FROM THE RECTOR Dear Parents and Guardians I hope you had a most joyful Easter and that you are very much enjoying the blessing of this Easter Season. One of the great joys of the Easter season is that we have the opportunity to reflect and pray upon the early Christians’ experience of the risen Jesus. The Gospels tell us about Jesus appearing to the frightened disciples gathered in the upper room, to Mary Magdalene in the garden, to the disciples on the road to Emmaus, to a doubting Thomas and to the disciples on the shore of the Sea of Tiberias where Jesus asks Peter three times whether he loves him and commissions him three times to feed my sheep. My favourite resurrection story comes from John 20 where Jesus appears to the disciples and extends the greeting to them of “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you”. This is the Gospel passage that was proclaimed the day I was ordained a priest in 2007. This encouraging greeting of Jesus appealed to me deeply because a fundamental part of our vocation as Christians is to give witness to the resurrection of Jesus. The way in which each of us will do this will be different flowing from our own experience, gifts and talents. Hopefully, our experience of the love and peace of the risen Jesus will set our hearts on fire like it did for those disciples on the road to Emmaus. We are not likely to be able work the signs and wonders of the early apostles, and we may even have great doubts like Thomas, but having periods of doubt and struggling to believe is part of the journey of faith. Thomas understandably struggles to believe what his friends tell him; after all, we make a rather bold claim—that Jesus who was crucified with nails in his hands and pierced on his side, then buried in a garden tomb is now alive, risen from the dead. To believe this takes faith as not one of us is able to prove the resurrection in an empirical manner. The Letter to the Hebrews (11:1) tells us that “faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”. I suspect many of us have had periods of doubt in our lives similar to Thomas, especially when we are confronted by suffering or evil within our world. At other times, doubt can arise from a sense of the absence of God in our lives. We are told towards the end of John’s Gospel (20:30-31) that it was written so that we may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and that believing this we may have life through his name. The story of Thomas provides encouragement for each of us as Jesus says to Thomas, “You believe because you can see me, happy are those who have not seen and yet believe”. The story of Thomas was written to encourage those within the Johannine community who had not had the personal experience of the risen Jesus, and so it continues to speak to us nearly 2000 years later. As we begin this new term, I pray that you and your families may be strengthened in faith as you experience the healing peace of the risen Jesus. FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents and Guardians Welcome to the new school term. I am very pleased to see the wonderful activity taking place across the three campuses. The holidays offer a valuable opportunity to take stock of our experiences. Time for reflection is always valuable. Saint Ignatius was constantly calling on us to reflect on our experiences and be drawn to action and to seek God in all things.

Our theme for the year of 'setting hearts on fire' has focused our school community on the importance of striving for academic, spiritual, social, aesthetic and physical opportunities to seek excellence. In the coming weeks we have a number of very important school-wide events. The Xavier and Old Patricians’ Anzac Day service will take place on Sunday 28 April in the Memorial Chapel. This is always a poignant commemoration of former students who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for the defence of our country.

The first Saturday in May is a special day at Xavier when we hold the 62nd Maytime Fair to raise funds for Jesuit Mission worldwide. Please come and enjoy Xavier at its best; when it is being of service, hospitality, welcome and generosity to others.

The beginning of the Winter sports season also brings much anticipation, enthusiasm and excitement among the students, staff and parents. Sport is a wonderful opportunity for developing skills, fitness, teamwork, perseverance and strategy. Our goal at Xavier is always to keep sport in perspective. In recent years we have developed a code of conduct and we would ask that everyone observe and partake in the right spirit.

Code of Conduct

As a school we greatly appreciate the support of parents and supporters at all of our sporting events and value your commitment to the following:

Xavier College—where sportsmanship is an expectation.

To achieve this goal:

Let players play Let coaches coach Let officials officiate Let spectators be positive.

Blessings and peace for the coming week.

Dr Chris Hayes Principal [email protected]

PRAYER FOR A NEW SCHOOL TERM

Lord, as we prepare for the coming of a new school term, make us ready, attentive and available to hear you.

Thank You for the gift of being able to rise each day with the assurance that You walk through it with us.

Thank You for the gift of creativity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use.

May all that we are today, all that we try to do today, may all our encounters, reflections, even the frustrations and failings all be placed in your hands.

May the work we do and the way we do it, bring new hope, new life and courage to all with whom we come in contact with this term.

We thank you Lord.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF THE SENIOR CAMPUS Dear Parents and Guardians Welcome to Term 2! I hope you have had a relaxing Easter break and for your sons, I trust it has been a refreshing holiday and that they are ready to hit the ground running for the start of term. A new term brings new challenges and new opportunities and I encourage the boys to be fully engaged and focused from day one. A particular emphasis on the Campus at the moment is the standard of dress and presentation. With the weather becoming more cooler and all boys now in Winter Uniform, the expectation is that the uniform will be worn well and with pride. In order to give some impetus to this, the boys will be encouraged, through their Houses, to set as high a standard as possible in their overall presentation both at school as well as travelling to and from school. While this will have a fun and competitive side to it, the consequences of not meeting the expectations will have a serious side to it. Boys who do not meet the expectations, after being given opportunity to do so, will have a meeting with me and this may result in contact with parents and, if necessary, some ‘time out’ from school until the issue is resolved. I would ask for parental support with this over the coming weeks. There are a number of events coming up in the next two weeks.

