To shed light on the history of WSSU 104.1FM, WHCJ 90.3FM must be mentioned. WHCJ 90.3FM was licensed in 1975 during Dr. Prince A. Jackson’s, 7th president of Savannah State University, tenure. It originally began as a 10 watt station covering a small radius that only extended campus wide. Now, WHCJ is a 1600 watt station covering the areas of Chatham County and portions of Effingham, Bryan, Beaufort and Liberty Counties. In addition to educating and entertaining its various audiences, WHCJ provides a practical laboratory where students may receive hands on experience in various aspects of broadcast production. The current station director is Theron ‘Ike’ Carter and the assistant station director is Grace ‘Lady Grace’ Curry. About four years ago, Carter and Curry began establishing the new low power station that is now WSSU 104.1FM. Carter wanted a low power radio station where student could share the same experience of WHCJ but through a student governed station. Carter originally wanted a 10 watt station, just as how WHCJ started however, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has recently placed a hold on 10 watt stations. Subsequently, this left Carter with the decision to either go through with the tedious task of establishing an unnecessarily larger station, or to look into investing in a low power station. The obvious choice was the low power radio station. In 2008 Carter applied for a Title III Grant which is a grant that helps eligible institutes of higher education to become self-sufficient and expand their capacity by providing funds to improve and strengthen the academic quality, institutional management and fiscal stability of eligible institutions. Funds may be used for projects including: administrative management, the development and improvement of academic programs, construction and maintenance and student service programs designed to improve academic success. Construction of the new station began in 2009. By Oct. 2010 WSSU was finally operation ready. In the spring of 2011, Carter and Curry decided to approach former volunteer programmers, Courtney Banks and Kimberly Vining, with the exclusive opportunity to be station directors of WSSU. The duo ecstatically accepted the offer and began the search for dedicated workers who were eager learn. Upon their return to school in the fall of 2011, Banks and Vining were fully equipped with proposals, training layouts, program line up, and ideas of campus interaction. After an intense and extensive training and audition process, Banks and Vining assembled WSSU’s first staff. WSSU launched on the air Sep. 19, 2011. From that day, WSSU has maintained a student governed radio station where the students produce radio programs, manage day-to-day operations of the station, and maintain on-air continuity with the campus of Savannah State University.

WSSU 104.1FM is the new student governed radio station of Savannah State

University. WSSU 104.1FM is on the airwaves Monday through Friday from 12

p.m. to 5 p.m. WSSU airs a variety of musical and talk shows covering topics

such as relationships, sports, current events, campus events, etc. WSSU is a non-

commercial, low power radio station, meaning that it is not funded by purchases

of advertisements and rarely ever airs anything other than PSAs and its own

programming. As intended, its power is less than 10 watts reaching only a small

number of listeners.

WSSU serves as a practical laboratory where students may receive hands on

experience in various aspects of radio broadcast production. The experience of

working at WSSU, along with a traditional classroom education, makes our

students better prepared to enter the job market.

SSU LAUNCHES NEW RADIO STATION

WSSU 104.1FM is SSU’s new low-power radio station, now airing Monday though Friday 12 p.m. to

5 p.m.

Premiering shows consist of a variety of music and talk shows with themes such as spoken

word, sports, celebrity gossip and relationships.

Station directors Courtney Banks and Kimberly Vining, both senior mass communications

majors, were promoted from WHCJ volunteer disc jockeys to the directors of WSSU in the spring of

2011. Their aim for the new station is to regain the attention of the student body and to provide an

outlet for easy access to on and off campus entertainment.

WSSU is the daughter station of the well known WHCJ 90.3FM. About 4 years ago director and

assistant director of WHCJ Theron ‘Ike’ Carter and Grace ‘Lady Grace’ Curry, began establishing the

new low power station. Carter wanted a low power station where students could have hands on experience

in broadcast radio through a student governed station. Construction of the new station began in 2009 and

by Oct. 2010 WSSU was operation ready. Its launch date was Sep. 19, 2011.

This is exciting news for your readers because the student body has been eaiting on a change in campus radio.

Savannah State University. We are opening our doors for local media outlets to take

a tour of our facilities and to offer the exclusive opportunity to sit in on a recording of

one of our most popular shows, Attraction of Opposites, our highly ranked relationship

show. Later we will be hosting a mixer for the student body to get to know the staff and

to ask questions about the station and bid input.

Tryese Gibson and Taraji P. Henson, also known as the dysfunctional couple “Jodie and Yvette”

from the classic movie Baby Boy (2001), are scheduled to visit Savannah State University’s radio station

on Jan. 24, 2012.

Gibson and Henson are highly anticipated guests of the hit relationship show of WSSU104.1FM,

Attraction of Opposites. Host Kimberly ‘K. Kouture’ Vining and co-host D’Ante ‘Diesel D’ Ransberg,

both mass communications seniors at Savannah State University, love to have guests on their show and

both agreed that in its irony, inviting Gibson and Henson would be a good look for the station and

provide a unique dialogue. Vining said, “We love to have guests because it always provides more

substance to our topics and provides another point of view other than our own.” Vining jokingly

says, “And who better to seek relationship advice from other than the couple that everyone secretly

admires.”
