On May 10th, just two and a half short months after kick-off, the Y

celebrated reaching the Strong Kids Campaign annual fundraising

goal.

“We are grateful to be part of a community that truly cares about

each other,” said Mel Tse, Executive Director. “Park Slope values

the programs we offer for people of all ages and work together to

ensure that these opportunities are available to everyone.”

Held in the Prospect Park YMCA gymnasium, the Victory Celebration

was filled with entertainment and recognition. The event showcased

a hip hop performance by PS 200’s Y Afterschool program; youth

guitar recital premiering their original riff; and a heartfelt testimo-

nial from a New Americans Welcome Center participant.

“I didn’t realize how diverse our programming is,” said event atten-

dee. “From physical activity to drawing and computer literacy

classes, the Y really makes it hard to not want to belong here.”

Funds raised through the Strong Kids Campaign allows the Y to pro-

vide free and subsidized programs and financial assistance to mem-

bers in need. Among the many Strong Kids Campaign supported

programs offered at the Y, we are proud to serve:

Hundreds of youth in our free of charge Y Afterschool program

located from Park Slope to Coney Island;

More than 50% of our over 900 summer day campers partici-

pate for free or on financial assistance and all of our special

needs campers participate for at least half the program cost;

More than 2,000 enrollments each year in our free of charge

literacy, language and citizenship classes through the New

Americans Welcome Center;

Hundreds of community members in need of membership finan-

cial assistance; and

Teens from all over Brooklyn in our free teen and civic leader-

ship programs all year round.
