racetrack safety fears behind shift in cup scheduleWERRIBEE

Werribee Racing Club says it is disappointed its premier event has been moved to next month.

ousands of racegoers were expected to ock to the Bulban Road racecourse for this a ernoons Werribee Cup, but Racing Victoria last week rescheduled the event for Sunday, December 15.

Declaring the recently renovated track was not ready to host racing, Racing Victoria shi ed todays program to Ballarat.

As reported by the Weekly, the inside seven metres of the track underwent a major renovation a er a meeting was abandoned on July 17.

e meeting was called o with eight of 10 races completed a er apprentice jockey Boris ornton was thrown into a railing when the horse he was riding, Frenchkook , put his

foot in a hole on the track and broke his leg. Frenchkook was put down, while ornton, 15, was taken to hospital with suspected leg injuries. Another horse, Adoboli , was put down a er being injured in race six.

Racing Victoria chief executive Bernard Saundry said the organisation was taking a conservative approach.

It is important for the industry and the local community that racing return to Werribee with the track in peak condition, and we are not satis ed that it would be at its optimum for next Wednesdays meeting, he said.

We are allowing the inside of the track further time to consolidate, and we remain con dent that it will be of the required standard for racing when the rescheduled Werribee Cup is set to run on Sunday,

December 15. Werribee Racing Club general manager Ross Kendell said while the decision to reschedule the cup for a Sunday was disappointing, he supported Racing Victorias decision.

Were not prepared to take any risks and chances. I would rather have a cup

on a pristine turf thats going to go o without a hitch.

It is a case of over time building peoples con dence.

In 2007, jockeys refused to race at Werribee, raising concerns about

the surface. Racing didnt return to the track until 2010 a er a $5 million upgrade.

is year was meant to be the rst time the Werribee Cup had been held in November since the track reopened, with the most recent cups held in January and December last year.

Mr Kendell said the rescheduled cup would take the place of the clubs Christmas party

day. He said the meeting would include free entry, childrens activities and live music.

Last years December meeting attracted about 4000 people.

Todays 2000-metre benchmark race that was to have been run as the Werribee Cup will retain its $80,000 stake, but will carry a di erent name. e remainder of the race program will be unchanged. \

    tiny operation a big winWILDLIFE

All creatures great and small come to Melbourne Universitys Werribee veterinary hospital, but an injured, endangered growling grass frog posed special problems for surgeons last week.

e frog, less than the size of a human palm, was found with an injured eye near the Maribyrnong River in Footscray and given to a hospital sta member.

Dr Susan Beths (pictured) said with a creature so small it was tricky surgery.

Every eye dropper of blood they lose is important, and its vital to monitor the respiration rate,

Dr Beths said. Frogs absorb everything through their skin so it had to be handled with gloves from the start.

It was identi ed as an endangered species so we went ahead with a very delicate operation.

Dr Beths said surgeon Dr Sasha Herbert used a surgical eye kit with miniature instruments to remove the frogs right eye, which makes it unsuitable for release in the wild.

It has been given to Melbourne Zoo, which has a growling grass frog breeding program. \

familys christmas wish: give us more time with alexWYNDHAM VALE

Andrew and Eva Millers wish this Christmas is to spend at least another 12 months with their youngest daughter, Alexandra.

Five weeks ago, the four-year-old was diagnosed with di use intrinsic pontine glioma , a rare and incurable brain tumour in the middle of the brain stem which a ects only children.

Only about three cases are seen by doctors at the Royal Childrens Hospital each year. Alex is the second child diagnosed in 2013.

Doctors initially told Alexs parents that she would live between three and 12 months. But a er visiting Sydney-based neurosurgeon Dr Charlie Teo , they are hopeful she will live another one to three years.

Mr Miller said Alexs diagnosis had come out of the blue.

Doctors discovered the tumour a er she had an MRI scan to try and work out why her le eye was turning inwards.

Prior to [the diagnosis] we had no idea at all, Mr Miller said.

We were talking to an eye specialist about correcting her eye and they noticed a tumour ... it was devastating.

When my wife found out, she couldnt talk at all.

