They Call Me CoachSubmitted By: Coach Lilly

John Wooden, maybe the all time greatest college basketball coach, wrote a book by the same name. I have admired Coach Wooden and many other mentors from my coaching past, and the lessons they taught me. bikes to. That included a lot of time at the sandlot fields or at playgrounds without adults to organize things for us. They stressed the importance of family. We spent a lot of time at my grandparents’ house, especially on Sundays, and developed close ties with aunts, uncles and cousins. They made sure that faith was at the core of all we knew. Mass was not an option – it was an expectation. Our “mile-stone” sacraments (first communion and confirmation) were celebrated by the entire extended family. We said the rosary together. They insisted that we respected authority and that we respected adults. There were conse-quences if we didn’t. We were expect-ed to complete chores without arguing or negotiation. They said things that made us roll our eyes – “As long as you live under my roof,” etc. Most of all, they made us accountable. We were responsible for our behavior, our grades, our successes and our failures. Important lessons indeed.

We live in a different time today and we parent in a world that is quite differ-ent from the one our parents did. Yet the question I consider often is wheth-er the recipe our parents used can’t be effective in today’s world or whether we are simply led to believe it can’t be.

I have to say that I resent the media’s and the psychologist’s/sociologist’s generalization that our current gen-eration of parents is soft. That we hover over our children, attempting to prevent any and all unpleasant expe-riences. That we attempt to rescue them from all emotional discomfort. That we spoil them with possessions. That we organize everything for them to the point of exhausting them and us. That we require little from them in

the way of responsibility – at home and elsewhere. That our lack of commit-ment to faith is creating a generation of lost souls.

I do believe that we are in a very complex and changing world. But I also believe the core practices of our parents are still effective today. As principal, I have seen the results of that kind of parenting in our young people – parenting that isn’t about controlling our children or letting them do whatever they want or giving them whatever they want. It is about loving them hard and guiding them gently. That love and guidance is needed now more than ever in a world that chal-lenges them with media, technology, substances and the call to adult experi-ences at earlier and earlier ages. And that love and guidance can be found in the models that our parents provided to us.

I challenge all of us to continue to par-ent our children with the core values our own parents instilled in us. And I challenge us to focus on spiritual parenting by living an active faith life, praying with and for our children, and demonstrating respect for all.

For all of us, I pray for strength and I pray for guidance that we become parents who put God first. Parents who, above all else, love their children. Parents who show respect for their chil-dren and demand respect from them. Parents whose actions are louder than their words. Parents who spend quality time – not just watching but interacting with their children.

And let us all remember that God has given us this awesome responsibility to take care of his most precious gifts.

If your son or daughter still has details to be worked out, has problems that have surfaced, or is con-fused, please encourage them to see us for assistance. With numerous op-portunities and the flood of information it is often reassuring to discuss options not only with parents, but also with a counselor. Stop by the guidance office anytime if you have questions.

Sophomore Guidance Classes Sophomore Guidance is underway and the focus this year is on career explora-tion. Sophomores will be completing a self-assessment (to understand their own work values), completing an interest inventory, comparing careers, and exploring programs and majors. During Sophomore Guidance they also will be given information to help answer questions like the following: Why should I think about college? What should I study in college? What high school courses do I need to get into college?

Senior Economics students Colby Trace, Alex Tietz, David Kirpes, and Grant Hunt (pictured below) won the Iowa Championship in the National Economics Challenge at U.N.I. on March 13, and Xavier placed the top 5 teams in the State! Iowa Runner-Up team: James Krouse, Noah Hagen, Daniel Pape, and Chris Williams. James Krouse and Noah Hagen earned the highest written scores within any team, with James earning an elite perfect score on the macroeconom-ics test. Every Xavier team member contributed to Xavier’s State Cham-pionship by earning 5 of the 6 state qualifying positions!

dan Ratz, John Richardson, Elizabeth Riehle, Zach Schowalter, Rob Thinnes, and Carolina VonKampen. All teams are coached by Xavier Economics teacher, Mrs. Donna Winter.

before me in my life. Anyway I just like being called Coach. I find it respectful and a compliment when the students at Xavier call me coach. A coach is a teach-er, leader, and mentor. They have impact on others, and that is what I strive to do at Xavier. Even though some call me Mr. Lilly, that belongs to my dad. His shoes are too big for me to fill.

