EDITORS NOTE
Namaste,
The word Yoga takes its root from the Sanskrit word yuj, which translates to union. On 16th Feb
2018, Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra surrendered to this union of individual energy and universal energy.
Fondly known as Dr Sahab, he had mastered the art of self control. It isnt a wonder that his father
and Founder of The Yoga Institute, Shri Yogendraji once said of Dr. Jayadeva, He is a true Yogi. He
never gets angry. Dr. Jayadeva always said, real Yoga is balance of Chitta/Mind in any
circumstances. An exemplary yogi, he lived up to this saying verbatim until his last breath.
A simple man and a true Yogi, Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra was born in 1929. As the President of The
Yoga Institute, he continued to carry on the Founders legacy in his silent and sincere way. He
played a pivotal role in making fundamental changes to further cause of Yoga and spread message
of holistic health and peace through Yoga for well-being of humanity.A scholar, a visionary, a philosopher and a Guru to millions of Yoga followers, he propagated Yoga as
a way to encourage conscious evolution. He will continue to enlighten our paths with his great
teachings forever. Revered as an epitome of modesty, when asked if he has any disciples, he virtuously responded,
No, except in a way, my wife. The world of Yoga and The Yoga Institute are blessed as his legacy is
being continued by his wife Smt. Hansaji Yogendra and millions of sadhakas.
Dr Sahab also said that life should be a celebration and one must continue celebrating forever. This
indeed he taught us even in his last moments by giving us a reason to celebrate with the divine birth
of junior yogi. As the hands of the clock crossed 12 midnight, the Universe was making way for a
new life to enter in form of small bundle of joy with two hands and two feets in to the Yogendra
family. With the divine blessings, the legacy continues as Hrishiji and I welcomed our little baby boy
on 16th Feb 2018. After hearing the good news of his new grandson, within a few minutes, Dr.
Jayadeva chose to breathe his last and moved on to a higher journey.

humble Guru, a complete yogi and
Apure divinity left for his heavenly abode on 16th Feb 2018. The President of The Yoga Institute Dr
Jayadeva Yogendra passed away after
enriching the lives of millions across the
globe through his teachings and legacy of
Yoga. Born into a family of Yogis, Shri
Yogendraji's pride and joy; he was a true
karma yogi who never got angry all his life.
He had a spiritual inclination since his
early childhood days. When asked to write
a n e s s a y a b o u t h a p p y c h i l d h o o d
experiences; most pupils wrote about a
magical day in the zoo or happy birthday
party, but he wrote about how happy he
felt meditating amidst nature! Under Shri
Yogendrajis guidance, Dr. Jayadeva
progressed quickly and excelled at every
given task. His contribution to the
application of classical Yoga in daily life for
the householders has seen benchmark
programmes, a wide array of publications,
research papers and editorials that cover a
diverse range of problems, numerous Yoga

for various ailments.

retrospective self-effacing nature has had
a brilliant academic career. On the other
hand, I was forced to give up my cherished
career in medicine, due to severe asthma.
However, I was determined and enrolled in
college, to study B.Sc. and Law as well. I
also pursued classical music and singing as
well as played the Sitar. During this period,
the asthma was a persistent factor in my
life. When all remedies had failed, I finally
joined The Yoga Institute. Here, my
instructor was none other than Dr.
Jayadeva.
Seeing my prowess in the most difficult
asanas (which I had been practising since
childhood) he encouraged me to join the
advanced Teachers Training Course at the
Institute. Here, for the first time, I was
exposed to the theory behind each asana. I
learnt the various elements that went into
making Yoga such a complete science, and
in the process of learning, my asthma
vanished. Magically or so it seemed. It
hasnt recurred to date!
My decision to marry Dr. Jayadeva was
deeply opposed by my parents. He was my
senior and did not come from an equally
a f fl u e n t b a c k g r o u n d . A n d a ny w ay
wouldnt I be happier married to some
wealthy green card holder? But I was
adamant, and the marriage took place.
Then began the progressive years of the
Institute, as I was ably supported by Dr.
Jayadeva to bring about key revolutionary
changes in the field of Yoga by spreading
Yoga education especially for women.
Yoga had brought us together and kept us
going in the true Karma Yoga spirit. If Dr.
Jayadeva was the Sutra (pithy aphorism),
then I complemented as the Bhashya
(commentary). Together we forged a bond
that was so strong that it transformed the
concept of householder Yoga and broke
new ground in every aspect of Yoga be it
education, research, teacher training,
Yoga therapy, Yoga Sutra, etc. And with the
birth of our son Patanjali, Dr. Jayadeva
transformed in to a doting father who was
caring, attentive and mindful. He would
line up the stairs with favourite comic
books and then watch little Patanjali pick-
up each book with much joy and happiness.
Just like his father taught him; he taught
his son everything about Yoga.
Renowned for his Less is
more philosophy and his
s i m p l i c i t y h e w a s a
complete Yogi, a great
Guru, doting father and a
devoted husband.
Sadhakas at the Institute continues to
draw inspiration from his wisdom,
kindness, wit and unflinching commitment
to truth. In essence, he very much
continues to live on forever through his
invaluable teaching and in hearts of his
millions of his students spread across all
the continents, who came to him seeking
help and guidance.
Kudos to Dr. Jayadevas indomitable will
and exemplary Karma Yogi Spirit