Since nding out about the tumour, Mr Miller has quit his job in Western Australia to spend as much time as possible with Alex and her siblings Ash, 19, Shana, 18, Brooke, 17, and Tessa, 16.

e Wyndham Vale youngster undergoes radiation therapy at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre from Monday to Friday in a bid to stunt the tumours growth.

Mr Miller said it broke his heart to watch Alex endure the treatment, but he knew it was for the best.

Its draining. She has to fast from midnight so lunch is her rst meal.

She doesnt like the anaesthetic, so she struggles. It breaks your heart to see her looking at you crying but we have got to try everything.

Alexs treatment will continue until mid-December. Once it is nished, the

Millers plan to take Alex to their property in the southern Grampians and allow her to enjoy being a four-year-old.

My goal is to provide her with memories with what time she has le , Mr Miller said.

Alex loves animals, especially horses, so we will go up there and let her run around and chase animals like a four-year-old does.

We hope to go to Australia Zoo to see

Bindi Irwin and go to the snow next year .In summer, we will camp and be

outdoors. Mr Miller said he knew Alex was one of

the strong ones and he hoped the family would have more than 12 months with her.

He said the family was overwhelmed and humbled by the support of the Wyndham community, with local businesses, groups and

Alexs swim school organising fund-raisers to help cover the cost of her medical bills.

A Facebook page has been set up to document Alexs journey and includes information on how to donate money to help with her treatment. \

    millions cut from roads budget

    TRANSPORT

VicRoads funding for roads in Melbournes north-west has been cut by more than $40 million, according to gures released by the state opposition last week.

e gures, based on VicRoads documents, show that statewide $160 million less was allocated in VicRoads 2012-13 funding than in 2011-12. In the metro north-west region, including Wyndham, funding dropped by 27 per cent from $149 million in 2011-12 to $108 million in 2012-13.

e region covers 14 municipalities, including four growth council areas.

In August, Auditor-General John Doyle criticised successive state governments and VicRoads for failing to provide adequate funding for transport and roads in growth areas.

He found that between $975 million and $1.3 billion was needed to duplicate and upgrade Wyndham roads.

In February, the council revealed that 15 arterial roads managed by VicRoads in Wyndham were over-capacity.

Mayor Bob Fairclough called on VicRoads to fund safety upgrades to Dohertys Road in Laverton North and the duplication of Palmers Road.

Councils road and infrastructure spokesman, Cr Glenn Goodfellow, said the recent Municipal Association of Victoria state council meeting called on VicRoads to provide more money for arterial road upgrades in growth areas.

VicRoads declined to comment on the funding cuts, with north-west metropolitan director Patricia Liew saying she was unsure how the gures had been calculated.

e state opposition has set up a website FixOurRoads.com.au to allow residents to nominate dangerous roads that need xing. \

    LAURA LITTLE and TARA MURRAY

and not need to experience the congestion and tra c problems to the Melbourne CBD, where there is an e ective and e cient public transport service, where we can relax and have fun in a safe environment.

    MAYORAL ELECTION

Wyndhams new mayor has vowed to do more to address residents concerns and improve the councils consultation processes.

Cr Bob Fairclough , who was elected mayor last Wednesday night, said while the council had made an e ort to listen to residents in the past, he believed its community engagement could be improved .

We want to listen to concerns of residents and address those concerns, he said.

Cr Fairclough, who defeated Cr Marie Brittan seven votes to four, said he also planned to focus on addressing the municipalitys public transport and tra c problems, improving public safety and enhancing the citys image.

Imagine if we could transform Wyndham into a place where residents can work locally

Our task is to endeavour to implement as many of these items over the next 12 months as possible.

In a surprise move, councillors decided not to elect a deputy mayor. Cr Intaj Khan said this years introduction of councillor portfolios meant the traditional role of a deputy mayor was not as relevant as it was in the past. He said the portfolios would allow councillors to become more involved in the business end of council and ease the burden on the mayor.

Cr Glenn Goodfellow said while he was a traditionalist who would like to see the deputy mayors role retained, he was not against change.

It would be a fool who doesnt embrace change to move forward if it doesnt work we can always U-turn. \

    Wait time request deniedAMBULANCE DELAYS

Localised ambulance response times wont be released to the public, despite growing concerns over delays and shortages in Melbournes outer suburbs.

