Writing a Chunk Paragraph
Quote Integration
Verb Phrase Definition: The process of properly
fitting quotations from a source into the body of your essay.
Not: A quote bomb!
In Text Citation
Definition: citation information located within an essay body paragraph noting the source of a quote or paraphrase. i.e.(#) or (Author #)
Example Sentences: According to Harvey “Plagiarism can have catastrophic consequences…”(1). OR Plagiarism can come back to haunt you later in life (Harvey 1).
Special Notes: The period follows the last parenthesis not the end of the
sentence. There is no comma between the name and the page
number. Paraphrases also need an in text citation.
Ellipsis
Noun Definition: Mark indicating omitted
text. Examples:
Omitted at the beginning: “…present this voucher at the time of purchase.”
Omitted in the middle: “Simply present…at the time of purchase.”
Omitted at the end: “Simply present this voucher…” …
Claim
Noun Definition: A strong statement that
something is true. Holds an opinion; may not be all fact. 1st sentence in a chunk paragraph
Body Paragraph: How
Claim: A clearly stated opinion which will be proven
through your direct quotation and analysis. Can be viewed as a thesis for your paragraph;
what points will you be making/arguing? Also known as a topic sentence A link to a thesis
It is not a fact!!
Thesis/Claim
Take the prompt and turn it into a statement with the answer. The answer will then lead you to your examples
Signal Phrase
Definition: a partial sentence that introduces a quote or paraphrase. Examples:
As can be seen when character says “_______”(Smith 9). or
Davis found that “_________”(65).
Find Evidence
Look for examples in the text that prove the answer you put into your thesis. Find at least 2 Be sure to note the words exactly! Be sure to include an in text citation
properly formatted. “quote quote quote”(5).
Analytical Sentence
Definition: the process of studying, or examining something to draw a conclusion or solve a problem. It explains why your claim is true.
Not: A FACT!
Analyze
Explain how your thesis is true by showing how the example from the text proves it. Example Sentence Starters
This shows that… (what did hope/faith mean to the characters or plot?)
From this we can see that…(how hope/faith affected the characters, or reader.)
Hope/faith in this moment was…(what was it to the characters, or plot?)
Analyze
Explain how your thesis is true by showing how the example from the text is important to the theme/thesis. Sample Sentence Starters:
This moment was important because… This was significant because… The significance of this to the story is…
**Something can be significant to the story because of how it affects the characters, real life or the plot.
