Operation the team landed roughly 100 metres from the craft which was indeed intact, the aliens

presumably carrying out some unknown operation in the area. Captain Maclean ordered the team advance

slowly along the banks of a nearby stream. The UFO appeared to have two exits/entrances, both covered by a

mysterious shimmering forcefield. Cpt. Maclean ordered Rk. Young to cover the left hand exit whilst the rest

of the squad approached the right. This was his first tactical mistake.

Rookie Young informed Cpt. Maclean he could hear movement both in the UFO and in the forest behind him.

Cpt. Maclean did not have a chance to respond, however, because he was busy blowing the brains out of a

sectoid that he had spotted skulking about inside the craft. Rk. Bliss noticed a large glowing pillar within the

craft, flanked by two more sectoids. Dr. Shen informed the squad, via radio, that he believed the pillar to be

the power plant for the whole craft. He suggested that the energies involved in sending the craft across the

vastness of space would be immense, and he warned the squad to exercise extreme caution with firearms in

this area. Command is at something of a loss, therefore, to explain Captain Macleans next move. Reporting

over the radio Careful be damned, he fired his rocket launcher directly at the glowing pillar. The resulting

explosion killed the two nearby sectiods, the power plant, and a large portion of the bridge. Fortunately the

blast radius was not as severe as Dr. Chen had worried about, and the rest of the squad survived Cpt.

Macleans rash choice. At least, initially.

Rk. Young spotted a group of three sectoids and two thin men rapidly leaving the ship from the exit he was

covering. Shaken by the explosion, he fired but failed to hit any of the creatures. Taking cover in some nearby

trees, the aliens turned their attention to Rk. Young, who suddenly felt rather alone. Sq. Patterson threw a

smoke grenade next to him to protect him from retaliation, but unfortunately it wasnt enough to protect him

from the ensuing barrage of hot plasma. Rk. Young melted noisly.

Meanwhile, Rk. Bliss noticed a being of energy materialise in the smoking ruins of the bridge one of the

outsider aliens successfully captured by Sergeant Hancock on a previous mission, and also the same type of

creature which had killed the previous Rookie Bliss. Screaming You wont get me this time you bastard!, she

opened up with her assault rifle, destroying it utterly and cackling manically.

Becoming aware of the situation at the other exit, Captain Maclean ordered Rk. Pook and Bliss through thecraft, whilst he and Sq Patterson ran around the outside of the ship. Captain Mack Maclean took out two

sectoids with his rifle, but his bravery was only rewarded by three direct hits from the other aliens. Thanking

his lucky stars that he decided to wear his nanofibre vest, he began to retreat to the relative safety of the

spacecraft. Breaking cover was his last, and most costly mistake, as a lucky shot from a thin man vaporised

his chest armour and much of his thorax. X-Com had lost their most experienced soldier.

Rookies Pook and Bliss briefly panicked, but were quickly rallied round by Squaddie Patterson, who lead the

team in an all-out assault on the remaining aliens. Despite their shock, the team effectively cleared out the

forest, with Rookie Bliss notching up two more kills, and Rookie Pook finishing off the last one.

Debrief Rookies Pook and Bliss were both promoted to squaddie Blisss can do attitude clearly marking

her for heavy specialisation, filling something of the void left by Captain Maclean. Squaddie Pook shows

promise as an assault trooper. Mack was buried with full honours, and will be remembered. The craft was

partially recovered, but Dr. Shen has advised that future missions may be more successful if a rocket is not

    fired directly into the UFO.
