that will support us in getting ourneeds met. When we replace our old patterns of defending, with-drawing, or attacking in the face of judgment and criticism, we cometo perceive ourselves and others, as well as our intentions and rela-tionships, in a new light, to hear our own deeper needs and those ofothers. The intimacy that we seek requires us to value other’s needs equallywith our own, not less and not more. The spiritual premise is thathuman needs are universal and shared by all: tenderness, closeness, understanding, safety, the need to be understood, to contribute, to

matter to others, to be valued. Our conflicts arise from having dif-ferent strategies to try to meet the same basic set of needs, not fromthe needs themselves. As the Sufi poet Rumi said: “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing andright-doing, there is a field, I’ll meet you there.”

If your desire is to live your life with clarity, co-operation, efficiency, connection, understanding, success, loyalty, creativity, respect, growth and depth, I invite you to join us on May 15th as we celebrateour 5th anniversary in Kamloops by offering a workshop called“Communicating in Relationships”. Are You Getting Your Needs Met?By Rev. Connie Phelps, Centre for Spiritual Living Kamloops

Mini-Meditation:

Show Up and Let Go

Sit beautifully; be comfortable and light.Open to your breath and feel your awareness expand.Draw all of your attention to this moment, right here, right now. This is where the magic is!

Simply sit and breathe.Feel the blessing of your breath as it nourishes your entire being with prana.

Every time your mind tries to wander off and follow thoughts, let them dissolve. The breath is all you need. This moment is all you need. It is transformative.

Show up, again and again. Be here now.Let go, again and again. Let it flow.

Show up.Let go.

Show up.Let go.

And through this profoundly simple process, Notice yourself diving deep into the truth of who you are:Unconditional love and peace.

I am currently in a time of big transition, how about you? Have you no-

ticed that one of the constants in life is change? We all deal with it dif-

ferently. It can be either scary or exhilarating depending on our

perspective. Are we looking through the eyes of fear or love? There are

consequences that come with each view. In my experience, love leads

to freedom and joy, and fear to a prison of my own making. Perhaps

everything is always perfect, and the arrival of chaos in our lives is ac-

tually an opportunity on a quantum level. It’s a chance to move up or

down in our level of coherence, if we approach it deliberately.

I am a wellness consultant, and the most powerful tool I utilize is the

Resonance Repatterning System. It’s a highly effective way to shift en-

ergy and resonate with intentions instead of problems. It gives you a

method for identifying and changing your resonance, which in turn

changes how you experience life. Self-healing and positive change are

possible when the frequencies of our body, emotions and mind are co-

herent. The more coherent we become within ourselves, the more we in-

teract through resonance with the unified field of infinite possibilities.

I have found gratitude an important ally in times of difficulty, as it seems

to create Grace. It’s a fabulous loop, with appreciation of Grace creating

more happiness and gratitude, and on it goes. What is Grace? It can be

enjoying a simple, beautiful flow in one’s life, with abundance of sup-

port coming naturally, and the synchronicity of being in the right place

at the right time, because of listening to one’s heart.

It has helped me keep up to the transitions in my life. Our beautiful heal-

ing centre, The Lodge Inn Retreat in Cherryville BC has been sold, and

my husband is no longer my business or marriage partner (just my

friend). Yet, here I am feeling grateful for all the unexpected changes that

have occurred. They have brought me into alignment with my purpose

and highest intention, with the ability to offer unconditional, universal

service, and extend my availability to individuals and groups all over BC

and Alberta. Following the energy to my new future and planting seeds,

I starting out by travelling and exploring new friendships and connections

made at the two Extraordinary Wellness Festivals I organized at our Re-

treat, I have ended up as the “Roving Repatterner” and have started a

Facebook group for clients and friends!

