burglars love christmasWyndham residents are being reminded to step up home security during December and January, with police data showing Christmas presents are attractive targets for would-be burglars. Acting Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said reports of burglaries typically spiked at Christmas and new year. Back on track for big race dayWERRIBEE

Werribee Racing Club hopes to leave the past behind as it celebrates the return of racing to Wyndham this Sunday.

e $80,000 Werribee Cup was set for November 13. But six days before the event, Racing Victoria ruled that the Bulban Road clubs recently renovated track was not ready.

e inside seven metres of the track were renovated a er a race meeting was abandoned on July 17. An apprentice jockey was thrown into a railing when the horse he was riding put his foot in a hole on the track and broke his leg. e horse was put down and the jockey was taken to hospital with suspected leg injuries. Racing Victorias decision forced

the club to reschedule the cup for this Sunday and combine it with its planned Christmas race day.

General manager Ross Kendell said people were understandably disappointed the cup had to be moved to December, but the community had thrown its support behind the new date.

We worked so hard to get a spring date back again, so people were disappointed, but we will give it another push next year, he said.

When we changed the date we braced for the worst but, to be honest, the reaction we got from everyone has been nothing but supportive. Not every regional centre is fortunate enough to have a racing club

we want it to prosper and ourish.Four senior jockeys inspected the track on

November 28, giving it their tick of approval. Mr Kendell said the glowing appraisal

meant the club was on track to host Sundays cup. Everything is ready for

the cup and, most importantly, the track is on track, he said.

Sundays event includes live music, fashions on the eld ,

childrens activities and a visit from Santa. Shuttle buses will run between

Watton Street and the racecourse. \ LAURA LITTLE

Were trapped: Ash Aly says traf c lights or allowing right-hand turns at the corner of Marquands Road and Leakes Road could solve congestion issues and improve safety. (MICHAEL COPP)

    junction a headache for driversTRUGANINA

A Truganina resident claims there is a land-locked island of home owners who face delays of up to 30 minutes to turn from side streets into Leakes Road .

Ash Aly , a stevedore manager in Footscray, said the situation had been made worse with the banning of right-hand turns on the recently sealed Marquands Road .

Mr Aly said cars forced to turn le from Marquands Road to Leakes Road frequently executed dangerous U-turns across high-speed tra c.

Someone will be hurt we need tra c lights or we need to be able to turn right from Marquands Road to Leakes Road to get to the city, he said.

Mr Aly said some residents were using rat runs such as Botanical Drive, which allows right turns into Leakes Road, but they faced a half-hour wait as tra c queued.

Between 7am and 9am there can be a hundred vehicles in Botanical Drive wanting to turn right into Leakes Road, he said .

Its a headache for the residents in that street and for residents in the area generally it is unacceptable.

e whole area is congested, we feel trapped. Work has been going on in Marquands Road for three years and when it

was recently re-opened we thought we would get relief.

Wyndham council did not respond before the Weekly went to print. \

    MY TOWN

Our school has two crossing supervisors. Every morning and a ernoon they cope with the

enormous amount of tra c doing the school run and protect our kids from the drivers who cut in front of buses, overtake slower cars and generally treat the area like it is Avalon Raceway.

Now, these crossing supervisors arent on the busy public roads theyre posted on internal school roads.

Youd assume that mums and dads entering the school grounds would have a bit of common sense and act responsibly, especially around play areas.

Youd also think that theyd do the walking-pace speed limits set by the school and clearly marked on the numerous tra c signs.

And, youd assume, theyd park properly to drop o and pick up their kids, allowing a clear road and line of sight for other drivers.

Well, 10 years at our school has taught me to assume nothing. It seems that, once their own kids are within the safe con nes of their car, some parents treat everyone else like an obstacle to be hurdled or run down.

And, dare I say it, its usually women in enormous four-wheel-drives that are the most obnoxious and impatient.

Im constantly amazed by the danger some people put children in, just so they can get out of the school grounds ve seconds faster than everyone else.

Believe it or not, everyone wants to get home at the end of the day.