Perform action, perform your duty,
even if you know that failure will,
inevitably accompany your actions.
A farmer ploughs his field, sows seed, and
irrigates, pulls out the weeds.
The sun, the moon, the rain and the wind-
also part of the larger process,
unite with man in his work,
and according to nature's law
provide him with sustenance.
Part of the produce will be eaten,
by the early bird, or many a worm.
Nature takes care of them too.
The farmer needs faith and patience.
We too, need patience and faith,
We too have to perform our duty,
develop a relaxed attitude towards
all life situations.
One should learn and grow
through life itself.
Deep inside us we wait for
a great event to take place in our life.
Meanwhile looking down upon daily routines
as if it is something insignificant.
We have to carry on our actions in moderation,
food, rest, recreation are not
away from our life and ideals.
Nothing should be considered insignificant.
The Gita treats life itself as a battlefield.
One should not run away,
thinking his duty lies elsewhere.
One has to involve oneself, participate,
and overcome the escape mentality. .
There is a relation between duty,
and the larger process of life.
Duties support the laws
that govern the universe.
If one does not support duties,
the universe does not function.
If you do not support duty and the laws
others have to support you.
Understanding oneself
helps to understand one's duties.
One has to perform duties without attachment,
preparing and purifying oneself
to function as an instrument of the Divine.
This way we do not get involved emotionally.

Condolence Messages
Dear Divine and Pujya Maa Hansaji,
Pujya Swamiji and Sadhvi Bhagawatiji send their deepest condolences and respects to you and your family on the physical loss of Dr Jayadeva Yogendraji, who is a true embodiment of the very essence of yoga. He has inspired such a great legacy of yoga and created the strong foundation for one of the world's most renowned and oldest yoga institution to grow and thrive touching and transforming the lives of millions with the power and the magic of yoga.
Yesterday in the divine Ganga Aarti we also observed a few minutes of silence in his honour and chanted a special prayer, "Itne Shakti Hame Dena Datta," to the divine to grant you and your family the power to feel, ever more strongly, his spiritual presence even admist his physical absence. We prayed that as his spirit merges with the ocean - the ultimate yoga- or union - the deep vibrations of peace, inherent oneness and harmony are felt by the whole world (a short video clip of the prayer is attached for your kind perusal).
As we were singing and chanting, during the divine Ganga Aarti yesterday, on the other side of Maa Ganga we could see a family performing their last rites. It just reminded us so beautifully of what Sadhvi Bhagawatiji shares so often that the flames of celebration on one side of the river and the flames of loss on the other side of the river may look as opposites but when we dive deep into the depths of the river both flames merge together and we can no longer tell the difference. Yoga helps us reach that depth and hence its so beautiful to know that in your divine family the loss of Dr Jayadevaji and the birth of Hrishiji and Pranee's young baby boy has merged together to keep the light of yoga burning for many, many more generations to come.
This is also as Pujya Swamiji says so beautifully, simply and profoundly that the Guru is never gone but the light and the love of the Guru is always, always ON. Similarly, the light and the great legacy of Dr Jayadevaji will continue to provide not only the teachings but the touch and the transformation of yoga to the generations to come through your divine and beautiful family.
In closing, please know that the Parmarth Parivar is always here for you and we sincerely look forward to welcoming you home and to honouring the spirit and the legacy of Dr Jayadevaji here on the sacred banks of Mother Ganga, in the lap of the Himalayas. If there is any way we can be of further service and support please let us know. Parmarth Niketan is your own home and you are all most, most welcome here at any time and we would be especially honoured to offer our deepest respects and shradhanjali to Dr Jayadevaji's divine spirit in any and every way we can, especially during your visit for the International Yoga Festival at Parmarth Niketan on the 7-8th March.
With love and gratitude from the banks of Mother Ganga,In reverence of life through service,
Parmarth Niketan, Rishikhesh