Along the way the city that impressed me the most was Kamloops. I con-

sistently loved the interesting, friendly people here, and felt more wel-

comed and comfortable with each visit. I found a nomadic oasis at Mystic

Dreams, with lovely Flo and her staff, where I am offering monthly ses-

sions, and have discovered the wonderful scenes at Let’s Move and The

Art We Are. The best part is the new friendships with like-minded people.

I am looking forward to being part of the Let’s Move Wellness festival

in June, and am organizing a holistic practitioner gathering in the fall.

Kamloops is my new home base in this exciting time of transition, and I

hope to see you around the Loops!

SELF-HEALING & PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

• Rebalance your entire energy system• Cleanse and energize all key organs• Boost the immune and endocrine system• Release negativity and set new patterns• Clear mental clutter and release creativity• Break through barriers that block life

REIKI is a simple, safe, non-invasive and comforting self-healing toolthat is available any time a practitioner consciously intends healing –mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Level 1 Reiki train-ing allows the practitioner to initiate hands-on healing for self andothers, without needing prior knowledge of medicine or anatomyWhile we are naturally gifted by nature to use our energy and inten-tions for healing purposes, an “attuned” Reiki practitioner goesthrough an energetic alignment administered by a Certified ReikiMaster. The energetic system of the one being attuned is opened upto handle a greater flow of energy channeled through their body. Thisallows access to the universal life force available to support healing.Reiki can never be applied to cause harm – Reiki follows only thehighest pathway. Reiki can be used to soothe trauma and stress, blockinjuries from settling deep into the tissues, dissolve the root of anissue, create empowering awareness for change, and boost self-con-fidence. The hands are used to connect this energy between giver andreceiver. Reiki works with nature by establishing innate internal bal-ance to support the natural self-healing intelligence of the body.Reiki’s benefits are in its ease of use, purity and potency.

Fly like an Eagle Issue #15

www.yogatreebc.com 25

We are in the most delightful time of year, when the light shines uponour land and the earth is bursting with fertility and beauty. The ancientteachings say that we are children of the light and that we only existupon this planet because of the beautiful sun that shines upon us. Thissun nurtures the seeds we plant in our gardens, which become the veg-etables, fruit, grains, and corn that feed our bodies. When we eat thisfood, we are ingesting the light that has been absorbed into the seedsand plants, thus we are children of the light. The concept of being chil-dren of the light creates a vision for me of streams of light flowingthrough our bodies sustaining us through our life journey. A river needs to be free of log jams and dams, so that it can flow easily. The rivers of light in our bodies also need to be free of log jams, suchas doubt, worry, and stress, so our life force can flow easily throughour bodies. Yoga is one way to sustain these rivers of light and maintainthe flow in our bodies through the postures and breath.

In the path of the medicine wheel, the archetype for the east as the landof the rising sun is the Eagle. The vision of an Eagle soaring above al-ways fills me with hope and wonder. As the Eagle flies she views theworld from a different perceptual state. Similarily, in the teachings wecan ask to fly with the eagle high above and find a new perspective forour world. Many times we get bogged down in our lives, worryingabout the next task, or concerned for our family and friends. We canbecome caught up in the mundane tasks that demand our attention. Theidea of aligning with Eagle energy can be very beneficial.

This spring take some time to soar like an Eagle and see your worldfrom a different perceptual state, so as to to receive clarity and wisdom. One way to see your world from a different vantage point is to noticethe gifts you brought into this life that are unique to you. Your gift maybe your sense of humor, your honesty, compassion for others, or anability to organize events. I suggest you make a list of your gifts. Weare quick to be judgmental of ourselves, and the critical voice can bevery pervasive, but this is an opportunity to see ourselves from a higherperspective. Imagine you are your own best friend and allow yourselfthe opportunity to see your strengths. Be kind to yourself as you extri-cate your innate gifts. Write these discoveries down and put them whereyou will be reminded of who you are from a different point of view. When we reach for our highest potential we can attain it, but givingourselves a boost to fly with the Eagles aligns us with the highest light, love and truth for self. So this spring when you see an Eagle or Hawk, remember to ask them for support and soar with the Eagles to yourhighest potential.

