Some believe success comes from knowing what you want, dedication and hard work but for Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital's newest Board Chairperson Gugulethu Xaba, these traits are not complete until you believe in yourself, be disciplined and mostly believe in God.

From a young age Xaba has always shown qualities of leadership and he has lived up to those qualities. He grew up a leader, taking part in a lot of things that needed a hands-on leader. Amongst those things was youth development which he discovered he had passion for.

“Planning and working on the plans is what keeps me in-line.”

As TUT’s Student Governance and Leadership Development Director, he has his plate full, juggling prestigious positions including the new one, being Chairperson of the board at Dr George Mukhari hospital as well as Deputy Chairperson at Vuselela TVET College. It may look easy but Xaba has had to stick tight to rules he made for himself, to continue delivering outstanding work to all his positions.

TUT hosted a virtual Youth Day celebration under the theme, ‘Youth Power: Growing South Africa together during the period of COVID-19’.

The event which was hosted via Zoom and streamed live of the Bua Student Newspaper and TUT’S Facebook pages featured Author, Speaker and Entrepreneur Sbusiso Leope well known by his stage name DJ Sbu, Linda Ntuli and the Student Governance and Leadership Development Director Gugulethu Xaba.

Ntuli shared a message of shift where he encouraged students to spend time investing in themselves every day.

You need to spend at least 30 minutes of your time every morning investing in yourself. To reflect and to

ensure that the day that you are going through is going to be a great day.

He added that the youth needs to have hunger and will to change their current situation, to move on and to make sure that they become achievers and not complainers.

“If you are not depositing anything you are not going to be able to withdraw anything. You need to have inspiration to finish your course.”

Leope encouraged the youth to be independent and not rely on the government to do everything for them.

“What I preach is that let us all be independent. If you rely on the government all the time, you are going to have to wait for them to come and ask for votes, promise you heaven and earth. If they don’t deliver on their promises, we will obviously get disappointed.”

He added that for us to fill our stomachs, look after our families and make a change in our communities, we had to do something ourselves and be independent.

“When I was fired at the South African Broadcasting, I didn’t cry foul, but I thanked the SABC. I left a great relationship that I can always walk in to SABC and cut a deal.”

Xaba added that TUT has developed a strategic plan to take the University forward. He said one of the pillars of this strategic plan is that, the University wants to develop future ready graduates who will make positive societal impact.”

The Minister of Higher Education, Training, Science and Technology Dr Blade Nzimande said that he was impressed by the work TUT has put in place in

preparation for the return of students to campus.

The minister visited the TUT Ga-Rankuwa Campus on Tuesday 8 June 2020 to make an assessment on the state of readiness for phased returning of students to the campuses.

This follows his announcement last month where he stated that the when the country moves to level 3 lockdown, they would start the process of partially re-opening of institutions of higher learning.

“I must say I am very impressed, not because I’m trying to please the Vice chancellor. The way you are seating now shows. I am told that this lecturing hall carries 120 students but now it has been prepared to carry only 45 students.”

He also noted that it was impressive to see that TUT has repurposed its laboratory which is normally used for research, to produce sanitizers and disinfectors.

TUT’s Vice-Chancellor & Principal Prof Lourens Van Staden stated that the institution has put in place a strong quality mechanism to monitor the implementation of the institution’s plans.

“We have a hotline where students can always use to raise concerns. We have our own team of Phycologists to support our students and as well as the South African Depression and Anxiety group where our students can link if they need other support.”

You need to continue working hard no matter what the obstacles are, there is

always someone watching.

Maesela’s NNBA takes a solid stand Dineo Gcaza

L ife has no expectations, except for the ones you make, these are the words that the 23 year old TUT Journalism student, Maesela Ledwaba has lived by

as he grew to make a name for himself through his newly found clothing brand, No Name Brand Apparel (NNBA).

Through his love for fashion, Ledwaba started printing out designs on basic t-shirts in 2018 which was successful until the year 2019 and that was when NNBA was born.

