MYTHINGS Smart Sensor Datasheet

Note: This datasheet is based on the 2.0 version of the Smart Sensor firmware. If you have not upgraded your Smart Sensors, contact [email protected] for the updated firmware.

Overview The MYTHINGS Smart Sensor is a self-contained, battery-powered, multi-purpose sensor that can capture data points including ambient temperature, humidity, air pressure, acceleration, gyroscope, and GPS. It includes a USB connector with serial interface functionality to act as a modem for data transmission from any computing device and charge the integrated Lithium-ion battery. While the Smart Sensor ships with a pre-configured transmission frequency of once every 60 seconds, you can change it to additional frequencies. The Smart Sensor includes an internal rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, capable of powering the device for approximately 10,000 messages, depending on configuration and environmental conditions. MYTHINGS wireless transmission range of the Smart Sensor is up to 15 km line-of-site to the MYTHINGS Base Station, or up to 5 km in urban environments.

What’s Included in the Package The package includes:

• One wireless multipurpose smart sensor. • One omni-directional external antenna.

Standard Mode of Operation To power on the sensor, press and hold the on/off button for 3 seconds until the transmit LED light signals blue. See Controls section for more details. The first message sent by the Smart Sensor after powering it on contains the radio and MCU version numbers (also sent every time you power cycle the sensor). The following message contain the sensor’s payload. Thereafter, a message is sent based on the configured transmission interval. This transmission frequency is configurable. Details are discussed in Changing Transmission Frequency.

Bidirectional Operation The MYTHINGS Smart Sensor includes full bidirectional capabilities, from both a firmware stack and application layer perspective. Bidirectional operation enables additional features including Over-the-air-attach, acknowledgement of received messages, as well as application layer functions including:

• Get sensor settings (e.g., User Data Encryption enabled) • Set sensor settings (e.g., Disable User Data Encryption) • Get the mode of every sensor (e.g., GPS is enabled) • Set the mode of every sensor (e.g., disable GPS) • Get message period (e.g., messages are transmitted every 5 minutes) • Set message period (transmit messages every 5 minutes) • Set factory reset. • In order to test and use these functions, both a BehrTech Base Station and BehrTech

Network Management is required. For more information, please contact [email protected]

How to add a Sensor to MYTHINGS Central Every Smart Sensor includes a unique EpEui (a 64-bit IEEE unique identifier) and a 128-bit Network Session key. Both values are stored on a QR tag located on the label on the front of the sensor. You can extract this information using a QR reader, and then copy the identifier and key when provisioning the sensor. Alternatively, you scan the QR image directly into MYTHINGS Central by pointing the QR tag into your device’s camera.

Note: the EpEui information in the QR tag includes \r\n to indicate a new line. When reading the QR tag using a reader, do not copy the \r\n as part of the EpEui when adding the new node into MYTHINGS Central. Also, be aware that the QR tag does not include the Node Type. You must add this separately.

Sensor Data Payload Structure Unless specified at the time of order, the MYTHINGS Smart Sensor is configured to transmit a data packet every 60 seconds. The payload structure of the message is presented in the following table:

Smart Sensor Payload Structure Byte Description Type

1 2 Acceleration - X 16-bit integer (int16)

3 4 Acceleration - Y 16-bit integer (int16)

5 6 Acceleration - Z 16-bit integer (int16)

Controls

Front right to left • On/Off button – (press and hold for 3 seconds). • Mode Select/GPS button – this is a multi-function button. Functions include select

between one of three transmission frequencies; restore back to the default transmission frequency and enter bridge mode. You can also enable and disable GPS. To view current settings, press the button for 1 second.

• Mode Indicator (Amber LED) – indicates one of five modes, while in Mode Select mode.

• Message Transmission Indicator (Blue LED) – indicates that the sensor is transmitting a message.

• Battery Charge / Mode Select Indicator (Green/Red LED) – green indicates that the battery is charging. Red (flashing) indicates that the sensor is in Mode Select mode. Note: The smart sensor will charge even if the sensor is powered off, provided it is connected to a charger. In this case, the green LED will not light up.

• USB (Micro-B) • SMA Antenna connector

Changing Transmission Frequency While the Smart Sensor ships with a pre-defined transmission frequency, you can change the frequency to three additional settings: every 60 seconds, every 15 minutes, or every 60 minutes.

To change transmission frequency:

1. Press and hold the Mode Select button for approximately 1 second. The red LED on the Mode Select indicator flashes on and off, indicating that the sensor is in Mode Select mode.

2. While the red LED flashes, press and depress the Mode Select button for 1 second or less. Each time that you press the button, the amber LED light flashes. As you continue to press the button, the number of flashes incrementally cycles between 1 and 5. Each number of flashes of the amber light indicates something different.

• 1 flash indicates the current transmission frequency, based on the original configuration.

• 2 flashes indicate a Tx frequency of 1 minute. • 3 flashes indicate a Tx frequency of 15 minutes. • 4 flashes indicate a Tx frequency of 60 minutes. • 5 flashes indicates that the Smart Sensor will be placed into bridge mode.

After selecting a mode, wait approximately 5 seconds. The Smart Sensor will use the selected settings.

To determine the current mode, press the Mode Select button very quickly (approximately ½ second).

Enabling and Disabling GPS You can also use the Mode Select button to enable and disable GPS. Although GPS is enabled by default, you can disable it. Running GPS reduces the battery life of the Smart Sensor.

To enable GPS:

1. Press and hold the Mode Select button for approximately 5 seconds. Immediately after enabling GPS, the Message Transmission indicator flashes for approximately 5 seconds. A message is immediately sent by the Smart Sensor. The message will include GPS payload data. To disable GPS, repeat the same procedure.

Using Bridge Mode When the Smart Sensor is in bridge mode, you can send AT commands to the radio module. You place the Smart Sensor into bridge mode by pressing the Mode Select button on the device. To place the sensor into bridge mode:

1. Launch a HyperTerminal program and configure the following setting: a. Baudrate configuration: 115200 b. Data bits: 8 c. Stop bit: 1 d. Parity: none e. Enable Implicit carriage return (CR) in every line feed (LF) f. Local Echo: Force on

2. Press and depress the Mode Select button until the red LED Mode Indicator light flashes.

3. Continue to press and depress the Mode Select button Cycle until the red LED indicator flashes 5 times.

4. Wait 5 seconds. The Smart Sensor is in bridge mode.

Note: while in bridge mode, the Smart Sensor will not transmit. To exit bridge mode, restart the Smart sensor by pressing the on/off button for three seconds. Refer to the MYTHINGS Endpoint AT Protocol Guide for details regarding how to send messages via the serial interface as well as the commands themselves. Contact [email protected] to obtain the guide.