Parent/Teacher/Student meetings Thursday and Friday this week—classes finish at lunchtime Thursday and there will be no classes on Friday.

Winter Sport Program begins this weekend (including Xavier hosting the Victorian Schools Rugby 7s carnival).

RECOMMENDED READS FROM THE BRENNAN RESOURCE CENTRE Welcome to Recommended Reads! The Xavier College Resource Centres promote a reading culture which supports and enriches reading for pleasure and develops an appreciation of literature.

TITLE The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books, Book one) AUTHOR: Carlos Ruiz Zafrón PUBLISHER: Penguin Books, 2004 The Shadow of the Wind is a coming-of-age tale of a young boy who, through the magic of a single book, finds a purpose greater than himself.

In post-war Barcelona, a bookseller leads his son to a crypt called the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. The labyrinth crypt houses the books that have lost their owners and are now forgotten. It is here that

ten year old Daniel pulls The Shadow of the Wind from the shelf and adopts it as his own. He begins an adventure that will unravel another man’s tragedy and solve a mystery that has taken many lives and will shape his future.

The Shadow of the Wind is a compelling novel, which interweaves fate, time, and romance. It is difficult to classify the novel in one genre. There is courage, intrigue, love, redemption, politics, love, hate, passion. The quality of writing is superb—the power of storytelling, the characters and the plot all come together and speak of books and reading and the love for them.

THE MAYTIME FAIR

The Maytime Fair is the major annual fundraiser in Victoria for the work of the Jesuit Mission and is supported by a vast array of friends and benefactors connected with schools, parishes and other communities in and beyond the state. The Fair is run by an Executive Committee of Victorian Friends of Jesuit Mission consisting of Jesuit Mission staff, Xavier College past and present parents, Xavier College current staff members and other supporters. Their main policy for the running of the Maytime Fair is that every stall and attraction donates 100% of its profit to the work of the Jesuit Mission.

The Maytime Fair consistently contributes over $100,000 each year for vital work in the developing world.

All of the funds raised from the Maytime Fair go directly to help people in suffering countries including Cambodia, China, East Timor, India, Myanmar Pakistan, Thailand and The Philippines and several in Africa.

Xavier College has been hosting the Maytime Fair for 62 years. Each year the College has been extremely generous in the provision of its grounds to host the event and its students and staff. This group oversees the organisation of bands and music played at the Fair and student stalls and activities and promotes involvement in the event amongst other schools in the area.

The Friends of Jesuit Mission are the champions of the event, running the stalls, gathering all the goodies on display, organizing the bands and the orchestras, preparing the food and rallying all their families and friends to attend. The Fair will include amusements and rides for children of all ages as well as a variety of music, a huge array of food outlets and stalls offering car and wine raffles, plant stalls, a second hand book store, cakes and confectionary, stamps, coins and Vintage and lots more.

If you would like to assist with the Maytime Fair please contact Jo Bell, President Maytime Fair Committee, Mob 0401 060 678 or email [email protected].

Please come to the Maytime Fair on Saturday 4 May and join in the fun to support vital work with the poor of the developing world..

NOTICEBOARD CONT. SPINOLA HOUSE TOY STORE Spinola House will again be running a toy store at the Maytime Fair. The success of last year's stall was due to the incredible generosity of the Xavier community. We are hoping for a similar generous response this year. If you have old or unused toys that you would like to donate, please leave them at Reception at either the Senior Campus, Burke Hall or Kostka Hall. Toys that are unsold are donated to charity.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF SPORT Welcome back to Term 2 Sport. Our attention now turns to our Winter Sport program—please see below some key information relating to winter sport.

Attendance at Sport Training and Matches The winter sporting program requires each boy to attend all training sessions and fixtured games. There will be occasions where students may be unavailable due to ill health or injury; but I ask for your support in ensuring your son’s relevant coach and/or Teacher-In-Charge are always fully informed.

It is important that Xavier College fulfils each and every sporting fixture—in order to do so it is critical that each and every student commits to their selected team. Poor communication and a lack of respect for coaches, fellow team mates and the opposition school will not be accepted.

Sports Uniform All students are required to wear the full sports uniform to all games/sporting fixtures. A number of squads are required to wear full school uniform to each fixture. Coaches will communicate with the boys as to what is required. It is also expected that students remain in their sports uniform if staying to support fellow Xavier teams.

When travelling home from sports training on public transport, students must change back into full school uniform.

Valuables It is important that students valuables are not left in open area during both sport training and competition. As has been previously communicated, there are a number of options to take to ensure students don’t have any personal items stolen:

Hand your computer in to the Stephenson Centre Hand your valuables to your coach who can store them away Hand your valuables to the Property Steward who will ensure safe keeping

Do not leave your valuables sitting in the bottom of your bag or beside the field of play.

Teachers-In-Charge of Sport Each sport at Xavier College is allocated a Teacher-In-Charge (TIC) who assists the Sports Department with the co-ordination of that particular sport. The following staff members are relevant to the winter program:

Winter Aikido ................................................... Mr Elio Sanciolo Basketball ............................................ Ms Maree Girolami Cross Country ...................................... Mr Peter Van Miltenburg Football ................................................ Mr James Jacobs Hockey ................................................. Mr Ian Thornton Rugby ..................................................
