LEADERSHIP CAMP 2015 Year 11 Leadership Camp is over for another year and the future Seniors of the school are ready to step into their role as leaders in 2016. The Leadership Camp was designed to allow students to step out of their comfort

zones, learn the importance of cooperation and team work, and to be able to make decisions through consulta-tion. A range of land and water activities were on offer, including land navigation, canoeing, mountain biking, low ropes activities, abseiling, camp cooking, and team building games.

Following a long tradition at Mareeba SHS of differentiating within our camp structure, students had the option of choosing between two groups, either the Ultimate Challenge or the Barra Challenge. The Ultimate Challenge took students into the wilderness and placed emphasis on working together to achieve goals. Carrying all of their gear with them on a three day hike, setting up tents, cooking their own meals, and completing a variety of challenges presented to them, the students came back exhausted but extremely confident and proud of their achievements. Big thanks go to Mr McClel-land for overall organisation of the camp itself and to Mr Weaver, Mr O’Neill and Mrs Newlands for coordinating a successful Ultimate Challenge.

The Barra Challenge, even though it was more relaxed, was still a challenge and achieved similar goals to the Ultimate Challenge without as much physical exertion. Students participated in moun-tain biking, low ropes challenges, canoe and land navigation, and abseiling. These activities required them to work together to make decisions, face their fears, and complete the tasks giv-en to them. Thanks go to Mr Richardson, Mr Hamilton, Ms Gar-diner, Mr Sullivan, Ms Leet, Mr Ralph and staff members from TEEC for their outstanding efforts. The catering was organised

“Building a Better

NON NOBIS SOLUM

PRINCIPAL’S WORDS Mareeba State High School has continued to provide excellent opportunities for students during the 2015 year. Coming into the school as a new Principal for Term 4 has allowed me to look at the great options offered to our students through academic options, extra curricula activities and special targeted programs. I will look further at the great work done at the school in the Express newspaper article in two weeks’ time.

With the year drawing to a close, we had the great opportunity to meet the future leaders of our school in the Year 6 students who attended the Transition day. Many thanks to the feeder schools of Mareeba SS, Biboohra SS, Mutchilba SS, St Thomas’s and Walkamin SS for their support of the transition day. The students were exposed to a number of activities during the day and some quotes received were:

“My favourite part of today was SOSE. We learnt about Egyptian mummies. My other favourite was lunchtime activities.” from Kara.

“My favourite thing about today was English, SOSE, lunch activities and meeting my class and new people” from Layne

“Well organised – I really enjoyed the lunch time activities” from Lea

Thanks to the great support we have received this year from our staff, parents and community. I hope you have a safe and satisfying holiday season. I look forward to seeing you all in 2016.

days. Her efforts were much appreciated by both staff and students.

On the last night all students came together for ‘Night of the Tribes’ in which they demonstrated their leadership through creative banners, body paint, songs and dances. Thanks to Mr Jones who coordinates this culminating event every year.

Many staff members were lucky enough to ob-serve students of the 2015 Year 11 cohort demonstrating exceptionally high levels of con-duct and leadership potential. This is a year level that continuously rises to whatever challenge is in front of them, and I am looking forward to seeing these students become the Seniors and Leaders of 2016. .

SELF DISCOVERY THROUGH ADVENTURE.

2016 Seniors concluded their year by choosing their own adventure.

Why go on Camp?

To ‘unplug’ from the rhythms of modern life

To realize that ‘getting lost’ really helps you to ‘find yourself’

To appreciate the beauty of our local outdoor environment

To refine social/group skills through struc-tured activities and informal gatherings

Why do we prioritize the leadership camp at this time of the school calendar?

To build relationships between students and as many staff as possible

Karen Stankovich—Year 11 Coordinator, Teacher

SEIDENKRANZ FAREWELL After 4 years as the Deputy Principal at Mareeba State High School it is time for me to say fare-well, as I take on a new position and ‘sea change’ at Mossman State High School. I have thorough-ly enjoyed working with the students, staff and community at Mareeba. Contributing to the success and future pathways of your young peo-ple has been a rewarding experience and I thank you for your support. I wish every family a happy Christmas holiday and a prosperous new year . Teena and Kipp Seidenkranz—Deputy Principal and Behaviour Support Teacher

YEAR 6 TRANSITION DAY On Wednesday 2nd December, Mareeba State High School held a transition day for our 2016 Year 7 students. We started the day with a number of team building chal-lenges to build students cooperation and

communication with each other. Classes rotated around the school to English, Maths and SOSE subjects, giving the opportunity to meet many of the high school teachers. Some classes got to experience electives, such as Art, Dance, Drama, Manual Arts and Home Economics. I had the pleasure of visiting each class throughout the day, meeting the wonderful Year 7 students of 2016. I look forward to the role of Year 7 Coordinator for 2016 and the many activities, trips and learning oppor-tunities we will experience together.

YEAR 10 DINNER On Wednesday 25th November, 46 Year 10 students and 6 teachers celebrated the year with a two course dinner at the Mareeba RSL. Following dinner, the students chose a few DJs from their group and enjoyed a few hours of music and dancing. Everyone was very well behaved and it was a fun and casual night.

On the last day of school Year 10 students played sports in the hall for two lessons and finished off the year with a cool down swim at the town pool. It was a pleasure to work with the Year 10s this year. They are an amazing group of confi-dent and sensible young adults and I look for-ward to all the adventures to come next year.
