Twenty-Five. It represents a silver anniversary or important birthday, the date we remember the ANZACs, or even the number on our front door. It signifies a quarter,

starting out but not quite half way, and the tram stop we alight at for the Melbourne Zoo. It can be explored in many ways and continuously interpreted uniqurely, but for each of

us it holds a special meaning on its own.

Divulge into the world of 25.

1990

1990: a year that brought us the World Wide Web, Edward Scissorhands, and those incessant Furby characters. When the clock hit midnight on January 1st all those years ago, it was time to throw away your shoulder pads and sip champagne in celebration of a new

decade. The nineties.

Now, 25 years on, we’re looking at the babies born within those 365 days to see where their lives have taken them. XXV talked to Elle Young, a medical receptionist and modern day woman of the world to discuss what it’s like to turn 25 and how she thinks the world has

changed from the day she was born.

XXV: Welcome to 25, how does it feel?Elle: Great actually. I’m looking forward to what this year has lined up for me although I feel like I’m expected to be some kind of ‘real adult’ now. Being a quarter of a century old, I guess you’ve got to grow up at some point!X: Not necessarily, what do you miss about being younger that you couldn’t do now?E: I wouldn’t say it’s anything in particular, or that I couldn’t do certain things now, it’s more the general frivolity of youth. Of course I’ve still got a lot to give the world and don’t think about settling down to have children or buying a house just yet but it’s definitely something coming into my frame of vision as a social pressure due to my age.X: That’s interesting. What do you think life would have been like for a 25-year-old woman when you were born?E: I think for women it was a time of empowerment! Look at the optimism and extravagance of the 80s, I feel that snowballed well into the 90s and we’re getting a new wave of women now too. We’re living in an exciting time, especially technology wise, but it’s funny how the same social pressures remain. Even with the power of the 80s, it would have been the same

for my 90s sisters: marriage and saving for that big home. I wish I had been able to experience adult life in 1990 but I’m happy to be part of this new generation of doing things differently.X: And in your 25 years would you do many things differently?E: I’ve thought about this before and I think the answer is no. Everything happens for a reason!X: So how did you celebrate your birthday this year and what do the next 25 years hold for Elle?E: The way in which all respecting adults do – lots of cake and balloons, of course! I may be expected to act like an adult but that doesn’t mean I will. As for the next 25 years, who knows! I feel lucky that being 25 in 2015 means the world is my oyster. I’d love to begin a career in scriptwriting and I’m excited to go back to school to study that, but apart from that I just want happiness and health. Is that too much to ask for at 50? We’ll have to see.

The tram is an icon of Melbourne. It takes commuters from A to B and is always a reliable way to get around the buzzing city and maybe even people-watch as you go. But if you alight at

stop 25 you may encounter something more than just people. Creatures roam their cages by day, circling their small worlds around and around. They see the patrons come and go and at night, they may dream of what it’s like to ride the tram themself. Free at last. Follow their

journey from day to night.