I met him multiple times during my visits to institute and clearly remember all his teachings. He was a true guru who instilled great knowledge in his students. He was such a careful listener and observer, he would listen to all your problems patiently and then write instructions on paper and give you. I still cherish his writings and those instructions papers with me safely and do go through them often.

It is difficult to sleep now here in Brazil. Heard that the greatest Yogi of the century my Guru Dr Jayadeva Yogendra has decided to join the supreme soul today. What to say... he was already in to Samadhi Bhav from last 4-5 years, just moved one step ahead and achieved Maha-Samadhi.
I feel him as he is more alive now than being with a body which is offered to Agni today in Mumbai. And I received a message on my whatsapp, which says - he heard the good news that his daughter in law Pranee Hrishi Ji has delivered a baby boy, he smiled, took his last breath and rested the body. Chris Miller sent the newspaper link announcing Dr. Jayadeva's passing. This is an historic moment. As with all passing of great souls, the essential task speaks once more to those of us who survive. The "task" here refers to the important and essential work of keeping Yoga alive.
Please convey our love to Hansa-ma, Mrs. Desai, and Hrishi. The ceremonies and memorials, no matter how simple or grand, will mark the universe and be felt by many. Most importantly, there are many who will keep Dr. Jayadeva's insights alive... the bhavas of aishvarya, vairagya, jnana, and dharma are paramount.

Dr Jayadeva Yogendra was a truly great and most humble soul who entreated his listeners to better their guru in saying, Dont try to be like your Guru. Try to be better than your Guru.
I still recall the words of his father, Shri Yogendraji, who told me during one of my many visits to the Institute, Jayadeva is the only real Yogi here. Though he faced many challenges and potential disappointments in his long life, he never deviated from the Yogic ideal. Always striving for Citta-Prasdanam(peaceful mind).
The thing that struck me most was his humility. There was no false affectation about being greater than you, nor better, nor even higher. Just like the rest of us, he was here to find the best in himself. We could feel a great deal of sadness at his passing; however, more importantly, and in the spirit of his teachings, we should feel an even greater sense of joy and relief that our paths crossed as we recall a life well lived. Moreover, he still remains with us because he managed to instill at least a little of himself into all who had the good fortune to witness his life and hear his teachings. What a great and saintly man we all had to guide us through our fettered lives.
A truly great man came and walked among us spreading good news and now is gone. There is no need for mourning his passing, no need to say, may he rest in peace because this man lived his whole life in peace he epitomised peace. We should simply rejoice in his life and relish what he passed on to us all because, in that way, he still remains.Love and respect,

My Mentor - Dr Jayadeva Yogendra
Around 18 years back an accident injured my left leg. This needed surgery involving bone grafting and steel implantation. This renders me 35 percent handicapped and caused depression. A friend brought me to Dr Jayadeva. I got drawn to him instantly. He told me, we will not touch your leg but train your mind. I attended 7 days Residential course which opened whole new world for me. Without me knowing, Guruji guided me to do all courses at The Yoga Institute. Depression was gone. One day, he gave me a small note, "What you want to do with your life 10 years from now ?" He had plans for me. I had no plans to be Yoga Teacher. But he guided me to be one. Yes, 16 years experience is enriching. He sculpted me out of raw rock ! In July 2007, he deputed me and my wife for training 850 students at Bannari Amma Institute of Technology, (BITS), Satyamangalam, Coimbatore for 10 days. On second day, I got sad news of death of my younger sister in North India. I was sad and confused. I followed Doctor Saheb's advice to sit in Sukhasan and watch breath. Within minutes, he came in my vision, did not utter anything but I got my direction ==Do my duty to complete the course. Was AMAZING experience ! After losing my father, I started looking to Doctor Saheb as my fatherly guide. On 16th MARCH 2018, I lost him and felt an Orphan, second time. He is not with me in form but he is with me in Spirit all the time. I am extremely grateful to God for bringing Dr Jayadeva in my life. Naman to dead Doctor Saheb ...