Opposition health spokesman Wade Noonan said Labors freedom of information request for gures for the rst half of this year had been denied.

Mr Noonan said the release of localised response times was recommended by th e state auditor-general in 2010.

e community should have access to gures to understand response times, as it [helps] to advocate for improvements, he said.

Wyndham paramedics say they are so stretched that they are regularly taking more than 13 minutes to respond to life-threatening code one emergencies.

e most recent localised gures released, for July-December 2012, showed the average waiting time for life-threatening cases in Hoppers Crossing was 13.55 minutes.

In Point Cook, patients waited 13.34 minutes on average, while in Werribee the wait was 13.05 minutes. e state benchmark for code one response times is 15 minutes.

Werribee paramedic Danny Hill said that in 2008-09, Wyndham ambulances were taking 10 minutes on average to respond to code one emergencies. He said the rise in response times was because Wyndham crews were frequently being sent out of the area.

We are o en being sent to Sunbury and Bacchus Marsh or Craigieburn, which a ects

response times.Mr Hill said Wyndham residents

o en relied on ambulance crews from Sunbury, Sunshine and Footscray .

Ambulance Victoria chief executive Greg Sassella said releasing

localised gures was unhelpful as it created an incorrect premise of how the

organisation operated.Group manager Tony Elliott said

the service was increasing resources in Wyndham.

In April this year ... extra peak-period ambulances and paramedics were also added to Caroline Springs, Werribee and Bacchus March, he said. Additional sta and ambulance resources for periods of peak demands will also be added to Melton, Werribee and Sunbury by April next year. \

    your voiceWASTE MOUNTAIN(Weekly, October 16)

There is nothing extraordinary about me. I am a woman on the wrong side of middle age and have teenage children. I work and live in Wyndham, and have been proud of the rebranding of our fabulous city from the smelly poo farm suburb to a prosperous and progressive municipality.

I am a person who has tried to live concerned about the people, animals and environment that surround me, but choose to complain rather than get too involved.

Just recently, I was compelled to take some civil action due to a mountain I saw growing along the highway to Geelong.

At rst, I naively thought it was piling of earth to make a new overpass to connect the freeways of the north-west to the south-west of our state. Then I started hearing and reading some local residents complaining about a waste mountain being built out at the tip site and laughed this off, thinking

this couldnt be true. Then I began to smell it from my home near the recreation centre. Then I took some waste to the tip and saw it rst-hand.

I was so shocked and amazed to think that someone in my council, the councillors I voted for and the council of cers who are there to enact the will of the people, would do such a thing.

    Dont know, wont voteWYNDHAM

A Wyndham councillor has defended his decision to abstain from voting at council meetings four times this year, saying he didnt have enough information to cast informed votes.

Harrison wards Intaj Khan was one of three councillors to exercise the right to abstain in the past year.

Changes to the Local Government Act last year granted councillors the power to refrain from voting at meetings .

Wyndham councillors have refused to cast a vote six times since being elected on October 27, 2012.

Cr Gautam Gupta was the rst councillor to exercise the new right, abstaining from voting last December on the provision of lap lanes and temporary gym facilities for the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre (WLEC) redevelopment .

Cr Khan abstained from voting twice at councils February meeting, avoiding having a say on when the WLEC should be closed and on the awarding of contracts for three council reserves.

He also abstained from voting in August on the issues of the Wests Road land ll and a

council decision to close the temporary gym at WLEC.

Cr Adele Hegedich also failed to cast a vote in August, abstaining on the issue of the re services levy.

Cr Khan said he abstained from voting on issues relating to the WLEC and the land ll because he felt he was not informed enough to

make a decision.I asked for more information [from

council o cers] but didnt get it in time to make a proper decision, he said. I dont want to oppose and vote against something that I dont know enough information about.

We are spending a lot of money on the leisure centre, so I wanted to make

sure I was making an informed decision.Chief executive Kerry ompson said

councillors had abstained from voting a very small number of times, given that council had voted on more than 200 matters in the past year.

