Superlative – the most, the least…In English these constructions are usually followed by the

preposition IN.In Italian it is expressed by the preposition DI. If followed by

a definite article it combines to form the articulated prepositions – del, dello, dell’, della, dei, degli, delle.

Examples:• Il Duomo a Milano e` la chiesa gotica piu` grande del

mondo.• The Duomo in Milano is the biggest gothic church in the

world.

The absolute superlative = absolutely the most, very.

• Is formed by dropping the final vowel of the masculine singular form of the adjective and adding –issimo,-issima, -issimi, -issime. The absolute superlative form always agrees in gender and number with noun it describes.

• Adjective: Bello – bellissimo, bellissima, bellissimi, bellissime.