He was part of the history of Yoga in the world, helping to build a legacy initiated by his guru and father, Shri Yogendra ji with the foundation of the world's first yoga center, the centennial The Yoga Institute. Thank you immensely for the teachings of this great individual, who through his direct disciple, Pundit Radheshyam Mishra, passed us and passes the pure and authentic knowledge of Yoga. Our tradition says goodbye today of a great being, with a feeling of gratitude for everything we receive through it and also with the commitment to move forward in the same way and with the same respect and love this knowledge. Satyadhara Yoga Center is honored to be part of this family and this mission. We will always make all the effort necessary to help humanity through Yoga, as did dr. Jayadeva Yogendra in his life. Namaste.

Condolence Messages
Dear Hansa ji,
I just wanted to add my voice to what I am sure is a groundswell of deep respect and appreciation for a man who so many of us have looked up to as a true and genuine teacher. Dr. Jayadeva has touched so many in so many ways. Of all the decisions I have made in my life, going to India and meeting Dr. was the most important. Even more than getting married or having a family, his influence and teachings have served as the very foundation of everything I have done in life. Even after forty years so many words that he spoke and knowledge he imparted bubble up and provide direction and guidance. More than anything else, it was Doctors emphasis on Faith and applying Faith that has lit my way forward and sustained me.
Doctor always suggested that we find the Institute within us, and to a good extent that has happened as the years pass. Even 12 thousand miles away I have always felt Doctor close by when I needed him, and with his passing, I feel no further away. Being at the Institute during that special time many years ago was a rare gift and I feel extremely blessed for the experience. I remember all of you there with great fondness and I thank you for everything that you gave me while in your company.
I send my very best wishes to you and feel confident that the great work that has gone on at the Yoga Institute for a century, will carry on for decades to come. Classic Yoga is just what humanity needs. It provides the inspiration, direction, and certainty in an uncertain world.

Dearest Smt Hansaji
I heard over the weekend about Dr. Jayadeva's death and passing. I wanted to express my deepest condolences and send much love to you. Meeting Dr. Jayadeva (and yourself) first in Germany and then coming to Mumbai to stay with you in 1984 changed my life completely in all the right ways.
I've always felt that Dr. Jayadeva was a mix of a Spiritual Father and teacher/Guru to me who showed me the way to live, be and grow in spiritual awareness. For that, I am eternally grateful. With many best wishesIn Yoga

On 8/12/18 I met a friend and old
c o l l e a g u e s f r o m t h e Yo g a
Institute to do some work related
to an upcoming Yoga course. In such
meetings, it had become a sort of tradition
i n t h e g r o u p t o s h a r e ex p e r i e n c e s
regarding our individual interactions with
Dr. Jayadeva. We would share what we
had learned from his talks, his instructions
etc. and how all that is helping us in life and
in our growth. In this particular meeting,
my friend made a remarkable statement,
No matter what part or aspect of Yoga
sutra I am studying or reading, I find that
Dr. Jayadeva is already living it.
I readily agreed with him as I too felt the
same. I was reminded of what I said and
also wrote down when Mrs. Desai once
asked the question as to how I see Dr.
Jayadeva. Whenever I have thought about
Dr. and his life I have seen him a Living Yogi
who is established in Dharma Megha
Samadhi, which is a very advanced and
evolved stage of Yoga. Dharmamegha
Dhyan translated in English means a
virtue pouring cloud. The one who is
continuously in a state of Viveka Khyati
(discrimination between Purusha and
Prakriti) and Vairagya (disinterestedness)
towards even the highest knowledge and
power.
Dharmamegha Dhyan is a state where the
yogis mere existence or act of living itself
is beneficial to the world. And anyone
coming into contact with such a yogi would
be helped and uplifted. Dharmamegha
Dhyan is similar to the concept of
BodhiSatwa Avalokiteshvara one who
postpones his own liberation to help
others out of compassion. Dr. Jayadeva
lived his entire life helping others.
During my long association with him, I
never found that he had any personal
desire or objective to attain. Always and
essentially his purpose was to help others
through Yoga and The Yoga Institute.
Although himself immaculate and perfect,
he never criticized and judged anyone. Full
of compassion, Dr. Jayadeva accepted
everyone as they were and tried to help
them in all possible ways. The people
seeking help and guidance from Dr.
Jayadeva benefitted in many ways:
Improvement in physical and mental
health condition, overcoming sorrow and
pain, spiritual growth, strength and clarity
to carry on, improved social relationships
and even material wellbeing.

