Monday 18th May 2020LO to create a story board of a poem.

This week, our English work is going to be based on the poem ‘The Raven’ by Edgar Allan Poe.

This poem was written in 1845 (the Victorian era) and therefore some of the language in the poem is challenging.

Don’t worry if you don’t understand every word of the poem-although you can always use a thesaurus or online search to find out definitions.

You will be able to follow the story of the poem in the same way we followed the story of the Highway Man.

It is time to read the Gothic poem ‘The Raven’ by Edgar Allen Poe. The poem is on the next slides.

You can also listen to a reading of the poem here… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BefliMlEzZ8&t=27s

Try to work out what is happening in the poem.

It begins with a man reading his book in bed at night-time….

Who is Lenore? Why is the man sad?Who is knocking at the window? Why?

in the poem.

The raven is a long poem about a man who is grieving for his lost love, Lenore.

He is distracted from his reading by a tapping at his bedroom door. He thinks

at first that it is a visitor, then he thinks it is the wind, then eventually, he opens the shutters and a raven flies in. This

raven can only say one word –‘Nevermore.’ The word Nevermore is an old

fashioned way of saying ‘never again.’ Why do you think the raven

says ‘Nevermore’?

If you are finding the poem difficult, here are some animated versions that will help you understand the plot better.

The Simpsons did a very good version of the story…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLiXjaPqSyY

An animated cartoon of the story…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLbe4JwE6-0&t=43s

Although the poem never tells us directly, we can infer the raven says ‘Nevermore’ because the main character will never see his love Lenore again!

A Gothic poem by Edgar Allen Poe. A man is asleep in his chamber- he is grieving for his love Lenore.

Suddenly, he hears a tapping at the bedroom door.

The man is scared and looks outside but there is nothing there but darkness. He goes back inside

his room.

-The man hears knocking again. He looks but it is just the wind.-He hears knocking a third time- this time at the window. He is very scared. -The man opens the window and there is a raven.-The raven says ‘Nevermore’.

There is no-one at the door. It is just very dark so the man goes back to bed.

The man hears another knock at the window. He feels scared and nervous.