Were not alone. One Point Cook mum I know regularly refers to the school run as the w acky races.

So, from all of us who appreciate your work, to all of Wyndhams school crossing supervisors, thank you for another year of keeping our kids safe from that small percentage of inconsiderate, self-important morons. \

multiple charges for car park burnout driverWERRIBEE

A Werribee driver who allegedly performed burnouts in front of a marked police car, with a pregnant passenger beside him, faces a string of charges.

Police were astounded when the 22-year-old spun the tyres of his ute in the Werribee Plaza car park about 2pm last Wednesday .

ere were a number of families and children in the car park, he said.

will be charged on summons with numerous tra c o ences . Westgate road policing o cer Acting Senior Sergeant Fiona Waters said police were targeting irresponsible road users in the lead-up to Christmas.

Many collisions are preventable, with speed, drugs and alcohol, inexperience and driver error accounting for a signi cant percentage of this trauma, Ms Waters said.

She said the campaign would focus on drink drivers and motorists distracted by mobile telephones, entertainment systems or passengers. \ SH

jewellers kindness has a nice ring to it

A Wyndham Vale couple is grateful for the kindness of a Werribee jeweller who offered to replace their engagement ring after it fell into Corio Bay.

Rodney OShannessy proposed to Sarah Lentsment while strolling along Geelongs boardwalk promenade on November 30.

But when Mr OShannessy opened the box, the ring fell out, slipping between the cracks of the boardwalk and into the water.

The next day Ms Lentsment called Prouds at Werribee Plaza, where the ring had been purchased, to see if she could order a new one.

We rang the jewellers and explained what happened and the owner raced down to Geelong with a new ring, she said.

We couldnt believe he had organised a new ring for us. We couldnt believe the trouble he had gone to.

Luckily for the happy couple, divers found their lost ring in the bay last Monday.

We didnt end up needing the new ring, but it was really sweet of him to do that for us. \ LL

union push for pay parity points to empty shelves

    JOBS

A union has warned that supplies to Coles could be disrupted in the lead-up to Christmas, with about 200 Linfox workers at a western suburbs warehouse poised to strike over pay and conditions.

About 200 National Union of Workers (NUW) members at the Coles Myer Laverton distribution centre have voted to take protected industrial action.

In October, union delegates Michael Manolitsis, of Maribyrnong, and Ken Price, of Hillside, were stood down a er speaking to the media about workplace conditions during a protest at the site. ey were later reinstated.

NUW organiser Matt Toner said industrial action could range from four-hour stoppages to an inde nite strike.

He said unless a deal could be reached with Linfox, retailers could be feeling the e ects into the new year.

e supply chain might be a ected in the coming weeks before Christmas, Mr Toner said. If theres no goods coming out of the warehouse, Coles will be struggling to put goods on the shelf.

He said the pickers and packers were ghting for the same pay and conditions as other workers around the country.

Pay is a big issue. e rate of pay there is around $5-$6 an hour less than what other

Coles warehouses are being paid around the country, and theyre doing the exact

same work. We know that they can a ord to pay these workers what other workers get paid, so this is really just an issue of equality for us.

Mr Toner said the workers received one paid 15-minute break while

counterparts elsewhere were entitled to two breaks with pay.

Linfox group manager Gary Max said: We are not making comment at this time. \

    sharp rise in jail attacksASSAULTS

Attacks in Port Phillip Prison and the Metropolitan Remand Centre are at a ve-year high, driving up assault rates in Wyndham and Melton.

Latest police statistics show that Wyndham police received 787 reports of assaults (excluding family violence) between October 1, 2012 and September 30 up 57.7 per cent on the previous year.

In Melton, assaults rose 17.4 per cent, with 729 attacks reported to police.

Wyndhams Inspector Damien Christensen and Meltons Acting Inspector Tim OConnor said increases in prison assaults were behind the surge. Assaults in Port Phillip Prison are counted in Wyndhams crime statistics, while assaults at the Metropolitan Remand Centre in Ravenhall are included in Meltons.