I truly believe that Xavier was my des-tiny. My mother and father knew that Catholic education was always going to be a part of their children’s lives. St. Matthew’s Parish is where it all began, grades 1-8. No hesitation when it came time to attend Regis High School. I was married at St. Matthews, sent my two boys to St. Matthew’s , Regis Middle school and now Xavier (again, no hesita-

tion). Coaching your own children about faith is easier when they are surrounded by strong prayer and a faith filled day.

Where else can you attend Mass, pray daily, hear speakers on topics such as abortion and poverty, and learn about your Catholic faith?

I spent 18 years working with troubled families and children at Tanager Place, still coaching as many sports as I could at Regis and Xavier. I was always hop-ing for the day when a job opportunity would present itself. Finally former Xavier principal Jeff Henderson made that call. Oh Happy day!! Some days I have to pinch myself, “I get paid for being here!” Don’t get me wrong, some days it takes on the impression of a job. But really it is a vocation, a calling, and I have not forgotten what a wonderful opportunity I have been given to continue the work my mom and dad felt so important, that of Catholic education. It’s what I’ve been coached to do.

Update from Campus Ministry

Catholic Evangelization Outreach

The topic for the next CEO event is "From Mediocrity to Mission for the Lord!"

Kim Smith, a lifelong Catholic who was transformed through an experience of

God at a non-Catholic bible study, will tell her story of conversion to God and a

strenthening of her Catholic faith. Come and hear Kim describe how she went

from a nominal Catholic simply going through the motions, to a loving and serv-

ing relationship with Jesus Christ. The presentation will be held on April 16 at

7:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. All are

invited and there is no charge. A light snack will be served.

The final Kairos retreat weekend of the school year will be held for our juniors at American Martyrs Retreat House in Cedar Falls April 18-21. Please pray for our student and adult teams as they lead our juniors in deepening their relationship with Christ.

The Day of the Rosary will be held on Friday May 16. Theology classes will be praying the rosary throughout the day in the Xavier chapel. The Xavier com-munity is invited to join us as we pray the rosary honoring Mary during the month of May.

There are two remaining Teens En-counter Christ (TEC) retreats one at Calmar April 6-8 and the other at Wahlert High School in Dubuque April 27-29. Seniors who have not attended a TEC Retreat are strongly encouraged to attend this wonderful retreat oppor-tunity.

The junior class will participate in the Junior Service Retreat on April 12th. Seniors Michaela Powell and Liz Tursi assisted in the organization of the retreat as part of their Ministry and Service class this semester. The retreat will begin with Mass at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton celebrated by Father Dustin Vu. Students will serve at local parishes, Horizon, Metro Catholic Outreach, Habitat for Humanity, Young Parents Network, Families Helping Families, Matthew 25, and other charity sites throughout the Cedar Rapids commu-nity.

If you have a situation that you feel is desperate or impossible, pray to St. Rita for assistance. Many mir-acles have been attributed to her intercession.

St. Rita wanted to give her life to Christ at an early age and join the Augustinian convent in Cascia. However, she was obe-dient to her elderly parents who arranged for her to be married at the age of 12. Her husband, Paola, was an unfortunate choice for a husband. Though she bore him two sons, there was little happiness in their marriage. Rita endured his violent temper and unfaithfulness for 18 years, praying ceaselessly for his conversion. Shortly before he was murdered in a political as-sassination, Paola repented and begged Rita’s forgiveness for all of the ways he had mistreated her. Unfortunately, their two sons sought to avenge their father’s death. Rita prayed that God would take her sons before they committed murder. Her prayers were answered as both sons succumbed to illness, and died in the state of grace. Rita’s difficulties were not over. She longed to join the Augustinian order of nuns but was refused because she had been married. Again, God answered her prayers by opening the bolted gates for her and unlocking the doors of the con-vent. Rita was found praying in the con-vent chapel, much to the amazement of the Mother Superior. Her mystical entrance was regarded as a divine sign that is was God’s will that she become a nun!

