After dispatching the Osprey’s 2-1 Friday night, San Francisco took a big victory from the Gauchos Sunday, 4-1. Friday night, Christina Moberg and Ashley O’Brien each scored goals off set pieces for the Green and Gold. In the big win Sunday, Lauren Maris, Hanna Haanes, Molly Hall and O’Brien netted goals for the Dons. O’Brien led USF on the weekend with two goals and an assist. SAN FRANCISCO, AND WCC, FARE WELL OUT WEST: After a convincing 4-1 victory over defending Big West Champion UC Santa Barbara Sunday, the USF women’s soccer team has earned a spot West Region top-10, as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Mon- day. The Dons are currently ranked seventh in the West, boasting an unblemished 3-0-0 record. The regional rank marks the first time since 2004 that USF has earned the recognition. This week, all eight West Coast Conference schools appear in the rank. Portland tops the rankings with San Diego, and Santa Clara rounding out the top three. Pepperdine is listed fifth, followed by Loyola Marymount and USF. Saint Mary’s is ranked eighth and Gonzaga rounds outWCC schools tied for tenth. ASHLEY O’BRIEN EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION: Ashley O’Brien has been named a national Primetime Performer of the Week, as announced by CollegeSoccer360.com. O’Brien played an in- tegral role in the Dons’ two victories last week, scoring two goals and an assist. With nine seconds remaining in the opening half against North Florida, the senior defender scored an unassisted goal off of a free kick. Sunday, in a big 4-1 victory over defending Big West Champion UC Santa Barbara, O’Brien capped scoring with a goal late in the match. After being passed the ball from Molly Hall, The senior fired a shot from 10 yards out into the left side of the net. O’Brien also registered her assist Sunday, assisting on Hanna Haanes’ game-winning goal in the first half. UNBLEMISHED TO START THE SEASON: San Francisco’s 3-0-0 unblemished record marks the first time since 1996 that the Dons have gone undefeated against a trio of Division I foes to open the season. Last year, USF opened with a 3-0-0 mark, facing one Division I opponent. GOALS A PLENTY: Sunday’s four goals against Santa Barbara marked the first time since a 4-0 victory over Cal State Northridge in 2006 that the Dons have scored four or more tallies against a Division I opponent. To date, USF has scored eight goals through the opening three matches of the season. The feat ties the school record for goals against Division I opponents in the opening three games of the season. USF also accomplished the feat in 2003 and 1995. Last season, San Francisco scored eight goals in the first three matches, but four of the goals came against a lower tier opponent. The Dons’ eight goals this season currently leads the West Coast Conference. LANDMARK TO START THE SEASON: The season opening win against San Jose State marked the 175th victory in USF women’s soccer history. In 25 years on the Hilltop, The Dons have amassed a 177-266-33 record. Under the guidance of current head coach Mark Carr, San Francisco is 17-33-10. HAANES, MOBERG MAKE IMMEDIATE IMPACT: USF’s Hanna Haanes and Christina Moberg have made an immediate impact since arriving on the Hilltop. The freshman duo accounts for half of the Dons’ goals scored, half of the Dons’ total points, a third of the assists, a third of the shots on goal and two of three game-winning goals. Moberg current leads the team with six points - two goals and two assists. SAN FRANCISCO 2010 WOMEN’S SOCCER USF v. Rice Match 5 • Sun., Sept. 5 • 1:00 p.m. Cal Bears Tournament Berkeley, Calif.