Community and Public Sector Union industrial o cer Andrew Capp said assaults were becoming commonplace at the remand centre and Port Phillip Prison, with overcrowding leading to prisoners lashing out. Mr Capp said there were more than 800 prisoners at the remand centre and more than 1000 prisoners at Port Phillip.

ere has been an increase in double-ups in cells, he said.

If you have a prisoner in a single cell and then they have to share a cell, they arent happy about it.

e Justice Departments annual report reveals that prison assaults across the state are at a ve-year high . According to the report, an average of 18.7 prisoners in every 100 were attacked by a fellow inmate last nancial year, up from 14.1 in 2008-09.

    Prisoner-on-sta assaults rose from 2.2 per 100 in 2008-09 to 4.3 in 2012-13.

A Corrections Victoria spokesman said all assaults in prisons were taken seriously and were reported to police. He said prisoner placements were managed to ensure security. \

The east-west link will soak up money that should be used for education, health care and other essential services.

Our socially engineered, runaway population growth means that our budgets will be drained and people are destined to live in deprivation.

At least 60 per cent of our population growth is due to heavy immigration levels, despite the lack of jobs and infrastructure.

Long-term planning should be out of state government hands, due to its vested interests in real estate and big business.

packed roads taxing the patience of cranky driversROAD SAFETYPolice are urging drivers to be patient after a big increase in road-rage incidents in Wyndham.

Inspector Damien Christensen attributed part of the rise in assaults in the past year to motorists losing their cool.We are getting a lot of road-rage reports because there is more congestion on the roads, he said. The lower speeds have brought down trauma and serious injury, but low-level accidents are up.Police have started Christmas road policing operations and are urging drivers to plan for delays and changes in driving conditions.Inspector Christensen said drivers needed to show patience. The message to drivers is there will be different drivers on the road at Christmas, he said. There will need to be behavioural changes.Injuries on Wyndhams roads fell last financial year to 398 from 408 the previous year. Nine drivers were killed on the citys roads up to June 30.We will be running booze bus operations over Christmas, so leave your car at home if you are planning to drink, Inspector Christensen said. \ LL

    WYNDHAM CRIME STATISTICS

crime down, but bashings, roberries on the riseWYNDHAMReported assaults in Wyndham increased by more than 50 per cent in the past year follow-ing more attacks on police, protective services officers and shopping centre security guards.Latest crime statistics released last week show 787 reports of assaults (excluding family violence) were made in Wyndham between October 2012, and September this year up almost 58 per cent from the previous year.Inspector Damien Christensen said the rise could be partly attributed to attacks at Port Phillip Prison, which is in the Wyndham

police service area, and assaults on police. Assaults have gone up but we have found that they relate to the prison, attacks on police and [protective services officers], increases in road rage and attacks on loss-prevention officers in stores, he said.Inspector Christensen said police and PSOs would assess how they worked with drink and drug-affected people and would run safety operations in shopping centres.

Robberies increased in the past year, up 15.1 per cent to 84 offences.

Inspector Christensen said while many of the robberies were low-levelcrimes, such as a young person stealing a mobile phone, there had been several armed robberies in the past year. There was an attempted armed robbery at a fast food store in Derrimut Road, Hoppers Crossing, on November 26. Two men, including one carrying a shotgun, approached the stores delivery driver about 4.30 am.It was the second attempted armed robbery at the store this year.

In August, two masked men approached a delivery driver and stole a quantity of cash before fleeing the store. The statistics revealed a drop in residential burglaries and theft from and of motor vehicles.Total crime fell 5.5 per cent, with 12,080 reports made to police, down from 12,788 between October 2011, and September 2012.Our members have worked very hard at identifying offenders and taking them to court, Inspector Christensen said. hop on to transport survey, residents toldSTATE ELECTION

Commuters in Melbournes outer west are being urged to make their transport priorities known ahead of next years state election.

e Metropolitan Transport Forum (MTF), comprising 23 councils from across Melbourne, is asking residents to complete its state of public transport survey before December 20.

Survey results, to be presented to the Labor and Liberal parties and their candidates, will inform MTF campaigns in the lead-up to the election.