However, she said Wyndhams new governing framework made it clear that abstaining from voting was discouraged . \

    giants bite into growersWERRIBEE SOUTH

Wyndhams market gardeners can only dream of fetching $7 a kilogram for broccoli sold in local supermarkets, according to a growers advocate.

Most would get far less than the retail price or even the wholesale price, according to Vegetable Growers Association of Victoria president David Wallace.

It might be a short drive from Werribee South to the local supermarkets, but the price of the produce was vastly di erent, he said.

Mr Wallace said growers supplying Coles and Woolworths supermarkets directly had con dential prices set which may be even lower than other wholesale prices.

He said the industry was awaiting the release of an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission inquiry into the treatment of suppliers by major supermarkets, which ACCC chairman Rod Sims said had been delayed until around March because of its complexities.

A Weekly survey of prices of ve vegetables at Werribee plazas Coles and Woolworths supermarkets found that most were substantially higher than the wholesale prices.

Tony Migro , market reporting o cer for Fresh State which represents vegetable

traders said because of their buying power, supermarkets negotiated cheaper prices than wholesale. He said recent prices for iceberg lettuce at the Melbourne Wholesale Fruit and Vegetable Market in Footscray Road were between $1.25 and $1.50. Celery was $1.25, cabbage $1.50 to $2, broccoli $3 a kilogram and cauli ower $2.50 to $2.70.

ese are the average selling prices in the wholesale market, but obviously big buyers have got purchasing power and get better deals, he said.

Earlier this month, Wesfarmers chief executive Richard Goyder urged the ACCC not to interfere with the supermarket sector.

He told shareholders he was perplexed when Wesfarmers Coles was blamed for challenges in the food sector.

e farming and food industries do have challenges today, as they have had for many years. ey are not helped by our strong currency, as well as productivity issues and cumbersome regulations. But, it is just too easy, too simplistic, to blame the supermarkets for a lot of these di culties.

Mr Goyder said suppliers, shoppers, sta and investors had bene ted from the resuscitation of Coles since Wesfarmers took over in 2007. \

cameron: could it be the name of our new suburb?EAST WERRIBEE

Wyndhams newest suburb should be called Cameron, a er the scientist who established the State Research Farm more than 100 years ago, according to a long-time Werribee resident.

Martin Sharkey , who worked at the State Research Farm for 30 years, has written to Wyndham council and local MPs urging them not to call the new suburb East Werribee.

Planning Minister Matthew Guy last month announced that the new suburb, being built on land that belonged to the State Research Farm, would be known as East Werribee.

e decision has the support of the council, which lobbied for the name to include Werribee. But Premier Denis Napthine has asked Mr Guy to nd a more imaginative name that re ects the areas history. e review is ongoing.

Mr Sharkey said other new suburbs in Wyndham had been given names that re ected their past, so it was tting that the latest suburb be named a er Dr Samuel

Cameron. Point Cook, Williams Landing and Truganina recognise their historical truths about Truganina, the defence contribution to Australia of Point Cook and Williams Landing, he said. Likewise, technology was the basis for the formation of the State Research Farm in 1912 and the

technology precinct in 2013, and the new name should acknowledge this link .

Mr Sharkey said Dr Cameron helped establish the State Research Farm in 1912 with the aim of improving the genetics and disease resistance of crops and livestock,

and he worked at the forefront of research into plant and animal

genetics, chemistry, soil and plant diseases and farm economics.

Cameron understood that progress demanded that trained scientists and technologists were available to solve the problems of the nation. He did his part to make sure that Australian scientists were of world standing. \

Some people dont want others to know they grew up in the western suburbs, Shane Jacobson says. Some say it under their breath or quietly so people dont hear them. But I say it from the hilltops. Its made me who I am.

Dressed casually and sitting by the Maribyrnong River in Avondale Heights, Jacobson is ooded with pleasant memories. Hes as warm and genuine as plumber Kenny, the role he is most known for. Born in Essendon in 1970, Jacobson spent his childhood in Avondale Heights. Although his parents divorced when he was four, Jacobsons blue eyes light up as he says growing up in the 70s in what was the tough western suburbs was full of laughter, mischief, magic and adventure. Endless days were spent swimming, canoeing, shing and cheekily spying on a hermit living on a makeshi ra tied to the shore , surrounded by his old cats and enclosed in a fence made of wire and cans.

