Question 4:What is the character of the artist I am
listening to?
“The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going. A wise man
feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident.” – Proverbs 14:15-16
Nicki Minaj: “Yet for all her flamboyant self-assurance, Minaj
admits that her creative expression is rooted in a desire
for ‘emotional escape,’ stemming from a troubled
childhood.” – USA Today, 11/22/10“Nicki Minaj raises the curtain”

“Miley Cyrus turns 18 today. But Disney’s Hannah Montana star
hasn’t waited for this legal landmark to strut her adult stuff. Her recent video for Who Owns My Heart was enough to make Mickey Mouse blush, a boudoir drama featuring black lingerie
and satin sheets.” – USA Today, 11/23/10“Not a girl, not yet a woman?”
“I look up to Em and I look up to Usher. Eminem, I have
been rapping his verses since I was a little tyke...
Usher has been a role model and mentor since
day one, he has been great.”
-Justin Bieber, 11/22/10CNN Interview @ AMA
“I am who I am because of Michael [Jackson] and I’m
going to miss him.” – Usher
“When you think back to your childhood in Santa Barbara going to church every weekend being raised not allowed to listen to songs that you now sing. If I
would have told you then that you were going to grow up and
be this sexy pin-up pop star, would you have believe me?”
“I think that was always in the back of my mind, that was the
plan.” – Katy Perry
CBS: The Early Show interview with Maggie Rodriguez,
11/29/10
“I don’t think a lot of people would consider me a
Christian. I came from a background where I wasn’t
allowed to ask questions. Now I’m asking questions.”
– Katy Perry“Perry lives a Teenage Dream”
John Mayer: “The man who writes with such insight about loving women...”
– CBS Interview
“She ‘grew up influenced by a lot of different music,’ from the country
tunes her mother crafted to the hip-hop and punk favored by her big
brother, Lagan.” – USA Today, 7/1/10“Singer/Rapper Ke$ha: ‘Really fun,’ yet serious”
“I’ve listened to a lot of rap where men talk a certain way, often about women, and I’m not offended. It’s meant to be funny. I’m throwing it
right back at them, with humor, but some people can’t take it.” – Ke$ha
“Singer/Rapper Ke$ha: ‘Really fun,’ yet serious”
“I have this formula for music. If I continue to write songs about my life, and my life is always changing, then
my music will always be changing. It’s a pretty basic formula, but it answers a lot
of questions that I have.” – Taylor Swift
“Taylor learns to ‘Speak Now’”
“Swift is taking a long-range view, looking to artists like Emmylou Harris and Paul
McCartney as her adult role models.”
– USA Today, 10/22/10“Taylor learns to ‘Speak Now’”
“Jay-Z already has a confessional outlet in songwriting. ‘It’s really like therapy sessions.
That’s why I do it in the studio. I’m not a person who will sit and talk about my
feelings. But the music just pulls it out, and it’s like, ‘Man, I can’t believe I held that in for
12 years!’” – USA Today, 11/16/10“Jay-Z decodes his life story”
As you can clearly see, the character of secular musical artists do not promote or demonstrate
lifestyles that bring glory to God.

“We’re exposing ourselves to a message associated with the enemies of the cross – the cross that purchased our forgiveness and freed
us from the bondage of our sinful desires.”
Bob Kauflin
“For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind
earthly things.
For our conversation [conduct] is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus
Christ.”
- Philippians 3:18-20
“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the
earth.”
- Colossians 3:1-2
“That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
[Repent]
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; [Renew]
And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”

- Ephesians 4:22-24
“Godly music is a powerful contributor to
the whole transformation process. It can bring the entire
context and emotion of your life into a spiritual
environment.”

If you are hooked on the wrong music, it will be very difficult to listen to
anything else, but if you value your spiritual health
and growth more than your secular music
preferences, God will do great and mighty things!