MTF executive member and Wyndham councillor Glenn Goodfellow said it was important that residents in the outer west made their voices heard.

In August, Auditor-General John Doyle found that public transport in growth areas, including Wyndham and Melton, had been inadequately funded by successive state governments, and that $10 billion was needed to address the infrastructure backlog.

We have seen some improvements in local transport in the last three years but we need to take a holistic approach to the transport problem, Cr Goodfellow said.

We need to look at improving bus routes. At the moment, if I dont have

a car, how do I get from Wyndham to Melton?

e survey follows a recent MTF public transport forum highlighting the transport shortfalls in growth areas.

MTF chairman Cr Tom Melican said the state government needed

to invest in road and rail infrastructure to change the way people moved around Melbourne.

Its not a road versus trains issue, he said. A lot of growth has occurred and there is no choice in growth areas.

We build suburbs then argue about transport options, o en too late and too expensive. \

Dr She eld-Brotherton (pictured right) was last week announced as the Greens candidate for the new seat of Werribee, while Mr Waring (le ) will stand in Tarneit.

Mr Waring, who recently became a Wyndham Greens member, said he was contesting the election because he felt the western suburbs had been ignored by the Liberal and Labor parties . ey havent invested in the physical and social infrastructure needed to x our roads and trains or even to provide jobs in the west, he

said . Dr She eld-Brotherton, who contested the 2010 state election in Tarneit , said the Greens wanted to see greater investment in Wyndhams schools.

He said schools such as Werribee Secondary College urgently needed funding to create a safe learning environment for students.

e Liberal and Labor parties are yet to announce their candidates.

Current Tarneit Labor MP Tim Pallas has sought preselection for Werribee, while Derrimut Labor MP Telmo Languiller is hoping his party will endorse him as its candidate for Tarneit.

wyndham cooks up a plan for better healthHEALTH

Wyndham residents who lack cooking skills are being urged to sign up for a ve-week course aimed at teaching them how to prepare healthy and nutritious food.

British chef Jamie Olivers Ministry of Food will open a mobile kitchen in Hoppers Crossing on February 28 and run weekly cooking classes that are part of the Healthy Together Wyndham initiative, which aims to improve the health and well-being of the citys residents.

Wyndham is one of 14 at-risk municipalities taking part in the state government initiative.

e city has one of the highest obesity rates in the west, with 23.9 per cent of men and 18.9 per cent of women considered obese. It also has low rates of fruit and vegetable consumption.

e state governments 2012 Victorian Population Health Survey revealed 57 per cent of men and 53 per cent of women in Wyndham did not eat two serves of fruit

and ve serves of vegetables each day. e vegetable consumption rate for children aged between four and 12 was also below the state average.

Jamies Ministry of Food Australia chief executive Alicia Peardon said

participants would learn skills to change their lifestyles. By teaching basic cooking skills, Jamies Ministry of Food helps people gain con dence in the kitchen, which leads to better food

and ultimately better health.Wyndham mayor Bob Fairclough

encouraged residents to sign up for the cooking classes, saying it would help them improve their health and save money.

e mobile kitchen will o er two cycles of ve-week cooking classes.

It will be open seven days a week next to the youth resource centre at 86 Derrimut Road, Hoppers Crossing.

Classes cost $10 a session, and $5 for concession card holders. \

Part of a Werribee nursing home will be demolished in the new year a er Wyndham council approved a multimillion-dollar redevelopment.

Baptcare had applied to the council to build a multi-storey development at Wyndham Lodge to boost its capacity from 60 to 150 residents. e aged- care provider says the redevelopment will bring the home, which is more than 40 years old, up to a modern standard.

e council approved the permit at its meeting last month.

Cr Michele Wharrie said the upgrade was good news for the community. eres a need for more aged-care beds and to increase our ability to provide respite care for the needy in our community, and this redevelopment o ers that, she said .

A Baptcare spokeswoman said demolition work was expected to start early next year, with

construction expected to be completed by October 2015.