He is one of my most vivid childhood memories. To me he was a part of the river and one of the many characters of my childhood. Jacobson says the Maribyrnong River is like another member of our family that continues to weave its way in and out of his life. I spent a lot of my childhood canoeing along the river and always found it fascinating that the river was connected to ocean and if I kept going I could end up anywhere in the world, he says.

Jacobsons father Ron, who was born into a family of carnival performers, grew up in a tent on the banks of the Maribyrnong in Newstead Street. For more than 50 years Ron, who now lives in Maidstone, has owned the Maribyrnong Boxing Gym. Jacobsons mother Jill, who was diagnosed with Parkinsons disease in 2002, still lives in the Avondale Heights family home. Since the 60s she has run the renowned Avonde Calisthenics College.

My father is the funniest man I know, Jacobson says. He has shaped me completely. My mothers strength inspires me every day. My parents have always backed me no matter what and steered me in the right direction. Parents shape you, they carve you out and make you who you are.

It was a family lled with laughter and love that sustained Jacobson and inspired him to perform. My dad and my uncles were without a doubt the rst comedians I met, he says. ey were my real superheroes. I always felt when I saw Superman and Batman, yeah, youre doing well but you just got to hope you dont do the wrong thing to my dad or uncles because theyd be stronger than you.

Jacobsons journey to national stardom is almost as zig-zagging as his acting and singing career. Before he snagged the leading role in Kenny, which he made with his brother Clayton in 2006, he worked as a credit card fraud investigator, a medical supplies sales rep and a pyrotechnician for the likes of AC/DC and Guns N Roses.

It was while working as a festival event manager that Jacobson encountered portaloo suppliers Splashdown Toilets. Coincidentally, Clayton, who directed and co-wrote the lm Kenny with Jacobson, had cleaned toilets to pay his way through lm school. Jacobson says his encounters with the men who cleaned other peoples waste sparked the mockumentary.

e lm attracted a cult following and became a surprise hit, grossing almost $8 million at the Australian box o ce. It was nominated for eight AFI awards, with Jacobson winning the award for best lead actor.

e men doing this job are some of the most genuine, kind-hearted, honest people Ive ever met. e thing about Kenny was that he resonated with a lot of people, he says.

More than seven years later, Jacobson says people yell out Kenny to him more o en than his own name. I think some people still believe hes a real person, he says. But I have always believed its far nicer to be remembered for something you did than forgotten for everything youve tried.

From cleaning portaloos to co-hosting Top Gear Australia and starring in lms including the father-son road trip lm Charlie & Boots in 2009 with Paul Hogan, Surviving Georgia, Newcastle, Cactus and the short lm e Apprentice, Jacobson continues to reinvent himself.

He has also made waves in musicals alongside Geo rey Rush and Rhonda Burchmore in Melbourne eatre Companys e Drowsy Chaperone, and he won a Helpmann Award for best supporting actor in a musical for his performance as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in Guys and Dolls.

great westernShane Jacobson, who gave us Kenny, is in high demand, writes MELISSA CUNNINGHAM

In 2009, Jacobson was thrust into the spotlight again for his most challenging acting role trapped miner Brant Webb in the TV mini-series Beacons eld. It revisited the Beacons eld mine collapse where miners Webb and Todd Russell were trapped nearly a kilometre underground in the rock fall that killed their colleague Larry Knight on Anzac Day in 2006.

e rst time I watched it, I had Brant and his wife Rachel sitting next to me and there I was re-enacting the 14 most terrifying days of his life, he says. Beacons eld must be remembered as a tragedy because a life was lost. I spent a lot of time wondering if I was doing a good enough job. But a er we had watched it, Brant shook my hand and Rachel gave me a kiss and that meant the world to me.

Since then, Jacobson has found his largest audience on the small screen. is year he hosted e Great Australian Bake O and starred as musician and father of two, Luce Tivoli, in the ABCs Sunday night series e Time of Our Lives.

