Step 1:
Set up four test tubes in a test tube rack.

Step 2:
Place a sticker on each test tube.

Step 3:
Label each test tube with a number (1 - 4).

Measure 10 mL of warm water from beaker using graduated cylinder.

Step 4:

Remember, read the bottom of the
meniscus (curved upper surface of a
liquid in a tube) to find the volume.

Add the 10 mL of warm water to each of the 4 labeled test tubes!

Step 5:
Add one mini-cup of dry yeast to each of the four test tubes. (1 cup = 1 test tube)

Step 6:Sugar Packet

Add one packet of sugar to test tube 1 and one packet of sugar to test tube 2.
Do NOT add sugar to test tube 3 or test tube 4!

Cover the opening of each test tube with a balloon to trap any gas. This can either be done by one or two people. (see examples above)

Hold your thumb over the end of each test tube and shake it vigorously until the contents are completely mixed.

Step 9 Step 10: Remember to
write down all observations and
make detailed sketches in your Science Journal!
Return test tubes to the rack and record initial observations in your Science Journal.
Then, every 5 minutes observe and record any changes. Include additional sketches and written observations.