As reported by the Weekly, 29 of the nursing homes residents had to nd new homes to make way for the redevelopment . Many families objected to being asked to move their loved ones to a new aged-care centre and raised concerns about their ability to cope with the move.

However, 21 residents were able to move to other aged-

care homes in Wyndham while six transferred to Baptcares Westhaven Community in Footscray.

Two residents were able to stay at Wyndham Lodge.Operations manager

Lindon Le Gri on said Baptcare had tried to move as few residents as possible to avoid disrupting too many people.

He said Baptcare initially tried to buy neighbouring land so no one would have to move.

law reform to smooth way for disabledlaverton

A Laverton woman with a vision impairment says people with a disability should not automatically be barred from jury duty.

Annmarie Kelly, who has a seeing eye dog named Ouzo, says she can see only at extremely close range.

But she believes that should not prohibit her from being considered as a juror.

Her comments come as the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) calls for feedback on laws which treat people with a disability unfairly.

Asked how she would be able to see visual evidence if required by a court, Ms Kelly said the law should look at how it could include people with a disability.

When I rst got asked to go on jury duty ... they said, no you cant do it because youre blind, Ms Kelly said.

eres always ways around things. Im extremely shortsighted, is the way I put it, which means Ive got close-up vision. ere is adaptive technology to help vision-impaired

people see things. e ALRC has released an issues paper looking at how the law discriminates against people with a disability in areas such as employment, voting, jury duty, going to court, marriage and adoption.

We think the law may need to change so people with a disability are allowed

to be part of a jury, the paper states. It adds that people with a

disability should be able to control and borrow money, and that we must make sure voting is easy and

secret. Ms Kelly said people should be

aware of proposed changes and have the opportunity to provide input.

Its about changing the law to make it more equal for people with disabilities.

A better understanding of disabilities in society would be great.\

I reckon you were right, Steve Bracks says. Im having a cuppa with the former state premier at his Williamstown home. Sunlight flows through a stained-glassed window, an anchor at the centre of its nautical theme.Three years ago, Id suggested boat people would come to

dominate federal politics. It was during a 2010 interview, when Bracks was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia, the highest civilian honour.

It seems to have been a bigger issue than I would have expected or maybe not you, you foretold it most people would have expected in Victoria, Bracks says.

And probably an issue out of proportion to the number of people who are coming here seeking asylum. Compared to the rest of the world, while its increasing, its certainly not at the level of Europe; its not at the level of Canada; its not at the level of other parts of South-East Asia.

So, proportionately, its surprising how big an issue it is.When youre desperate, you could do anything if you want

to protect your family and seek to get a better life and thats your only prospect.

As well as the predominance of boat people on the political agenda, another surprise to him was the first act of Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop after the Liberals won power at Septembers federal election.

In May, Bracks, 59, had been given the US diplomatic post of Australias next consul-general in New York. On the eve of his departure, he was stunned to learn he had been sacked, a move that some analysts labelled vindictive.

While surprised the Liberals didnt choose to uphold the position, Bracks says at least they decided early so he was able to regain the former positions he wanted. Hang on, I quiz. Decided early?

A day just before. But Bracks sees no need to rake over the coals, declaring he

and his wife Terry are over it completely. So, who does he think his replacement will be? Surely not

media mogul Rupert Murdoch, as some perhaps flippantly suggested.

Cmon, it wouldnt be Murdoch; hes otherwise engaged, Bracks laughs. Theyve made their decision. Theyll have their appointment, I assume, and I assume it will be someone who is a confidante of the Liberal Party.

But Im not bitter or concerned about it in any sense other than I thought I would have done a good job and served Australia very well, but Im over it.

Speaking of lifes interruptions, what of Victorias Parliament shutting down for two weeks in November

the form of words, it could have been handled much better by the government than it has. It seemed to have feet of clay on that and I would have thought some better advice could have been appropriate before the Prime Minister responded in the Parliament. It was the wrong forum, the wrong set of words, and that has got us off on the wrong foot.

Bracks says Tony Abbott needs to clarify the purpose of two Australian patrol boats, worth $2 million, given to Sri Lanka, a nation accused of war crimes.

