Thermal Features in Yellowstone National Park
or “dry geysers”, are holes in the ground that release water vapor and other gases. The smell of rotten eggs comes from the sulfuric acid in the steam.
Fumaroles
also called thermal pool, contained an array of colors depending upon water temperature, mineral or algae content, and absorption of light.
Hot Spring
hot water mixes with clay and other minerals. In the spring and fall the pots are thin and soupy; the mud bubbles and boils. In late summer they thicken and have been known to hurl hot mud 10 to 15 feet high.
Mud Pot
are hot springs that periodically erupt, shooting scalding water and steam into the air.

At 122-140oF Whirligig’s run off channel is hot enough to burn you. Thermophiles living here use iron as energy. These chemical users are called “Chemotrophs”
Thermophiles algae, including Cyanidium, inhibit the green channel. They use light as energy (photosynthesize). These “Phototrophs” live where temperature range from 100-103oF
