The water cycle

The water cycle is very much to do with other weather. Its is also the reason we have rain, sunshine, fresh water and air. The water cycle is a cycle which is always in motion and never stops.

DID YOU KNOW ?If water wasn’t a renewable resource earth would run out of fresh water in a month.

The earth has a limited amount of water. That water keeps going around and around and around and around and (well, you get the idea) in what we call the"Water Cycle". The water cycle is earth’s way of recycling water. It describes the journey water takes as it constantly passes between the atmosphere, the oceans and the land.

• There are four stages to the water cycle these four stages are all equally important to the cycle, the four stages include :

• Evaporation • Condensation• Percipitation• Run off/ See-page

Evaporation

• Evaporation is when the sun heats up water in rivers or lakes or the ocean and turns it into vapour or steam. The water vapour or steam leaves the river, lake or ocean and goes into the air.

Condensation

• Condensation water vapour in the air gets cold and changes back into liquid(tiny droplets), forming clouds. This is called condensation.

Precipitation

• Precipitation occurs when so much water has condensed that the air cannot hold it anymore. The clouds get heavy and water falls back to the earth in the form of rain, hail, sleet or snow.

Run-off / Seepage

• Run-off : Water moves downhill and across the land (on the surface or by rivers and streams) to return to the sea.

• See-page : some water seeps into the ground, where it is stored in the rocks and in the soil.

When the water ends up on land, it will either soak into the earth and become part of the “ground water” that plants and animals use to drink or it may run over the soil and collect in the oceans, lakes or rivers where the cycle starts

all over again.

The water cycle• Clouds are also linked

with the water cycle mostly because they help to make the cycle work there are mainly three different types of clouds:• Cirrus• Cumulus • Stratus

• Clouds are grouped according to their shape and height at which they occur. The darker the colour of the cloud, the more likely it is that precipitation is about to occur.

Cirrus

• Cirrus clouds are wispy like a lock of hair.• They occur at high

altitude.• The are made of ice

crystals.• They are associated with

fair weather.

Cumulus

• Cumulus clouds are fluffy or woolly in appearance.• They accrue at medium

altitude.• They are also know as

fair weather clouds.• They can bring rain if

they darken in colour.

• Stratus clouds occur at low altitude.• They form thin layers

and can block out the sun.• If they reach ground

level they are called fog.• The bring continual

drizzle and light rain