St. Rita wanted to share in the suffering of Christ. A wound developed on her fore-head, as of a thorn from Christ’s crown. The sight and odor of this wound was so offensive that she was forced to live in se-clusion until her death at the age of 76. St. Rita’s incorrupt body can be viewed to this day in St. Rita’s Basilica in Cascia, Italy.

If you have a situation that you feel is desperate or impossible, pray to St. Rita for assistance. Many miracles have been attributed to her intercession. This wife, mother, widow, nun and great saint inspires us in our holy journey of “learn-ing today, leading tomorrow and serving forever.” St. Rita of Cascia, please pray for us!

Krista Johnson Named Volleyball Coach Krista Johnson has been named volley-ball coach at Xavier High School.

Johnson is an assistant coach at Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. She has been at Northern State the last two seasons. Before that she was an assistant coach at Mount Mercy University from 2006 through 2010.

Johnson played college volleyball at the University of Missouri-Columbia and graduated from there in 2002.

Johnson is a Cedar Rapids native and was a standout prep player for Jeffer-son.

“We are excited to welcome Krista to the Xavier family,“ Winker said. “Krista has an excellent background in vol-leyball as both a player and coach. I believe Krista is ready to lead her own program as a head coach and will continue to build on the success of the volleyball program here at Xavier.”

Johnson succeeds Barb Sullivan, who resigned earlier this year after leading Xavier to three state tournament ap-pearances in the last four seasons.

Caffeine is believed to be the most widely used drug in the world. It is a drug that is naturally produced in the leaves and seeds of many plants and also artificially and added to certain foods and drinks.

Caffeine is defined as a drug because it is classified as an analeptic, a kind of stimulant. Caffeine stimu-lates the central nervous system causing increased alertness, and gives most people a temporary energy boost and mood elevation.

Experts consider 200-300 mg of caffeine a day to be a moderate amount for adults, but consuming as little as 100 mg of caffeine a day can lead a person to become dependent on caffeine. Most kids who find themselves depending on caffeine to “get going” everyday will experience with-drawal symptoms if they don’t get their caffeine on a certain day. These include headaches, fatigue, mood swings, and difficulty concentrating. Therefore, teens should limit caffeine consumption to no more than 100 mg of caffeine daily.

Here are a few common energy and caffeinated drinks with their caffeine content:

While teens claim that the drinks give them a quick boost, they often don’t know how much caffeine they’re consuming. Energy drinks target teens with their advertising and it appears to be working as 1/3 of teens report they consume energy drinks according to a report by the Washington Post. Many energy drinks and caffeinated drinks contain high amounts of sugar also which contributes to the quick burst of energy.

The caffeine you take goes to work in your body within 15-45 minutes. Depend-ing on how much caffeine they’ve had, its effect can last from 2 ½ hours to 7 ½ hours. You won’t feel its effects after that, but it can take up to 30 hours for your body to get rid of it.

Caffeine is a diuretic, meaning it causes a person to urinate more. It is not certain that it causes dehydration, but if participating in sports and using it as a replace-ment to water, then the risk for complications becomes higher. Caffeine can increase heart rate and blood pressure and cause nervousness, anxiety, insomnia, heart rhythm problems and potentially a heart attack or stroke. Caffeine may also cause the body to lose calcium that can lead to bone loss over time. It may also interact with some medications and supplements.

So even though caffeine is legal, people should be aware of its downside. And from personal experience in the health clinic, there is a downside that kids are not comfortable with when they take too much caffeine—especially during finals week. Corridor Jazz Project The Corridor Jazz Project is a partner-ship with KCCK, area jazz artists and jazz bands at each high school in the corri-dor. KCCK sponsors a jazz artist to work with each group and record a tune with that artist. This culminates in a concert in which every jazz band in the corridor performs a piece on their own and then the one with the guest artist. This year, Xavier was lucky to work with Steve Shanley, Assistant Professor of Music at Coe College.

Xavier's own Lucy Liu was the winner of the CD cover art contest. This CD will be available for purchase in the Business Office at Xavier. Xavier will receive the proceeds for CD's sold here. They will be for sale in the business office following the concert. Thanks for supporting the Xavier Jazz Ensemble!