Would you put second grade oil in your vehicle and expect it to runat its optimal performance?

Then why do we feed our bodies with junk foods that make us feelless than vibrant? The SAD (standard American diet) is the numberone contributor to many of our illnesses today and still we choose tomake food choices that do not support our health and well being.

The raw food movement has opened many people up to the possibilityof how to lose weight, feel great and heal their bodies in order to bethe best they can be. Raw and living foods - fruits, vegetables, seedsand nuts - are foods not heated above 108ºC, which allows for all liv-ing enzymes and nutrients to be present making it easier for our bodiesto digest. By incorporating more of these foods into our everydaydiet we lessen the stress on our bodies and so we in turn have moreenergy to do the things we love to do.

Many wonder if life will become a blur of eating carrot sticks andbroccoli, but those who have lived the lifestyle know that there areso many wonderful recipes that can be created that imitate our cookedfood counterparts but that are truly good for us, such as coconut creampie, lasagna, pizza, banana cream pie, apple pie, wraps and so muchmore.

How do you start? By leaning into the process. Swap out your regularcereal and toast breakfast with a green smoothie packed full of nutri-ents to feed your body.

Green Smoothie Recipe:

2 cups spinach4 bananasFiltered waterFruit of your choice – frozen for a thicker shake – blueberries, pineap-ple, raspberries3 Medjool dates

Spinach is a great source of iron and protein, bananas contain highdoes of potassium and medjool dates aid in digestion.

Kamloops’ FREE Yoga & Wellness Magazine

Crystal Bowl Meditations are happening in Kamloops on the Fridayand Saturday evenings closest to the Full and New Moons eachmonth. In the comfort of my home, I play the 7 different chakra bowlsin a variety of combinations.

These singing crystal bowls are played singularly and in harmonizingcombinations, two or more at a time. Momentary dissonance is useddeliberately to break up blocked energy. The bowls are tuned to thevarious notes of the musical scale, corresponding to the chakras (en-ergy centers) of the body. These therapeutic tones are meant to en-hance the wellness of the participant. The sound of the bowlsincreases the alpha, theta and delta brainwaves, inducing relaxationof the body, mind and soul.

The tibetan bowls, bells and a wind gong are also sometimes wovenin to the soundscape. My intent for those who are present is to bringabout an effect of opening and releasing in the body and the energyfields.

For the one and a half hour experience, participants are seated com-fortably and the room is filled with the powerful droning sound of thebowls. It is a private and personal time, where music lovers find theharmonies exquisite and transforming, and sound lovers find the op-portunity to release held energy and relax deeply. Here, paranormalexperiences and ordinary reality gently co-exist.

In winter, there is a fire crackling in the fireplace, while in warmermonths we gather with the bowls on the Golden Mean deck in thebackyard. Afterward, I serve tea and we come out of the meditationslowly before going back out into the world.

There is lots of parking on the street and admission is $10.00For further details call Terez at 778-471-5598 or email [email protected] Laforge is a bodytalker and a cranial sacral reflexologist. She is a lifelong in-

corrigible explorer of healing modalities and the mysteries of life.

Crystal Bowl MeditationOne of the ways that yoga can be seen as a spiritual practice is

expressed in the greeting “Namaste”. This Sanskrit word im-plies a recognition of another as a reflection of oneself, of thesame divine light of which we are all a manifestation. Yoga isthe Sanskrit word that is the root of our English word “yoke” -as in “join together” (like the yoke for oxen.) It implies oneness,or non-duality. It is the ancient realization of what modern med-icine is beginning to understand and modern science is begin-ning to prove, which is that everything is connected, nothing isseparate from the one energy field. Several books have comeout recently that report the scientific evidence for this. One iscalled “Science and the Akashic Field”, by Laszlo. Another issimply called “The Field”, by Lynne McTaggert.

