NON NOBIS SOLUM

Recently drama students had the opportunity of working with professional actors from the Grin and Tonic Theatre Troupe. Students were enthusiastic and challenged in learning new things about themselves and others as performers.

It was great to see everyone participating and volunteering in the workshops. Afterwards many students asked if they could do it all over again. Many thanks to Adam for organising and motivating our students to succeed.

The venue for today's workshops was the new and improved V Block. V Block is now an amazing performance space.

Kylie Lambert—HOD Visual and Performing Arts and LOTE

PHOTOGRAPHY TRIP Year 12 photography students had the fabulous opportunity to go on excursion with Ms Gar-gan and Mr Christensnen last week.

Students had a great time on their adventures and visited places such as the 'Rainforestation' on the Kuranda Range. Students were exceptionally well behaved and took thousands of images that will be used in the classroom.

Kylie Lambert—Head of Department Visual and Performing Arts and Languages.

PRINCIPAL’S WORDS It is already nearly the end of Term 2, the building work to upgrade classrooms in preparation for Year 7 coming to high school in 2015 is nearly complete. My leadership team are working hard to prepare for this important move for the Year 6 students coming to high school

The cluster transition plan is available on the school website, please take some time to read it. If you have any feedback please email me.

Over the coming months I will be holding parent forums in our partner primary schools to seek further feedback about junior and secondary schooling.

Mareeba State High School is committed to providing the best possible learning environment for our students.

As a function of this, my Deputy Principals and I will be spending 1—2 full days every week in classrooms, in order to help improve the teaching and learning that happens on a daily basis.

Therefore, we may not always be available to speak with you when you drop in or telephone us. However, we really do value communicating with you.

So, when you want to speak with one of us, please contact our personal assistants, who will schedule a time to talk.

This newsletter is full of meaning, fantastic student achievements and activities. I am especially looking forward to the drama production of "Hasta La Vista, Dracula!" playing 13th and 14th June at the new refurbished covered stage.

Warm regards to all families.

SCHOOL BUS In 2014 Mareeba State High School was fortunate enough to be able to lease its own Bus. The vehicle allows the school to deliver a wider variety of programs that require transport to and from venues outside the school district. It also allows the school the ability to offer extra-curricular opportunities at reduced costs to the student body. The Bus is available for hire when not in use by the school to the community and requires a driver with an LR Licence.

Any queries please feel free to contact Christian Stewart (Head of Department Health) on 4086 2717.

DISABILITY DATA COLLECTION Mareeba State High School is part of a collection process to collect data on students who are receiving adjustments due to a disability as defined under the Disability Discrimination ACT.

A parent letter and fact sheet were sent home with students previously to provide more detail about this process. It is important that data is collected on students receiving assis-tance due to a disability.

Consultation with parents is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. We will therefore con-tinue to consult with you.

While only data that cannot identify your child will be sub-mitted outside of the Department, if you do not wish for your child’s details to be included, please let me know.

Information and fact sheets are available to help you make a decision from the:

Department’s website: http://education.qld.gov.au/curriculum/disability-data-collection.html

Australian Government Department of Education website: http://education.gov.au/nationally-consistent-collection-data-school-students-disability

Alternatively, if you have any queries about the collection please contact either Jo Soothill, Principal or Michelle Sturgiss Head of Learning Support

Michelle Sturgiss— Head of Special Education and Learning Support.

LOST PROPERTY Please ensure that all property is clearly labelled. Hats and water bottles are easily mislaid so if labelled they can be returned to their rightful owner. Students are en-couraged to talk to the teacher of the last class where they had the lost item and then check Student Service (A Block) or the main front office.

INTERACT The Mareeba State High School Interact Club attended the Rotary District Conference in Ayr on May 3/4. The club received 2 awards for the work that they have been doing in the Interact Club. The New Generation Shield which is awarded for the most money raised for a rotary project and the Arthur Leinster Trophy for the best display at conference. The students also raised $83 in a purple pinky project in which all money goes to the END POLIO NOW campaign. ROSTRUM VOICE OF YOUTH Two of our students participated in the Rostrum Voice of Youth regional final for the Cairns and Far North District.

Finn Weaver and Mateen Latif both prepared and delivered a 6 minute speech on the topic “Climb Every Mountain”, and were also required to prepare a short notice speech of 3 minutes duration with only 15 minutes preparation.

Both boys did very well and received positive feedback from the judges.

This round of the competition leads directly to the State Finals. The winner was a student from St Monica’s. The runner-up is the Reserve who will go to the state finals should the winner be unable to attend.

I am delighted to announce that Mateen Latif came second on the day and is therefore the reserve for the State Final. Christina Ellacott—Gifted & Talented Coordinator and Senior Teacher

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK Mareeba State High Schools combine NAIDOC and Reconcili-ation Week celebrations kicked off with students ranging from year 8 to 12, performing a traditional dance on parade lead by community members, Sam Rodgers and Desmond Burns and Traditional Aborigi-nal elder, Aunty Loretta Baker performed the welcome to country, acknowledging the traditional owners of land.

Continued celebrations will occur for the remainder of the week during lunch times including, a contemporary dance workshop, guest speakers, boomerang throwing and football competitions.

BILL TURNERS CUP Mareeba State High School nomi-nated both a male and female U15 years team for the Bill Turners Cup. Unfortunately the girls did not make it through, howev-er the boys became the Tableland Winners with an undefeat-ed score card and as a result move to the next round where they are up against Cairns State High School.

Zane Singleton, Giovan Spena, James Stewart, James Elmes, Hayden Russo and Mateen Latif have all been selected for the Peninsula Tableland Team. Congratulations boys and

great effort girls.

Christian Stewart—Head of Department Health

NAPLAN NEWS Over 3 days in week 4, Mareeba State High School Year 9 students sat the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numer-acy (NAPLAN). These NAPLAN tests are designed to assess the skills of students in literacy and numeracy. The specific purpos-es are:

To collect data our Years 9 students for reporting to parents/carers and schools for systematic reporting;

To accommodate the assessment of stu-dents against national minimum standards;

Inform the school of student progress relative to others around the nation and identify areas of need and focus.

The program assessed students using com-mon national tests in Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation), and Numeracy.

Students applied the knowledge and skills developed as part of their everyday class-room curriculum, as well as specialist prep-aration activities to do their very best in each of the 5 tests.

To give our students the greatest chance of success, a delicious healthy choices break-fast was provided, kindly donated by Coles Mareeba. Special thanks goes to Deb Heathfield – Tuckshop Convenor, Hazel Bensted – Guidance Officer, and Jim Ballin – Year 9 Co-ordinator for their support with catering both at breakfast time, and during test breaks.

Paul Charles—Deputy Principal
