SharePoint 2010 enabled deployment of a stable BI platform in a successful bank

Findomestic bank is the only bank in Serbia which, since establishing on this market, has been recognized as the bank that offers favorable loans to the retail customers obtained in a simple and quick procedure. Thanks to this, a sudden increase in business has been accomplished, which the existing IT infrastructure has been unable to accompany adequately and effectively enough. After consolidating more than 10 different data bases into a single central data warehouse based on Microsoft SQL Server, the bank started the deployment of a modern Business Intelligence solution that meets all the reporting requirements for the bank’s management. For the creation of that solution they used the new opportunities brought by SharePoint 2010. Now, Findomestic Bank has a system which displays all the key business reports from all segments of the bank in a simple and quick way and which is used equally both by the staff and the top management.

Business Challenge

Fast business growth and increase in the number of clients presented a serious challenge for the IT sector within the Findomestic Bank. “The number of Bank clients was constantly growing; the amount of data simply exploded and the reports became more complex. The answer to the clients had to be almost instantaneous, which was a huge load for our IT infrastructure. Above all, the management required more complex reports and analyses“, explains the situation Duško Marković, Executive Manager of Findomestic Bank. Business data were stored in many databases based on different technologies that were not connected. “There was always an active question - which information is correct at that moment? Confidence in the existing reports and analyses was relatively low, and decision making was difficult. That is why the IT sector was looking for the solution that could respond to all the challenges and all the requirements of modern banking. Our goal was to obtain a system with the accurate data that are easily accessible to all“, says Duško Marković.

Solution

Prior to the creation of BI solution based on Microsoft platform, it was necessary to consolidate existing data warehouses. For that, Findomestic Bank used the existing IT infrastructure based on Microsoft Windows Server operating system which runs Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 in which all the business data from all 16 previously used systems were consolidated. Only after that, the creation of a Business Intelligence solution was possible, as a central place for all data, reports and analysis enabling access to all business data and creation of the reporting process that does not interfere with the rest of the business.

“The solution to the requirements that Findomestic Bank have set before us was found in Microsoft platform, particularly in data connectors brought by SharePoint 2010 and also the features of the Windows Server platform and SQL Server 2008 R2, which form the central data warehouse“, says Goran Ličanin, Director of Strategy and Development in the IT Excellence company, Microsoft Gold Certified partner responsible for the complete consolidation of existing IT infrastructure and the creation of BI solution for the Findomestic Bank.

As a great advantage he distinguishes simplicity and recognisability of Microsoft Office user interface, which, in order to obtain data and reports, is used by everyone, from the managers to retail staff. Thanks to that, the need for additional training of employees is reduced to minimum, and thus the additional expenses and decrease in productivity is avoided. ”However, the key advantage is in the fact that the information is now available to the key people in our bank “, added Marković.

“The ultimate goal of any bank executive is, when he comes to work every morning and after reading a couple of selected reports, to be able to say: Yes, this is it, we are working well; or: There is a problem, to find out where it appeared and how we can overcome it. This can be achieved only with a good Business Intelligence system – any other approach is difficult, slow and unreliable“, says Duško Marković, Executive Director of Findomestic Bank, and adds: “With new BI solution we gained completely new view on our business data, and thus completely the new insight into the business. Above all, we got business data that is accurate and trustworthy.“

Thanks to the results achieved by the BI solution based on Microsoft platform, the plans for further improvement of IT infrastructure of the Bank include introduction of the mechanisms for data mining. The ultimate goal is for the complete business process of the bank to be viewed in just one window, which is the basic idea of every Business Intelligence system.