Very often, students that join Yoga come
for the purpose of health reasons, esp. to
overcome some chronic malady. In this
case it becomes important for the yoga
teacher to evaluate the yoga practices that
have been suggested, so as to be sure if its
on the right path.
Following are a few guidelines that can
help a yoga teacher for this purpose;
PA R A M E T E R S TO J U D G E I F T H E
THERAPY IS WORKING:
1) L a b o r a t o r y o r c l i n i c a l fi n d i n g s
whenever possible, (esp. when the
malady is of a continuous and longer
duration) are the ultimate parameters.
E.g. blood sugar levels in case of
diabetes.
2) Whenever the complaints are;
Intermittent (not continuous) or
S y m p t o m a t i c ( f o r e x a m p l e ,
H e a d a c h e s / m i g r a i n e , s i m p l e
backaches, restlessness, etc.). Here,
t h e s y m p t o m s a r e n o t a l w a y s
necessarily or easily correlated with
much laboratory findings and hence
need to be judged differently.
In such cases if the healer has to be
aware of three parameters (though
vague) those have to be compared
before and during the course of
therapy. These are;
1) Intensity of the problem: you could ask
the client to use a grade system (grading
from 0 to 10), to denote the severity of
complain and mention if s/he notices any
change in that.
2) Duration of the problem: certain
complaints, e.g. migraine/ allergic attacks
usually last for a particular duration,
ranging between few minutes to even
hours or days. Following therapy, there
could be a change in the duration of the
concerned complains which we need to
note.
3) Frequency of the problem: certain
complains occur either at a periodic
interval or are triggered by a particular
factor (particular food item, odour,
climate, etc.). A change in the frequency
could mean either a simple increase in the
interval between two complain attacks or
else, absence of the complaint in spite of
encountering the triggering factor.

Yoga Technique of the Month
Yoga is a perfect science and stitching
together the bhavas and asanas was a
benchmark innovation by Dr. Jayadeva.
The regular and repeated practice of Yoga
techniques with correct accompanying
'Bhava' slowly augments the subtle and
gross energies thereby the spiritual
experience is more meaningful. This is
q u i n t e s s e n t i a l n e e d t o r a i s e t h e
consciousness level of the Yoga learner.
The Yogic practices along with the Bhavas
o f D h a r m a , J n a n a , Va i r a g y a , a n d
Aishwarya leads to personality changes
both on the subtle and gross level. Hence,
expounding the applicability of the Bhavas
in Yoga and everyday life is an invaluable
contribution by Dr. Jayadeva.
Literally, the word 'Bhava' stands for
feeling or attitude. The conduits of Bhavas
lead to a deeper understanding of the
higher consciousness. In the context of
achieving the Yogic goal of 'moksha,'
bhavas play a central role. Every Yoga
teacher should understand Bhavas shape
the beliefs and promulgates the attitudinal
training and experiential learning aspects.
The four main bhavas have a meaningful
impact when we are doing our daily tasks
or teaching any Yoga related asana,
p ra n ay a m a o r k r i y a s ; t h i s i s w h a t
differentiates us from the mechanical
machines when they do work.
The Four Bhavas are -
Dharma Bhava (Duty)
Jnana Bhava (Knowledge)
Vairagya Bhava (Objectivity)
Aishwarya (Self-Reliance)
Dharma Bhava (Duty) - Sutra 1.2 of the
Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: "Yoga Chitta
Vritti Nirodha". Our highest duty Dharma
is to ourselves to be in a balanced state of
mind & to have faith. Maintaining balance
all the time in-spite of ups & downs in life is
our duty. We have to become aware of our
state of mind even while performing our
daily activities and to see to it, that we are
always in a positive state. In case, the state
g e t s d i s t u r b e d o u r fi r s t d u t y i s t o
immediately balance our mind by making
use of techniques of Yoga like simple
asanas, pranayamas, and meditation. With
such a balanced state of mind, you go on
about your doing your daily duties.
Jnana Bhava (Knowledge) Sutra 2.6 of
the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Drk-
Darsanasaktyoh-Ekatmata-Iva-Asmita
We should make it a habit to try and
understand things and gain knowledge
about any situation before taking action.
We should also learn from self-experience
as well as others' experience. In life, there
is either success because work was done
well or it is learning there is no such thing
as failure But it is observed that as
learning increases, the ego increases.
Thats why we should be cautious that
when I learn, it is my learning and when
others learn it is their learning. My truth;
your truth. Scope for ego going unchecked
is high; only through true knowledge one
can be free from suffering & pain.
Vairagya Bhava (Objectivity) Sutra 1.16
of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Tatparam
Purusakhyateh Gunavaitrshnyam We
should learn to be objective in life. We
should keep a little distance from any given
situation and learn to have a witness like
"attitude." We should learn to surrender to
a higher reality and learn to keep our ego
aside. All forward bending asana like Yoga
mudra, chakra asana, Paschimottanasana
help. (this line can be deleted as we havent
given examples for any other bhavas)
Aishwarya (Self-Reliance) Sutra 1.13 of
the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: Tatra sthitau
yatna abhysa Practice makes a man
perfect. When through constant practice
of Yoga perfection is achieved one will
n o t i c e a n i n c r e a s e i n w i l l p o w e r,
confidence, energy levels increase, and
t h i s b r i n g s i n t r e m e n d o u s j oy a n d
positivity in life. When Dharma, Jnana, and
Vairagya are followed, Aishwaraya Bhava
is the outcome.

