EDITOR’S NOTE
Namaste,
What makes something a celebration? Well, celebrations are usually only reserved for special
occasions and specific dates. We pause, focus, become attentive and give our full attention to the
celebratory event or a person. We open our hearts, minds and we are fully present as well as
involved in the moment to celebrate. A lot of it has to do with our state of mind in that moment and
what if we could have that state of mind every day, or even every moment? How can we use Yoga to
celebrate life as whole and to transform the common day reality into an extraordinary reality?
As a way of life, Yoga teaches us to slow down, to quieten our minds, to open our hearts, to be
present and live fully with consciousness. Instead of few special days, Yoga teaches us to make
every moment of life into a divine experience of celebration. This all sounds simple, but it’s not! Our
monkey minds have a hard time just simply slowing down, being quiet, noticing, being aware,
experiencing and being totally present for just a few minutes or even a few seconds! So, how can we
learn to quiet the mind effectively?
In Yoga, we use the body to train the mind. Also our breath plays an important part in cleansing and
rejuvenating our body from within with prana, life force. The focus on the breath also has a quieting
effect on the mind. In Yoga, we also learn to celebrate challenges as opportunities for growth. To
celebrate we have to learn to appreciate all of life, we have to be mindful of every breath, we have to
be in touch with reality in a deeper way and value each and every moment that is otherwise taken
for granted.
Stay healthy, stay happy :)

“Yoga celebrates life and happiness”
-
appiness is a fleeting dream for
Hmost of us. We tend to sway between the modes of being happy and unhappy at the fall of a hat.
Happiness is your own internal affair. No
one can make you happy or unhappy
without your permission. Choose to be
happy every single time. Things, people,
places, events and the external world keep
on changing. Key is finding inner true bliss
or happiness.
One need not get depressed and unhappy
seeing so much misery and selfishness
around. One need not keep bringing to
mind helplessly the negative aspect of life.
There is so much good and positive in this
world. Instances of love, care altruism are
very much alive. Life is much larger than
our limited thinking can comprehend.
What appears imperfect or painful maybe
is really for our ultimate good.
The quest for self-improvement is a good
thing. Make it a habit and remember to
enjoy the whole process. Continually seek
betterment or improvement without a
sincere appreciation for the present trials
of life means we run the risk of missing the
true essence of Yoga and quite honestly,
life itself. There are no magical cures or
fancy Yoga postures, or venerable Gurus,
o r b o o k i s h k n o w l e d g e t h a t c a n
manufacture your happiness for you. It
comes from within and finding it is a
different experience for everyone.
As Tagore wrote about how the infant
shifted from one breast to another, breast
cries at the loss of nourishment, but the
mother knew better as she was providing
better nourishment to the infant child on
the other breast.
We must never forget that nature has its
own plan. We should work hard but
u l t i m a t e l y. ‘ S u b m i t t o t h e l a r g e r
process—Nature—or God’.
In Yoga, we talk of wading through pain
and pleasure, success and failure and
maintaining a balanced mind. It tells us,
“Learn to accept the negative as you
accept the positive, for they all are
temporary only.” Both experiences are
beneficial and teach us something.
The child on the seashore may not be
ready to believe that the sand castle he
built can be swept away by the waves. But
the adult knows this and is ready also when
it does happen.
“Life is much larger than our
l i m i t e d t h i n k i n g c a n
comprehend.” –Dr. Jayadeva
Yogendra
Keep an attitude of gratitude. Every day,
list in your personal journal three things
for which you are grateful. They can be
anything from a warm house, someone
who made you smile, an email or bright sun
on your face. Review the list once in a while
and notice how it makes you feel.
Contentment, faith and gratitude off and
on the Yoga mat is the key to Perpetual
Yoga Happiness. So next time life throws
you curve balls, choose to be happy no
matter what. Find your inner OM and do
your thing! Yoga celebrates life and
happiness. Stay blessed and be happy.