The Namaste gesture (palms together in front of the heart,prayer-like) is a traditional expression of this realization of non-duality, or oneness, or “yoga”. The gesture brings together theleft and right sides of the body, as well as the mind and thebreath. In Sanskrit, the same word citta means both mind andheart. Namaste as a greeting recognizes our essential intercon-nectedness. It connects our inner and outer experience in an ex-pression of this attitude of spiritual respect, appreciation, harmony and peacefulness.

May I offer a simple experiment that you could do with a will-ing partner? Stand facing each other, hands and arms hangingat your sides. Close your eyes for a moment and simply andquietly notice your experience. Open your eyes when you’reready and look at your partner for a moment. Close your eyesagain and notice what’s happening for you. What bodymind ex-perience are you having? When you’re ready, place your handspalm together in the Namaste gesture. Slowly open your eyesonce more and again look at your partner. Simply notice any-thing that seems to happen differently within your bodymindexperience. Then, close your eyes for a few moments longer tostay with your experience before you talk about it together.

Intuition is defined as being adirect knowledge or awarenessof something without consciousattention or reasoning, and anonintellectual perception or ap-prehension.

As human beings, intuition is acapacity we are born with, likethe capacity for language orthinking or appreciating music. It is not a power we acquire, butrather if is an integral part ofevery human mental, emotionaland physical process. Relyingon intuition means operatingwithout the safety net of logic, common sense and sensory ex-perience. This way, much oflife becomes about uncoveringwhat we already know.

Quote by Laura Day, Practical Intu-

ition: “Intuition is a internal

mechanism that aids you in any

and all of your decision -mak-

ing. We call it a gut feeling, an

instinct, a sense of something

that tells you to go in one direc-

tion or another.”

When you use your intuition ef-fectively you bring the uncon-scious data to a place whereyour conscious mind can inter-pret.

We make decisions based onour intuition, which creates ourday to day reality. When we re-ceive information intuitively wemay think we are making it upor pretending. This skill of pre-tending we used as children is avery valid skill. As an example:We find the perfect car. Wethink of it, we pretend we al-ready own it, we pretend thatwe are driving it, we imaginehow it will look parked in frontof our home. If this is what wereally want, guess what: beforewe know it we own it!

Powerful stuff! We all possess this wonderfulgift of intuition. Let’s take backour personal power and enjoythe journey.

Workplace YogaBy Lynn Roberts

Healthy Workplace PoseBENEFITS

Strengthens standing leg, tones abdominal muscles,

buttocks, legs, back and arms, lengthens spine, im-

proves balance, burns calories, improves posture, in-

creases energy and more.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1: Remove your socks and shoes if possible.

Stand in Mountain Pose for a moment, with your

feet hip distance apart, feet parallel to each other.

Stand away from your chair and desk. Contract your

abdominal muscles, lift your chest up and relax your

shoulders back and down. Be tall and lifted. Turn

your palms to face forward, drawing your shoulders

back a bit more. Close your eyes.

Step 2: Open your eyes and find a focal point. Shift

your weight into your right foot and contract your

abdominal muscles. As you inhale, sweep your arms

up to the ceiling, reaching straight overhead, palms

facing each other. As you exhale, lift your left toes

off the floor behind you slightly. Start to tilt slightly

forward, keeping your spine straight. Allow your

focal point to shift to the floor as necessary. Soften

your right knee slightly so that you don't "lock" it.

Step 3: Stay here if this is enough for you. Other-

wise, lift your left leg higher up, and hinge forward

more from your hips, bringing your body parallel to

the floor. To keep your hips level, internally rotate

your left thigh toward the ground.

That is the theme of the International Confederation of Midwives - atruism already obvious to a growing number of Canadian motherswho have chosen the empowering route of pregnancy and birth at-tended by a midwife. Study after study within Canada and worldwidedemonstrates healthier, happier, cost effective outcomes when a mid-wife is engaged with the parents’ journey from conception to birth.