Transformation through Yoga
a m e : M r s S a t h a y e ( N a m e
Nchanged)Age: 52 years old
Qualifications: MA (Master of Arts in
Philosophy); MPhil (Pune University) &
Yoga Graduate (The Yoga Institute)
Profession: Senior Yoga Teacher (working
with The Yoga Institute)
Health Issues: Chronic depression and
low self-esteem
Q: How did you learn about The Yoga
Institute?
A: My brother introduced me to The Yoga
Institute in 2006. I was in emotional pain
recovering from depression and had
completed my medication. Finally, decided
to opt for a healthy abiding solution to
overcome all my emotional and related
health problems. So with firm resolve and
faith joined special women Yoga class.
Back then, homely atmosphere at my
brothers place and love and care received
from them helped me recover. I decided to
become a Yoga teacher and joined their
TTC programme.
Q: State your present responsibilities and
ailment
A: I am 52 years old, my illness progressed
slowly post marriage. Initial marital years
were good, but slowly the constant
scrutiny and caustic remarks due to
verbally abusive in-laws and spouse
eroded my confidence and happiness. I
was well-qualified but due to constant nit-
picking and frequents verbal spats, the
atmosphere at my husbands home was
unfavourable. It was becoming very
difficult to be calm, active, focused and
happy. I was developing unexplained
physical symptoms and losing all hope. I
was in agony and finally when my brother
took me to The Yoga Institute, and I met
Smt. Hansaji and Dr Jayadeva Yogendra, I
got hope back into my life. I felt the divinity
in their presence every time I met them.
When I first laid eyes on Smt. Hansaji, her
presence, charm, confidence and ability to
gauge my situation gave me hope. I am in
much debt to them for they provided me
with a safe haven in my desperate hour of
need.
Q: Family history of the disease, please
share the particulars?
A: None.
Q: How have you benefited from Yoga and
The Yoga Institute (TYI)?
A: Yoga path taught at TYI helped me
immensely back in 2006. Just a few
months into the Yoga class and I got my
physical strength up. I felt relief from
internal and external pain. Years of marital
abuse and neglect had left me beaten and
broken.
Yoga teachers were caring and attentive.
They gave me a lot of guidance and
knowledge about taking proper diet and
doing my simplified Yoga asanas practice
e v e r y d a y. R e l a x a t i o n p o s e s a n d
meditation techniques help to tune within.
Yoga asanas completely relax the whole
body, release stored stress, fatigue, and
tension. I like doing Makarasana. I have 'a
new lease of life' and found my confidence.
AVAV (Ahar, Vihar, Achar and Vichar) four
fundamentals taught here laid the
foundation, and my symptoms improved
immensely.
I felt energetic and alive with vigour
t h r o u g h o u t t h e d a y. I j o i n e d T TC
programme and started working with the
Dignity Foundation. After Yoga, my
perspective towards life had changed. It
was a monumental achievement for me.
Today, I am in a position of respect and
taking care of 35 women and training them
in Yoga and self-reliance.
I continue my Yoga journey with the
Institute and am eternally grateful to Yoga
Guru Smt. Hansaji for being my saviour.

