Year 6 Remote Learning Pack
Welcome from Mrs Kenny and Miss Davies!
Hi year six! I hope all is well with you all and that you have had a wonderful weekend! Let’s
get started with the week! Please do continue to upload work onto dojo (unless you are
back in school of course!) for us to look at and reflect where necessary if we suggest it.
Please also continue to share your memories, song and ‘remote leavers’ ideas with us on
dojo and let your voice be heard!
As always, anything in the revision booklets are split into expected standard and higher
score as usual, some of the other activities are split into your usual orange, green and blue
for different levels of difficulty, just like in class.
Happiness is not something that’s ready-made; it comes from your
own actions – Dalai Lama.
You will also find this information on our website where you will then be able to download it
if you wish to alongside a list of useful links. Please also don’t forget to use
[email protected] if you need support in any way and keep sending us work on
dojo!
Whole School Weekly Challenge
Cut out hearts using different coloured paper if you have it. On every heart write a
positive message about your friends and family. Write them for your friends and family,
then cut out the hearts and post them or send them a picture of them to remind them how
special they are - remember to write one for yourself!
Week beginning: 22.06.2020

Wellbeing Idea for the Week
Keep a journal for the week!
At the end of each day, write a journal entry (you can use a notepad, paper, make a snazzy
one or just use a jotter). Log down thoughts, feelings, things you have done that day,
achievements, things you want to accomplish the following day, week, month or even year.
You could write down worries, thoughts that are holding you back, thoughts that are
driving you forward…. absolutely anything! Keeping a log if these things can help to
declutter your mind, focus your thinking and let go of negative vibes! You don’t need to
share these with us (unless you want to of course); they are your personal thoughts and
reflections. See how you feel at the end of the week and if it has helped, keep it going as
long as you like!
Joke of the Week
This week’s joke of the week is brought to you by the one and only Caleb as part of
his dojo rewards! It is also one of my personal favourites. Enjoy!
What do you do if you see a
spaceman?
Park in it man!

Day 1 Maths – Co-ordinates
We are going to complete learning on coordinates this week. There are quizzes and videos to help you so be
sure to have a device that allows you access to the internet!
First of all, I would like you to complete this short quiz to assess your knowledge of coordinates (you make want
to make a few notes on the answers when you have completed it.
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-describe-coordinate-positions-on-a-grid/activities/1/view/
Watch this video for the
model!

academy/lessons/to-
describe-coordinate-
positions-on-a-
grid/activities/2/
To find out and write coordinates we go along the horizontal axis first, then the vertical
axis (remember, along the corridor, up the stairs.
e.g. Point A is (-7, 5). Pay attention to whether it is in the negative or positive axis!

Day 1 English – Fact and opinion
Task: Look at the following statements and tick whether they are a fact or opinion
Fact Opinion
1. The car was blue.
2. The man had lost his coat.
3. Leicester City are the best football club in the world.
4. It’s not a very good television programme.
5. I believe he can win.
6. We think Mark stole the car.
7. I didn’t have a coat.
8. The weatherman thinks it is going to rain.
9. The church is the tallest building in the town.
10. You might get wet if you forget your coat.
11. The world is round.
12. I think she’s nice.
A FACT is a piece of
information that is TRUE.
It cannot be argued or
disagreed with, e.g.
Lions are big cats
Today is Monday
An opinion is somebody’s view on
something. It is not necessarily
true and can be argued or
disagreed with’ e.g.
Chocolate orange is the most
delicious chocolate
Mrs Kenny’s jokes are really
hilarious

1. Write 2 facts about a pop group.
2. Write 2 opinions about a pop group.
3. Write 2 facts about school.
4. Write 2 opinions about school.
5. Write 2 facts about food.

Read through the passages below. Underline the sentences you think are facts in one colour.
Underline the sentences you think are opinions in a different colour.
“This has to be the most exciting game of football that I’ve ever seen so far. David Beckham is easily
the best player on the pitch. He has scored 5 goals so far this season. I think he’ll score a lot more.”
Tomorrow is an important day for the pop group , BoysRUs. They release their third single tomorrow.
Their last 2 singles have gone straight into the charts at number 1. This new single, however, is an
awful mix of pop and blues music. It’s not as good as the previous 2 hits. It certainly looks to me like
BoysRUs should ask for their day job back at the toyshop.
Buy the new Superclean bathroom cleaner. It’ll leave your bathroom sparking clean! Superclean uses a
mixture of soap and bleach which attacks dust and grime. You won’t be able to believe your eyes when
you see what Superclean can do for you. Only £1.99 a bottle.

