Signed by the NY Yankees in 1939, Jack was looking forward to trying to make it in the big leagues. But his run at a pro baseball career was cut short by the events of Dec. 7, 1941 when Jack went down to enlist for training as a Naval Aviator. Turned down due to a bout with rheumatic fever when he was younger, Jack enlisted in the Coast Guard instead.

Assigned to one of the sixty 83’ wooden cutters in Rescue Flotilla One, Jack’s role on D-Day was to rescue wounded or drowning soldiers in the water off Omaha Beach. The Flotillarescued over 1400 men that day. Jack will

be our featured speaker at the SHCC Pre-Celebration Party, don’t miss this opportunity to come meet him in person and help us honor his sacrifi ce and service in WWII.

Bradford, PA is home to both Case Knives and Zippo Lighters. Here’s a brief summary of the relationship between these two great American icons:

Case began in 1889 when four brothers - William Russell (W.R.), Jean, John, and Andrew Case (a.k.a. “The Case Brothers”)began fashioning knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York.

W.R.’s son, John Russell (Russ) Case, a former salesman for the Case Brothers brand, launched W.R. Case & Sons around the turn of the 20th century. Russ’s father acted as his son’s consultant, helping to stabilize the company’s early fi nances while building a reputation as a dependable supplier of high-quality cutlery.

In 1993, Zippo Manufacturing Company, maker of the world famous Zippo® windproof lighter and another family-owned business based in Bradford, formed W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company to continue the legacy of the Case family of brands.

The Zippo CarInventor of the Zippo lighter and founder of Zippo Manufacturing Company, George G. Blaisdell, loved automobiles as much as he loved his world-famous windproof lighter. As a young man, Mr. Blaisdell was impressed by a parade of “productmobiles” - incredible vehicles that resembled the products they represented. After the incredible success of Zippo after WWII, he set out to create his own “productmobile” in the image of the iconic Zippo lighter.

On June 16, 1947, Zippo purchased a 1947 Chrysler Saratoga for $2,048. Blaisdell envisioned a car that looked like a Zippo lighter. He hired Gardner Display of Pittsburgh to design the vehicle, a 1947 Chrysler Saratoga with larger-than-life lighters stretching above the roof line, complete with removable neon fl ames. The lids of the lighters snapped shut for travel. The word Zippo was painted on the side in 24-karat gold. The total cost to transform the vehicle into two towering windproof lighters was $25,000. Through the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, the Zippo Car traveled to all 48 contiguous states, participating in special events, trade expos, fairs and leading parades. Unfortunately, due to the weight of the modifi ed chassis, the Zippo Car experienced frequent tire blow outs. The car was sent in to a dealership in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for repairs, but due to the projected cost of resolving theissues, the project was put on hold indefi nitely. The car remained at the dealership, awaiting its fate.

In the early 1970s, Mr. Blaisdell went back to Pittsburgh to retrieve the car, only to fi nd that the dealership had gone out ofbusiness, leaving no trace of the Zippo Car. To this day, the fate of the original Zippo Car remains a mystery.

In 1996, Zippo purchased a grey 1947 Chrysler New Yorker and began restoration of another Zippo Car to mirror the original with additional features. Eighteen months later, the task was completed with a price tag around $250,000. By 1998, the Zippo Car was back in action once again traveling the country. The Zippo Car now participates in parades, corporate sponsored events, tradeshows, and much more.

The Zippo Car continues to drive home the classic message of style, quality, and dependability while traveling the United States coast to coast. When not on the road, the Zippo Car can be found at the Zippo/Case Museum in Bradford, Pennsylvania.

FUN FACTS: ◘ The “new” Zippo Car was delivered on May 10, 1998 and debuted at the Zippo/Case International Swap Meet on July 16.◘ The car had approximately 180,000 miles under its hood when purchased in 1996.◘ There have been 11 Zippo Car drivers.◘ The Zippo Car has visited numerous famous landmarksincluding: Mount Rushmore, St. Louis Arch, The Alamo,The Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Las Vegas Strip, Niagara Falls, the Hollywood Sign, and Bourbon Street in New Orleans.

Bose - Reid Tour Eddyville KYIt was a full house and then some at the Bose-Reid Tour in Eddyville this year with Tony Bose, and Ida Reid as our special guests. We sure appreciate everyonecoming out and sharing a good time amongst friends and fellow Case collectors.

We all had a good time, but ----we’re pretty sure NO ONE had a BETTER time than Kelly Holcomb. He was drawn out as the GRAND PRIZE WINNER of the One-of-a-Kind Case Knife made by Mike DuBois in the Case Model Shop.

The fi le work on this knife was just incredible as well as the design.

Congratulations, Kelly! Sure hope you are enjoying this beautiful piece of American craftsmanship!

Who Says Lightning Never Strikes Twice?

Leo Courshon WINS in Branson AGAIN!It was a blistering 106 degrees in thesummer of 2012 when Leo Courshon came out for the CasePresident’s Tour in Branson, MO. No sign of lightning anywhere. Greg Booth, then CEO & President of W.R. Case & Sons was our honored guest along with Austin Meier, PBR

Bull Rider, and J.R. “Hillbilly” Lanham of Bloodline Outdoors TV. The Grand Prize that day was a One-Of-A-Kind Pearl Case Executive Tour Folding Hunter, shown below. When the lucky name was called, Leo was caught totally off guard--even though he did have his lucky silver dollar in his pocket. Leo even commented, “I never win anything!”

Fast forward to Branson in 2019 at the Case “Keep Your Hands Sharp” Tour. This time our honored guest was John Sullivan, Director of Special Promotions for W.R. Case & Sons and the Grand Prize was aOne-Of-A-Kind Pearl/Abalone Saddlehorn with worked bolsters, liners, and backsprings all done by CaseArtisan Mike DuBois in the Case Model Shop.Absolutely gorgeous. There was no sign of lightning at the event this year either, but “lightning” did strike twice...right where Leo was standing AGAIN! He didn’t

even think about saying “I never win anything” this time but in case you’re wondering...yes, he did have his lucky silver dollar in hand when the winner was announced!Congratulations, Leo! We hope you enjoy both of your very special Case knives!