Youd hope theyd only use them for domestic purposes and not for any purpose other than that.

He said British Prime Minister David Cameron had acted appropriately in raising allegations of human rights abuses against Sri Lankan Tamils during the final days of the civil war in 2009; a subject Abbott avoided.

I think the British approach was correct, Bracks says.I think if you were going to Sri Lanka you cant turn a blind

eye to atrocities that occurred internally in that country and I think Prime Minister Cameron did a good job at highlighting that while still participating in the Commonwealth forum, and I thought that was the appropriate thing to do.

And I think thats what we would have expected of our prime minister.

Bracks says its too early to tell how history will judge Abbott.I think the title of the worst prime minister is hotly

contested, but I think its much too early to talk about Tony Abbott hes only been there a couple of months. It hasnt been a spectacular start. In relation to the worst prime minister ever, I think most people, in my age or my generation, would say Billy McMahon.

Bracks is unsurprised about the rise of the Palmer United Party, led by mining magnate Clive Palmer.

He says its an interesting phenomenon but not unusual just look at Pauline Hanson and Bob Katter.

There has been a constituency for an anti-politician politician, of which [Palmer] looks like he is and particularly coming out of the north of Australia so hes a recent incarnation of a lineage of people who have been in that role.

And they tend to be shooting stars; they dont last too long, says Victorias second-longest-serving Labor premier. \

    [email protected]

Bracks to the futureFormer state premier Steve Bracks is not letting a setback deter him, writes Goya DmytryShchaK

after balance-of-power MP Geoff Shaw declared he had lost confidence in Speaker Ken Smith?

I think it is unprecedented, Bracks says.I havent heard before where the Parliament has been closed

down to stop a vote happening, which is what happened. And for the Speaker not to have a majority and to still

continue is without precedent.Bracks has been re-engaged as adviser to Timor-Leste

Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, with a focus on economic development rather than governance.

Australia, of course, had the intervention forces in 1999, which led to the liberation of Timor from Indonesia after 24 years of colonial rule, so there was a great affection for Australia, Bracks says.

Australia had Timor as an ally in the Second World War ... they sided with Australia.

But, yes, there is a concern, currently, over the share of resources that Timor is getting out of the joint territorial waters and the fairness of that compared to what Australia has.

And in relation to Indonesia and the spying allegations, or the release by [Edward] Snowden ... I would have thought with

Mainstream Aquacultures hatchery in Lock Avenue, which will export barramundi stock to 14 countries across four continents, was o cially opened by state Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh on Monday.

Chief executive Boris Musa said the company was the worlds leading provider of recirculating aquaculture food- sh products.

e company recently took part in a state government trade mission to south-east Asia, where it secured a contract to supply ngerlings to a large-scale barramundi farm in Singapore.

Mr Walsh said the hatchery was a shining example .

e hatchery is expected to generate annual revenue in excess of $2 million, he said. is will help the business meet increasing global demand for Victorian barramundi seed stock. \ LL

support in numbers for single parents WYNDHAM

Kerry Arch is not too proud to admit that she will struggle to put Christmas lunch on the table for her children this year.

e Wyndham Vale mother of two has struggled nancially since being shi ed on to lower-paying Newstart payments as part of a move designed to encourage parents to rejoin the workforce once their youngest child turns eight.

e change, which a ected 84,000 families across Australia from January 1, stripped single-parent families of between $60 and $110 a week.

Ms Arch said she had done her best to cope , turning to other single parents for support.

She recently helped form a lobby group, United Sole Parents of Australia, to reach out to other single parents experiencing hardship.

e group is setting up a Wyndham branch, with its rst meeting to be held at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre this Sunday from 1.30pm.

Ms Arch said attendees would be given packages to help them give their families Christmas lunch.

Businesses have made donations to help put packages together, she said. We can only

do [Christmas lunch] with the support of others. e meeting will also be a chance for single parents to nd out about local support services.