"Anna poorna Brahman", encapsulates the
meaning of Sattvic ahara that is ever
energizing, never depleting source
BRAHMAN.
Foods (Anna) rich in energy (Prana), eaten
in moderation (mittahara) is complete
(Poorna) in nutrition (Satva), hence it is
Sattvic Ahara.
Sattvic Ahara emphasis the strong effects
of various foods on body, mind and
emotions. Our externalized sense organs
easily and often fall prey to foods that
appeal to smell and taste, usually junk
foods eaten in disorderly routine resulting
innumerable disorders like acute gut
problems, diabetes, hypertension, and
mental disturbances. This explains the
saying by Chandogya Upanishad "As the
food so the mind, as the mind so the man".
Spicy, stale, oily fatty foods evoke Rajasik (
strong passion)and Tamasik (sloth, inertia)
emotions beside playing havoc with the
bodily girth. Negative emotions prompt
aggressive, depressive and complacent
behavior. This necessitates Sattvic Ahara
for physical and physiological health,
promoting mental and emotional well
being.
Sattvic Ahara is wholesome, seasonal,
easily prepared and complete in its
nutritional value. It meets one’s budget,
BMR, energy requirements, age, prakrithi,
lifestyle, availability and very importantly
it is palatable and easy on the gut. It is a
balance of natural, fresh, locally grown
organic fruits, vegetables, whole grains,
lentils, pulses, nuts and seeds, unsaturated
fats and filtered oils. Essentially, a combo
of cooked and raw vegetarian foods.
It is devoid of foods which are Rajasik and
Tamasik in nature such as onion, garlic,
stale, fermented, unhygienically prepared
foods, preservatives, additives, artificial
flavorings, leavening and coloring agents.
Due to their conducive qualities, they
balance out the excessively secreted and
vitiated disturbances of the 3 Doshas
Vatha (gas), Pitta(Acids), Kapha (phlegm).
Sattvic Ahara is abundant in all the
nutrients and trace elements needed for
absorption, assimilation and elimination of
foods on daily basis.
Yoga philosophy promotes Sattvic Ahara
for a balanced, peaceful state of mind and
orderly sustenance, also equipoise in
interpersonal relationships and success in
our stress oriented material world. Last
but not the least, Sattvic Ahara is most
s u i t a b l e f o r t h e fi g u r e c o n s c i o u s

Transformation through Yoga
Name: Jayprakash Varandani
Health Issues: Prostate enlargement
Q: State your ailment
A: In 2014, I was diagnosed with prostate
enlargement, which is a common ailment
among men today. Some of the key issues
related to this ailment are irregular and
i n s u f fi c i e n t o u t fl o w o f u r i n e , a n d
weakening of urinary glands.
I visited a specialist, who prescribed some
medication to cure me of this ailment.
Initially the medicines were effective but
as time passed by, the effect of these
medicines reduced, making it difficult for
me to undertake my day-to-day activities.
In January 2016, I decided to take a second
opinion and visited a specialist surgeon.
He advised multiple tests and based on my
reports, asked me to undergo a small
surgery to cure the ailment. I decided to go
ahead with the surgery.
For this, I was hospitalized for two days,
which includes around 3 hours of surgery
and 24 hours of post-surgery observation.
Post-surgery, situation was better but not
completely cured. When analyzed, it was
identified that my urinary bladder was too
weak to pump out the flow and hence in
addition to medicines, I was asked to do
some exercise to strengthen the bladder.
Q: Family history of the disease, please
share the particulars?
A: None.
Q: How have you benefited from Yoga
and The Yoga Institute (TYI)?
A : I n F e b r u a r y 2 0 1 6 , a l o n g w i t h
medication, I got myself associated with
The Yoga Institute. I explained the entire
situation to the internal doctors there,
submitting my medical reports for better
guidance.
After three months of regular medication
and prescribed exercise, I visited my
doctor for check-up and to my surprise,
the results were positive. My urinary
bladder had strengthened and the urine
flow has reached almost to normalcy. I was
then asked to continue with my exercises
and the medicines were reduced almost to
a fourth.
Today, I can undertake all my day-to-day
activities and would like to thank The Yoga
Institute for their constant advice and
support.
I continue my Yoga journey with the
Institute with Men’s Regular Classes and
am forever grateful to Yoga Guru Dr.
Hansaji for everything.

HAPPY BIRTHDAYDr. Jayadeva Yogendra
With respect and love, as we celebrate the birthday of Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra, a true yogi;We learn to renounce the results of our actions and keep our words low-key.