Midwives are not new, but neither is pregnancy and parenthood. Worldwide, 80% of babies are born with midwives. During the lastcentury in the western world, advances in science and technologyhave led to high-tech medical systems that allow us to care for oursick and injured better than ever. Unfortunately, birth has also becomea medical procedure. The “normal” model of birth now takes placein a hospital setting, where upwards of one in three women in NorthAmerica have their babies surgically removed. The World Health Or-ganization recommends a C-section rate no higher than 10 to 15%,yet in Canada and the US, the rate continues to remain near and insome areas higher than 30%! You might say we as a society preparedfor every possible outcome – except, perhaps, a normal, natural, em-powered birth by a healthy, well prepared mother supported by herpartner, friends and family.

Here in BC, the University of British Columbia Midwifery EducationProgram, under the Faulty of Medicine, graduates 10 -12 new highlytrained midwives each year. The modern midwife is a medical pro-fessional with a personal approach, ready and able to assist moms andbabies through pregnancy, labour and birth without unnecessary in-tervention and in her choice of birthplace: home or hospital. Midwivesoffer an informed choice model of care that is publicly funded,woman-centered and family based.

Midwives work both in the hospital and in the community; they aretrained to work independently as well as collaboratively, consultingwith specialists when needed. Dr. Katherine Camacho Carr, CNM,PhD, president of the American College of Nurse Midwives, de-scribed the reasons behind the efficacy of the modern midwife: "Thesecret to success for midwives is their commitment to providing highquality care while continuously listening to women. In our current,fast-paced, high-tech, money-driven health care system, women aremore anxious than ever to build a relationship with a health care pro-fessional they can trust.” The commitment midwives make towomen's health is rewarded by health outcomes that consistently meetor exceed maternity care standards of patient safety and satisfaction.

May 5th is the International Day of the Midwife; a day that was des-ignated in 1991 by the International Confederation of Midwives, andcelebrated annually around the world, remembering and honouringthe work of midwives! So, whether you are a mom, dad, or parents-to-be, hug a midwife, or at least talk to one! We are ready to workwith you toward a healthier happier birth.

Mighty Oak Midwifery is pleased to provide midwifery services to the women andfamilies of Kamloops and surrounding areas. We are accepting new clients now. Seewww.mightyoakmidwifery.ca for more information.

"Cognitive Behavioural therapy is now reasonably well accepted,

and so, too, is psychotherapy, but of the three, I would say Hypno-

tism is potentially the most powerful." -Professor Peter Whorwell, University Hospital of South Manchester

Hypnosis:

A natural state of mind in which there is a heightened suggestibility,a deep state of relaxation reached by allowing yourself to be guidedinto a focused concentration. The critical conscious (logical) mind isthen side stepped for a while, allowing your subconscious mind whereall memories, emotions and experiences are stored to come to theforefront. In this state you are open to receiving positive suggestionsthat will impact your ability to achieve your goals in a positive way.You are always in control during hypnosis, you are not asleep, youare not unconscious; you are simply in a relaxed state of heightenedawareness.

Clinical Hypnotherapy:

Clinical Hypnotherapy takes hypnosis one step further by not onlygiving positive suggestions to the subconscious mind, but by holdinga dialogue with it. This dialogue allows you to reframe your subcon-scious perceptions, altering your predisposition to respond in old fa-miliar patterns to the circumstances of your life. You have anopportunity to create new, positive, beneficial perceptions whichallow you to respond to the circumstances of life in a new and moreproductive way.

Testimonials:

"Jackie was able to take me to that wonderful place of total surrender fromthe stress of my daily life. At the end of the session I felt relaxed, empowered, and ready to move forward. Isn't that where we should be when we want to

totally enjoy what we have and create what we want? " ~ C.S.M.