When master brewer Dermot ODonnell says his favourite beer is his next, hes only half joking. At 69, hes an international beer judge and the master brewer at Asahi

Premium Beverages Laverton brewery .Along with head brewer Richard Hollingworth , he is

looking forward to developing new beers next year. e Japanese giant still imports its Asahi Super Dry,

but has spent $10 million redeveloping its Laverton site which produces beers, ciders and spirits.

It recently re-launched a boutique beer, Cricketers Arms, in lager, ale and mid-strength varieties.

like different grapes produce different wine flavours, ODonnell says. The ale is like a red wine with bigger flavours that are not as fine as those of a lager, which is like a white wine.

He says the Cricketers Arms Indian Pale Ale uses three varieties of hops including amarillo for citrus flavours, cascade hops from America for bitterness and the Nelson sauvin hop, named after the sauvignon blanc grape for its fruity flavour.

The ale has two specialty malts for a toffee characteristic and is meant to be savoured rather than chug-a-lugged, ODonnell says.

The Cricketers Arms Mid On is brewed with high

technology to retain the full flavour of a lager while reducing the alcohol.

We can produce small batches, so are very flexible moving between products to respond

in sickness or in health, pets are for lifeWYNDHAM

Kerryn Hamer couldnt understand why her dog, Misha, hid under the couch from ies until an allergy test showed she was sensitive to many things, including y droppings.

e Werribee pet owner has spent $10,000 over the past six years on lotions, injections and other medication to ease her spoodles allergic reactions.

But she wouldnt have it any other way because Misha is a member of her family.

Mrs Hamer is part of a new Wyndham movement founded by her daughter, Rebecca Arnold , and friends Kelsey Robinson and Jessi-anna Townsend . Burden or Bestie is designed to promote responsible pet ownership.

e aim is to give the community some examples of responsible ownership and the amazing bene ts they can get from having an animal that is a best friend and doesnt become a burden, Ms Arnold said.

We want to acknowledge responsible animal ownership instead of concentrating on all the negative attention given to irresponsible animal owners. Mrs Hamer says owning a pet was like caring for a child.

Sometimes your child is healthy, sometimes they need extra care, she said.

In return we get lots of love. Misha is such a brilliant dog, shes so much fun and she puts her paws around you for a cuddle.

When you take on a pet, its like a child and depends on you. Make sure you have

enough money for vet bills because you cant just get rid of it, its a member of your family.

Ms Arnold said Burden or Bestie encouraged people to choose the right pet and highlighted the

responsibility that a pet is for life, not just for Christmas.

e group is running a Facebook competition, with prizes for people who post a picture of themselves with their pet and say why they are a responsible owner. Entries close this Sunday . \

smart and safe out on the water at just the touch of a button

    WERRIBEE

Boaters will have a digital guardian angel this summer, with Werribee Coast Guard volunteers launching a smartphone app to monitor trips.

Safe Trx allows boaters to enter their trip details and return times in a system that is monitored 24 hours a day.

You can set o knowing that if you dont return by the time given, our response team will be alerted and initiate appropriate action, Werribee otilla spokeswoman Cheryl LaBlache said.

Since Safe Trx periodically sends your location data back to our servers, our response team will be able to ensure help gets directly to you and quickly.

Werribee Coast Guard has been tending to the safety of Wyndham boaters since the mid-1970s, with a highly trained team of dedicated volunteers attending an average 100 calls for help every year.

Sometimes, the coast guard is called out to preventable incidents.

Ms LaBlache warned boaters to check weather forecasts and wind warnings before

heading out, to always wear life jackets, ensure they have su cient fuel and ensure their vessels are properly maintained.

e waters around the Werribee area are particularly shallow keep a careful watch on your depth sounder as sand bars can shi without warning , she said.

All too o en we deal with situations where boaters accidentally fall into the

water and we urge the wearing of life jackets at all times.

e di erence between bringing you home safely or not can depend on this one piece of safety equipment.Ms LaBlache said boaters had to

be aware that conditions on the sea changed quickly.

e Werribee otilla will hold a boat licence class this Saturday, and other courses throughout the summer. \