He said that he felt the need to come up with a clothing line that is affordable and stylish for the youth. He added that his customers also played a huge part in the founding of his new brand.

Ledwaba said that he has partnered with a couple of social media influencers to thoroughly promote his clothing brand for more reception from people all over the country which has been a great success thus far.

“I have not had any collaborations yet, but I do get help from other designers in terms of showing me where to stock for good clothing material.”

He mentioned that his business does not receive any type of funding, he takes care of the costs and he has been surviving off his business since 2018 without any hardships.

He emphasized that the reception from students and other costumers has been outstanding.

“I have been getting major support from people all over the country and that is what has kept my business afloat.”

However, his business was affected when the country was still under level 5 lockdown due to COVID-19 but as soon as the country moved to level 4, his business started operating again.

Ledwaba mentioned that consistency is the key to everything. [email protected]

During these challenging times where people are quarantining at home, second year Information Technology student, Kagiso Monageng was

crowned as the winner of the lockdown Twitter Red Mic competition hosted by musician Donald Moatshe.

Monageng who has been a musician all his life said that he was honored and overwhelmed by the support that People are showing him.

Monageng knew about the competition through a friend and he encouraged him to enter.

This competition gave Monageng a contract with Moatshe’s Deluxe Sounds record label which is registered under Universal Music.

The versatile musician who normally uploads song covers on social media said that winning the competition was a huge step in his career.

“It’s a transition from being just a regular Instagram cover singer to this stage. I believe that I will focus on what I do and only improve to be better. I will also be focusing on production because I really love it as well.

Asked about who inspires him to do music, Monageng said that he is inspired by all musicians.

“Hearing their songs being sang by other people, that really inspires me because I also want that with my music.”

With this huge milestone in his career, one would expect a single from him to maintain momentum but Monageng said that he was not sure of when he is going to drop a record.

“As soon as everything settles down and eases up there will be something.”

DED goes digital Angel Masinga

The Directorate of Extracurricular Development has announced that they would be hosting their annual events online to keep moving and trending on social

media during this challenging time of COVID-19.

Their annual events include the battle of DJs and Comedy Nights to name a few.

MJ Olifant pointed out that COVID-19 has made it impossible for them to continue with their programs for the year 2020 which gave birth to the idea to continue to educate and entertain students through social media platforms.

He added that they will not only provide out of class content but also have motivational plays, music and debates that will help to build a broader and holistic student.

Olifant said that social media has always been a platform that reaches many students compared to when they do this competition at campus.

This time around students will be offered

an opportunity to watch all the activities on a much better, larger scale and at the comfort of their own homes.

“We are well equipped to provide quality content to our students, and we will utilize our own recording resources to capture everything.”

He said that they are fully prepared since the institution has started loading mobile data into students’ accounts which makes it easier for them to reach majority of the students.

He added that the advantage about social media is that students will be able to view all the events that took place later and no students will be left behind.

“We have the required resources and mobility to facilitate events even during lockdown, the events are thoroughly planned and executed there is no doubt in my mind that we shall surely deliver.”

Entertains viewers on

Campuscrush

Nhlawulo Vision Chauke

The National Lockdown and C0VID-19 have put more production on hold but the most unique and loved students’ platform to find love, Campus Crush has created a platform on Instagram to allow students to continue

finding love and being entertained even though they are not shooting episodes.

According to Sylvester Hlongwane, the lockdown period created a lot of opportunities for the brand, but he did not take them because they did not offer what they had asked.

We have been trying to find a broadcaster that will be good for

students because students want to be entertained.

“Some things I don’t want to say them because they are still materializing, but we have bigger plans for students, locally and internationally. We know how to keep them entertained while they are at home doing their academic work.”

Hlongwane said that they will be posting a concept: What happened to Campus Crush? He added that this concept will allow people to share their thoughts on what happened to Campus Crush.

“The team and viewers will share their opinion on what happened to our production. We will then tell them what happened with an episode on YouTube and that will be the return of our production.”