“I was haunted by a traumatic incident in my life. I found myself thrown intothe re-experiencing of that incident several times a day everyday for over 15years. With Jackie’s skillful use of hypnotherapy I was able to free myselffrom the past and move on in my life. This is the most wonderful release, tonever again experience a past that controlled every aspect of my life. I so ap-preciate all that Jackie has done for me and that she accepts me for who I am

today.” ~ Al W.

There is something in the air, other then spring. It is a beautiful vi-bration and I can feel it getting stronger. This positive energy thatfills my heart is contagious, and I can pass it on to everyone aroundme that is open to it. I am meeting more and more people who seemto resonate with this energy. It is very exciting.

Health and wellness are all about energy. Imagine what you could dofor yourself if you had the tools to tap into that energy! And thesetools are available to aid in to creating a major shift in conscious-ness.

I do not belief in coincidences, but rather that every incident and everyencounter happens for a reason. For me it was all the right books, theright people, workshops, and amazing technology showing up at theright time in my life that has gotten me to where I am now. I facilitateself-healing, and transformation to health. My training as a physio-therapist is a foundation for physical support, and is one of the healingtools that I offer individual clients and groups.

For the mental, emotional and spiritual support there are numeroustools available. PSYCH-K is used to change limiting subconsciousbeliefs. EIP or Emotional Interference Patterns, is a method for re-leasing emotions from the body. Then there is the amazing newAmwand, infused with source energy. Source energy reminds ourcells of the healthy blueprint and facilitates self-healing. Variousbiofeedback techniques can help reduce stress, and support theparasympathetic nervous system for the healing and rebuilding ofcells. Heart coherence is a method for supporting healthy emotions,as emotions like guilt, anger, and fear can cause havoc in the body.Nutritional support is available to provide the building blocks. Thenthere is yoga, meditation, Ai Chi, Watsu, far infra red saunas, breaththerapy and so much more to choose from. Making healthier choicesis much easier with all these options.

When I read the Yoga Tree I know that we are all on the same trackhere, all using healing energy, creating awareness, and changing con-sciousness. It is so promising to see so many people contributing tothe health and wellness community, and I feel grateful to be a part ofthat. I want to thank you all for your wonderful work, wisdom andsupport. Thank you Yoga Tree for all the great work!

Shifting Consciousness, it’s Happening

Having been given the opportunity to contribute an article to YogaTree Magazine, I ask myself what I would like to share with thediverse readers of a magazine that offers equally diverse informa-tion. I hear the words of a very wise woman I am privileged toknow who says, “speak about what you know.” So I will; and onething I do know is that energy work, whether called Reiki or Heal-ing Massage, is truly effective as an alternative healing therapy –I name these, as they are what I offer, but there are many others.

As the giver of a treatment and as a receiver of a treatment, I haveexperienced both the joy of assisting another and the gratitude ofbeing assisted towards a place of more ease. My decision to studythe practice of Reiki came from reading an article in which I wastold that it eases pain. What attracted me was the potential to assistin the easing of my mother’s pain due to osteoarthritis. After thefirst treatment her pain was decreased almost to the point of un-noticeable and she was able to discontinue taking pain medication. If I wasn’t a true believer before, I became one then.

But Reiki isn’t only useful for pain relief; it is a truly effectivetechnique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promoteshealing as well as easing pain. It is gentle, simple, and safe and iscomplimentary to traditional medicine. Because Reiki energycomes from the highest spiritual source, it will always create thebest results for all concerned, and that is what I trust every time Ihave the privilege of sharing it with another.

