Climate Change and Energy Efficiency

Singapore has pledged to reduce our Emissions

Intensity1 by 36% from 2005 levels, and stabilise

our emissions with the aim of peaking around 2030.

Note:

1. Emissions Intensity refers to GHG Emissions per dollar of GDP, measured in CO2-equivalent per $.

is the key strategy to achieve our pledge.

• MELS and MEPS apply to single-phase refrigerators with a total

adjusted volume1 of up to 900L

• Refrigerators are categorised into 3 types:

MELS and MEPS for Household Refrigerators

Note:

1. Total adjusted volume (Vadj tot) is used in energy efficiency calculations to account for the higher energy use per

unit of storage volume of freezers.

Impact of Raising MEPS for Refrigerators

• Revised MEPS will remove about 80 out of some 500

refrigerator models in the market

• Affected models accounted for 17% of refrigerator sales in

2014

• Estimated annual cost savings to consumers is equivalent to the

yearly electricity cost of some 2,000 4-room HDB households

Review of Test Standards for Refrigerators

• NEA regularly reviews the energy performance test standards for

registrable goods under the Energy Conservation Act (ECA)

• For refrigerators, test standards currently adopted are

• IEC 62552:2007 or

• ISO 15502:2005

• New standard IEC 62552:2015 has been adopted in other jurisdictions

including Japan and Thailand

• NEA would like to find out suppliers’ experience with IEC 62552:2015

use

• Further details will be shared via email

• Current test standards (IEC 62552:2007 or ISO 15502:2005) remain

applicable until further notice
