His mother later ran three curio shops on Oahu. Gilbert Tam, a relative and a senior vice president of Bank of Hawaii, said, "He's done a lot and has been a success and, unfortunately, those of us in Hawaii just did not know the man well enough. He could be a role model for many Hawaii residents. ... He just loved his alma mater, Punahou, and was always proud of Punahou. Shortly after, he left the San Francisco corporation to launch his own real estate development operation, finally moving to Las Vegas from San Francisco in 1966. Tam had joined the San Francisco-based National Dollar Store in 1939 at age 23. In later years, he concentrated on successfully developing hundreds of acres of land in North Las Vegas. Jimmy Tehada, who defined the term "public servant" for many Kauai residents for more than three decades, died at home Saturday Jul 31, 1999 following a long battle with cancer. He was 67. Tehada was a key author of the 1972 Kauai General Plan that set the tone for preserving agricultural land on Kauai. He served on the Kauai County Planning Commission for more than a decade and the County Council from 1987 to 1994. Tehada ousted incumbent Mayor JoAnn Yukimura in the 1994 Democratic primary election, but he was defeated by Republican Maryanne Kusaka in the general election. In a prepared statement issued Monday, Kusaka praised Tehada "as a role model for those who strive to make their communities a better place for all." In 1996, he returned to the Council but did not seek re-election in 1998 because of failing health. "I visited him just a couple hours before he died, and I just kept thinking: What a loss, what a loss," said former Councilman Joe Munechika, one of Tehada's closest friends and political allies. Many political leaders still refer to the two as "The Dynamic Duo" and "The Batman and Robin" of the County Council in the late '80s and early '90s. It is generally believed that together they sponsored and passed more legislation than any pair of councilmen before or since. "We were good buddies," Munechika said yesterday. "I trusted Jimmy wholeheartedly, which is very unusual in politics. When he gave you his word, that was it, no matter how much pressure he got. "He never did anything for Jimmy Tehada. He always did things for the community. I revered him and I'm really going to miss him." Council Chairman Ron Kouchi said his clearest memory of Tehada was watching him flip through his documents for a meeting: Every sentence was highlighted. Often Tehada would stay up all night before a Council meeting studying the issues. Lihue Lawyer Mike Belles, who first met Tehada in 1975 when Belles was a deputy county attorney assigned to the Planning Commission, called Tehada "a passionate public servant" whose primary interest was land-use planning. "I think he had the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance memorized better than I did. "If you were going to take him on over an issue, you had better be very prepared," Belles added Tehada was known for his lengthy dissertations at Council meetings, usually outlining the entire history of the subject he was discussing "I often thought he should start with, "In the beginning,' just like the Bible, but if you listened he helped present things in their proper historical context in a way no one else could. Jimmy's corporate memory was invaluable to many of us," Belles said. Tehada was born in Waiahole on Oahu and graduated from Ben Parker High School (now Castle High School) in Kaneohe in 1950. An engineer with Hawaiian Telephone, he was transferred to Kauai in 1971. He retired in 1987. He is survived by his wife, Ethel; son, Ryan; daughter, Diane Andres; and three grandchildren. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.

William B. Thaanum, 89, of Honolulu, a choir director and organist for more than 20 years at St. Andrew's Cathedral, died last Saturday Mar 6, 1999. “He was a first-rate organist,” said the Rev. Kenneth Perkins, now retired, a former assistant minister at St. Andrew's. Congregations also admired his choir direction, Perkins added. “He got high marks.” Perkins recalled Thaanum as a dedicated person who lived a quiet but busy life. “We used to have a lot more weddings than they have now,” Perkins said. Born in Hilo, Thaanum worked briefly in similar capacities at churches in Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and other churches in Honolulu. He became a member of the Punahou School music faculty before World War II, teaching organ and piano. He also lectured on music at the University of Hawaii. He came to appear regularly in recital as organ soloist and as part of piano ensembles at Punahou and the Academy of Arts. One critic said a Thaanum organ recital had interesting variety: “There was dash in the Bach ‘Concerto' and ecstatic joy in ‘Christians Rejoice.' There was fervor in the Rossi ‘Ave Maria,' poetic impressionism in the Karg-Elert ‘Legend of the Mountain' and a quiet charm in the Bonnet ‘Romance.' “Thaanum's playing showed a good musicianship, an able technique and the ability to play interesting music on a difficult instrument.” While at St. Andrew's, Thaanum directed the choir in performing major religious cantatas, including “The Messiah,” “Elijah,” “The Crucifixion” and “The Redeemer.” He also directed joint efforts with choirs from more than one Episcopal church. A graduate of McKinley High School, he received a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii and a master's in sacred music from Union Theological Seminary. He also attended the Curtis Institute for Music on a scholarship. He is survived by a cousin, Virginia Merritt. Private services.

Spencer W. Tinker, former director of the Waikiki Aquarium and zoologist, teacher and writer, died yesterday Apr 9, 1999 in Maunalani Nursing Center. He was 90. That he had a fish named for him symbolizes his impact in marine research. "The Tinker's butterfly fish was named in his honor," said Bruce Carlson, present Waikiki Aquarium director. "It's a very strikingly beautiful butterfly fish and highly valued. It's found here in the Hawaiian Islands, but it's found in other Pacific Islands too, but only in deepwater. "An era has passed," Carlson said. "It's very interesting that the aquarium has just celebrated its 95th anniversary, and Spencer Tinker was the director a good third of that period. He was real instrumental in building the present Waikiki Aquarium." The aquarium was constructed in 1954 and opened in 1955. Before that, Tinker had been director of the old aquarium that opened in 1904, also in Kapiolani Park, Carlson said. Born in Anamoose, N.D., Tinker graduated from the University of Washington in 1931 and came to the University of Hawaii in 1932 as a teaching fellow in the zoology department. In 1934 he received a master's in zoology and remained at UH, serving as an instructor for one year in zoology and five years in education. He became director of the Waikiki Aquarium in 1940, later serving in the Army quartermaster corps from 1941 to 1946, rising to the rank of captain. An author, his works included "Animals of Hawaii," 1938 and 1941 editions; "Stories of Hawaiian Animals for Boys and Girls," 1940; "Hawaiian Fishes," 1944; "Pacific Sea Shells," 1952 and 1958 editions; "Pacific Crustacea," 1965; "Sharks and Rays of Hawaii," 1972; "Fishes of Hawaii," 1978 - the definitive work on Hawaii fish species; and "Whales of the World," 1988.