Transferal touchstone of faith and
humility-Dr. Jayadeva
Before coming to the Institute, I was a non-
believer. I used to debate the existence of a
Higher Reality with Dr. Jayadeva. He
would listen patiently to whatever I had to
say. When I saw that Dr. Jayadeva was a
solid example of what he was preaching,
transformation began to occur. All this
happened subtly. Gradually, I developed
faith, which became stronger. His idea of
starting with a working faith, and then
transcending to absolute faith worked for
me. I now firmly believe that there is a
Higher Reality. Whatever happens, it does
so for the best. We may not realize it at
that time, but later we realize everything
happens for our own good.
Dr. Jayadevas calmness pervades the
environment of the Institute. I have never
seen him getting angry, upset or losing his
balanced state of mind. Observing this
living example of peace, we too start
adopting a similar behavior.

Our lives have been blessed by the
presence of the Yogendras.
Dr.Jayadeva epitomised the following
words of his.
"What may appear ordinary and simple,
acquires greater significance when set in
contrast to complicated and meaningless
objects around. Simple qualities like
purity, understanding, humility etc. may
appear colourless to men of the world, but
w h e n c o n t r a s t e d t o w i c k e d a n d
dehumanising qualities in evidence all
around us, the simple virtues assume a
divine glow.
While working on The Call Of Yoga The
Life and Mission of Dr. Jayadeva Yogendra
and Hansaji Yogendra.
A simple incident shows how he practised
Ahimsa. It was in the days before the
computers. We used to correspond on
inland letters and aerogrammes. The
young secretary wrote to and Indian in
India and on an aerogrammes instead of
the inland letter. She took the typed
aerogramme to Dr. Jayadeva for his
singature. He noticed the error and said
that the aerogramme costed much more.
The secretary immediately recognized
her mistake. She started crying and came
to the other office. In a few moments Dr.
Jayadeva came to the other office and said
very kindly "Don't worry." He had felt that
hinsa had been caused and came to
assuage the pain.
All of us in the office felt the greatness of
this noble soul who practised what he
preached.

Tribute Dr. Jayadeva- The Last Yogi
During my 6 month residential stay at The
Yoga Institute in 1989, I had the honor of
spending time with Shri Yogendra as he
neared the end of his earthly life. Dr.
Jayadeva and Hansaji were the primary
instructors at that time. Three months
later, I witnessed Dr. Jayadeva handle the
passing of his Father who was 93 years old.
Those of us living onsite thought that
classes would be canceled for at least a
week, but the same day Dr. Jayadeva
showed up to lead the evening Teacher
Training program. Dr. Jayadeva shared
how his Fathers wish was that he carry on
The Yoga Institute and help humanity heal,
grow and thrive. Upon hearing of Dr.
Jayadevas passing, I shared this story with
our Training group and we carried forth as
Dr. Jayadeva demonstrated so effortlessly.
May we all, to the best of our ability, carry
forth the teachings that help us find as Dr.

outer positivity.

My GuruDr. Jayadevaji
For sure, Dr. Jayadevaji probably had the
most profound impact in my life
shaping my approach to meeting the
challenges in my career and my personal
relationships. Like many of my fellow
students in The Yoga Institute, I too
knocked on the doors of the Institute when
I had little understanding of what I wanted
from this life.
In my brief association with Doctor saheb
in the mid 80s, I gained clarity and better
understanding of what I ought to be
doing. The change in me was neither
instantaneous nor dramatic but happened
without me realising how he helped me
chip away the unwanted and cultivate
what was good for me. His discourses
revealed hidden treasures which I keep
discovering in my journey. In time I realised
that all the copious notes I took in his class
were useless if I were to not implement it
and practice it as a way of life. His
practical wisdom, simplified complex life
problems and I would leave the gates of
the Institute brimming with confidence
and positivity.
Our Guru may not be in our midst today,
but his teachings will continue to inspire us
for the rest of our lives. The best tribute we
can ever pay is to walk the path he has

recognize the immense power of his
words. The only thing somewhere deep
down I knew his words had the power to
bring about an inner transformation.
Once a senior teacher and I were talking
and on seeing Dr. Jayadeva approaching, I
blurted that we were discussing the Yoga
Sutras. He merely looked up and said,
practice! I was totally put in place and till
today, each day I carry two words of my
Guru as a religious duty in my daily life
practice and let-go which in every way
have transformed my every thought.

