The annual Turner Lectures is always a well-attended and well-planned event, and 2008 is no exception! Begun in 1964 as a memorial to loved leader William F. Turner (who served in the Northwest and the wider church for over 50 years), the Turner Lectures has brought many distinguished speakers to the NW Region. The Lectures are enjoyed by clergy and laity alike.

This year's featured speaker is Diana Butler Bass, author of Christianity for the Rest of Us. To get more information, including a tentative schedule, lodging options, and an overview of Diana Butler Bass' work, visit the NW Region Disciples of Christ website at www.disciplesnw.org. Turner Memorial Lecture Series ENGLEWOOD CHRISTIAN CHURCH, YAKIMA, WA—OCTOBER 6-8

Busy. Tired. Stressed. Much of our modern life too often is defined by these three words. At our Fall retreat at Holden Village we’ll explore the tradition and practice of Sabbath-keeping and focus on God’s invitation to find a rhythm of rest within our culture’s endless cycle of action. We’ll take time to explore play, relaxation, and self-care.

GETTING THERE & BACK: Carpooling or driving alone, arrive at the Lake Chelan dock Friday, October 10th for the 8:30 am departure of the Lady of the Lake II (Holden Village is only accessible by boat). Retreatants will pay boat trip and parking fees; boat trip reservations are available. The return boat brings us to the Chelan dock by 6 pm on October 12th.

RETREAT FEES PER PERSON:

Adult $66.00 12 - 17 $53.00 4 - 11 $33.00 0 - 3 $17.00

ACTIVITIES: Once there, we’ll share meals and join others in worship for Holden evening vespers.

On Friday and Saturday we’ll meet together for group discussions. We’ll look at the biblical foundations for Sabbath-keeping, reflect upon our own experiences of Sabbath, and learn ways to practice Sabbath-keeping.

Free time will be set aside for individuals to hike, fish, visit the craft center, enjoy the beautiful surroundings, or simply relax. Holden has a general store with gifts, books, and personal toiletries. Bring a checkbook or cash, Holden Village does not accept credit cards.

For more information about what items to bring (and not to bring), registration deadlines, additional retreat details, directions, and more about Holden Village, please look for the retreat brochure at the church or call the church office.

A Week in Mission: Love in Action— living into God’s plan for FCC Puyallup SECOND WEEK IN MISSION AN ALL AROUND SUCCESS

The Chimes Page 3

“If one wishes to know love, one must live love, in action. Thoughts, readings and discourse on love

are of value only as they present questions to be acted upon.”             ‐Leo Buscaglia

During A Week in Mission: Love in Action, planners and participants asked for God’s guiding presence, and God did not disappoint. The Week kicked off on Sunday, August 10th in a Worship gathering wherein Pastor Nancy asked attendees to take three questions into the Week in Mission with them: What did you give? What did you receive? Where did you experience God? The answers soon became evident as through eight days of activities focusing on love of God, neighbor, and self, the gifts of time, labor, prayers, teaching, and love that were given by dozens of contributors were met with rewards that could not be bought, and God’s presence was felt at every turn.

From Sunday to Sunday, a myriad of activities were planned. Supplies were purchased, announcements made, door hangers hung. All the mechanics of the week were in place, t’s crossed and i’s dotted. No plan was left unchecked. But the real success stories emerged through the week as the Holy Spirit peeked into each day’s event.

“The Scriptures recognize music as a means for praise (Acts 16:25; Rom 15:9 [originally sung]), a means of expressing joy (Jam 5:13), thanksgiving (Psa 92:1-3), sorrow for sin (Is. 16:10), a means of prayer (1Co 14:15; Psa 72:20), and a means of teaching and spiritual communication (Col 3:16; Eph 5:19). Biblical music makers are professional (1Ch 15:22; 25:7; Is. 5:11-12; Ez. 33:32), and nonprofessional (Psa 100; 1Ki 1:39-40; 1Co 14:26; Eph 5:19; Col 3:16). There are those who direct music (Psa 4:1, 5:1, 6:1, etc.; Neh. 12:8) and teach music (1Ch 15:22). The people of the Bible overflow with music, including cultural uses placed in positive (1Sa 18:7) and negative terms (Eze 33:32). Music sounded in every aspect of life—work, play, celebration, even war (Is. 16:10; Jer 48:33; Mat 11:17; Luk 15:25; Gen 31:27; Exo 32:17-18; Ecc 2:8; Jdg 11:34-35; 2Sa 19:35).

Jewish musicologist Abraham Idelsohn says, ‘As many references in the Bible to the music performed in secular life testify, Israel enjoyed life through music both vocal and instrumental, and associated music with dance and wine in which men and women participated.’”

O sing unto the Lord a new song GOOD THINGS HAPPENING IN OUR MINISTRY OF MUSIC

In spring our beloved music director Tasha regrettably moved away. The choir went on their scheduled hiatus. Since then, Pastor Nancy has led us in challenging new songs through summer, and we’ve gained confidence in our abilities as we’ve shared the songs that have shaped our faith, learned rounds, and woven harmonies... sometimes in other languages! Now our music ministry has a wonderful opportunity to recreate itself as we approach a new season of music at First Christian Church in Puyallup.

All who are interested in testing the waters of singing with our choir are invited to a choir kickoff potluck on Wednesday, September 24th at 6:30 pm at Kerry and Sharon Yanasak’s home at 2017 - 7th Street SW.

Music can form our attitudes, moods, sentiments, and memories, and in turn helps to shape the persons we become. For many of us, the songs that most illuminated our walks with God were ones we learned as children and remember fondly. Others of us were transformed by a song when we were old enough to appreciate the meaning behind the lyrics. Still others have felt God’s presence in a song’s message as adults.

This summer congregants have been invited to share during worship the story of the song that has most touched them on their journey to know God. A rousing success, we have heard from a variety of individuals as they have shared camp songs, praise songs, classic hymns, and “old favorites” from every era.

What are the songs of your faith? Which song has lifted your spirits, changed your faith, taught you, or molded you into the person you are today?

If you would like to share in Worship a song that has had great meaning in your faith journey, please contact Pastor Nancy or Worship Chairperson, Robin Crabb.