Yo u m u s t b e a m a z e d a s t o o n t h i s
auspicious occasion what is an actor and
let alone a villain is doing here? It’s like
बेगानी शाद म अला दवाना (it means an
unrelated person is getting too much
involved and excited) but there is a
relation. In 1969, Film and Television
Institute of India, Pune where I had joined
to get my training in acting; I was
introduced to Yoga by The Yoga Institute
i n s t r u c t o r S h r i S h a m b h u n a t h j i , a n
esteemed Yoga teacher. So, I have been
related to Yoga for the past 50 years.
Villain association in films has also
benefited where Yoga taught me “बेमानी का
काम भी ईमानदारी से करो” (means play your
part or do your duty conscientiously even
when you are playing a villain!)
Yoga is not about a particular religion or
belonging to a particular class of society.
One incident comes to mind- Early
seventies a group of Pakistani people had
come to The Yoga Institute to receive Yoga
education. When they returned to their
homeland, they were greeted with hostile
remarks and questions. Related to this,
one song comes to mind,
“कुछ तो लोग कहगे, लोग का काम है कहना
छोड़ो बेकार क बात म कह बीत ना जाए रैना!”
(Means people have the tendency to talk
it’s their job to say something no matter
what one does.)
The group was asked some questions. Why
were they wasting their time and trying to
learn Yoga which is a non-Muslim subject?
Is Yoga not related to Muslim religion?
What use is it to them?
On hearing such questions, they replied
“Yoga is related to the Muslim religion.
Yoga education has made us into better
Muslims!”
Yoga is not about religion. It is perhaps one
of the greatest gifts that ancient India has
given to the entire world. Today many
people are using media to make Yoga a
commercial means to earn. One should be
alert and away from such people and
places.
The Yoga Institute is one such place which
has been quietly and selflessly working for
the past 100 years for the welfare of
society. Dr.Jayadeva, who had been the
P r e s i d e n t o f t h e I n s t i t u t e , w a s a
remarkable person. Few words about Dr
Jayadevaji- “He was a real yogi and karma
yogi. He was a God-sent gift to benefit
people of this world. He lived his life for
others. He was responsible for infusion of
Bhavas with Yoga and introducing Yoga to
schools and Yoga education to the entire
nation. He used to speak very less and
always had a gentle smile on his face.” A
short tribute comes to mind-
“परदो को मलेगी मंज़ल एक दन, ये फैले ए
उनके पर बोलते है, वही लोग रहते है खामोश
असर, ज़माने म जनके नर बोलते है!”
I wish to thank Ma Hansaji and Hirshiji for
inviting to be part of this special occasion
and my best wishes to The Yoga Institute
which is on the verge of 100 years
completion. I humbly thank everyone who
has been a part of this historic Seminar.

T h e c o n v e n t i o n a l a n c i e n t I n d i a n
philosophy comprises of six systems (Sha
Darshana) namely- Samkhya, Yoga, Nyaya,
Vaisheshika, Mimamsa and Vedanta.
‘Samkhya’ is one of the Shad Darshana. The
idea of enumeration that is generally
connected with the Samkhya exposition
was taken up in the Moksa-parvan as
elsewhere only in the systematization of
what was vague and introspective. The
basic Samkhya postulates: of a belief in the
miserable nature of the world and release
being commensurate with avoidance of
pain, the fixation of the twenty-five
Samkhya categories short of Ishvara, the
complete separation of the psychical from
the physical, the reality of Prakriti and the
belief in the transformation of the highest
principles into various evolutes, the
implication of gaining harmony with the
highest spiritual principle rather than a
unification with it and lastly the emphasis
on discrimination as a means to release.
The spiritual thinkers, who are mentioned
in the early Samkhya discussions, give us
early information of the formation of the
different Samkhya categories. But while
the thinkers had a l imited outlook
extending up to the physical body, the
r o a m i n g m e n d i c a n t s a n d p o p u l a r
exponents of the Samkhya school of Kapila
made a substantial contribution to the
Samkhya system in the from svabhava and
other doctrines. Some information about
Kapila is available to us even in the Moksa-
parvan. When we think of the early
Samkhya, it is very probable that the entire
Moksa-parvan is a theistic recast of an
older form of philosophy that greatly
resembles the later classical Samkhya
system. We get instances of resemblance
between the Moksa-parvan and the
Samkhya karika, not only in ideas but also
in technical terms and phrases.
It is seen that the formative nature of the
Samkhya in the Moksa-parvan is very
apparent in the discussion pertaining to
evolution. There are many types of
creation referred to, while the importance
i n t h e s e c r e a t i o n s h i f t s f r o m t h e
Mahabhutas, that are at times regarded as
the be all and end all of everything, to mind
and intellect which are taken to be distinct
from the elements; help is also taken here
from the introspective practice of Yoga in
the formulation of the evolutionary series
while in the four Vyuhas of the Vaisnavas
w e h a v e t h e fi x a t i o n o f t h e f o u r
psychological categories of the Samkhyas.
We also meet with the group of eight, nine,
eleven, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen,
eighteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty-four,
twenty-five, twenty-six, thirty, etc. as
occurring in the Moksa-parvan.
The term Samkhya occurs often in the
Moksa-parvan in the sense of a system. In
this connection, we have some references
to Samkhya-jnana, Samkhya-vidya,
Samkhya-sastra, Samkhya-darsana or to
Kapilam. It is thus not true that the term
Samkhya is used in the Mahabharata in the
sense of philosophical understanding
merely. On the contrary, an examination of
the philosophical parts of the Moksa-
parvan does not fail to reveal the existence
of a Samkhya system.
Changes occur in the external world for
our own good, in the larger sense. Only
change results in growth. Therefore,
change is important in spite of the
equilibrium being disturbed. But a new
equilibrium is being created. Samkhya
Yoga helps to take a more understanding
view of the changes taking place in life. It
creates harmony and reduces suffering.
Experience is for our learning and occurs
in every event. It is for our own sake that
we have to learn growing up. For example,
an asthmatic gets a cure for his asthma, but
some other complication like ulcer takes
its place. Unless he takes care and
overcomes his anxiety, worry, etc. the
problem will only take a new shape.
Modern thinking is poor. Such thinking has
created uncertainty and a feeling of
hopelessness.
The Samkhya thinking is that whatever
occurs is part of a whole design and not for
crushing or destroying us. This thinking
strengthens persons. The universe is for
our growth.
P r a k r i t i e x i s t s f o r t h e g r o w t h ,
development and enjoyment of Purusha
and not vice versa. Teleology is the
purpose behind evolution. The ultimate
justification of evolution is an evolution of
consciousness.
We should bring this philosophy into or
practical life. Much of what is philosophy
of Samkhya is the experience of Yoga. We
are unable to see the subtler changes that
are occurring. Yoga helps in creating
awareness and better observation. It helps
us to understand that the world is a place
where changes keep taking place.
Purusha or the spirit is an unchanging and
eternal entity. Everything in the world is
for the Purusha. Matter by itself has no
meaning. Spirit or Consciousness is the
reason for the existence of matter and
provides matter with a meaning.