While Jacobson seemingly became an overnight star, his memoir e Long Road to Overnight Success, released this year,

reveals he spent his life preparing for stardom. But his most rewarding role is fatherhood. His three children, a daughter and a son with partner Felicity Hunter and an eight-year-old son from a previous relationship, are my everything, my world. Everything you do is in the hope youll provide them with a better life and in return you get love, and thats a pretty good deal.

He met Hunter six years ago and they have been inseparable since. Felicity is my rock, my witness to everything I do, he says. She is the rst person I come to see, ring or tell; she is my best mate. My life is her life and her life is mine.

Never one to sit still for long, Jacobson has started lming for the series Fat Tony & Co, about the life of underworld gure Tony Mokbel, due out next year. Jacobson has been cast as Jim OBrien, the former o cer in charge of the Purana taskforce.

I want to continue to entertain, he says. I want to continue to be a parent. I want my family and children to be proud of me and my partner to enjoy me as much as I enjoy her. \

Being a fat cat is not what it is cracked up to be, with experts warning that molly-coddled moggies face serious health risks.

With their pets at risk of diabetes and high blood pressure, the owners of some felines are joining online cat weight control sites, but vets urge against sudden dietary changes.

Fat-cat boot camps with sudden changes to strict diets are not always the best for pets, according to Associate Professor Caroline Mans eld, the head of Melbourne Universitys veterinary hospital small animal medicine unit in Werribee.

Dr Mans eld says overweight cats can become diabetic and need daily insulin injections. But a change in diet without veterinarian supervision can cause problems with the liver and other major organs.

She says Max (pictured) weighs about 5.5 kilograms and is overweight according to the cat body condition score, which is similar to the human body mass index score .

Dr Mans eld has seen cats weighing more than 10 kilograms, or more than twice the size of an average domestic cat of about 3.5 to 4.5 kilograms. She says a slowly reduced, veterinarian supervised diet can reverse type 2 diabetes in cats.

Up to half of cats found to have type 2 diabetes can, a er initial insulin injections, return to normal. \

A 15-year-old Altona girl has released a debut CD for a year 9 project at Westbourne Grammar School in Truganina. Asami Weaver (pictured) launched her self-titled CD at a live performance with her sister, Suzuka, in Altona this month. Asami, who has performed with the Australian Opera, began singing publicly at age seven. She says she draws inspiration from things that have happened in my life. Three of the songs are originals; one of them, I Miss You, was written for a friend who lost a close relative this year. Asamis singing teacher, Steven Zammit, helped write several tracks on the CD, which was recorded at Airwaves Studio in Altona Meadows. Asami says she wants to keep practising her music when shes older. \ GD

wyndham central relishes an updated outlookWERRIBEE

e school year is winding up, but a $16 million building program at Wyndham Central Secondary College is gathering momentum, with plans to complete the new school in 2014.

Principal Julie Myers says the 1970s school will be unrecognisable when the redevelopment, including a new showpiece entry, is completed by April next year.

A rundown gym on Shaws Road was demolished during the September school holidays and construction is about to begin on a new administration, sta centre and entry facing Galvin Park.

Ms Myers said this area, along with a new gymnasium and trade training centre, would be completed by the end of April. A theatre and centres for years 7, 8 and 9 and later years would be built by the end of next year.

Formerly known as Galvin Park, the schools name was changed to Wyndham Central this year .

Every part of the school will be either

rebuilt or refurbished, Ms Myers said. Next year we will introduce a new school uniform to coincide with completion of the building program.

e uniforms have a logo incorporating an atom to signify science and a world globe to represent internationalism and global technology, chosen by the students.

Ms Myers said the building program with $14 million in state funding and

$2 million in federal funding for a trade training centre signalled the rebirth of a long-neglected school.

e school once had 1400 students, but numbers declined

because of the deteriorating buildings. Enrolment stands at 700,

but the student population is expected to surge with the new buildings creating a positive community perception of a forward-moving school.

