Dear Christian Friends,

This letter is written with the thought of summer being fully in gear. There are many things going on with vacations and celebrations to name just a few.

Preaching wise I have made it a practice the last several summers to do things a little outside the box. What comes to mind is from my personal growth, study and preaching, I have found the Old Testament to be pretty interesting! I have used the summer to preach from the Old Testament. I am thankful that the Holy Spirit keeps revealing and teaching things to me.

With that in mind (outside the box) beginning on July 16th and running through August 27th. we will begin a series entitled, Do You Have Alligator Arms?...Embracing Life, Hope, and God. Having alligator arms was a football term that applied to a would-be receiver who kept their arms protectively and timidly in close to their ribs instead of stretching out full length because they sensed a tackler bearing down on them and was more interested in protecting them self from a hard hit than catching the ball.

This term also applies to all of life too. We have a tendency to timidly, fearfully hold back rather than reach out to embrace life. In the process of this protection we miss out on what God has for us. We will explore what it is to let go of that fear and reach out and wrap our arms around life, hope, and God.

See you in church,

Pastor Tim

Toddler Nursery Helpers Needed

Do to the increased number of “toddlers” coming to the nursery each Sunday. We have made a change.

We will be adding additional caregivers each Sunday to be in the Nursery. If anyone would be interested in

helping out please contact Bev or the church office. We will have a caregiver and one helper each Sunday

along with the student helpers. My plan is to have 2 adults if possible and one or two youth helpers each

Sunday. If you like to be part of this growing area, please let me know.

Each family who brings a child to the Nursery will receive a “number”, this number will be their child’s or

family number. This number will be used in case the staff need to ask the parents to return to the nursery.

The “number” will show up on the right side of the sanctuary if the parents are needed to return to the

toddler nursery. If any parents have any questions or your child is coming to the nursery and you haven’t

received your “number” please see Bev or contact the church office and I will help

STAYING CONNECTED

SHARING OUR GIFTS AND TALENTS

If you didn’t fill out a “sharing our Gifts and Talents” form, they can be found on the table in the Narthex. The education team is in

the process of looking at curriculum for the fall. We will be looking for teachers, helpers and care givers in the nursery. Have you

ever thought of leading an adult, children and adult Sunday School class? Do you have the gift for music or like to decorate, or

like to fix things and are willing to help and share your gifts. Please take time to look at the form, is there something you enjoy

doing……complete the form and drop it in the basket as you leave this morning.

Take the form home, think about how you could share your gift with the church and bring back the completed form next Sunday.

The education team have started preparing for the fall. We are looking for teachers and helpers for the Sunday School Classes

for both adults and the children and youth. We have tentatively set up several classes and would like to begin recruiting.

Would anyone one be interested in helping or being part of the education team for 2017-2018?

Children’s Bible Story

His Eye Is on the Sparrow

Theme: God watches over his children. Proper 7 (12) Year A

Scripture: "What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows." Matthew 10:29, 31 (NLT)

Are you ever afraid? Do you ever worry? Are you ever discouraged? What are some things that discourage you? Here are some things that might cause worry, fear or discouragement:

• Loneliness • Feeling neglected • Feeling that you don't have any friends • Failure in school or other activities • Illness or injury • Criticism from others

Today I want to tell you a story about a woman named Civilla Martin who wrote a song about overcoming fear, worry, and discouragement. Mrs. Martin and her husband were visiting a couple named Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle who lived in Elmira, New York. Mr. Doolittle was crippled and had to move about a wheelchair. Mrs. Doolittle had been confined to bed for over twenty years. Despite the problems they faced in life, they always seemed to be have a cheerful outlook on life. Mr. Martin asked Mrs. Doolittle, "How do you manage to remain so joyful when you face so many problems?" Mrs. Doolittle's reply was simple. "If God has his eye on the sparrow, then I know he is watching over me."

Mrs. Martin was so touched by Mrs. Doolittle's reply that she wrote a poem that was to become the basis for a song that has brought peace and comfort to people for over a hundred years.

“Why should I feel discouraged? Why should the shadows come? Why should my heart feel lonely, and long for heaven and home? When Jesus is my portion, a constant friend is He. His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches over me. His eye is on the sparrow; and I know He watches me. I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m free! His eye is on the sparrow; and I know He watches me. His eye is on the sparrow; and I know He watches me.”

The next day Civilla Martin mailed the poem to Charles Gabriel, a gospel songwriter, who wrote a tune for it. "The rest," as they say, "is history."

The truth of the message of the song, "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" is found in our Bible lesson for today. In Matthew chapter 10, Jesus was teaching his disciples that even though they were going to be facing some difficult times as his followers, they should not be afraid. He said to them, "Two sparrows are sold for one copper coin, but not one single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. So don't be afraid, you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows."

Isn't that amazing? God knows everything that we go through. Nothing that happens to us that he doesn't know about. When we feel lonely and totally abandoned, when it seems that our prayers are unanswered, when everything seems hopeless, God knows and God cares.

Father, we know that your eye is on the sparrow, and we know that you are watching over us. In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

"His Eye Is on the Sparrow"