Let’s refresh our timeline work. I would like you to create a Mayan timeline. The information you
need to use can be found at the following link
https://www.ducksters.com/history/maya/maya_civilization_timeline.php. You will see that the
information is split up into four sections of history: Pre-classic period, classic period, post classic
period and colonial period. You can either:
Choose a period (or more than one!) and create a timeline for it on paper. Remember to detail
each section in chronical (time) order.
Use a digital timeline creator such as
http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/timeline_2/ (we have used this
one in class but if you have another you prefer, no problem!) You can chose one period or
create several if you like!)
Get creative (and practise your maths skills) and make a potty timeline in the living room or
garden (now the loo roll shortage seems to have sorted itself out!). Remember that one sheet
of loo roll represents a century (100 years) so you will need to space out your labels correctly.
Here is a photograph to remind you of what the potty timeline looks like.
If you are creating a larger timeline that includes more than one Mayan period then pay attention to
how the chronology works as you will be going from BCE (before common era or BC – before the year
‘zero’) to CE (common era or AD, anything after the year ‘zero’). So you will be dealing with negative
and positive integers. An example is below to show you how to work backwards or forwards from
zero.

Today we are going to look at translating shapes using coordinates.
First, review yesterday’s learning by completing this quiz -
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-translate-simple-
shapes/activities/1/view/
Now, watch the video lesson here - https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-translate-
simple-shapes/activities/2/
Example 2:
Now, have a go at the following questions on the next page (start with orange and work your
way through, challenge yourself!
Day 2 Maths – Translating shapes
A translation is the movement of a point from
one place to another. It is not reflected or
rotated, simply moved left to right, as a point
or group of points to form a shape. Look at
cross A on the grid. It is on the coordinates
(3,3). To work out the translation we count
how many squares across to the left/right and
then up/down. So in this case, the cross has
moved three squares left, then two squares
up. So to describe the translation we say:
3 right, 2 up to the new coordinates (6,5)
A
To translate a whole shape, label each point
with a letter first to help.
So…point A is translated 4 right and 2
down so plot this point at its new
coordinates
Do the same with each other point (the
translation of each will be exactly the
same, 4 right and 2 down).
Join the points together to make the
same shape.

Day 2 English – instructional writing
This week we will be creating a newspaper report. To begin with, we need to understand and identify
the features! Using the success criteria and the exampled models, find and record the features in
the newspaper article!
Feature Example
Headline Short, bold snappy sentence that introduces the article
The 5 w’s The who, what, why, where and when of an article. These should
be found in the first paragraph
Adverbials of time Tell us when a verb is being done e.g. Once the police had
cordoned off the area…
Formal connectives Aids cohesion within a sentence and keeps the writing formal
e.g. moreover
Quotes A direct piece of speech by a witness/bystander etc. This will
have to be in speech marks!
Facts and opinions Use the work you did yesterday on the difference between
facts and opinions to help you locate this evidence
Evidence sheet – Record the examples from the text on the next page:

Understanding different geographical features and how civilisations used the natural resources and
landscape to their advantage. Watch the following video on the Maya that lived/live in the Lacandon
Forest in the state of Chiapas (East Mexico). https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zdrd2hv .
Then research and make notes on the following questions (this can be on paper or electronically if you
wish to include images etc):
1. How did/do the people of the Lacandon forest use the natural resources to provide
a) Food b) shelter c) water
Go into detail with this question please, explain what they use and how they use it.
2. Why do the Maya that live in the forest not need a great deal of money?
3. How does the way the Maya in the Lacandon forest live compare to how we live? You can do
this in a comparison table if you wish.
4. How does the way the Maya in the Lacandon forest live promote sustainability (avoiding the
diminishing of natural resources)?
5. Would you like to live life this way? Why/why not?