A new arts and science, technology, engineering and mathematics network centre and a refurbished food technology wing were unveiled earlier this year, as were new music and study centres. \

SUE HEWITTPositive perception: Justyce Lewis, Elizabeth Vakaloloma and Thaw Thewah are relishing the improvements being made to Wyndham Central. (WAYNE HAWKINS)

funds injection to boost child healthHEALTH

Immunisation clinics will be opened in Wyndham and Hobsons Bay in an e ort to boost vaccination rates among four-year-olds and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

South Western Melbourne Medicare Local will run the nurse immunisation clinics thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.

Grants were awarded to seven organisations across the country that are striving to boost immunisation rates in their communities.

Latest statistics from the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register show that in June this year, the immunisation rate in Wyndham for children aged 12-15 months was below the state average.

A total of 89 per cent of 12-15- month olds were immunised,

compared to 91 per cent across the state.

South Western Melbourne Medicare Locals acting chief executive, Linda Kensington, said the grant would help promote the

bene ts of childhood vaccinations. e nurse immunisation clinics will more e ectively utilise practice nurse and GP time, allowing more patients to be seen, vaccines to be administered

safely and providing better education and health

promotion initiatives, she said.Ms Kensington said some parents

were reluctant to vaccinate their children, believing immunisations would harm them, while others were busy and forgot immunisation dates.

She said migrant families were o en unfamiliar with the Australian system and had a lack of health literacy, preventing them from properly vaccinating their children. \

e food technologist with Werribees research and development company Dairy Innovation Australia says there are several factors behind a winning product.

With butter it has to look good, with an even-coloured appearance; it must have a clean avour and a smooth texture with no grittiness in the mouth, she says.

Ms Walker was one of the judges of 280 products in the dairy category from milk, cream and butter to dip, yogurt and ice cream assessing avour, aroma, body, texture, colour and appearance. Cheese had a separate judging panel, including celebrity chef Gabriel Gate. \

    HOPPERS CROSSING

Darcy, Ben, Ambrea and Josh are just four of the many Woodville Primary School pupils following in their parents footsteps.

In recent years, the Hoppers Crossing school has welcomed the children of many former pupils into its classrooms. On December 5, those former pupils will have the chance to revisit the school for its 40th birthday celebrations.

Teacher Chris Dodd, who has been at Woodville since 1981, sa ys the open day will enable past pupils to see how the school has changed.

It was the biggest school in the state when I started , she said. We had eight portables and classes had 36 pupils. We have a huge cultural mix now. Until about 2005 we were very Anglo-Saxon, but [now] I think about a quarter of our pupils are English-as-a-second-language students.

Ms Dodd sa ys the school has several teachers who were students, including assistant principal Jodi Binion , who has taught at the school for 13 years. Ms Binion says there have been a lot of changes to Woodville since she was a pupil. But one thing that hasnt changed is the communitys involvement in the school.

e open day will coincide with Woodvilles annual Christmas picnic and carols performance.

School tours will be held hourly from 1.30pm and be followed by an o cial welcome. From 6pm, there will be the chance for former pupils to catch up with other students from their best days. \

Impressively presented from start to finish, this extended house has obvious appeal and will impress anyone searching for a rare south-side gem within

strolling distance of the hustle and bustle of Watton Street. While theres a good amount of space to move inside, the well-kept backyard makes it an easily manageable property for downsizing or starting out.

Perched beyond a picturesque white picket fence and a rosebush-laden front yard, the high-gabled weatherboard has three large bedrooms with chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobes. They share a bathroom with leadlight window and shower over bath.

Two elegant archways in the carpeted hallway link to a large formal lounge room with ornate ceiling and split-system and an adjoining light-filled dining area. The extended part of

the house is a sure highlight, with its polished baltic pine floorboards, split-system in the informal family-meals area, and timber kitchen with its variety of drawers, Simpson dual oven and Chef cooktop.

Timber framed doors slide out to an elevated and covered outdoor deck and a low-maintenance patio with prodigious lemon tree and a brick barbecue. Theres also a side yard with a clothesline and a large storage shed

beyond. A drive-through side driveway is the spot to park vehicles, which can enter via a roller door in the brick garage.

The latter is secure and has lots of storage shelves, a door to the front yard and space to park two cars.

Other features are hardwood floorboards, block-out curtains with lacework and an alarm system. \