He added that we must realize that the pandemic did not only affect YouTubers, Television, Film and Production but it has made life difficult for everyone across the world.

Makhubela does not back downFROM A CHALLENGENomzamo Masinga

While Cyberbullying is meant to discourage us, it certainly moulded a whole new person for Mpumalanga born model.

Studying towards her Diploma in Tourism Management, Portia Makhubela was ready to take back her power by entering Miss South Africa 2020 but unfortunately it did not go as planned.

She said that she wanted to change the expectations around what beauty is and inspire those whose voices are silenced by today’s social media trends.

Being a warrior, she is not letting that little setback bring her down. With a newly found energy and determination she looks forward to giving it a try in 2021.

Makhubela is a pageant, fashion, and runway model. She has also given her time to training others who want to take up the journey to the world of modelling. To her, helping others is her way of showing them never to give in to critics and continue doing what they love.

She recalled the year 2017 when she entered a local and national pageant where her confidence was crushed on social media because she did not make it.

Her pictures circulated making fun of her with captions stating that she was not modelling material.

That threw me off the game, but I realised that those people saw

potential, that is why they tried to drag me down.

In 2018 she became an ambassador to Born Great Movement- a company that inspires the youth to chase after their dreams. She also made it to Semi-finals of Miss Culture and Tourism SA. The cherry on top was when she got recognized by clothing and hair companies who wanted her as their promotions model including big names like FILA, Slay Boutique, and Infinity goals.

She believes Zozibini Tunzi is a great example of not giving up. Considering that Miss Tunzi had once entered Miss SA and did not go through.

“I believe that most people can learn something about persistence from her.”

Makhubela looks to inspire young women from all spheres of life. Particularly those in the rural areas with little knowledge and resources. Her goal is to ensure she at least inspires women to take charge of their dreams and goals and believes this prestigious title will give her the platform to do just that.

“I want to build my own modelling agency where young women will be able to learn modelling without having to pay.”

MABUZA BELIEVEShis team will stay in formNomzamo Masinga

The outbreak of Covid-19 has put a lot of activities on hold including the South African Football Association Women’s

League (SAFA).

Because of this pandemic, it is impossible for soccer teams to practice and play games but the TUT Ladies team keeps ensuring they are ready for action should things go back to normal.

The ladies were having a great season and they were number two in the league behind Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies team after some tremendous results and they believe they were in for a promising season.

The TUT ladies team coach, Sipho Mabuza told Bua that he is hopeful the girls will still have a good run even after this national lockdown.

He added that he has put programmes in place for them to follow and continue training at home.

Mabuza admits that it has been hard keeping in touch with his team, but they have not allowed the situation to stop them from maintaining contact to ensure they stay healthy and fit.

He told Bua that through cell phones, they have managed to keep contact.

“It’s really been tough but thanks to cell phones

we are able to communicate through the group and even one on one.”

Mabuza believes that the ladies will come back with the same energy as before and continue giving their utmost best all the time.

DCNF a pillar of strength

Dineo Gcaza

The Dumisani Chauke Netball Foundation (DCNF) in partnership with TUT Sport and the Harry Gwala Foundation handed

over food relief parcels to underprivileged girls at Stinkwater, Hammaskral on Saturday 13 June 2020.

According to the founder of DCNF Dumisani Chauke, she started the #Each1FeedANetballGirl after realising the harsh reality that most underprivileged families are facing during this difficult time of Covid-19.

She added that most of the girls in her foundation survive through feeding schemes in school.

“This food parcel idea was inspired by the fact that during lockdown things are quite hard for the girls and the only meal they would receive would be through the school feeding scheme, which has been difficult for them and their parents.”

We are trying to erase the thought of worrying about

the next meal in our girls, we want them to focus on their academics and sport without having to worry about where their next meal is going to come from.

She said that she hopes to see the foundation grow in all parts of south Africa and not just small areas so a girl child’s life can be given hope and growth.

“We would like to spread our influence and the rest of our programmes to the rest of South Africa and grow and empower more girls.”
