s Introduction Many hard rock mines have little or no gas detection systems installed in their underground workings. Some existing systems have been installed over older hardwired PLC (programmable logic controller) networks. This presentation will describe the many ways of quickly and easily installing air quality monitoring (AQM) stations in underground mines.

Law
s Introduction Installation options include fixed monitors with local display; fixed or portable monitors with wired or wireless data feeds to existing fiber networks; leaky feeder networks; WiFi networks; and wireless battery-powered mesh networks, which all display on surface using new or existing software. AQM can include any or all of the following: single or multi-gas, airflow, wet bulb temperate, diesel particulate discrimination, fan control, and more. Some of the reason other then the obvious Safety Aspects of monitoring the air quality in an underground mine is the possible energy savings, defining where the ventilation requirements truly are in the mine and confirming when it is actually safe to send the workers back in after a blast.

New Law 2. (a) provide a partial pressure of oxygen of more than eighteen kilopascals; and Note: On January 1, 2016, clause 253 (1) (a) of the Regulation is amended by striking out “a partial pressure of oxygen of more than eighteen kilopascals” and substituting “an oxygen content in the atmosphere of at least 19.5 per cent by volume”. (See: O. Reg. 265/15, s. 15 (1))

Existing Laws (d) workers shall be protected from fumes, vapours or gases by, (i) ventilation, or (ii) the wearing of respirators. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 854, s. 36 (4). 261. In an underground mine a battery-charging station shall be ventilated to prevent the accumulation of an explosive mixture of gases. R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 854, s. 261.

Fiber Optics A common misconception is the belief that you need fiber installed to bring to and from underground. The truth is if it available and already installed use it, if it is not there are numerous options available to transfer data.