This place has given me the direction
that I had been searching my whole life.
Trying several professions from being an
actor, RJ to trying to run a business. I
never felt content until I stepped inside
The Yoga Institute. I started with the 21
days better living course, which soon led
me to do the 7 days health camp and
then the 3 months teacher training. I
later stayed back to give a hand in the
Institute's daily activities. Guess, I just
didn't want to leave this beautiful place
and and the people here, including the
wonderful teachers. I am what I am
because of The Yoga Institute.

good and Dr. Hansaji is always there to
guide wherever I find difficulty. It has
transformed my life & has taught me the
kind of attitude one should have
towards life. It is more like my family, I
am grateful to The Yoga Institute &
congratulate them on their centenary
year.
Aruna BhattTeacher at The Yoga Institute
I remember walking down The Yoga
Institute lawn, on 1st January 2009. In
48 years of my life, I felt I was at the right
place for right reasons.
I did one month certification and it was
an enjoyable experience, I decided to
deep dive and get more thorough with
Yoga as a way of life. Later I enrolled for 1
year TTC, somewhere around April
2009. Life felt like everything was falling
in place with my daughter married, my
younger daughter in her final year. In
D e c 2 0 1 0 , m y h u s b a n d ' s h e a l t h
deteriorated, and before I could
understand, I lost him to will of God.
I was trying to get back from pits of
depression, I came back to the the
institute. Hansaji’s kind words of
empathy and support brought about a
reason to try and carry on.
I rejoined the Institute, since then there
is no looking back.

YOGASATTVA
“Happiness is the supreme level of success.” Founder, Shri Yogendraji
Shri Yogendraji - Father ofModern Yoga Renaissance
In Yoga, exuberance of non-pain (Aklista) state is
happiness and the highest category of happiness is
absoluteness (Kaivalya). Between the two, in fact,
there is only the difference in degree what is termed
happiness representing the material maximum, and
absoluteness, the spiritual or evaluative. The idea of
the yogi is to achieve subliminal consciousness
through such happiness and seek permanent
happiness in absoluteness. For those who may not
believe in the latter, “it is immaterial whether the
possibility of the ultimate deliverance (Mukti) exists
or not because one thing is certain that the practice of
Yoga does endow the maximum amount of happiness
which is otherwise not available.”
For example, if good health is regarded as the source
of bodily happiness, then the practice of Yoga
provides for the maintenance of positive good health
through less laborious and more economical and
constitutional methods than is otherwise possible.
Yoga Asanas can help us in many ways to live a healthy
life even under adverse circumstances, physical,
psychological, social and spiritual. As a prophylactic
measure, Yoga recommends techniques for greater
awareness and insight about our own personality and
better functioning of the body-mind complex.