Day 3 English – instriuctional texts
Today, you will be planning a newspaper report! First task is to think of an idea to report! It can be
as wacky as you like! Here are some ideas: Alien spaceship landing; A new potion that makes you fly;
Pet cat chases off burglar; Real life Hogwarts school discovered. You may also want to write about
current events, such as the Space x Dragon launch.
Once you have mind mapped a few ideas, complete the planning sheet template (I have included
examples in each one to help you/remind you of the features.

You’ve created body and junk percussion; now it’s time to create different pitches and notes using a
water xylophone!
If you haven’t yet seen Mr Bromfield’s video on dojo’s school story check this out now! I think it
would be a great idea to create your own music using glasses, bottles or jars filled with different
amounts of water to create different notes and pitch.
Mr Bromfield plays ‘come on hear the noise’ by Slade. Here’s the link to school story but you can
access this from your usual dojo account anyway
https://teach.classdojo.com/#/schools/53a2c76790a4dca227003e8e/story
Which song will you create? Have a listen to a few tunes in your house or on youtube (nothing
inappropriate please!) and get performing! Make sure you ask an adult for the glasses (you will need
to listen to the tune carefully to figure out how many glasses you will need) so you aren’t using Mum
or Dad’s best crystal! Use a pencil or something similar as a beater to TAP (not hit hard) the glasses
and listen to the note it makes. You may need to add and take out water to get the correct ‘note’.
Have fun experimenting and if you send them into us we can set up a little ‘name that tune’ where we
have to guess each other’s tune! Extra dojos for correct answers!
TIP – You can use jars or bottles if you like, it doesn’t have to be glasses. If you have milk delieverd
in glass bottles, empty ones of those might be ideal!

Day 4 Maths – reflections
First, let’s review yesterday’s learning with a quiz; click on this link for the questions
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-reflect-simple-shapes/activities/1/view/
Today, we will be learning how to ‘reflect’ shapes in an axis. The full lesson video can be found here
https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-reflect-simple-shapes/activities/2/ bit here is an
explanation and a model to refresh the concept of reflecting in a mirror line.
Now try the questions on the next page.
As shown in this example, a shape can
be reflected across a line of reflection,
called the mirror line. Here, you can
see that the mirror line is the ‘y’ or
horizontal axis. As it would in a mirror,
the shape is flipped so it looks like a
reflection. IMPORTANT – each point
on the reflected shape is exactly the
same distance from the mirror line
as the original shape. So the shape
looks exactly the same, only reflected.
Here is an example of a shape
reflected in the x axis, or horizontal
axis. The mirror line is the x axis
itself, so the distance between the axis
and each shape is identical.

Day 4 English – instructional writing
Using your plan from yesterday, you are going to complete your newspaper. Use the model
below to help you with this. Make it as serious or as funny as you like. You may want to look
at some examples of layouts to help you, but I have included a template (including space for a
picture). You can use the one I have provided on the next page or complete your own
electronically. I will upload both a lined and blank template on class story in case you wish to
download it and use.
Your success criteria:
Capital letters and full stops in all of the correct places!
Use a catchy headline
Include the five w’s in within the first paragraph
Use a range of adverbials of time
Use a range of formal connectives
Use quotes which include more informal language e.g. ‘It was out of this world
dude!’
Clearly distinguish between fact and opinions
Use some higher level punctuation (brackets, dashes for parenthesis, colons
and semi colons in between independent clauses.
Model
One small step for man!
Undoubtedly, the world witnessed history in the making earlier today, when the
first steps were taken – by humans – on another celestial body. In a dramatic
sequence of events, Neil Armstrong – a highly esteemed astronaut for NASA –
took his first steps out of the lunar module. Subsequently, Buzz Adrin (who is
Armstrong’s fellow space traveller) followed, as revealed by NASA’s mission
control centre.
Meanwhile, in Central Park, New York, a huge crowd amassed to witness the
historic event. One bystander commented “It was far out man! You wouldn’t
believe it unless you saw it with your own eyes. America rocks!”

Day 4 Spanish
Let’s review all things Spanish!
I have set up a Kahoot quiz about Spain at the link below. You will need to do a bit of swatting up
about Spain first (use the space below to jot things down)! You will need to look at football teams,
Spanish geography, food and review the basics of the language we have covered. The top scorers will
get extra dojos!
Here’s the link to the quiz! The questions are timed so make sure you brush up on your Spanish
knowledge before you start!