Architect of My Life
In the past, on reflection, I realised that my
life has been ordinary, just like millions of
Indians living elsewhere. I have not had
any exceptional achievements to my
credit, nor am I known beyond my
immediate circle. As maturity developed, I
looked around and found too much of pain
andsuffering even within those, who I
thought were very successful! Then came
the conviction, it wasnt your external
achievements, but internal peace. If there
was one individual to whom I attribute this
change in thinking, it was none other than
Dr. Jayadeva.
While stepping into the Institute for the
first time, I was messed up both inside and
outside. With serious health issues, which
caused too much of pain, I was like a baby
seeking help. Dr Saheb undertook the task
of breaking the old mould, without hurting
me, and remaking a new mould. He did that
for countless others!
For all the greatness he had, he was still
available and cared for all. When I had
difficulty handling some Samatvam
visitors, he simply handled them in my
presence, till I became strong enough to do
it on my own. Now there is clarity. My
ordinary life has been a very meaningful
life. He hasbeen the architect of this
meaningful life for many. He was simply
the most underrated man, who walked this
earth! How do you pay homage to such a
giant, except to bow down and try and
follow his path?!

Dr. Saheb

interaction with Dr. Jayadeva. However
whatever time I have spent in his presence,
I have always learnt something or other for
sure. During my 7 month teacher training
course, he had said that as soon as we wake
up, we must take Gods name the first thing
in morning. To this, some students
ridiculed saying it isnt a big deal. Dr. Sahab
responded that it may not be a big deal but
one should do this daily without any
distraction and interruption. When done
in this manner for 6 months regularly, then
one is able to implement some form of
discipline in his life. If one is able to attempt
and succeed in doing this, then he will be
able to do anything in his life. As Maharishi
Patanjalis first yogasutra states, Atha
yoga anushasanam.
Yoga is based on four pillars, Ahar, Vihar,
Achar, Vichar. Dr. Jayadevas teachings
would always be based on these four
pillars. Be it small or big, he paid attention
to all the details and was always actively
involved in the working of the Institute. I
still recollect how he would always ring the
bell to announce Parisamwad. Be it
operating the water pump to closing the
gates of the Institute at8 pm, he would
perform his duties without depending on
anybody.
He spoke very precise and to the point, but
delivering an impactful message. I
consider myself blessed and fortunate to
have been able to learn from him,
whatever I could.

YOGASATTVA
I slip in like a dew drop, but like a storm I go.- Dr Jayadeva Yogendra
Dr Jayadeva Yogendra
A True Yogi
Devoted Yogic Bond-Shri Yogendraji on Dr. Jayadeva
Often we underestimate the power of a genuine
smile, a kind word, an empathetic ear, an honest
compliment, the subtle act of caring, and that colossal
potential to turn a life around befittingly describes Dr.
Jayadevas personality!
Fathers pride and joy- Dr. Jayadevas childhood was
innately Yogic. His birth, childhood, dreams were
destined to uphold the values instilled by his father
Shri Yogendraji. The karmic bond was strong and
every wish the father had; was a command for Dr.
Jayadeva. Honest and obedient, he completed every
task his father gave with diligence. He wanted to
make medicine his choice vocation but his father
suggested Sanskrit and Philosophy, and he took to the
path mentioned without any misgivings.
Shri Yogendraji taught Dr. Jayadeva everything he
knew about Yoga. Dr. Jayadeva was a hardworking
student, and both father cum teacher watched him in
awe. Shri Yogendraji could not help but feel fulfilled
with joy on many occasions he observed and
mentioned: Jayadeva never gets angry, he is a true
yogi!
Once, a tedious task of carrying heavy anvil was given
by his father. Dr. Jayadeva did not ask any questions
and carried the load without any assistance and while
carrying out the work he was injured by a nail, but he
continued without any complaints. His bloody
footprint gave away his injury yet he was unmoved,
and founder said-He does not get hungry, thirsty,
does not ask anything and he is beyond and above
body pain; surely blessed with a divine yogic son!