Today I have been watching the birds flutter around the feederswe have set out for them, perfectly at peace in their environment. They chirp and sing their appreciation for the warm sun, water todrink and food to eat. Why are they so happy, I wonder? I wouldguess it has a lot to do with living in harmony with nature and withlife. We humans, on the other hand, often find ourselves living indisharmony. This leads to stress, which leads to dis-ease, whichcan manifest into illness and pain. The expectations we place onourselves or have placed on us, the busi-ness of our lives, and ofcourse diet and life-style all play a role in this disharmony. Thismay sound frightening but it doesn’t have to be this way. As a nat-ural health practitioner I am keenly aware that one must strive tobecome a balanced being. For me this means I must nurtureequally my mind, body and spirit. For this very reason I chose thename Body In Balance for my practice. It is a reminder to me tomaintain a life-style that will contribute to my becoming and re-maining a harmonious being and it is my wish that I can share thiswith others.

It is my belief that along with affirmative change to the areas ofyour life that may be contributing to an unbalanced existence, youcan seek out and be greatly aided by those who offer themselvesin service to your well-being. They are Wholistic or Natural HealthPractitioners. We each have special talents, qualities and gems ofvalue to share and we were born on this planet to fulfill a purpose. That purpose, for me, is to be a natural health practitioner in serv-ice to the well-being of you who share this world with me.

Yoga in warm water has the unique ability to release tension and allowa range of stretching exercises that can not be found in land-basedyoga. Firstly you will find 88 – 93 ºF water ideal for relaxing tensemuscles; as well you will experience the buoyancy and hydrostaticpressure of the water supporting your body in all directions, makingmost standing yoga poses easier. Secondly you will find the floatingasanas allow for deep states of muscle relaxation, particularly in thespinal and lower back area. The benefits for rejuvenation of mind andbody are unlimited.

In our Woga class we start with Ai Chi to calm and focus the mindand open the body with the breath. Then learning to float we combinemany of the Hatha yoga exercises with breath, as this lends itself tothe buoyancy of water. The sides of the pool assist in some greatstretches for increasing muscle length of our limbs. From there wework inwards towards the back and abdomen as we float on a sqoodle, letting our bodies drop into the deep warm waters. Over time prac-ticing these poses in the water will lead to greater strength and stabil-ity

The mind cannot function when the body is suffering from physicaldiseases and the body is not in harmonious balance when there aremental diseases. Yoga psychology recognizes the importance of both.It prescribes exercises for both body and mind so that they may de-velop in psychophysiological equilibrium and thus produce completecooperation to manifest universal consciousness. Consciousness ismanifested according to the development of the body and the mind;the body is the shadow of the mind. Much of our healing potential isin our own hands. The reason for practicing yoga in the first place isto become more of yourself.

Recipe of the MonthBlack Eyed Peas in an Indian Curry

This wonderful soup was inspired by a recipe in 5Spices, 5 Dishes by Ruta Kahate. I love it for itsrich subtle flavours and for its ease of prepara-tion. It may be served with steamed rice or as afull bodied soup.

2 cups dried black-eyed peas, or 2 of the 15 oz. cans

2 tbsp. good oil2 cups chopped onion1 cup chopped green pepper2 tsp. ground coriander1 ¼ tsp. tumeric½ tsp. cayenne2 tsp. cumin1 large clove garlic, minced2 tsp. fresh ginger, finely grated1 28 oz. tin chopped tomatoes3-4 cups water or stock1 ½ tsp. salt or to taste1 tsp. pepper1 tsp. sugar2 cups coconut milk2 tbsp. lemon juiceChopped cilantro to garnish

If using dried peas, rinse and soak in water tocover for 8 hours. Drain and rinse again. Coverwith water and cook until soft.In large pot, sauté onion in oil, until light brown.Add garlic, ginger and green pepper. Sauté 2more minutes. Add all the spices including saltand pepper; sauté 2 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, and then stock. Cook 3 or 4 minutes and add theblack eyed peas. Turn heat down and simmerfor 10 minutes. At this point I like to mash a fewof the peas right in the pot. Add the coconut milkand simmer another 10 minutes to allow theflavours to blend. Just before serving, stir in thelemon juice and cilantro. I often add slightlysteamed cauliflower and green peas just prior toserving.

As kids we knew a lot. We knew the futureheld a remarkable adventure. We were bornknowing our passions and gifts and gravitatedeasily toward them. We knew joy in the mo-ment. Our job was to play… and it was a darngood job. There was no amount of rules, reg-ulations, “shoulds”, or 'have to's' that couldstop the dreaming, scheming, imagining anddiscovering. There were no limits to the en-thusiasm and answers for finishing the sen-tence "When I grow up…"

As kids, we believed in magic. Most every-thing seemed possible. We were certain thatone day we would time travel. Personally,I'm a little baffled that I haven't yet walkedthrough walls.

We knew to stretch like cats and we knewhow to experience happiness with our wholebody. We discovered we were good at thingswe loved – skating, drawing, climbing, build-ing, storytelling. When the world felt out ofsorts, we would seek out those activities tofind peace.

And then well intentioned grown ups got in-volved to help us participate in the grown upworld. We learned how to fit in, how to sitquietly at a desk, how to think in a linearfashion with timelines, logic, rules and struc-tures.

As a result we learned that the creative andimaginative adventurer in us was 'just play'and that it really did not have much value inthe grown up world. Yes it's true: Jumpingup in the middle of a meeting yelling "aha,"and blurting out an amazing idea that could

not be substantiated by statistics, is generallynot well received.

And so we forgot the little kid who had all theanswers and who could naturally gravitate to-wards what he or she loved. In a nutshell…we lost the spirit of "When I grow up…" andgained doubt, uncertainty, rules, fitting in,and simply stated, how not to live our dream.Darn.

But that's okay. We can rediscover that spirit.Imagine what can happen when the wisdomof the adult mind connects to the wonder andcuriosity of the child's mind… the result isnothing less than spectacular.

Okay, I admit...it gets a bit crazy. At a recentCreative Muse Group, the participants expe-rienced the 'Bea Silly' Muse. The participantsare introduced to nine muses. Muses like'Aha-phrodite' - the muse of passion, payingattention, and possibilities, 'Albert'- the museof imagination, and 'Bea Silly'. Let me tellyou about Bea Silly. She is the muse of'childlike play, laughter and dance.' Thismuse is introduced as a tool to reconnect tothe child self. Participants learn that they cancall in their Bea Silly Muse to reignite cre-ative flow, relieve stress, gain energy, connectto their passionate spirit and just plain havefun.

And so, on 'Bea Silly' night, the participantsclimbed trees, walked on stilts, played hop-scotch , hula hooped, gave piggy backs, pre-tended to be imaginary people, were sassy, silly, and hysterically funny. They remem-bered. Having re-experienced their child,

they can now bring that energy in and, be-lieve me, they do know how to use it!

But here's the crazy part. At the end of theclass, when I, their facilitator, attempted tohave the group summarize their experience, well! Little brats...they were interruptive, giggly, throwing paper balls at each other, and generally not at all capable of sitting, lis-tening and summarizing. Here's a fact: Asmuch as many teachers and caregivers wouldlove to incorporate play and imagination intoall of their teachings, it's not an easy thing tobring a group of wildly imaginative childrenback from the 'land of their right brains' to sit-ting quietly at their desks.

And here lies the 'spectacular' in connectingthe wisdom of adults and their wondrous kidspirit: I could send them home. And they, asadults, get to find their way to bring thatchild-like genius into all they do. They canadd playfulness to their written works, visu-alize their kid spirit to de-stress, incorporatefree thinking into their projects, and energizethemselves by climbing trees. I hope I getto hear that they piggy backed their co-work-ers to a meeting!

And without even noticing how it happened, one day they may notice that they are stretch-ing like cats, feeling happiness in their wholebody, and enthusiastically saying, "When Igrow up I'm going to..."

Isn't it your turn to go play? Yes, go play.
